Galatians 2

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 It was not until fourteen years had gone by that I travel ed up to Jerusalem again, with Barnabas, and Itook Titus with me too.	1 Quindi, dopo quattordici anni, salii di nuovo a Gerusalemme con Barnaba, dopo aver preso con me anche Tito.
2 My journey was inspired by a revelation and there, in a private session with the recognised leaders, Iexpounded the whole gospel that I preach to the gentiles, to make quite sure that the efforts I was making andhad already made should not be fruitless.	2 Vi salii in seguito a una rivelazione, ed esposi in privato ai notabili il vangelo che proclamo ai pagani, per evitare il rischio di correre o di aver corso invano.
3 Even then, and although Titus, a Greek, was with me, there was no demand that he should becircumcised;	3 Ma neppure Tito che era con me, pur essendo greco, fu obbligato a farsi circoncidere.
4 but because of some false brothers who had secretly insinuated themselves to spy on the freedom thatwe have in Christ Jesus, intending to reduce us to slavery-	4 Ma a causa dei falsi fratelli intrusi, i quali si intrufolarono per spiare la nostra libertà che abbiamo in Gesù Cristo allo scopo di renderci schiavi...
5 people we did not defer to for one moment, or the truth of the gospel preached to you might have beencompromised. . .	5 Ad essi non cedemmo neppure momentaneamente sottomettendoci, affinché la verità del vangelo rimanga salda in mezzo a voi.
6 but those who were recognised as important people -- whether they actual y were important or not:There is no favouritism with God -those recognised leaders, I am saying, had nothing to add to my message.	6 Da parte di coloro che sembravano essere qualcosa -- quali fossero un tempo non ha per me nessun interesse: Dio infatti non guarda alla persona dell'uomo -- ...a me infatti i notabili niente aggiunsero,
7 On the contrary, once they saw that the gospel for the uncircumcised had been entrusted to me, just asto Peter the gospel for the circumcised	7 ma anzi, al contrario, vedendo che a me è stato affidato il vangelo dei non Giudei come a Pietro quello dei Giudei --
8 (for he who empowered Peter's apostolate to the circumcision also empowered mine to the gentiles),	8 colui, infatti, che assisté con la sua forza Pietro nell'apostolato tra i circoncisi assisté anche me tra i pagani --
9 and when they acknowledged the grace that had been given to me, then James and Cephas and John,who were the ones recognised as pil ars, offered their right hands to Barnabas and to me as a sign ofpartnership: we were to go to the gentiles and they to the circumcised.	9 e conosciuta la grazia data a me, Giacomo e Cefa e Giovanni, che erano stimati le colonne, diedero la destra a me e a Bàrnaba in segno di unione: noi dovevamo annunciare il vangelo presso i pagani, essi invece presso i circoncisi.
10 They asked nothing more than that we should remember to help the poor, as indeed I was anxious todo in any case.	10 Solo avremmo dovuto ricordarci dei poveri, ed è ciò che mi diedi premura di fare.
11 However, when Cephas came to Antioch, then I did oppose him to his face since he was manifestly inthe wrong.	11 Quando però venne Cefa ad Antiochia, mi opposi a lui affrontandolo direttamente a viso aperto, perché si era messo dalla parte del torto.
12 Before certain people from James came, he used to eat with gentiles; but as soon as these came, hebacked out and kept apart from them, out of fear of the circumcised.	12 Infatti prima che sopraggiungessero alcuni da parte di Giacomo, egli prendeva i pasti insieme ai convertiti dal paganesimo; ma quando venne quello, cercava di tirarsi indietro e di appartarsi, timoroso dei Giudei convertiti.
13 And the rest of the Jews put on the same act as he did, so that even Barnabas was carried away bytheir insincerity.	13 Presero il suo atteggiamento falso anche gli altri Giudei, cosicché perfino Bàrnaba si lasciò indurre alla loro simulazione.
14 When I saw, though, that their behaviour was not true to the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of al ofthem, 'Since you, though you are a Jew, live like the gentiles and not like the Jews, how can you compel thegentiles to live like the Jews?'	14 Or quando mi accorsi che non camminavano rettamente secondo la verità del vangelo, dissi a Cefa davanti a tutti: Se tu, essendo giudeo, vivi da pagano e non da giudeo, come puoi costringere i gentili a vivere secondo la legge mosaica?
15 We who were born Jews and not gentile sinners	15 Noi, Giudei di nascita e non peccatori di origine pagana,
16 have nevertheless learnt that someone is reckoned as upright not by practising the Law but by faith inJesus Christ; and we too came to believe in Christ Jesus so as to be reckoned as upright by faith in Christ andnot by practising the Law: since no human being can be found upright by keeping the Law.	16 sapendo che non è giustificato alcun uomo per le opere della legge, ma solo in forza della fede in Gesù Cristo, credemmo anche noi in Gesù Cristo, appunto per essere giustificati per la fede di Cristo e non per le opere della legge, poiché per le opere della legge non sarà giustificato nessun mortale.
17 Now if we too are found to be sinners on the grounds that we seek our justification in Christ, it wouldsurely fol ow that Christ was at the service of sin. Out of the question!	17 Se poi, cercando di essere giustificati in Cristo, ci troviamo ad essere peccatori anche noi, Cristo è allora fautore di peccato? Non sia mai detto!
18 If I now rebuild everything I once demolished, I prove that I was wrong before.	18 Se infatti io costruisco di nuovo ciò che distrussi, mi dimostro colpevole di trasgressione.
19 In fact, through the Law I am dead to the Law so that I can be alive to God. I have been crucified withChrist	19 Io, infatti, attraverso la legge morii alla legge per vivere a Dio. Sono stato crocifisso insieme a Cristo;
20 and yet I am alive; yet it is no longer I, but Christ living in me. The life that I am now living, subject tothe limitation of human nature, I am living in faith, faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.	20 vivo, però non più io, ma vive in me Cristo. La vita che ora io vivo nella carne, la vivo nella fede, quella nel Figlio di Dio che mi amò e diede se stesso per me.
21 I am not setting aside God's grace as of no value; it is merely that if saving justice comes through the Law, Christ died needlessly.	21 Non rendo vana la grazia di Dio; se infatti la giustizia proviene dalla legge, allora Cristo è morto per nulla.
