1 Corinthians 14

1 Make love your aim; but be eager, too, for spiritual gifts, and especial y for prophesying.	1 Cercate sopratutto la carità; ambite anche i doni spirituali, specialmente quello di profezia.
2 Those who speak in a tongue speak to God, but not to other people, because nobody understandsthem; they are speaking in the Spirit and the meaning is hidden.	2 Infatti chi parla una lingua, non parla agli uomini, ma a Dio, perchè nessuno lo capisce, esprimendo in spirito delle cose misteriose.
3 On the other hand, someone who prophesies speaks to other people, building them up and givingthem encouragement and reassurance.	3 Chi profetizza invece parla agli uomini e li edifica e li esorta e li consola.
4 Those who speak in a tongue may build themselves up, but those who prophesy build up thecommunity.	4 Chi parla le lingue edifica se stesso, ma chi profetizza edifica la Chiesa di Dio.
5 While I should like you all to speak in tongues, I would much rather you could prophesy; since thosewho prophesy are of greater importance than those who speak in tongues, unless they can interpret what theysay so that the church is built up by it.	5 Vorrei che tutti parlaste le lingue; ma più ancora che profetaste; perchè chi profetizza è da più di chi parla le lingue, a meno che quest'ultimo non le interpreti, affinchè la Chiesa ne riceva edificazione.
6 Now suppose, brothers, I come to you and speak in tongues, what good shal I do you if my speakingprovides no revelation or knowledge or prophecy or instruction?	6 Difatti, o fratelli, se io venissi a voi parlando le lingue senza recarvi qualche rivelazione, o qualche conoscenza, o qualche profezia, o qualche insegnamento, in che vi sarei utile?
7 It is the same with an inanimate musical instrument. If it does not make any distinction between notes,how can one recognise what is being played on flute or lyre?	7 Se gli oggetti inanimati che dànno un suono, quali il flauto e la cetra, non dànno dei suoni distinti, come si potrà sapere quel che è sonato sul flauto o sulla cetra?
8 If the trumpet sounds a cal which is unrecognisable, who is going to get ready for the attack?	8 E se la tromba darà un suono incerto, chi si metterà in ordine di battaglia?
9 It is the same with you: if you do not use your tongue to produce speech that can be readilyunderstood, how can anyone know what you are saying? You will be talking to the air.	9 Così anche voi se colle lingue non pronunziate delle parole chiare, come si potrà intendere quello che vien detto? Parlerete all'aria.
10 However many the languages used in the world, al of them use sound;	10 Per quanto nel mondo siano numerosi i linguaggi, non ce n'è uno che non dica nulla.
11 but if I do not understand the meaning of the sound, I am a barbarian to the person who is speaking,and the speaker is a barbarian to me.	11 Se io non saprò il significato delle parole, sarò un barbaro per colui a cui parlo, e chi parla sarà un barbaro per me.
12 So with you, as you are eager to have spiritual powers, aim to be rich in those which build up thecommunity.	12 Così anche voi, amanti come siete dei doni spirituali, cercate di averne in abbondanza per edificazione della Chiesa;
13 That is why anybody who speaks in a tongue must pray that he may be given the interpretation.	13 chi dunque parla le lingue, chieda la grazia di poterle interpretare;
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit may be praying but my mind derives no fruit from it.	14 se infatti io prego in altra lingua, il mio spirito prega, ma la mia mente rimane sterile.
15 What then? I shal pray with the spirit, but I shall pray with the mind as wel : I shall sing praises withthe spirit and I shal sing praises with the mind as well.	15 Che devo dunque fare? Pregherò collo spirito e colla mente, salmeggerò collo spirito e colla mente.
16 Otherwise, if you say your blessing only with the spirit, how is the uninitiated person going to answer'Amen' to your thanksgiving, without understanding what you are saying?	16 Altrimenti se tu benedirai collo spirito, colui che sta al posto dell'idiota come potrà rispondere « Amen » al tuo rendimento di grazie, se non sa quello che dici?
17 You may be making your thanksgiving wel , but the other person is not built up at al .	17 Senza dubbio il tuo rendimento di grazie sarà bello, ma nessun altro resta edificato.
18 I thank God that I speak with tongues more than any of you;	18 Ringrazio il mio Dio di parlare tutte le vostre lingue;
19 al the same, when I am in the assembly I would rather say five words with my mind, to instructothers as wel , than ten thousand words in a tongue.	19 ma nella Chiesa bramo piuttosto dire cinque parole intelligibili da poter istruire anche gli altri, che diecimila parole in lingua ignota.
20 Brothers, do not remain children in your thinking; infants in wickedness-agreed, but in your thinkinggrown-ups.	20 Fratelli, non siate fanciulli nell'intelligenza; ma siate pargoletti nella malizia e uomini fatti nel senno.
21 It says in the written Law: In strange tongues and in a foreign language I wil talk to this nation, andeven so they will refuse to listen, says the Lord.	21 Sta scritto nella legge: Per gente d'altra lingua e per labbra straniere, io parlerò a questo popolo, e neppur così m'ascolteranno, dice il Signore.
22 So then, strange languages are significant not for believers, but for unbelievers; whereas on theother hand, prophesying is not for unbelievers, but for believers.	22 Le lingue pertanto non per i fedeli sono un segno, ma per gl'infedeli; mentre le profezie sono un segno, non per gl'infedeli, ma per i fedeli.
23 Suppose that, if the whole congregation were meeting and al of them speaking in tongues, andsome uninitiated people or unbelievers were to come in, don't you think they would say that you were all raving?	23 Or se, quando tutta la Chiesa è adunata, tutti parlassero le lingue, dato che entrino degl'idioti o degl'infedeli, non diranno forse che siete ammattiti?
24 But if you were al prophesying when an unbeliever or someone uninitiated came in, he would findhimself put to the test by al and judged by al	24 Se invece tutti profetano, un infedele o un idiota che entri è convinto da tutti, è giudicato da tutti:
25 and the secrets of his heart revealed; and so he would fal down on his face and worship God,declaring that God is indeed among you.	25 i segreti del suo cuore sono svelati, e così egli cadendo bocconi per terra, adorerà Dio, proclamando che Dio è veramente in mezzo a voi.
26 Then what should it be like, brothers? When you come together each of you brings a psalm or someinstruction or a revelation, or speaks in a tongue or gives an interpretation. Let al these things be done in a waythat wil build up the community.	26 Che far dunque, o miei fratelli? Quando vi radunate e ognuno di voi è pronto, o con un salmo, o con un'istruzione, o con una rivelazione, o colle lingue, o coll'interpretazione: facciasi ogni cosa per l'edificazione.
27 If there are to be any people speaking in a tongue, then let there be only two, or at the most three,and those one at a time, and let one of these interpret.	27 Se v'ha di coloro che parlano le lingue, parlino due, o al più tre, e uno per volta, e ci sia chi interpreti;
28 If there is no interpreter, then let each of them be quiet in the assembly, and speak only to himselfand God.	28 e se non c'è chi interpreti, tacciano in chiesa, e parlino con se stessi e con Dio.
29 Let two prophets, or three, speak while the rest weigh their words;	29 Quanto ai profeti, sian due o tre a parlare, gli altri ne dian giudizio;
30 and if a revelation comes to someone else who is sitting by, the speaker should stop speaking.	30 e se un altro che è seduto ha una rivelazione, il primo taccia.
31 You can al prophesy, but one at a time, then al wil learn something and al receive encouragement.	31 Potete però, ad uno ad uno, profetare tutti, affinchè tutti imparino e tutti sian consolati:
32 The prophetic spirit is to be under the prophets' control,	32 gli spiriti dei profeti sono sottoposti ai profeti,
33 for God is a God not of disorder but of peace. As in al the churches of God's holy people,	33 perchè Dio non è il Dio della confusione, ma della pace, come insegno in tutte le Chiese dei santi.
34 women are to remain quiet in the assemblies, since they have no permission to speak: theirs is asubordinate part, as the Law itself says.	34 Le donne nelle chiese stiano in silenzio, perchè non è loro permesso di parlare, ma devono stare soggette, come dice anche la legge.
35 If there is anything they want to know, they should ask their husbands at home: it is shameful for awoman to speak in the assembly.	35 Che se bramano essere istruite su qualche punto, in casa ne interroghino i loro mariti, perchè è cosa indecente per una donna parlare nella chiesa.
36 Do you real y think that you are the source of the word of God? Or that you are the only people towhom it has come?	36 E' forse venuta da voi la parola di Dio? O è giunta soltanto a voi?
37 Anyone who claims to be a prophet, or to have any spiritual powers must recognise that what I amwriting to you is a commandment from the Lord.	37 Se qualcuno si tiene per profeta o per uomo spirituale dovrà riconoscere che le cose che vi scrivo sono precetti del Signore.
38 If anyone does not recognise this, it is because that person is not recognised himself.	38 E se qualcuno le vuole ignorare, sarà ignorato.
39 So, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not suppress the gift of speaking in tongues.	39 Così dunque, o fratelli, bramate di profetare, senza impedire di parlare in altre lingue.
40 But make sure that everything is done in a proper and orderly fashion.	40 Tutto poi sia fatto con decoro e con ordine.
