1 Make love your aim; but be eager, too, for spiritual gifts, and especial y for prophesying.	1 Tenete dietro alla carità, ambite i doni spirituali: e massimamente il profetare.
2 Those who speak in a tongue speak to God, but not to other people, because nobody understandsthem; they are speaking in the Spirit and the meaning is hidden.	2 Imperocché chi parla una lingua, non parla agli uomini, ma a Dio: conciossiachè nissuno l'ascolta. Ma parla misterj per Ispirito.
3 On the other hand, someone who prophesies speaks to other people, building them up and givingthem encouragement and reassurance.	3 Ma colui, che profeta, parla agli uomini per edificazione, ed esortazione, e consolazione.
4 Those who speak in a tongue may build themselves up, but those who prophesy build up thecommunity.	4 Chi parla le lingue, edifica se stesso: ma colui, che profeta, edifica la Chiesa di Dio.
5 While I should like you all to speak in tongues, I would much rather you could prophesy; since thosewho prophesy are of greater importance than those who speak in tongues, unless they can interpret what theysay so that the church is built up by it.	5 Vorrei, che tutti, voi parlaste le lingue: ma anche più, che profetaste. Imperocché è da più chi profeta, che chi parla le lingue: se a sorte non le interpreta, affinchè la Chiesa ne riceva edificazione.
6 Now suppose, brothers, I come to you and speak in tongues, what good shal I do you if my speakingprovides no revelation or knowledge or prophecy or instruction?	6 Ora poi, o fratelli, se io verrò a voi parlando le lingue, che bene vi farò, eccettochè io vi parli, o con la rivelazione, o con la scienza, o con la profezia, o con la dottrina?
7 It is the same with an inanimate musical instrument. If it does not make any distinction between notes,how can one recognise what is being played on flute or lyre?	7 Similmente le cose inanimate, che danno suono, e la tromba, e la celerà, se non danno distinzione di suoni; come si saprà egli quel, che sulla tromba si canti, o sulla cetera?
8 If the trumpet sounds a cal which is unrecognisable, who is going to get ready for the attack?	8 Imperocché se la tromba darà suono incerto; chi si metterà in ordine per la battaglia?
9 It is the same with you: if you do not use your tongue to produce speech that can be readilyunderstood, how can anyone know what you are saying? You will be talking to the air.	9 Cosi voi pure parlando una lingua, se non farete un discorso ben intelligibile; come s'intenderà egli quello, che vien detto? Conciossiachè parlerete all'aria.
10 However many the languages used in the world, al of them use sound;	10 Sonovi, per esempio, tante sorte di lingue nel mondo: e tutte hanno le loro voci.
11 but if I do not understand the meaning of the sound, I am a barbarian to the person who is speaking,and the speaker is a barbarian to me.	11 Se io pertanto non saprò il valore delle voci, sarò barbaro per colui; a cui parlo: e colui, che parla, sarà barbaro per me.
12 So with you, as you are eager to have spiritual powers, aim to be rich in those which build up thecommunity.	12 Cosi voi pure, dacché siete amanti de' doni dello Spirito, fate si, che per edificazione della Chiesa ne abbondiate.
13 That is why anybody who speaks in a tongue must pray that he may be given the interpretation.	13 E perciò chi parla una lingua, domandi in grazia di interpretarla.
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit may be praying but my mind derives no fruit from it.	14 Imperocché se io fo orazione in una lingua, il mio spirito ora, ma la mente mia riman priva di frutto,
15 What then? I shal pray with the spirit, but I shall pray with the mind as wel : I shall sing praises withthe spirit and I shal sing praises with the mind as well.	15 Che farò adunque? Orerò collo spirito, orerò colla mente: salmeggerò collo spirito, salmeggerò colla mente.
16 Otherwise, if you say your blessing only with the spirit, how is the uninitiated person going to answer'Amen' to your thanksgiving, without understanding what you are saying?	16 Dappoiché se tu renderai grazie con lo spirito, quegli, che sta al posto dell'idiota, come risponderà egli amen al tuo rendimento di grazie? Mentre non intende quel, che tu dici:
17 You may be making your thanksgiving wel , but the other person is not built up at al .	17 Conciossiachè tu veramente ben fai il rendimento di grazie: ma l'albo non ne è edificato.
18 I thank God that I speak with tongues more than any of you;	18 Rendo grazie al mio Dio, che io parlo le lingue, che parlate tutti voi.
19 al the same, when I am in the assembly I would rather say five words with my mind, to instructothers as wel , than ten thousand words in a tongue.	19 Ma nella Chiesa bramo di dir piuttosto cinque parole, sicché io sia inteso per isruire anche gli altri: che dieci mila parole in altra lingua.
20 Brothers, do not remain children in your thinking; infants in wickedness-agreed, but in your thinkinggrown-ups.	20 Fratelli, non siate fanciulli nell'intelligenza, siate bensì pargoletti nella malizia: e perfetti nell'intendimento.
21 It says in the written Law: In strange tongues and in a foreign language I wil talk to this nation, andeven so they will refuse to listen, says the Lord.	21 Nella legge sta scritto: per altri linguaggi, e per altre labbra parlerò a questo popolo; e nemmen così mi daranno retta, dice il Signore.
22 So then, strange languages are significant not for believers, but for unbelievers; whereas on theother hand, prophesying is not for unbelievers, but for believers.	22 Le lingue adunque sono in segno non pe' fedeli, ma per gl' infedeli: la profezia poi non per gl' infedeli, ma pe' fedeli.
23 Suppose that, if the whole congregation were meeting and al of them speaking in tongues, andsome uninitiated people or unbelievers were to come in, don't you think they would say that you were all raving?	23 Se adunque si raduni insieme tutta la Chiesa, e tutti parlin le lingue, ed entrin dentro persone idiote, o infedeli: non dirann'elleno, che siete ammattiti?
24 But if you were al prophesying when an unbeliever or someone uninitiated came in, he would findhimself put to the test by al and judged by al	24 Ma se tutti profetano, ed entra un infedele, o un idiota, è convinto da tutti, è sentenziato da tutti:
25 and the secrets of his heart revealed; and so he would fal down on his face and worship God,declaring that God is indeed among you.	25 E per tal modo si manifesta quel, ch'egli ha occultamente nel cuore, e così gittatosi boccone, adorerà Dio, dichiarando, che Dio è veramente in voi.
26 Then what should it be like, brothers? When you come together each of you brings a psalm or someinstruction or a revelation, or speaks in a tongue or gives an interpretation. Let al these things be done in a waythat wil build up the community.	26 Che è adunque da fare, o fratelli? Qualunque volta vi radunate, ciascuno di voi ha, chi il cantico, chi l'insegnamento, la rivelazione, le lingue, l'interpretazione: ogni cosa facciasi per l'edificazione.
27 If there are to be any people speaking in a tongue, then let there be only two, or at the most three,and those one at a time, and let one of these interpret.	27 E se v' ha di coloro, che parlante lingue (parlino) due, o al più tre a vicenda, e uno interpreti.
28 If there is no interpreter, then let each of them be quiet in the assembly, and speak only to himselfand God.	28 Che se non siavi chi interpreti, nella Chiesa si tacciano, ma seco stessi, e con Dio favellino.
29 Let two prophets, or three, speak while the rest weigh their words;	29 De' profeti parlino due, o tre, e gli altri ne portino giudizio.
30 and if a revelation comes to someone else who is sitting by, the speaker should stop speaking.	30 Che se ad un altro, che siede, sia stata fatta rivelazione, il primo si taccia.
31 You can al prophesy, but one at a time, then al wil learn something and al receive encouragement.	31 Imperocché potete tutti profetare a un per uno: affinché tutti imparino, e tutti ricevano consolazione:
32 The prophetic spirit is to be under the prophets' control,	32 Gli spiriti de' profeti son sotto posti ai profeti.
33 for God is a God not of disorder but of peace. As in al the churches of God's holy people,	33 Imperocché Iddio non è Dio del disordine, ma della pace: conforme io insegno in tutte le Chiese de' santi.
34 women are to remain quiet in the assemblies, since they have no permission to speak: theirs is asubordinate part, as the Law itself says.	34 Le donne nelle Chiese stiano in silenzio, imperocché non è loro permesso di parlare, ma debbono star soggette, come dice anche la legge.
35 If there is anything they want to know, they should ask their husbands at home: it is shameful for awoman to speak in the assembly.	35 Che se bramano di esser istruite di alcuna posa in casa ne interroghino i loro mariti. Conciossiachè è cosa indecente per una donna il parlar nella Chiesa.
36 Do you real y think that you are the source of the word of God? Or that you are the only people towhom it has come?	36 E forse da voi venuta la parola di Dio? Oppure a voi soli è venuta?
37 Anyone who claims to be a prophet, or to have any spiritual powers must recognise that what I amwriting to you is a commandment from the Lord.	37 Se alcuno si tien per profeta, o per uomo spirituale, riconosca, che le cose, che io vi scrivo, sono precetti del Signore.
38 If anyone does not recognise this, it is because that person is not recognised himself.	38 Chi poi è ignorante, sarà ignorato.
39 So, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not suppress the gift of speaking in tongues.	39 Per la qual cosa, o fratelli, amate di profetare; e non vietate il parlare le lingue.
40 But make sure that everything is done in a proper and orderly fashion.	40 Ma tutte le cose facciansi convenientemente, e con ordine.
