1 Make love your aim; but be eager, too, for spiritual gifts, and especial y for prophesying.	1 Poursuivez l’amour et ambitionnez les dons spirituels, la prophétie avant tout.
2 Those who speak in a tongue speak to God, but not to other people, because nobody understandsthem; they are speaking in the Spirit and the meaning is hidden.	2 Celui qui parle dans une langue, parle à Dieu mais non aux hommes. Personne ne le comprend quand il dit en esprit des choses mystérieuses.
3 On the other hand, someone who prophesies speaks to other people, building them up and givingthem encouragement and reassurance.	3 Par contre, quand on prophétise, on affermit les autres, on les encourage et on les instruit.
4 Those who speak in a tongue may build themselves up, but those who prophesy build up thecommunity.	4 Celui qui parle dans une langue s’affermit lui-même, tandis que le prophète affermit l’Église.
5 While I should like you all to speak in tongues, I would much rather you could prophesy; since thosewho prophesy are of greater importance than those who speak in tongues, unless they can interpret what theysay so that the church is built up by it.	5 J’aimerais que tous vous parliez en langues, mais je préférerais vous voir prophétiser. C’est bien mieux de prophétiser que de parler en langues, à moins que quelqu’un puisse les interpréter pour le profit de toute l’Église.
6 Now suppose, brothers, I come to you and speak in tongues, what good shal I do you if my speakingprovides no revelation or knowledge or prophecy or instruction?	6 Regardez, frères, si je viens chez vous pour vous parler en langues, à quoi cela vous servira-t-il? C’est tout différent si j’ai une révélation pour vous, ou une parole de connaissance, ou une prophétie, ou un enseignement.
7 It is the same with an inanimate musical instrument. If it does not make any distinction between notes,how can one recognise what is being played on flute or lyre?	7 C’est pareil avec un instrument de musique, que vous preniez une flûte ou une cithare. S’il n’y a pas de notes avec leurs intervalles, qui reconnaîtra mon air de flûte ou de cithare?
8 If the trumpet sounds a cal which is unrecognisable, who is going to get ready for the attack?	8 Et si le son de la trompette ne ressemble à rien, qui va courir à son poste de combat?
9 It is the same with you: if you do not use your tongue to produce speech that can be readilyunderstood, how can anyone know what you are saying? You will be talking to the air.	9 C’est la même chose pour vous avec vos langues: qui va comprendre ce que vous avez dit, si vous ne dites rien clairement? Vous aurez parlé en l’air.
10 However many the languages used in the world, al of them use sound;	10 Il y a bien des langues dans le monde et chacune a ses mots.
11 but if I do not understand the meaning of the sound, I am a barbarian to the person who is speaking,and the speaker is a barbarian to me.	11 Mais si je ne connais pas le sens des mots, je serai un étranger pour celui qui parle et lui sera un étranger pour moi.
12 So with you, as you are eager to have spiritual powers, aim to be rich in those which build up thecommunity.	12 Tenez-en compte, et puisque vous vous intéressez aux dons spirituels, cherchez ceux qui construisent l’Église, de sorte que vous ne manquiez de rien.
13 That is why anybody who speaks in a tongue must pray that he may be given the interpretation.	13 Si quelqu’un parle dans une langue, qu’il demande à Dieu de lui donner un interprète.
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit may be praying but my mind derives no fruit from it.	14 Si je prie en langues, mon esprit est en prière mais mon intelligence reste vide.
15 What then? I shal pray with the spirit, but I shall pray with the mind as wel : I shall sing praises withthe spirit and I shal sing praises with the mind as well.	15 Est-ce bien? Je prierai en esprit, mais mon intelligence aussi devra prier. Je louerai Dieu en esprit, mais mon intelligence aussi le louera.
16 Otherwise, if you say your blessing only with the spirit, how is the uninitiated person going to answer'Amen' to your thanksgiving, without understanding what you are saying?	16 Si tu rends grâce en esprit, comment fera le débutant? Va-t-il dire “amen” après ton action de grâces? Il ne sait pas ce que tu as dit.
17 You may be making your thanksgiving wel , but the other person is not built up at al .	17 Tu as fait une belle action de grâces, mais cela ne lui a rien apporté.
18 I thank God that I speak with tongues more than any of you;	18 Je rends grâces à Dieu de ce que je parle en langues mieux que vous tous.
19 al the same, when I am in the assembly I would rather say five words with my mind, to instructothers as wel , than ten thousand words in a tongue.	19 Mais quand l’Église est réunie, j’aime mieux dire cinq paroles qui ont du sens et qui profitent à tous plutôt que 10 000 en langues.
20 Brothers, do not remain children in your thinking; infants in wickedness-agreed, but in your thinkinggrown-ups.	20 Frères, ne raisonnez pas comme des enfants. Pour faire le mal, oui, restez comme des enfants, mais raisonnez comme des adultes.
21 It says in the written Law: In strange tongues and in a foreign language I wil talk to this nation, andeven so they will refuse to listen, says the Lord.	21 Dans la Loi il est écrit: Je me servirai de gens d’autres langues et je parlerai à ce peuple par ces bouches étrangères. Mais même ainsi ils ne m’entendront pas - parole du Seigneur.
22 So then, strange languages are significant not for believers, but for unbelievers; whereas on theother hand, prophesying is not for unbelievers, but for believers.	22 Donc le parler en langues est un signe, non pour ceux qui croient, mais pour les non-croyants, alors que la prophétie est pour ceux qui croient, et non pour les incroyants.
23 Suppose that, if the whole congregation were meeting and al of them speaking in tongues, andsome uninitiated people or unbelievers were to come in, don't you think they would say that you were all raving?	23 Supposez pourtant que des débutants ou des incroyants arrivent quand l’Église entière est rassemblée, et que tous parlent en langues: que vont-ils dire? C’est du délire!
24 But if you were al prophesying when an unbeliever or someone uninitiated came in, he would findhimself put to the test by al and judged by al	24 Mais supposez que vous êtes tous en train de prophétiser, et voilà qu’arrive un débutant ou un incroyant. Tous aussitôt l’interpellent et lui disent ses vérités,
25 and the secrets of his heart revealed; and so he would fal down on his face and worship God,declaring that God is indeed among you.	25 et lui, voyant découverts les secrets de sa conscience, il tombe le visage contre terre, il adore Dieu et il reconnaît: Dieu est réellement au milieu de vous!
26 Then what should it be like, brothers? When you come together each of you brings a psalm or someinstruction or a revelation, or speaks in a tongue or gives an interpretation. Let al these things be done in a waythat wil build up the community.	26 Quelle est la conclusion, frères? Toutes les fois que vous vous réunissez, chacun peut intervenir avec un psaume, un enseignement, une révélation, un parler en langues, une interprétation de ce qui est dit en langues… Mais que tout soit constructif.
27 If there are to be any people speaking in a tongue, then let there be only two, or at the most three,and those one at a time, and let one of these interpret.	27 Qu’on parle en langues, soit, mais pas plus de deux ou trois, et avec un temps limité, et qu’il y ait un interprète.
28 If there is no interpreter, then let each of them be quiet in the assembly, and speak only to himselfand God.	28 Si personne n’est là pour interpréter, que ces gens se taisent dans l’assemblée et gardent leur parler en langues pour eux-mêmes et pour Dieu.
29 Let two prophets, or three, speak while the rest weigh their words;	29 Pour les prophètes, deux ou trois peuvent parler, et les autres ensuite feront le discernement.
30 and if a revelation comes to someone else who is sitting by, the speaker should stop speaking.	30 Si l’un de ceux qui sont restés assis reçoit une révélation, le premier se taira.
31 You can al prophesy, but one at a time, then al wil learn something and al receive encouragement.	31 Vous pourriez tous prophétiser, mais l’un après l’autre, de sorte que tous apprennent et que tous soient motivés.
32 The prophetic spirit is to be under the prophets' control,	32 Les esprits de la prophétie obéissent aux prophètes,
33 for God is a God not of disorder but of peace. As in al the churches of God's holy people,	33 car l’œuvre de Dieu n’est pas le désordre mais la paix. Comme dans toutes les Églises des saints…
34 women are to remain quiet in the assemblies, since they have no permission to speak: theirs is asubordinate part, as the Law itself says.	34 Que les femmes se taisent dans les Églises. Leur rôle n’est pas de prendre la parole, mais d’obéir, comme il est dit dans la Loi.
35 If there is anything they want to know, they should ask their husbands at home: it is shameful for awoman to speak in the assembly.	35 Si elles veulent en savoir davantage, elles demanderont à leur mari à la maison.
36 Do you real y think that you are the source of the word of God? Or that you are the only people towhom it has come?	36 Est-ce de chez vous que la parole de Dieu est venue ou êtes-vous les seuls chez qui elle est arrivée?
37 Anyone who claims to be a prophet, or to have any spiritual powers must recognise that what I amwriting to you is a commandment from the Lord.	37 Ceux d’entre vous qui passent pour prophètes ou spirituels reconnaîtront que ce que je vous écris est un ordre du Seigneur.
38 If anyone does not recognise this, it is because that person is not recognised himself.	38 Et si quelqu’un veut l’ignorer, lui aussi sera ignoré.
39 So, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not suppress the gift of speaking in tongues.	39 Donc frères, aspirez à la prophétie sans pour autant interdire qu’on parle en langues,
40 But make sure that everything is done in a proper and orderly fashion.	40 mais que tout se passe de façon digne et ordonnée.
