1 Make love your aim; but be eager, too, for spiritual gifts, and especial y for prophesying.	1 Buscad la caridad; pero aspirad también a los dones espirituales, especialmente a la profecía.
2 Those who speak in a tongue speak to God, but not to other people, because nobody understandsthem; they are speaking in the Spirit and the meaning is hidden.	2 Pues el que habla en lengua no habla a los hombres sino a Dios. En efecto, nadie le entiende: dice en espíritu cosas misteriosas.
3 On the other hand, someone who prophesies speaks to other people, building them up and givingthem encouragement and reassurance.	3 Por el contrario, el que profetiza, habla a los hombres para su edificación, exhortación y consolación.
4 Those who speak in a tongue may build themselves up, but those who prophesy build up thecommunity.	4 El que habla en lengua, se edifica a sí mismo; el que profetiza, edifica a toda la asamblea.
5 While I should like you all to speak in tongues, I would much rather you could prophesy; since thosewho prophesy are of greater importance than those who speak in tongues, unless they can interpret what theysay so that the church is built up by it.	5 Deseo que habléis todos en lenguas; prefiero, sin embargo, que profeticéis. Pues el que profetiza, supera al que habla en lenguas, a no ser que también interprete, para que la asamblea reciba edificación.
6 Now suppose, brothers, I come to you and speak in tongues, what good shal I do you if my speakingprovides no revelation or knowledge or prophecy or instruction?	6 Y ahora, hermanos, supongamos que yo vaya donde vosotros hablándoos en lenguas, ¿qué os aprovecharía yo, si mi palabra no os trajese ni revelación ni ciencia ni profecía ni enseñanza?
7 It is the same with an inanimate musical instrument. If it does not make any distinction between notes,how can one recognise what is being played on flute or lyre?	7 Así sucede con los instrumentos de música inanimados, tales como la flauta o la cítara. Si no dan distintamente los sonidos, ¿cómo se conocerá lo que toca la flauta o la cítara?
8 If the trumpet sounds a cal which is unrecognisable, who is going to get ready for the attack?	8 Y si la trompeta no da sino un sonido confuso, ¿quién se preparará para la batalla?
9 It is the same with you: if you do not use your tongue to produce speech that can be readilyunderstood, how can anyone know what you are saying? You will be talking to the air.	9 Así también vosotros: si al hablar no pronunciáis palabras inteligibles, ¿cómo se entenderá lo que decís? Es como si hablarais al viento.
10 However many the languages used in the world, al of them use sound;	10 Hay en el mundo no sé cuántas variedades de lenguas, y nada hay sin lenguaje.
11 but if I do not understand the meaning of the sound, I am a barbarian to the person who is speaking,and the speaker is a barbarian to me.	11 Mas si yo desconozco el valor del lenguaje seré un bárbaro para el que me habla; y el que me habla, un bárbaro para mí.
12 So with you, as you are eager to have spiritual powers, aim to be rich in those which build up thecommunity.	12 Así pues, ya que aspiráis a los dones espirituales, procurad abundar en ellos para la edificación de la asamblea.
13 That is why anybody who speaks in a tongue must pray that he may be given the interpretation.	13 Por tanto, el que habla en lengua, pida el don de interpretar.
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit may be praying but my mind derives no fruit from it.	14 Porque si oro en lengua, mi espíritu ora, pero mi mente queda sin fruto.
15 What then? I shal pray with the spirit, but I shall pray with the mind as wel : I shall sing praises withthe spirit and I shal sing praises with the mind as well.	15 Entonces, ¿qué hacer? Oraré con el espíritu, pero oraré también con la mente. Cantaré salmos con el espíritu, pero también los cantaré con la mente.
16 Otherwise, if you say your blessing only with the spirit, how is the uninitiated person going to answer'Amen' to your thanksgiving, without understanding what you are saying?	16 Porque si no bendices más que con el espíritu ¿cómo dirá «amén» a tu acción de gracias el que ocupa el lugar del no iniciado, pues no sabe lo que dices?
17 You may be making your thanksgiving wel , but the other person is not built up at al .	17 ¡Cierto!, tu acción de gracias es excelente; pero el otro no se edifica.
18 I thank God that I speak with tongues more than any of you;	18 Doy gracias a Dios porque hablo en lenguas más que todos vosotros;
19 al the same, when I am in the assembly I would rather say five words with my mind, to instructothers as wel , than ten thousand words in a tongue.	19 pero en la asamblea, prefiero decir cinco palabras con mi mente, para instruir a los demás, que 10.000 en lengua.
20 Brothers, do not remain children in your thinking; infants in wickedness-agreed, but in your thinkinggrown-ups.	20 Hermanos, no seáis niños en juicio. Sed niños en malicia, pero hombres maduros en juicio.
21 It says in the written Law: In strange tongues and in a foreign language I wil talk to this nation, andeven so they will refuse to listen, says the Lord.	21 Está escrito en la Ley: Por hombres de lenguas extrañas y por boca de extraños hablaré yo a este pueblo, y ni así me escucharán, dice el Señor.
22 So then, strange languages are significant not for believers, but for unbelievers; whereas on theother hand, prophesying is not for unbelievers, but for believers.	22 Así pues, las lenguas sirven de señal no para los creyentes, sino para los infieles; en cambio la profecía, no para los infieles, sino para los creyentes.
23 Suppose that, if the whole congregation were meeting and al of them speaking in tongues, andsome uninitiated people or unbelievers were to come in, don't you think they would say that you were all raving?	23 Si, pues, se reúne toda la asamblea y todos hablan en lenguas y entran en ella no iniciados o infieles, ¿no dirán que estáis locos?
24 But if you were al prophesying when an unbeliever or someone uninitiated came in, he would findhimself put to the test by al and judged by al	24 Por el contrario, si todos profetizan y entra un infiel o un no iniciado, será convencido por todos, juzgado por todos.
25 and the secrets of his heart revealed; and so he would fal down on his face and worship God,declaring that God is indeed among you.	25 Los secretos de su corazón quedarán al descubierto y, postrado rostro en tierra, adorará a Dios confesando que Dios está verdaderamente entre vosotros.
26 Then what should it be like, brothers? When you come together each of you brings a psalm or someinstruction or a revelation, or speaks in a tongue or gives an interpretation. Let al these things be done in a waythat wil build up the community.	26 ¿Qué concluir, hermanos? Cuando os reunís, cada cual puede tener un salmo, una instrucción, una revelación, un discurso en lengua, una interpretación; pero que todo sea para edificación.
27 If there are to be any people speaking in a tongue, then let there be only two, or at the most three,and those one at a time, and let one of these interpret.	27 Si se habla en lengua, que hablen dos, o a lo más, tres, y por turno; y que haya un interprete.
28 If there is no interpreter, then let each of them be quiet in the assembly, and speak only to himselfand God.	28 Si no hay quien interprete, guárdese silencio en la asamblea; hable cada cual consigo mismo y con Dios.
29 Let two prophets, or three, speak while the rest weigh their words;	29 En cuanto a los profetas, hablen dos o tres, y los demás juzguen.
30 and if a revelation comes to someone else who is sitting by, the speaker should stop speaking.	30 Si algún otro que está sentado tiene una revelación, cállese el primero.
31 You can al prophesy, but one at a time, then al wil learn something and al receive encouragement.	31 Pues podéis profetizar todos por turno para que todos aprendan y sean exhortados.
32 The prophetic spirit is to be under the prophets' control,	32 Los espíritus de los profetas están sometidos a los profetas,
33 for God is a God not of disorder but of peace. As in al the churches of God's holy people,	33 pues Dios no es un Dios de confusión, sino de paz. Como en todas la Iglesias de los santos,
34 women are to remain quiet in the assemblies, since they have no permission to speak: theirs is asubordinate part, as the Law itself says.	34 las mujeres cállense en las asambleas; que no les está permitido tomar la palabra antes bien, estén sumisas como también la Ley lo dice.
35 If there is anything they want to know, they should ask their husbands at home: it is shameful for awoman to speak in the assembly.	35 Si quieren aprender algo, pregúntenlo a sus propios maridos en casa; pues es indecoroso que la mujer hable en la asamblea.
36 Do you real y think that you are the source of the word of God? Or that you are the only people towhom it has come?	36 ¿Acaso ha salido de vosotros la palabra de Dios? O ¿solamente a vosotros ha llegado?
37 Anyone who claims to be a prophet, or to have any spiritual powers must recognise that what I amwriting to you is a commandment from the Lord.	37 Si alguien se cree profeta o inspirado por el Espíritu, reconozca en lo que os escribo un mandato del Señor.
38 If anyone does not recognise this, it is because that person is not recognised himself.	38 Si no lo conoce, tampoco él es conocido.
39 So, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not suppress the gift of speaking in tongues.	39 Por tanto, hermanos, aspirad al don de la profecía, y no estorbéis que se hable en lenguas.
40 But make sure that everything is done in a proper and orderly fashion.	40 Pero hágase todo con decoro y orden.
