1 Corinthians 14

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Make love your aim; but be eager, too, for spiritual gifts, and especial y for prophesying.	1 Recherchez la charité; aspirez aussi aux dons spirituels, surtout à celui de prophétie.
2 Those who speak in a tongue speak to God, but not to other people, because nobody understandsthem; they are speaking in the Spirit and the meaning is hidden.	2 Car celui qui parle en langue ne parle pas aux hommes, mais à Dieu; personne en effet necomprend: il dit en esprit des choses mystérieuses.
3 On the other hand, someone who prophesies speaks to other people, building them up and givingthem encouragement and reassurance.	3 Celui qui prophétise, au contraire, parle aux hommes; il édifie, exhorte, réconforte.
4 Those who speak in a tongue may build themselves up, but those who prophesy build up thecommunity.	4 Celui qui parle en langue s'édifie lui-même, celui qui prophétise édifie l'assemblée.
5 While I should like you all to speak in tongues, I would much rather you could prophesy; since thosewho prophesy are of greater importance than those who speak in tongues, unless they can interpret what theysay so that the church is built up by it.	5 Je voudrais, certes, que vous parliez tous en langues, mais plus encore que vous prophétisiez;car celui qui prophétise l'emporte sur celui qui parle en langues, à moins que ce dernier n'interprète, pour quel'assemblée en tire édification.
6 Now suppose, brothers, I come to you and speak in tongues, what good shal I do you if my speakingprovides no revelation or knowledge or prophecy or instruction?	6 Et maintenant, frères, supposons que je vienne chez vous et vous parle en langues, en quoivous serai-je utile, si ma parole ne vous apporte ni révélation, ni science, ni prophétie, ni enseignement?
7 It is the same with an inanimate musical instrument. If it does not make any distinction between notes,how can one recognise what is being played on flute or lyre?	7 Ainsi en est-il des instruments de musique, flûte ou cithare; s'ils ne donnent pasdistinctement les notes, comment saura-t-on ce que joue la flûte ou la cithare?
8 If the trumpet sounds a cal which is unrecognisable, who is going to get ready for the attack?	8 Et si la trompette n'émet qu'un son confus, qui se préparera au combat?
9 It is the same with you: if you do not use your tongue to produce speech that can be readilyunderstood, how can anyone know what you are saying? You will be talking to the air.	9 Ainsi de vous: si votre langue n'émet pas de parole intelligible, comment saura-t-on ce quevous dites? Vous parlerez en l'air.
10 However many the languages used in the world, al of them use sound;	10 Il y a, de par le monde, je ne sais combien d'espèces de langages, et rien n'est sans langage.
11 but if I do not understand the meaning of the sound, I am a barbarian to the person who is speaking,and the speaker is a barbarian to me.	11 Si donc j'ignore la valeur du langage, je ferai l'effet d'un Barbare à celui qui parle, et celuiqui parle me fera, à moi, l'effet d'un Barbare.
12 So with you, as you are eager to have spiritual powers, aim to be rich in those which build up thecommunity.	12 Ainsi de vous: puisque vous aspirez aux dons spirituels, cherchez à les avoir en abondancepour l'édification de l'assemblée.
13 That is why anybody who speaks in a tongue must pray that he may be given the interpretation.	13 C'est pourquoi celui qui parle en langue doit prier pour pouvoir interpréter.
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit may be praying but my mind derives no fruit from it.	14 Car, si je prie en langue, mon esprit est en prière, mais mon intelligence n'en retire aucunfruit.
15 What then? I shal pray with the spirit, but I shall pray with the mind as wel : I shall sing praises withthe spirit and I shal sing praises with the mind as well.	15 Que faire donc? Je prierai avec l'esprit, mais je prierai aussi avec l'intelligence. Je dirai unhymne avec l'esprit, mais je le dirai aussi avec l'intelligence.
16 Otherwise, if you say your blessing only with the spirit, how is the uninitiated person going to answer'Amen' to your thanksgiving, without understanding what you are saying?	16 Autrement, si tu ne bénis qu'en esprit, comment celui qui a rang de non-initié répondra-t-il"Amen!" à ton action de grâces, puisqu'il ne sait pas ce que tu dis?
17 You may be making your thanksgiving wel , but the other person is not built up at al .	17 Ton action de grâces est belle, certes, mais l'autre n'en est pas édifié.
18 I thank God that I speak with tongues more than any of you;	18 Je rends grâces à Dieu de ce que je parle en langues plus que vous tous;
19 al the same, when I am in the assembly I would rather say five words with my mind, to instructothers as wel , than ten thousand words in a tongue.	19 mais dans l'assemblée, j'aime mieux dire cinq paroles avec mon intelligence, pour instruireaussi les autres, que 10.000 en langue.
20 Brothers, do not remain children in your thinking; infants in wickedness-agreed, but in your thinkinggrown-ups.	20 Frères, ne soyez pas des enfants pour le jugement; des petits enfants pour la malice, soit,mais pour le jugement soyez des hommes faits.
21 It says in the written Law: In strange tongues and in a foreign language I wil talk to this nation, andeven so they will refuse to listen, says the Lord.	21 Il est écrit dans la Loi: C'est par des hommes d'une autre langue et par des lèvres d'étrangersque je parlerai à ce peuple, et même ainsi ils ne m'écouteront pas, dit le Seigneur.
22 So then, strange languages are significant not for believers, but for unbelievers; whereas on theother hand, prophesying is not for unbelievers, but for believers.	22 Ainsi donc, les langues servent de signe non pour les croyants, mais pour les infidèles: laprophétie, elle, n'est pas pour les infidèles mais pour les croyants.
23 Suppose that, if the whole congregation were meeting and al of them speaking in tongues, andsome uninitiated people or unbelievers were to come in, don't you think they would say that you were all raving?	23 Si donc l'Eglise entière se réunit ensemble et que tous parlent en langues, et qu'il entre desnon-initiés ou des infidèles, ne diront-ils pas que vous êtes fous?
24 But if you were al prophesying when an unbeliever or someone uninitiated came in, he would findhimself put to the test by al and judged by al	24 Mais si tous prophétisent et qu'il entre un infidèle ou un non-initié, le voilà repris par tous,jugé par tous;
25 and the secrets of his heart revealed; and so he would fal down on his face and worship God,declaring that God is indeed among you.	25 les secrets de son coeur sont dévoilés, et ainsi, tombant sur la face, il adorera Dieu, endéclarant que Dieu est réellement parmi vous.
26 Then what should it be like, brothers? When you come together each of you brings a psalm or someinstruction or a revelation, or speaks in a tongue or gives an interpretation. Let al these things be done in a waythat wil build up the community.	26 Que conclure, frères? Lorsque vous vous assemblez, chacun peut avoir un cantique, unenseignement, une révélation, un discours en langue, une interprétation. Que tout se passe de manière à édifier.
27 If there are to be any people speaking in a tongue, then let there be only two, or at the most three,and those one at a time, and let one of these interpret.	27 Parle-t-on en langue? Que ce soit le fait de deux ou de trois tout au plus, et à tour de rôle; etqu'il y ait un interprète.
28 If there is no interpreter, then let each of them be quiet in the assembly, and speak only to himselfand God.	28 S'il n'y a pas d'interprète, qu'on se taise dans l'assemblée; qu'on se parle à soi-même et àDieu.
29 Let two prophets, or three, speak while the rest weigh their words;	29 Pour les prophètes, qu'il y en ait deux ou trois à parler, et que les autres jugent.
30 and if a revelation comes to someone else who is sitting by, the speaker should stop speaking.	30 Si un autre qui est assis a une révélation, que le premier se taise.
31 You can al prophesy, but one at a time, then al wil learn something and al receive encouragement.	31 Car vous pouvez tous prophétiser à tour de rôle, pour que tous soient instruits et tousexhortés.
32 The prophetic spirit is to be under the prophets' control,	32 Les esprits des prophètes sont soumis aux prophètes;
33 for God is a God not of disorder but of peace. As in al the churches of God's holy people,	33 car Dieu n'est pas un Dieu de désordre, mais de paix. Comme dans toutes les Eglises dessaints,
34 women are to remain quiet in the assemblies, since they have no permission to speak: theirs is asubordinate part, as the Law itself says.	34 que les femmes se taisent dans les assemblées, car il ne leur est pas permis de prendre laparole; qu'elles se tiennent dans la soumission, selon que la Loi même le dit.
35 If there is anything they want to know, they should ask their husbands at home: it is shameful for awoman to speak in the assembly.	35 Si elles veulent s'instruire sur quelque point, qu'elles interrogent leur mari à la maison; car ilest inconvenant pour une femme de parler dans une assemblée.
36 Do you real y think that you are the source of the word of God? Or that you are the only people towhom it has come?	36 Est-ce de chez vous qu'est sortie la parole de Dieu? Ou bien, est-ce à vous seuls qu'elle estparvenue?
37 Anyone who claims to be a prophet, or to have any spiritual powers must recognise that what I amwriting to you is a commandment from the Lord.	37 Si quelqu'un croit être prophète ou inspiré par l'Esprit, qu'il reconnaisse en ce que je vousécris un commandement du Seigneur.
38 If anyone does not recognise this, it is because that person is not recognised himself.	38 S'il l'ignore, c'est qu'il est ignoré.
39 So, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not suppress the gift of speaking in tongues.	39 Ainsi donc, mes frères, aspirez au don de prophétie, et n'empêchez pas de parler en langues.
40 But make sure that everything is done in a proper and orderly fashion.	40 Mais que tout se passe dignement et dans l'ordre.
