While they were stil talking to the people the priests came up to them, accompanied by the captain ofthe Temple and the Sadducees.1 But while they were speaking to the people, the priests and the magistrate of the temple and the Sadducees overwhelmed them,
They were extremely annoyed at their teaching the people the resurrection from the dead by proclaimingthe resurrection of Jesus.2 being grieved that they were teaching the people and announcing in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
They arrested them, and, as it was already late, they kept them in prison till the next day.3 And they laid hands on them, and they placed them under guard until the next day. For it was now evening.
But many of those who had listened to their message became believers; the total number of men hadnow risen to something like five thousand.4 But many of those who had heard the word believed. And the number of men became five thousand.
It happened that the next day the rulers, elders and scribes held a meeting in Jerusalem5 And it happened on the next day that their leaders and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem,
with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, Jonathan, Alexander and al the members of the high-priestlyfamilies.6 including Annas, the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John and Alexander, and as many as were of the priestly family.
They made the prisoners stand in the middle and began to interrogate them, 'By what power, and bywhose name have you men done this?'7 And stationing them in the middle, they questioned them: “By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?”
Then Peter, fil ed with the Holy Spirit, addressed them, 'Rulers of the people, and elders!8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Leaders of the people and elders, listen.
If you are questioning us today about an act of kindness to a cripple and asking us how he was healed,9 If we today are judged by a good deed done to an infirm man, by which he has been made whole,
you must know, all of you, and the whole people of Israel, that it is by the name of Jesus Christ theNazarene, whom you crucified, and God raised from the dead, by this name and by no other that this manstands before you cured.10 let it be known to all of you and to all of the people of Israel, that in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God has raised from the dead, by him, this man stands before you, healthy.
This is the stone which you, the builders, rejected but which has become the cornerstone. Only in himis there salvation;11 He is the stone, which was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the head of the corner.
for of al the names in the world given to men, this is the only one by which we can be saved.'12 And there is no salvation in any other. For there is no other name under heaven given to men, by which it is necessary for us to be saved.”
They were astonished at the fearlessness shown by Peter and John, considering that they wereuneducated laymen; and they recognised them as associates of Jesus;13 Then, seeing the constancy of Peter and John, having verified that they were men without letters or learning, they wondered. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.
but when they saw the man who had been cured standing by their side, they could find no answer.14 Also, seeing the man who had been cured standing with them, they were unable to say anything to contradict them.
So they ordered them to stand outside while the Sanhedrin had a private discussion.15 But they ordered them to withdraw outside, away from the council, and they conferred among themselves,
'What are we going to do with these men?' they asked. 'It is obvious to everybody in Jerusalem that anotable miracle has been worked through them, and we cannot deny it.16 saying: “What shall we do to these men? For certainly a public sign has been done through them, before all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. It is manifest, and we cannot deny it.
But to stop the whole thing spreading any further among the people, let us threaten them against everspeaking to anyone in this name again.'17 But lest it spread further among the people, let us threaten them not to speak anymore in this name to any man.”
So they cal ed them in and gave them a warning on no account to make statements or to teach in thename of Jesus.18 And calling them in, they warned them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
But Peter and John retorted, 'You must judge whether in God's eyes it is right to listen to you and not toGod.19 Yet truly, Peter and John said in response to them: “Judge whether it is just in the sight of God to listen to you, rather than to God.
We cannot stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard.'20 For we are unable to refrain from speaking the things that we have seen and heard.”
The court repeated the threats and then released them; they could not think of any way to punish them, since al the people were giving glory to God for what had happened.21 But they, threatening them, sent them away, having not found a way that they might punish them because of the people. For all were glorifying the things that had been done in these events.
The man who had been miraculously cured was over forty years old.22 For the man in whom this sign of a cure had been accomplished was more than forty years old.
As soon as they were released they went to the community and told them everything the chief priestsand elders had said to them.23 Then, having been released, they went to their own, and they reported in full what the leaders of the priests and the elders had said to them.
When they heard it they lifted up their voice to God with one heart. 'Master,' they prayed, 'it is you who made sky and earth and sea, and everything in them;24 And when they had heard it, with one accord, they lifted up their voice to God, and they said: “Lord, you are the One who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them,
it is you who said through the Holy Spirit and speaking through our ancestor David, your servant: Whythis uproar among the nations, this impotent muttering of the peoples?25 who, by the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said: ‘Why have the Gentiles been seething, and why have the people been pondering nonsense?
Kings on earth take up position, princes plot together against the Lord and his Anointed.26 The kings of the earth have stood up, and the leaders have joined together as one, against the Lord and against his Christ.’
'This is what has come true: in this very city Herod and Pontius Pilate plotted together with the gentilenations and the peoples of Israel, against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed,27 For truly Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, joined together in this city against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed
to bring about the very thing that you in your strength and your wisdom had predetermined shouldhappen.28 to do what your hand and your counsel had decreed would be done.
And now, Lord, take note of their threats and help your servants to proclaim your message with alfearlessness,29 And now, O Lord, look upon their threats, and grant to your servants that they may speak your word with all confidence,
by stretching out your hand to heal and to work miracles and marvels through the name of your holyservant Jesus.'30 by extending your hand in cures and signs and miracles, to be done through the name of your holy Son, Jesus.”
As they prayed, the house where they were assembled rocked. From this time they were all fil ed withthe Holy Spirit and began to proclaim the word of God fearlessly.31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered was moved. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. And they were speaking the Word of God with confidence.
The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul; no one claimed private ownership of anypossessions, as everything they owned was held in common.32 Then the multitude of believers were of one heart and one soul. Neither did anyone say that any of the things that he possessed were his own, but all things were common to them.
The apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power, and they wereal accorded great respect.33 And with great power, the Apostles were rendering testimony to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord. And great grace was in them all.
None of their members was ever in want, as al those who owned land or houses would sel them, andbring the money from the sale of them,34 And neither was anyone among them in need. For as many as were owners of fields or houses, selling these, were bringing the proceeds of the things that they were selling,
to present it to the apostles; it was then distributed to any who might be in need.35 and were placing it before the feet of the Apostles. Then it was divided to each one, just as he had need.
There was a Levite of Cypriot origin called Joseph whom the apostles surnamed Barnabas (whichmeans 'son of encouragement').36 Now Joseph, who the Apostles surnamed Barnabas (which is translated as ‘son of consolation’), who was a Levite of Cyprian descent,
He owned a piece of land and he sold it and brought the money and presented it to the apostles.37 since he had land, he sold it, and he brought the proceeds and placed these at the feet of the Apostles.
