NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
While they were stil talking to the people the priests came up to them, accompanied by the captain ofthe Temple and the Sadducees.1 Loquentibus autem illis ad populum, supervenerunt eis sa cerdotes etmagistratus templi et sadducaei,
They were extremely annoyed at their teaching the people the resurrection from the dead by proclaimingthe resurrection of Jesus.2 dolentes quod docerent populum etannuntiarent in Iesu resurrectionem ex mortuis;
They arrested them, and, as it was already late, they kept them in prison till the next day.3 et iniecerunt in eos manus etposuerunt in custodiam in crastinum; erat enim iam vespera.
But many of those who had listened to their message became believers; the total number of men hadnow risen to something like five thousand.4 Multi autem eorum,qui audierant verbum, crediderunt; et factus est numerus virorum quinque milia.
It happened that the next day the rulers, elders and scribes held a meeting in Jerusalem5 Factum est autem in crastinum, ut congregarentur principes eorum et senioreset scribae in Ierusalem,
with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, Jonathan, Alexander and al the members of the high-priestlyfamilies.6 et Annas princeps sacerdotum et Caiphas et Ioannes etAlexander et quotquot erant de genere sacerdotali,
They made the prisoners stand in the middle and began to interrogate them, 'By what power, and bywhose name have you men done this?'7 et statuentes eos in mediointerrogabant: “ In qua virtute aut in quo nomine fecistis hoc vos? ”.
Then Peter, fil ed with the Holy Spirit, addressed them, 'Rulers of the people, and elders!8 Tunc Petrus repletus Spiritu Sancto dixit ad eos: “ Principes populi etseniores,
If you are questioning us today about an act of kindness to a cripple and asking us how he was healed,9 si nos hodie diiudicamur in benefacto hominis infirmi, in quo istesalvus factus est,
you must know, all of you, and the whole people of Israel, that it is by the name of Jesus Christ theNazarene, whom you crucified, and God raised from the dead, by this name and by no other that this manstands before you cured.10 notum sit omnibus vobis et omni plebi Israel quia innomine Iesu Christi Nazareni, quem vos crucifixistis, quem Deus suscitavit amortuis, in hoc iste astat coram vobis sanus.
This is the stone which you, the builders, rejected but which has become the cornerstone. Only in himis there salvation;11 Hic est
lapis, qui reprobatus est a vobis aedificatoribus,
qui factus est in caput anguli.
for of al the names in the world given to men, this is the only one by which we can be saved.'12 Et non est in alio aliquo salus, nec enim nomen aliud est sub caelo datum inhominibus, in quo oportet nos salvos fieri ”.
They were astonished at the fearlessness shown by Peter and John, considering that they wereuneducated laymen; and they recognised them as associates of Jesus;13 Videntes autem Petri fiduciam et Ioannis, et comperto quod homines essentsine litteris et idiotae, admirabantur et cognoscebant eos quoniam cum Iesufuerant;
but when they saw the man who had been cured standing by their side, they could find no answer.14 hominem quoque videntes stantem cum eis, qui curatus fuerat, nihilpoterant contradicere.
So they ordered them to stand outside while the Sanhedrin had a private discussion.15 Iubentes autem eos foras extra concilium secedere,conferebant ad invicem
'What are we going to do with these men?' they asked. 'It is obvious to everybody in Jerusalem that anotable miracle has been worked through them, and we cannot deny it.16 dicentes: “ Quid faciemus hominibus istis? Quoniamquidem notum signum factum est per eos omnibus habitantibus in Ierusalemmanifestum, et non possumus negare;
But to stop the whole thing spreading any further among the people, let us threaten them against everspeaking to anyone in this name again.'17 sed ne amplius divulgetur in populum,comminemur eis, ne ultra loquantur in nomine hoc ulli hominum ”.
So they cal ed them in and gave them a warning on no account to make statements or to teach in thename of Jesus.18 Etvocantes eos denuntiaverunt, ne omnino loquerentur neque docerent in nomineIesu.
But Peter and John retorted, 'You must judge whether in God's eyes it is right to listen to you and not toGod.19 Petrus vero et Ioannes respondentes dixerunt ad eos: “ Si iustum estin conspectu Dei vos potius audire quam Deum, iudicate;
We cannot stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard.'20 non enim possumusnos, quae vidimus et audivimus, non loqui ”.
The court repeated the threats and then released them; they could not think of any way to punish them,since al the people were giving glory to God for what had happened.21 At illi ultra comminantesdimiserunt eos, nequaquam invenientes, quomodo punirent eos, propter populum,quia omnes glorificabant Deum in eo, quod acciderat;
The man who had been miraculously cured was over forty years old.22 annorum enim eratamplius quadraginta homo, in quo factum erat signum istud sanitatis.
As soon as they were released they went to the community and told them everything the chief priestsand elders had said to them.23 Dimissi autem venerunt ad suos et annuntiaverunt quanta ad eos principessacerdotum et seniores dixissent.
When they heard it they lifted up their voice to God with one heart. 'Master,' they prayed, 'it is you who made sky and earth and sea, and everything in them;24 Qui cum audissent, unanimiter levaveruntvocem ad Deum et dixerunt: “ Domine, tu, qui fecisti caelum et terram et mareet omnia, quae in eis sunt,
it is you who said through the Holy Spirit and speaking through our ancestor David, your servant: Whythis uproar among the nations, this impotent muttering of the peoples?25 qui Spiritu Sancto per os patris nostri Davidpueri tui dixisti:
“Quare fremuerunt gentes,
et populi meditati sunt inania?
Kings on earth take up position, princes plot together against the Lord and his Anointed.26 Astiterunt reges terrae,
et principes convenerunt in unum
adversus Dominum et adversus Christum eius”.
'This is what has come true: in this very city Herod and Pontius Pilate plotted together with the gentilenations and the peoples of Israel, against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed,27 Convenerunt enim vere in civitate ista adversus sanctum puerum tuum Iesum,quem unxisti, Herodes et Pontius Pilatus cum gentibus et populis Israel
to bring about the very thing that you in your strength and your wisdom had predetermined shouldhappen.28 facere, quaecumque manus tua et consilium praedestinavit fieri.
And now, Lord, take note of their threats and help your servants to proclaim your message with alfearlessness,29 Et nunc,Domine, respice in minas eorum et da servis tuis cum omni fiducia loqui verbumtuum,
by stretching out your hand to heal and to work miracles and marvels through the name of your holyservant Jesus.'30 in eo quod manum tuam extendas ad sanitatem et signa et prodigiafacienda per nomen sancti pueri tui Iesu ”.
As they prayed, the house where they were assembled rocked. From this time they were all fil ed withthe Holy Spirit and began to proclaim the word of God fearlessly.31 Et cum orassent, motus est locus, in quo erant congregati, et repleti suntomnes Sancto Spiritu et loquebantur verbum Dei cum fiducia.
The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul; no one claimed private ownership of anypossessions, as everything they owned was held in common.32 Multitudinis autem credentium erat cor et anima una, nec quisquam eorum, quaepossidebant, aliquid suum esse dicebat, sed erant illis omnia communia.
The apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power, and they wereal accorded great respect.33 Etvirtute magna reddebant apostoli testimonium resurrectionis Domini Iesu, etgratia magna erat super omnibus illis.
None of their members was ever in want, as al those who owned land or houses would sel them, andbring the money from the sale of them,34 Neque enim quisquam egens erat interillos; quotquot enim possessores agrorum aut domorum erant, vendentes afferebantpretia eorum, quae vendebant,
to present it to the apostles; it was then distributed to any who might be in need.35 et ponebant ante pedes apostolorum; dividebaturautem singulis, prout cuique opus erat.
There was a Levite of Cypriot origin called Joseph whom the apostles surnamed Barnabas (whichmeans 'son of encouragement').36 Ioseph autem, qui cognominatus estBarnabas ab apostolis — quod est interpretatum filius Consolationis —Levites, Cyprius genere,
He owned a piece of land and he sold it and brought the money and presented it to the apostles.37 cum haberet agrum, vendidit et attulit pecuniam etposuit ante pedes apostolorum.
