1 From there he went to Derbe, and then on to Lystra, where there was a disciple cal ed Timothy, whosemother was Jewish and had become a believer; but his father was a Greek.	1 Pervenne a Derbe e a Bistri. Ed ecco c'era un discepolo per nome Timoteo, figlio di donna giudea convertita e di padre genr tile.
2 The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke wel of him,	2 I fratelli di Iconio e di Listri rendevano di lui buona testimonianza.
3 and Paul, who wanted to have him as a travel ing companion, had him circumcised. This was onaccount of the Jews in the locality where everyone knew his father was a Greek.	3 Paolo desiderò condurlo seco e, presolo, lo cir­concise per riguardo ai Giudei che erano in quei luoghi, sapen­do tutti che il padre di lui era gentile.
4 As they visited one town after another, they passed on the decisions reached by the apostles andelders in Jerusalem, with instructions to observe them.	4 E passando di città in cit­tà, raccomandavano di osserva­re le parole stabilite dagli Apo­stoli e dagli Anziani di Gerusa­lemme.
5 So the churches grew strong in the faith, as well as growing daily in numbers.	5 E le chiese erano con­fermate nella fede e crescevano di numero ogni giorno.
6 They travel ed through Phrygia and the Galatian country, because they had been told by the Holy Spiritnot to preach the word in Asia.	6 Passate poi la Frigia e la Galazia, fu loro vietato dallo Spi­rito Santo d'annunziare la paro­la di Dio nell'Asia.
7 When they reached the frontier of Mysia they tried to go into Bithynia, but as the Spirit of Jesus wouldnot al ow them,	7 Ed essendo giunti nella Misia, tentavano di andare nella Bitinia, ma non lo permise loro lo Spirito di Gesù.
8 they went through Mysia and came down to Troas.	8 Traversata allora la Misia, scesero a Troade.
9 One night Paul had a vision: a Macedonian appeared and kept urging him in these words, 'Comeacross to Macedonia and help us.'	9 Durante la notte Paolo ebbe una visione: gli apparve un uomo di Macedonia e lo pregava dicen­do: Passa nella Macedonia e aiu­taci.
10 Once he had seen this vision we lost no time in arranging a passage to Macedonia, convinced thatGod had cal ed us to bring them the good news.	10 E appena egli ebbe avuta questa visione, cercammo subi­to di partire per la Macedonia, tenendo per certo che il Signore ci chiamava ad annunziarvi il Vangelo.
11 Sailing from Troas we made a straight run for Samothrace; the next day for Neapolis,	11 Partiti da Troade andammo direttamente a Samotracia, e il giorno seguente a Neapoli
12 and from there for Philippi, a Roman colony and the principal city of that district of Macedonia.	12 e di lì a Filippi, colonia che è la pri­ma città di quella parte della Macedonia. E restammo in tal città alcuni giorni tenendo con­ferenze.
13 After a few days in this city we went outside the gates beside a river as it was the Sabbath and thiswas a customary place for prayer. We sat down and preached to the women who had come to the meeting.	13 E di sabato uscimmo fuori di porta, vicino al fiume, dove pareva che fosse la preghiera, e sedutici parlammo alle donne accorse.
14 One of these women was called Lydia, a woman from the town of Thyatira who was in the purple-dyetrade, and who revered God. She listened to us, and the Lord opened her heart to accept what Paul was saying.	14 E una certa donna chiamata Lidia, della città di Tiatira, venditrice di porpora e timorata di Dio, ci ascoltò e il Signore le aprì il cuore per por mente a quello che diceva Paolo.
15 After she and her household had been baptised she kept urging us, 'If you judge me a true believer in the Lord,' she said, 'come and stay with us.' And she would take no refusal.	15 E battezzata che fu con la famiglia, pregò dicendo: Se giudicate ch'io sia fedele al Signore, venite e fermatevi in casa mia. E ci sforzò.
16 It happened one day that as we were going to prayer, we were met by a slave-girl who was asoothsayer and made a lot of money for her masters by foretel ing the future.	16 Avvenne poi che andando noi alla preghiera una serva che aveva lo spirito di Pitone ci venne incontro. Essa procurava molto guadagno ai suoi padroni col fare l'indovina.
17 This girl started fol owing Paul and the rest of us and shouting, 'Here are the servants of the MostHigh God; they have come to tel you how to be saved!'	17 Costei, seguitando Paolo e noi, gridava: Questi uomini sono servi di Dio Altissimo, che v'annunziano la via della salvezza.
18 She did this day after day until Paul was exasperated and turned round and said to the spirit, 'I orderyou in the name of Jesus Christ to leave that woman.' The spirit went out of her then and there.	18 E ciò faceva per molti giorni. Or Paolo, annoiatone, rivoltosi, disse allo spirito: In nome di Gesù Cristo, t'ingiungo di uscire da lei. E sull'istante se ne andò.
19 When her masters saw that there was no hope of making any more money out of her, they seizedPaul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the authorities.	19 Ma i padroni di lei, vedendo che la speranza del guadagno era svanita, presi Paolo e Sila li trassero al foro davanti ai magistrati
20 Taking them before the magistrates they said, 'These people are causing a disturbance in our city.They are Jews	20 e, presentatili ai capitani, dissero: Questi due uomini metton sossopra la nostra città, essendo Giudei,
21 and are advocating practices which it is unlawful for us as Romans to accept or fol ow.'	21 ed annunziano usi che non possiamo abbracciare nè praticare noi che siamo Romani.
22 The crowd joined in and showed its hostility to them, so the magistrates had them stripped andordered them to be flogged.	22 Allora il popolo insorse contro di essi, ed i magistrati, lacerate loro le vesti, li fecero battere con verghe;
23 They were given many lashes and then thrown into prison, and the gaoler was told to keep a closewatch on them.	23 e date loro molte battiture, li cacciarono in prigione, ingiungendo al custode di far ottima guardia.
24 So, fol owing such instructions, he threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in thestocks.	24 E lui, avuto simil comando, li cacciò nella più profonda segreta e strinse in ceppi i loro piedi.
25 In the middle of the night Paul and Silas were praying and singing God's praises, while the otherprisoners listened.	25 Or, verso mezzanotte, Paolo e Sila, messisi a pregare cantavano degli inni a Dio, e i carcerati stavano a sentirli.
26 Suddenly there was an earthquake that shook the prison to its foundations. Al the doors flew openand the chains fel from al the prisoners.	26 E subito venne un terremoto si grande che ne erano scosse le fondamenta della prigione; e le porte ad un tratto si spalancarono, e le catene di tutti i carcerati caddero a terra.
27 When the gaoler woke and saw the doors wide open he drew his sword and was about to commitsuicide, presuming that the prisoners had escaped.	27 Il custode del carcere, svegliatosi di soprassalto e visto aperte le porte della prigione, sguainata la spada, voleva uccidersi, credendo che i carcerati fossero fuggiti.
28 But Paul shouted at the top of his voice, 'Do yourself no harm; we are al here.'	28 Ma Paolo gli gridò ad alta voce: Non ti far male alcuno, chè siam qui tutti quanti.
29 He cal ed for lights, then rushed in, threw himself trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas,	29 Allora il carceriere, chiesto un lume, entrò dentro e si gettò tremante ai piedi di Paolo e di Sila,
30 and escorted them out, saying, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?'	30 poi condottili fuori disse: Signori, che debbo fare per essere salvo?
31 They told him, 'Become a believer in the Lord Jesus, and you wil be saved, and your household too.'	31 E quelli dissero: Credi nel Signore Gesù e sarai salvo tu e la tua famiglia.
32 Then they preached the word of the Lord to him and to al his household.	32 Ed annunziarono la parola del Signore a lui e a quanti erano in casa sua.
33 Late as it was, he took them to wash their wounds, and was baptised then and there with al hishousehold.	33 Ed egli, presili con sè in quella stessa ora di notte, lavò le loro piaghe e immediatamente fu battezzato con tutta la sua famiglia.
34 Afterwards he took them into his house and gave them a meal, and the whole household celebratedtheir conversion to belief in God.	34 E condottili a casa sua, apparecchiò loro da mangiare, giubilando per aver creduto a Dio con tutti i suoi.
35 When it was daylight the magistrates sent the lictors with the order: 'Release those men.'	35 Fattosi poi giorno, i magistrati mandarono i littori a dire: Metti in libertà quegli uomini.
36 The gaoler reported the message to Paul, 'The magistrates have sent an order for your release; youcan go now and be on your way.'	36 E il custode delle carceri annunziò queste parole a Paolo: I capitani hanno mandato a liberarvi; or dunque uscite e andatevene in pace.
37 'What!' Paul replied. 'Without trial they gave us a public flogging, though we are Roman citizens, andthrew us into prison, and now they want to send us away on the quiet! Oh no! They must come and escort us outthemselves.'	37 Ma Paolo disse loro: Dopo averci battuti pubblicamente, e senza processo, Romani come siamo, ci hanno messo in prigione: ed ora ci mandano via, di nascosto? Non sarà così, ma vengano
38 The lictors reported this to the magistrates, who were terrified when they heard they were Romancitizens.	38 essi stessi e ci traggano fuori. I littori riferirono queste parole ai magistrati, e questi, sentendo che erano Romani, ebbero paura;
39 They came and urged them to leave the town.	39 e andati li pregarono a scusarli e, liberatili, li esortarono a partire dalla città.
40 From the prison they went to Lydia's house where they saw all the brothers and gave them someencouragement; then they left.	40 Or essi, usciti dalla prigione, entrarono in casa di Lidia e, visti i fratelli e consolatili, se ne partirono.
