Acts of the Apostles 16

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 From there he went to Derbe, and then on to Lystra, where there was a disciple cal ed Timothy, whosemother was Jewish and had become a believer; but his father was a Greek.	1 Il gagna ensuite Derbé, puis Lystres. Il y avait là un disciple nommé Timothée, fils d'une juivedevenue croyante, mais d'un père grec.
2 The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke wel of him,	2 Les frères de Lystres et d'Iconium lui rendaient un bon témoignage.
3 and Paul, who wanted to have him as a travel ing companion, had him circumcised. This was onaccount of the Jews in the locality where everyone knew his father was a Greek.	3 Paul décida de l'emmener avec lui. Il le prit donc et le circoncit, à cause des Juifs qui se trouvaientdans ces parages, car tout le monde savait que son père était grec.
4 As they visited one town after another, they passed on the decisions reached by the apostles andelders in Jerusalem, with instructions to observe them.	4 Dans les villes où ils passaient, ils transmettaient, en recommandant de les observer, les décretsportés par les apôtres et les anciens de Jérusalem.
5 So the churches grew strong in the faith, as well as growing daily in numbers.	5 Ainsi les Eglises s'affermissaient dans la foi et croissaient en nombre de jour en jour.
6 They travel ed through Phrygia and the Galatian country, because they had been told by the Holy Spiritnot to preach the word in Asia.	6 Ils parcoururent la Phrygie et le territoire galate, le Saint Esprit les ayant empêchés d'annoncer laparole en Asie.
7 When they reached the frontier of Mysia they tried to go into Bithynia, but as the Spirit of Jesus wouldnot al ow them,	7 Parvenus aux confins de la Mysie, ils tentèrent d'entrer en Bithynie, mais l'Esprit de Jésus ne le leurpermit pas.
8 they went through Mysia and came down to Troas.	8 Ils traversèrent donc la Mysie et descendirent à Troas.
9 One night Paul had a vision: a Macedonian appeared and kept urging him in these words, 'Comeacross to Macedonia and help us.'	9 Or, pendant la nuit, Paul eut une vision: un Macédonien était là, debout, qui lui adressait cette prière:"Passe en Macédoine, viens à notre secours!"
10 Once he had seen this vision we lost no time in arranging a passage to Macedonia, convinced thatGod had cal ed us to bring them the good news.	10 Aussitôt après cette vision, nous cherchâmes à partir pour la Macédoine, persuadés que Dieu nousappelait à y porter la Bonne Nouvelle.
11 Sailing from Troas we made a straight run for Samothrace; the next day for Neapolis,	11 Embarqués à Troas, nous cinglâmes droit sur Samothrace, et le lendemain sur Néapolis,
12 and from there for Philippi, a Roman colony and the principal city of that district of Macedonia.	12 d'où nous gagnâmes Philippes, cité de premier rang de ce district de Macédoine et colonie. Nouspassâmes quelques jours dans cette ville,
13 After a few days in this city we went outside the gates beside a river as it was the Sabbath and thiswas a customary place for prayer. We sat down and preached to the women who had come to the meeting.	13 puis, le jour du sabbat, nous nous rendîmes en dehors de la porte, sur les bords de la rivière, où l'onavait l'habitude de faire la prière. Nous étant assis, nous adressâmes la parole aux femmes qui s'étaient réunies.
14 One of these women was called Lydia, a woman from the town of Thyatira who was in the purple-dyetrade, and who revered God. She listened to us, and the Lord opened her heart to accept what Paul was saying.	14 L'une d'elles, nommée Lydie, nous écoutait; c'était une négociante en pourpre, de la ville deThyatire; elle adorait Dieu. Le Seigneur lui ouvrit le coeur, de sorte qu'elle s'attacha aux paroles de Paul.
15 After she and her household had been baptised she kept urging us, 'If you judge me a true believer in the Lord,' she said, 'come and stay with us.' And she would take no refusal.	15 Après avoir été baptisée ainsi que les siens, elle nous fit cette prière: "Si vous me tenez pour unefidèle du Seigneur, venez demeurer dans ma maison." Et elle nous y contraignit.
16 It happened one day that as we were going to prayer, we were met by a slave-girl who was asoothsayer and made a lot of money for her masters by foretel ing the future.	16 Un jour que nous nous rendions à la prière, nous rencontrâmes une servante qui avait un espritdivinateur; elle faisait gagner beaucoup d'argent à ses maîtres en rendant des oracles.
17 This girl started fol owing Paul and the rest of us and shouting, 'Here are the servants of the MostHigh God; they have come to tel you how to be saved!'	17 Elle se mit à nous suivre, Paul et nous, en criant: "Ces gens-là sont des serviteurs du Dieu Très-Haut; ils vous annoncent la voie du salut."
18 She did this day after day until Paul was exasperated and turned round and said to the spirit, 'I orderyou in the name of Jesus Christ to leave that woman.' The spirit went out of her then and there.	18 Elle fit ainsi pendant bien des jours. A la fin Paul, excédé, se retourna et dit à l'esprit: "Je t'ordonneau nom de Jésus Christ de sortir de cette femme." Et l'esprit sortit à l'instant même.
19 When her masters saw that there was no hope of making any more money out of her, they seizedPaul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the authorities.	19 Mais ses maîtres, voyant disparaître leurs espoirs de gain, se saisirent de Paul et de Silas, lestraînèrent sur l'agora devant les magistrats
20 Taking them before the magistrates they said, 'These people are causing a disturbance in our city.They are Jews	20 et dirent, en les présentant aux stratèges: "Ces gens-là jettent le trouble dans notre ville. Ce sont desJuifs,
21 and are advocating practices which it is unlawful for us as Romans to accept or fol ow.'	21 et ils prêchent des usages qu'il ne nous est permis, à nous Romains, ni d'accepter ni de suivre."
22 The crowd joined in and showed its hostility to them, so the magistrates had them stripped andordered them to be flogged.	22 La foule s'ameuta contre eux, et les stratèges, après avoir fait arracher leurs vêtements, ordonnèrentde les battre de verges.
23 They were given many lashes and then thrown into prison, and the gaoler was told to keep a closewatch on them.	23 Quand ils les eurent bien roués de coups, ils les jetèrent en prison, en recommandant au geôlier deles garder avec soin.
24 So, fol owing such instructions, he threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in thestocks.	24 Ayant reçu pareille consigne, celui-ci les jeta dans le cachot intérieur et leur fixa les pieds dans desceps.
25 In the middle of the night Paul and Silas were praying and singing God's praises, while the otherprisoners listened.	25 Vers minuit, Paul et Silas, en prière, chantaient les louanges de Dieu; les prisonniers les écoutaient.
26 Suddenly there was an earthquake that shook the prison to its foundations. Al the doors flew openand the chains fel from al the prisoners.	26 Tout à coup, il se produisit un si violent tremblement de terre que les fondements de la prison enfurent ébranlés. A l'instant, toutes les portes s'ouvrirent, et les liens de tous les prisonniers se détachèrent.
27 When the gaoler woke and saw the doors wide open he drew his sword and was about to commitsuicide, presuming that the prisoners had escaped.	27 Tiré de son sommeil et voyant ouvertes les portes de la prison, le geôlier sortit son glaive; il allaitse tuer, à l'idée que les prisonniers s'étaient évadés.
28 But Paul shouted at the top of his voice, 'Do yourself no harm; we are al here.'	28 Mais Paul cria d'une voix forte: "Ne te fais aucun mal, car nous sommes tous ici."
29 He cal ed for lights, then rushed in, threw himself trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas,	29 Le geôlier demanda de la lumière, accourut et, tout tremblant, se jeta aux pieds de Paul et de Silas.
30 and escorted them out, saying, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?'	30 Puis il les fit sortir et dit: "Seigneurs, que me faut-il faire pour être sauvé?"
31 They told him, 'Become a believer in the Lord Jesus, and you wil be saved, and your household too.'	31 Ils répondirent: "Crois au Seigneur Jésus, et tu seras sauvé, toi et les tiens."
32 Then they preached the word of the Lord to him and to al his household.	32 Et ils lui annoncèrent la parole du Seigneur, ainsi qu'à tous ceux qui étaient dans sa maison.
33 Late as it was, he took them to wash their wounds, and was baptised then and there with al hishousehold.	33 Le geôlier les prit avec lui à l'heure même, en pleine nuit, lava leurs plaies et sur-le-champ reçut lebaptême, lui et tous les siens.
34 Afterwards he took them into his house and gave them a meal, and the whole household celebratedtheir conversion to belief in God.	34 Il les fit alors monter dans sa maison, dressa la table, et il se réjouit avec tous les siens d'avoir cruen Dieu.
35 When it was daylight the magistrates sent the lictors with the order: 'Release those men.'	35 Lorsqu'il fit jour, les stratèges envoyèrent les licteurs dire au geôlier: "Relâche ces gens-là."
36 The gaoler reported the message to Paul, 'The magistrates have sent an order for your release; youcan go now and be on your way.'	36 Celui-ci rapporta ces paroles à Paul: "Les stratèges ont envoyé dire de vous relâcher. Sortez donc etallez-vous-en."
37 'What!' Paul replied. 'Without trial they gave us a public flogging, though we are Roman citizens, andthrew us into prison, and now they want to send us away on the quiet! Oh no! They must come and escort us outthemselves.'	37 Mais Paul dit aux licteurs: "Ils nous ont fait battre en public et sans jugement, nous, des citoyensromains, et ils nous ont jetés en prison. Et maintenant, c'est à la dérobée qu'ils nous font sortir! Eh bien, non!Qu'ils viennent eux-mêmes nous libérer."
38 The lictors reported this to the magistrates, who were terrified when they heard they were Romancitizens.	38 Les licteurs rapportèrent ces paroles aux stratèges. Effrayés en apprenant qu'ils étaient citoyensromains,
39 They came and urged them to leave the town.	39 ceux-ci vinrent les presser de quitter la ville.
40 From the prison they went to Lydia's house where they saw all the brothers and gave them someencouragement; then they left.	40 Au sortir de la prison, Paul et Silas se rendirent chez Lydie, revirent les frères et les exhortèrent,puis ils partirent.
