NEW JERUSALEMGREEK BIBLE
From there he went to Derbe, and then on to Lystra, where there was a disciple cal ed Timothy, whosemother was Jewish and had become a believer; but his father was a Greek.1 Κατηντησε δε εις Δερβην και Λυστραν.
The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke wel of him,2 οστις ειχε καλην μαρτυριαν υπο των εν Λυστροις και Ικονιω αδελφων.
and Paul, who wanted to have him as a travel ing companion, had him circumcised. This was onaccount of the Jews in the locality where everyone knew his father was a Greek.3 Τουτον ηθελησεν ο Παυλος να εξελθη μεθ' εαυτου, και λαβων αυτον περιετεμε δια τους Ιουδαιους τους οντας εν τοις τοποις εκεινοις?
As they visited one town after another, they passed on the decisions reached by the apostles andelders in Jerusalem, with instructions to observe them.4 Ως δε διηρχοντο τας πολεις, παρεδιδον εις αυτους διαταγας να φυλαττωσι τα δογματα τα εγκεκριμενα υπο των αποστολων και των πρεσβυτερων των εν Ιερουσαλημ.
So the churches grew strong in the faith, as well as growing daily in numbers.5 Αι μεν λοιπον εκκλησιαι εστερεουντο εις την πιστιν και ηυξανοντο τον αριθμον καθ' ημεραν.
They travel ed through Phrygia and the Galatian country, because they had been told by the Holy Spiritnot to preach the word in Asia.6 Διελθοντες δε την Φρυγιαν και την γην της Γαλατιας, επειδη εμποδισθησαν υπο του Αγιου Πνευματος να κηρυξωσι τον λογον εν τη Ασια,
When they reached the frontier of Mysia they tried to go into Bithynia, but as the Spirit of Jesus wouldnot al ow them,7 ηλθον κατα την Μυσιαν και εδοκιμαζον να υπαγωσι προς την Βιθυνιαν?
they went through Mysia and came down to Troas.8 Περασαντες δε την Μυσιαν κατεβησαν εις Τρωαδα.
One night Paul had a vision: a Macedonian appeared and kept urging him in these words, 'Comeacross to Macedonia and help us.'9 Και οραμα εφανη δια νυκτος εις τον Παυλον.
Once he had seen this vision we lost no time in arranging a passage to Macedonia, convinced thatGod had cal ed us to bring them the good news.10 Και ως ειδε το οραμα, ευθυς εζητησαμεν να υπαγωμεν εις την Μακεδονιαν, συμπεραινοντες οτι ο Κυριος προσκαλει ημας, δια να κηρυξωμεν το ευαγγελιον προς αυτους.
Sailing from Troas we made a straight run for Samothrace; the next day for Neapolis,11 Αποπλευσαντες λοιπον απο της Τρωαδος, επερασαμεν κατ' ευθειαν εις Σαμοθρακην και την ακολουθον ημεραν εις Νεαπολιν
and from there for Philippi, a Roman colony and the principal city of that district of Macedonia.12 και εκειθεν εις Φιλιππους, ητις ειναι πρωτη πολις του μερους εκεινου της Μακεδονιας, αποικια Ρωμαικη.
After a few days in this city we went outside the gates beside a river as it was the Sabbath and thiswas a customary place for prayer. We sat down and preached to the women who had come to the meeting.13 και τη ημερα του σαββατου εξηλθομεν εξω της πολεως πλησιον του ποταμου, οπου εσυνειθιζετο να γινηται προσευχη, και καθησαντες ελαλουμεν προς τας εκει συνελθουσας γυναικας.
One of these women was called Lydia, a woman from the town of Thyatira who was in the purple-dyetrade, and who revered God. She listened to us, and the Lord opened her heart to accept what Paul was saying.14 Και γυνη τις Λυδια το ονομα, πωλητρια πορφυρας εκ πολεως Θυατειρων, σεβομενη τον Θεον, ηκουε, της οποιας ο Κυριος διηνοιξε την καρδιαν δια να προσεχη εις τα λαλουμενα υπο του Παυλου.
After she and her household had been baptised she kept urging us, 'If you judge me a true believer in the Lord,' she said, 'come and stay with us.' And she would take no refusal.15 Αφου δε εβαπτισθη αυτη και ο οικος αυτης, παρεκαλεσε λεγουσα?
It happened one day that as we were going to prayer, we were met by a slave-girl who was asoothsayer and made a lot of money for her masters by foretel ing the future.16 Ενω δε επορευομεθα εις την προσευχην, απηντησεν ημας δουλη τις εχουσα πνευμα πυθωνος, ητις εδιδε πολυ κερδος εις τους κυριους αυτης μαντευομενη.
This girl started fol owing Paul and the rest of us and shouting, 'Here are the servants of the MostHigh God; they have come to tel you how to be saved!'17 Αυτη ακολουθησασα τον Παυλον και ημας εκραζε, λεγουσα?
She did this day after day until Paul was exasperated and turned round and said to the spirit, 'I orderyou in the name of Jesus Christ to leave that woman.' The spirit went out of her then and there.18 Τουτο δε εκαμνεν επι πολλας ημερας.
When her masters saw that there was no hope of making any more money out of her, they seizedPaul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the authorities.19 Ιδοντες δε οι κυριοι αυτης οτι εξηλθεν η ελπις του κερδους αυτων, πιασαντες τον Παυλον και τον Σιλαν, εσυραν εις την αγοραν προς τους αρχοντας,
Taking them before the magistrates they said, 'These people are causing a disturbance in our city.
and are advocating practices which it is unlawful for us as Romans to accept or fol ow.'21 και διδασκουσιν εθιμα, τα οποια δεν ειναι εις ημας συγκεχωρημενον να παραδεχωμεθα μηδε να πραττωμεν, Ρωμαιοι οντες.
The crowd joined in and showed its hostility to them, so the magistrates had them stripped andordered them to be flogged.22 Και συνεφωρμησεν ο οχλος κατ' αυτων.
They were given many lashes and then thrown into prison, and the gaoler was told to keep a closewatch on them.23 και αφου εδωκαν εις αυτους πολλους ραβδισμους, εβαλον εις φυλακην, παραγγειλαντες τον δεσμοφυλακα να φυλαττη αυτους ασφαλως?
So, fol owing such instructions, he threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in thestocks.24 οστις λαβων τοιαυτην παραγγελιαν, εβαλεν αυτους εις την εσωτεραν φυλακην και συνεκλεισε τους ποδας αυτων εις το ξυλον.
In the middle of the night Paul and Silas were praying and singing God's praises, while the otherprisoners listened.25 Κατα δε το μεσονυκτιον ο Παυλος και ο Σιλας προσευχομενοι υμνουν τον Θεον?
Suddenly there was an earthquake that shook the prison to its foundations. Al the doors flew openand the chains fel from al the prisoners.26 Και εξαιφνης εγεινε σεισμος μεγας, ωστε εσαλευθησαν τα θεμελια του δεσμωτηριου, και παρευθυς ηνοιχθησαν πασαι αι θυραι και ελυθησαν παντων τα δεσμα.
When the gaoler woke and saw the doors wide open he drew his sword and was about to commitsuicide, presuming that the prisoners had escaped.27 Εξυπνησας δε ο δεσμοφυλαξ και ιδων ανεωγμενας τας θυρας της φυλακης, εσυρε μαχαιραν και εμελλε να θανατωση εαυτον, νομιζων οτι εφυγον οι δεσμιοι.
But Paul shouted at the top of his voice, 'Do yourself no harm; we are al here.'28 Πλην ο Παυλος εκραξε μετα φωνης μεγαλης, λεγων?
He cal ed for lights, then rushed in, threw himself trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas,29 Ζητησας δε φωτα εισεπηδησε, και εντρομος γενομενος επεσεν εμπροσθεν του Παυλου και του Σιλα,
and escorted them out, saying, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?'30 και εκβαλων αυτους εξω, ειπε? Κυριοι, τι πρεπει να καμω δια να σωθω;
They told him, 'Become a believer in the Lord Jesus, and you wil be saved, and your household too.'31 Οι δε ειπον?
Then they preached the word of the Lord to him and to al his household.32 Και ελαλησαν προς αυτον τον λογον του Κυριου και προς παντας τους εν τη οικια αυτου.
Late as it was, he took them to wash their wounds, and was baptised then and there with al hishousehold.33 Και παραλαβων αυτους εν εκεινη τη ωρα της νυκτος, ελουσε τας πληγας αυτων και εβαπτισθη ευθυς αυτος και παντες οι αυτου,
Afterwards he took them into his house and gave them a meal, and the whole household celebratedtheir conversion to belief in God.34 και αναβιβασας αυτους εις τον οικον αυτου παρεθηκε τραπεζαν, και ευφρανθη πανοικι πιστευσας εις το Θεον.
When it was daylight the magistrates sent the lictors with the order: 'Release those men.'35 Αφου δε εγεινεν ημερα, εστειλαν οι στρατηγοι τους ραβδουχους, λεγοντες?
The gaoler reported the message to Paul, 'The magistrates have sent an order for your release; youcan go now and be on your way.'36 Και ο δεσμοφυλαξ απηγγειλε τους λογους τουτους προς τον Παυλον, λεγων οτι οι στρατηγοι εστειλαν δια να απολυθητε?
'What!' Paul replied. 'Without trial they gave us a public flogging, though we are Roman citizens, andthrew us into prison, and now they want to send us away on the quiet! Oh no! They must come and escort us outthemselves.'37 Αλλ' ο Παυλος ειπε προς αυτους?
The lictors reported this to the magistrates, who were terrified when they heard they were Romancitizens.38 Ανηγγειλαν δε προς τους στρατηγους οι ραβδουχοι τους λογους τουτους?
They came and urged them to leave the town.39 και ελθοντες παρεκαλεσαν αυτους, και αφου εξεβαλον, παρεκαλουν αυτους να εξελθωσιν εκ της πολεως.
From the prison they went to Lydia's house where they saw all the brothers and gave them someencouragement; then they left.40 Οι δε εξελθοντες εκ της φυλακης, υπηγον εις τον οικον της Λυδιας, και ιδοντες τους αδελφους, παρηγορησαν αυτους και ανεχωρησαν.
