1 From there he went to Derbe, and then on to Lystra, where there was a disciple cal ed Timothy, whosemother was Jewish and had become a believer; but his father was a Greek.	1 Or egli giunse in Derba, ed in Listra; ed ecco, quivi era un certo discepolo, chiamato per nome Timoteo, figliuol d’una donna Giudea fedele, ma di padre Greco;
2 The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke wel of him,	2 del quale i fratelli, ch’erano in Listra, ed in Iconio, rendevan buona testimonianza.
3 and Paul, who wanted to have him as a travel ing companion, had him circumcised. This was onaccount of the Jews in the locality where everyone knew his father was a Greek.	3 Costui volle Paolo che andasse seco; e presolo, lo circoncise, per cagion de’ Giudei ch’erano in quei luoghi; perciocchè tutti sapevano che il padre d’esso era Greco.
4 As they visited one town after another, they passed on the decisions reached by the apostles andelders in Jerusalem, with instructions to observe them.	4 E passando essi per le città, ordinavano loro d’osservar gli statuti determinati dagli apostoli, e dagli anziani, ch’erano in Gerusalemme.
5 So the churches grew strong in the faith, as well as growing daily in numbers.	5 Le chiese adunque erano confermate nella fede, e di giorno in giorno crescevano in numero
6 They travel ed through Phrygia and the Galatian country, because they had been told by the Holy Spiritnot to preach the word in Asia.	6 Poi, avendo traversata la Frigia, e il paese della Galazia, essendo divietati dallo Spirito Santo d’annunziar la parola in Asia,
7 When they reached the frontier of Mysia they tried to go into Bithynia, but as the Spirit of Jesus wouldnot al ow them,	7 vennero in Misia, e tentavano d’andare in Bitinia; ma lo Spirito di Gesù nol permise loro.
8 they went through Mysia and came down to Troas.	8 E passata la Misia, discesero in Troas.
9 One night Paul had a vision: a Macedonian appeared and kept urging him in these words, 'Comeacross to Macedonia and help us.'	9 ED una visione apparve di notte a Paolo. Un uomo Macedone gli si presentò, pregandolo, e dicendo: Passa in Macedonia, e soccorrici.
10 Once he had seen this vision we lost no time in arranging a passage to Macedonia, convinced thatGod had cal ed us to bring them the good news.	10 E quando egli ebbe veduta quella visione, presto noi procacciammo di passare in Macedonia, tenendo per certo che il Signore ci avea chiamati là, per evangelizzare a que’ popoli.
11 Sailing from Troas we made a straight run for Samothrace; the next day for Neapolis,	11 E perciò, partendo di Troas, arrivammo per diritto corso in Samotracia, e il giorno seguente a Napoli;
12 and from there for Philippi, a Roman colony and the principal city of that district of Macedonia.	12 e di là a Filippi, ch’è la prima città di quella parte di Macedonia, ed è colonia; e dimorammo in quella città alquanti giorni.
13 After a few days in this city we went outside the gates beside a river as it was the Sabbath and thiswas a customary place for prayer. We sat down and preached to the women who had come to the meeting.	13 E nel giorno del sabato andammo fuor della città, presso del fiume, dove era il luogo ordinario dell’orazione; e postici a sedere, parlavamo alle donne ch’erano quivi raunate.
14 One of these women was called Lydia, a woman from the town of Thyatira who was in the purple-dyetrade, and who revered God. She listened to us, and the Lord opened her heart to accept what Paul was saying.	14 Ed una certa donna, chiamata per nome Lidia, mercatante di porpora, della città di Tiatiri, la qual serviva a Dio, stava ad ascoltare. E il Signore aperse il suo cuore, per attendere alle cose dette da Paolo.
15 After she and her household had been baptised she kept urging us, 'If you judge me a true believer in the Lord,' she said, 'come and stay with us.' And she would take no refusal.	15 E, dopo che fu battezzata ella e la sua famiglia, ci pregò dicendo: Se voi mi avete giudicata esser fedele al Signore, entrate in casa mia, e dimoratevi. E ci fece forza
16 It happened one day that as we were going to prayer, we were met by a slave-girl who was asoothsayer and made a lot of money for her masters by foretel ing the future.	16 Or avvenne, come noi andavamo all’orazione, che noi incontrammo una fanticella, che avea uno spirito di Pitone, la quale con indovinare facea gran profitto a’ suoi padroni.
17 This girl started fol owing Paul and the rest of us and shouting, 'Here are the servants of the MostHigh God; they have come to tel you how to be saved!'	17 Costei, messasi a seguitar Paolo e noi, gridava, dicendo: Questi uomini son servitori dell’Iddio altissimo, e vi annunziano la via della salute.
18 She did this day after day until Paul was exasperated and turned round and said to the spirit, 'I orderyou in the name of Jesus Christ to leave that woman.' The spirit went out of her then and there.	18 E fece questo per molti giorni; ma, essendone Paolo annoiato, si rivoltò, e disse allo spirito: Io ti comando, nel nome di Gesù Cristo, che tu esca fuor di lei. Ed egli uscì in quello stante.
19 When her masters saw that there was no hope of making any more money out of her, they seizedPaul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the authorities.	19 Or i padroni d’essa, veggendo che la speranza del lor guadagno era svanita, presero Paolo, e Sila, e li trassero alla corte a’ rettori.
20 Taking them before the magistrates they said, 'These people are causing a disturbance in our city.They are Jews	20 E presentatili a’ pretori, dissero: Questi uomini turbano la nostra città; perciocchè son Giudei;
21 and are advocating practices which it is unlawful for us as Romans to accept or fol ow.'	21 ed annunziano dei riti, i quali non è lecito a noi, che siam Romani, di ricevere, nè di osservare.
22 The crowd joined in and showed its hostility to them, so the magistrates had them stripped andordered them to be flogged.	22 La moltitudine ancora si levò tutta insieme contro a loro; e i pretori, stracciate loro le vesti, comandarono che fosser frustati.
23 They were given many lashes and then thrown into prison, and the gaoler was told to keep a closewatch on them.	23 E dopo aver loro data una gran battitura, li misero in prigione, comandando al carceriere di guardarli sicuramente.
24 So, fol owing such instructions, he threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in thestocks.	24 Il quale, ricevuto un tal comandamento, li mise nella prigione più addentro, e serrò loro i piedi ne’ ceppi
25 In the middle of the night Paul and Silas were praying and singing God's praises, while the otherprisoners listened.	25 Or in su la mezzanotte, Paolo e Sila, facendo orazione, cantavono inni a Dio; e i prigioni li udivano.
26 Suddenly there was an earthquake that shook the prison to its foundations. Al the doors flew openand the chains fel from al the prisoners.	26 E di subito si fece un gran tremoto, talchè i fondamenti della prigione furono scrollati; e in quello stante tutte le porte si apersero, e i legami di tutti si sciolsero.
27 When the gaoler woke and saw the doors wide open he drew his sword and was about to commitsuicide, presuming that the prisoners had escaped.	27 E il carceriere, destatosi, e vedute le porte della prigione aperte, trasse fuori la spada, ed era per uccidersi, pensando che i prigioni se ne fosser fuggiti.
28 But Paul shouted at the top of his voice, 'Do yourself no harm; we are al here.'	28 Ma Paolo gridò ad alta voce, dicendo: Non farti male alcuno; perciocchè noi siam tutti qui.
29 He cal ed for lights, then rushed in, threw himself trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas,	29 Ed egli, chiesto un lume, saltò dentro; e tutto tremante, si gettò a’ piedi di Paolo e di Sila.
30 and escorted them out, saying, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?'	30 E menatili fuori, disse: Signori, che mi conviene egli fare per esser salvato?
31 They told him, 'Become a believer in the Lord Jesus, and you wil be saved, and your household too.'	31 Ed essi dissero: Credi nel Signor Gesù Cristo, e sarai salvato tu, e la casa tua.
32 Then they preached the word of the Lord to him and to al his household.	32 Ed essi annunziarono la parola del Signore a lui, ed a tutti coloro ch’erano in casa sua.
33 Late as it was, he took them to wash their wounds, and was baptised then and there with al hishousehold.	33 Ed egli, presili in quell’istessa ora della notte, lavò loro le piaghe. Poi in quell’istante fu battezzato egli, e tutti i suoi.
34 Afterwards he took them into his house and gave them a meal, and the whole household celebratedtheir conversion to belief in God.	34 Poi, menatili in casa sua, mise loro la tavola; e giubilava d’avere, con tutta la sua casa, creduto a Dio
35 When it was daylight the magistrates sent the lictors with the order: 'Release those men.'	35 Ora, come fu giorno, i pretori mandarono i sergenti a dire al carceriere: Lascia andar quegli uomini.
36 The gaoler reported the message to Paul, 'The magistrates have sent an order for your release; youcan go now and be on your way.'	36 E il carceriere rapportò a Paolo queste parole, dicendo: I pretori hanno mandato a dire che siate liberati; ora dunque uscite, e andatevene in pace.
37 'What!' Paul replied. 'Without trial they gave us a public flogging, though we are Roman citizens, andthrew us into prison, and now they want to send us away on the quiet! Oh no! They must come and escort us outthemselves.'	37 Ma Paolo disse loro: Dopo averci pubblicamente battuti, senza essere stati condannati in giudicio, noi che siam Romani, ci hanno messi in prigione; ed ora celatamente ci mandano fuori! La cosa non andrà così; anzi, vengano eglino stessi, e ci menino fuori.
38 The lictors reported this to the magistrates, who were terrified when they heard they were Romancitizens.	38 E i sergenti rapportarono queste parole a’ pretori; ed essi temettero, avendo inteso ch’erano Romani.
39 They came and urged them to leave the town.	39 E vennero, e li pregarono di perdonar loro; e menatili fuori, li richiesero d’uscir della città.
40 From the prison they went to Lydia's house where they saw all the brothers and gave them someencouragement; then they left.	40 Ed essi, usciti di prigione, entrarono in casa di Lidia; e, veduti i fratelli, li consolarono, e poi si dipartirono
