Acts of the Apostles 15

NEW JERUSALEMLe Sainte Bible Fillion
Then some men came down from Judaea and taught the brothers, 'Unless you have yourselvescircumcised in the tradition of Moses you cannot be saved.'1 Or quelques-uns venus de Judée, enseignaient ainsi les frères: Si vous n'êtes pas circoncis selon l'usage de Moïse, vous ne pouvez pas être sauvés.
This led to disagreement, and after Paul and Barnabas had had a long argument with these men it wasdecided that Paul and Barnabas and others of the church should go up to Jerusalem and discuss the questionwith the apostles and elders.2 Une contestation très vive s'étant élevée entre Paul et Barnabé et eux, il fut résolu que Paul et Barnabé, et quelques-uns des autres, monteraient auprès des Apôtres et des prêtres à Jérusalem, pour traiter cette question.
The members of the church saw them off, and as they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria theytold how the gentiles had been converted, and this news was received with the greatest satisfaction by al thebrothers.3 Eux donc, après avoir été accompagnés par l'église, traversèrent la Phénicie et la Samarie, racontant la conversion des gentils, et ils causaient une grande joie à tous les frères.
When they arrived in Jerusalem they were welcomed by the church and by the apostles and elders,and gave an account of al that God had done through them.4 Arrivés à Jérusalem, ils furent reçus par l'église, par les Apôtres et par les anciens, et ils annoncèrent quelles grandes choses Dieu avait faites avec eux.
But certain members of the Pharisees' party who had become believers objected, insisting that gentilesshould be circumcised and instructed to keep the Law of Moses.5 Mais quelques-uns de la secte des pharisiens, devenus croyants, se levèrent, disant: Il faut circoncire les gentils, et leur ordoner d'observer la loi de Moïse.
The apostles and elders met to look into the matter,6 Alors les Apôtres et les anciens s'assemblèrent pour examiner cette affaire.
and after a long discussion, Peter stood up and addressed them. 'My brothers,' he said, 'you knowperfectly wel that in the early days God made his choice among you: the gentiles were to learn the good newsfrom me and so become believers.7 Comme il y avait une grande discussion, Pierre, se levant, leur dit: Mes frères, vous savez que depuis longtemps Dieu m'a choisi parmi nous, afin que les gentils entendissent par ma bouche la parole de l'Evangile, et qu'ils crussent.
And God, who can read everyone's heart, showed his approval of them by giving the Holy Spirit tothem just as he had to us.8 Et Dieu, qui connaît les coeurs, leur a rendu témoignage, leur donnant l'Esprit-Saint aussi bien qu'à nous;
God made no distinction between them and us, since he purified their hearts by faith.9 et Il n'a pas fait de différence entre nous et eux, purifiant leurs coeurs par la foi.
Why do you put God to the test now by imposing on the disciples the very burden that neither ourancestors nor we ourselves were strong enough to support?10 Maintenant, pourquoi tentez-vous donc Dieu, en voulant imposer sur le cou des disciples un joug que ni nos pères ni nous n'avons pu porter?
But we believe that we are saved in the same way as they are: through the grace of the Lord Jesus.'11 Mais c'est par la grâce du Seigneur Jésus-Christ que nous croyons être sauvés, de même qu'eux.
The entire assembly fell silent, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul describing al the signs andwonders God had worked through them among the gentiles.12 Alors toute la multitude se tut; et ils écoutaient Barnabé et Paul, qui racontaient quels grands miracles et prodiges Dieu avait faits par eux parmi les gentils.
When they had finished it was James who spoke. 'My brothers,' he said, 'listen to me.13 Après qu'ils se furent tus, Jacques prit la parole, et dit: Mes frères, écoutez-moi.
Simeon has described how God first arranged to enlist a people for his name out of the gentiles.14 Simon a raconté comment Dieu, pour la première fois, a visité les gentils, afin de choisir parmi eux un peuple consacré à Son nom.
This is entirely in harmony with the words of the prophets, since the scriptures say:15 Et avec cela concordent les paroles des prophètes, ainsi qu'il est écrit:
After that I shal return and rebuild the fal en hut of David; I shal make good the gaps in it and restoreit.16 Après ces choses Je reviendrai, et Je rebâtirai la tente de David, qui est tombée; Je réparerai ses ruines, et Je la relèverai;
Then the rest of humanity, and of al the nations once cal ed mine, will look for the Lord, says the Lordwho made this17 afin que le reste des hommes, et toutes les nations sur lesquelles Mon nom a été invoqué, cherchent le Seigneur, dit le Seigneur qui fait ces choses.
known so long ago.18 Le Seigneur connaît Son oeuvre de toute éternité.
'My verdict is, then, that instead of making things more difficult for gentiles who turn to God,19 C'est pourquoi je juge qu'il ne faut pas inquiéter ceux d'entre les gentils qui se convertissent à Dieu,
we should send them a letter tel ing them merely to abstain from anything polluted by idols, from il icitmarriages, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood.20 mais leur écrire de s'abstenir des souillures des idoles, de la fornication, des chairs étouffées, et du sang.
For Moses has always had his preachers in every town and is read aloud in the synagogues everySabbath.'21 Car Moïse, depuis les temps anciens, a dans chaque ville des hommes qui le prêchent dans les synagogues, où on le lit tous les jours de sabbat.
Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose delegates from amongthemselves to send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas, known as Barsabbas, and Silas, bothleading men in the brotherhood,22 Alors il plut aux Apôtres et aux anciens, ainsi qu'à toute l'église, de choisir quelques-uns d'entre eux, et de les envoyer à Antioche, avec Paul et Barnabé: Judas, surnommé Barsabas, et Silas, hommes éminents parmi les frères;
and gave them this letter to take with them: 'The apostles and elders, your brothers, send greetings tothe brothers of gentile birth in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia.23 et ils leur remirent cette lettre: Les Apôtres et les anciens, leurs frères, aux frères d'entre les gentils, qui sont à Antioche, en Syrie et en Cilicie, salut.
We hear that some people coming from here, but acting without any authority from ourselves, havedisturbed you with their demands and have unsettled your minds;24 Comme nous avons appris que quelques-uns, sortant du milieu de nous, sans aucun mandat de notre part, vous ont troublés par leurs discours et ont bouleversé vos âmes,
and so we have decided unanimously to elect delegates and to send them to you with our wel -beloved Barnabas and Paul,25 il nous a plu, après nous être réunis ensemble, de choisir et de vous envoyer des délégués avec nos très chers Barnabé et Paul,
who have committed their lives to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.26 ces hommes qui ont exposé leur vie pour le nom de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ.
Accordingly we are sending you Judas and Silas, who wil confirm by word of mouth what we havewritten.27 Nous avons donc envoyé Judas et Silas, qui vous rapporteront de vive voix les mêmes choses.
It has been decided by the Holy Spirit and by ourselves not to impose on you any burden beyondthese essentials:28 Car il a semblé bon à l'Esprit-Saint et à nous de ne pas vous imposer d'autre fardeau que ces choses nécessaires:
you are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals andfrom illicit marriages. Avoid these, and you wil do what is right. Farewel .'29 que vous vous absteniez des viandes sacrifiées aux idoles, du sang, des animaux étouffés, et de la fornication; en vous gardant de ces choses, vous ferez bien. Adieu.
The party left and went down to Antioch, where they summoned the whole community and deliveredthe letter.30 Ayant donc pris congé, ils descendirent à Antioche, et après avoir assemblé les fidèles, ils leur remirent la lettre.
The community read it and were delighted with the encouragement it gave them.31 Après l'avoir lue, ils se réjouirent de cette consolation.
Judas and Silas, being themselves prophets, spoke for a long time, encouraging and strengtheningthe brothers.32 Judas et Silas, qui étaient eux-mêmes prophètes, consolèrent et fortifièrent les frères par de nombreux discours.
These two spent some time there, and then the brothers wished them peace andwent back to thosewho had sent them.33 Après qu'ils furent demeurés là quelque temps, ils furent renvoyés en paix par les frères à ceux qui les avaient envoyés.
34 Cependant Silas jugea à propos de rester là, et Judas s'en alla seul à Jérusalem.
Paul and Barnabas, however, stayed on in Antioch, and there with many others they taught andproclaimed the good news, the word of the Lord.35 Paul et Barnabé demeuraient à Antioche, enseignant et annonçant avec plusieurs autres la parole du Seigneur.
On a later occasion Paul said to Barnabas, 'Let us go back and visit the brothers in all the townswhere we preached the word of the Lord, so that we can see how they are doing.'36 Mais après quelques jours, Paul dit à Barnabé: Retournons visiter les frères par toutes les villes où nous avons prêché la parole du Seigneur, pour voir en quel état ils sont.
Barnabas suggested taking John Mark,37 Or Barnabé voulait prendre aussi avec lui Jean, surnommé Marc.
but Paul was not in favour of taking along the man who had deserted them in Pamphylia and hadrefused to share in their work.38 Mais Paul lui représentait que celui qui les avait quittés en Pamphylie, et qui ne les avait pas accompagnés à l'ouvrage, de devait pas être pris avec eux.
There was sharp disagreement so that they parted company, and Barnabas sailed off with Mark toCyprus.39 Il y eut donc entre eux un dissentiment, de sorte qu'ils se séparèrent l'un de l'autre. Barnabé, ayant pris Marc avec lui, s'embarqua pour la Chypre,
Before Paul left, he chose Silas to accompany him and was commended by the brothers to the graceof God.40 Et Paul, ayant choisi Silas, partit, confié à la grâce de Dieu par les frères.
He travel ed through Syria and Cilicia, consolidating the churches.41 Il parcourait la Syrie et la Cilicie, fortifiant les églises, et ordonnant d'observer les prescriptions des Apôtres et des anciens.
