Acts of the Apostles 11

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 The apostles and the brothers in Judaea heard that gentiles too had accepted the word of God,	1 Cependant les apôtres et les frères de Judée apprirent que les païens, eux aussi, avaient accueilli laparole de Dieu.
2 and when Peter came up to Jerusalem the circumcised believers protested to him	2 Quand donc Pierre monta à Jérusalem, les circoncis le prirent à partie:
3 and said, 'So you have been visiting the uncircumcised and eating with them!'	3 "Pourquoi, lui demandèrent-ils, es-tu entré chez des incirconcis et as-tu mangé avec eux?"
4 Peter in reply gave them the details point by point,	4 Pierre alors se mit à leur exposer toute l'affaire point par point:
5 'One day, when I was in the town of Jaffa,' he began, 'I fell into a trance as I was praying and had avision of something like a big sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners. This sheet came right downbeside me.	5 "J'étais, dit-il, en prière dans la ville de Joppé quand, en extase, j'eus une vision: du ciel un objetdescendait, semblable à une grande nappe qui s'abaissait, tenue aux quatre coins, et elle vint jusqu'à moi.
6 I looked careful y into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles, and birds ofheaven.	6 Je regardais, ne la quittant pas des yeux, et j'y vis les quadrupèdes de la terre, les bêtes sauvages, lesreptiles ainsi que les oiseaux du ciel.
7 Then I heard a voice that said to me, "Now, Peter, kill and eat!"	7 J'entendis alors une voix me dire: Allons, Pierre, immole et mange'
8 But I answered, "Certainly not, Lord; nothing profane or unclean has ever crossed my lips."	8 Je répondis: Oh non! Seigneur, car rien de souillé ni d'impur n'entra jamais dans ma bouche'
9 And a second time the voice spoke from heaven, "What God has made clean, you have no right to callprofane."	9 Une seconde fois, la voix reprit du ciel: Ce que Dieu a purifié, toi, ne le dis pas souillé'
10 This was repeated three times, before the whole of it was drawn up to heaven again.	10 Cela se répéta par trois fois, puis tout fut de nouveau retiré dans le ciel.
11 'Just at that moment, three men stopped outside the house where we were staying; they had beensent from Caesarea to fetch me,	11 "Juste au même moment, trois hommes se présentèrent devant la maison où nous étions; ilsm'étaient envoyés de Césarée.
12 and the Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going back with them. The six brothers here camewith me as wel , and we entered the man's house.	12 L'Esprit me dit de les accompagner sans scrupule. Les six frères que voici vinrent également avecmoi et nous entrâmes chez l'homme en question.
13 He told us he had seen an angel standing in his house who said, "Send to Jaffa and fetch Simonknown as Peter;	13 Il nous raconta comment il avait vu un ange se présenter chez lui et lui dire: Envoie quérir à JoppéSimon, surnommé Pierre.
14 he has a message for you that wil save you and your entire household."	14 Il te dira des paroles qui t'apporteront le salut, à toi et à toute ta famille'
15 'I had scarcely begun to speak when the Holy Spirit came down on them in the same way as it cameon us at the beginning,	15 "Or, à peine avais-je commencé à parler que l'Esprit Saint tomba sur eux, tout comme sur nous audébut.
16 and I remembered that the Lord had said, "John baptised with water, but you will be baptised with theHoly Spirit."	16 Je me suis alors rappelé cette parole du Seigneur: Jean, disait-il, a baptisé avec de l'eau, mais vous,vous serez baptisés dans l'Esprit Saint.
17 I realised then that God was giving them the identical gift he gave to us when we believed in the LordJesus Christ; and who was I to stand in God's way?'	17 Si donc Dieu leur a accordé le même don qu'à nous, pour avoir cru au Seigneur Jésus Christ, quiétais-je, moi, pour faire obstacle à Dieu."
18 This account satisfied them, and they gave glory to God, saying, 'God has clearly granted to thegentiles too the repentance that leads to life.'	18 Ces paroles les apaisèrent, et ils glorifièrent Dieu en disant: "Ainsi donc aux païens aussi Dieu adonné la repentance qui conduit à la vie!"
19 Those who had scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen travel ed as far asPhoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, but they proclaimed the message only to Jews.	19 Ceux-là donc qui avaient été dispersés lors de la tribulation survenue à l'occasion d'Etiennepoussèrent jusqu'en Phénicie, à Chypre et à Antioche, mais sans prêcher la parole à d'autres qu'aux Juifs.
20 Some of them, however, who came from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch where they startedpreaching also to the Greeks, proclaiming the good news of the Lord Jesus to them.	20 Il y avait toutefois parmi eux quelques Chypriotes et Cyrénéens qui, venus à Antioche, s'adressaientaussi aux Grecs, leur annonçant la Bonne Nouvelle du Seigneur Jésus.
21 The Lord helped them, and a great number believed and were converted to the Lord.	21 La main du Seigneur les secondait, et grand fut le nombre de ceux qui embrassèrent la foi et seconvertirent au Seigneur.
22 The news of them came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem and they sent Barnabas out toAntioch.	22 La nouvelle en vint aux oreilles de l'Eglise de Jérusalem, et l'on députa Barnabé à Antioche.
23 There he was glad to see for himself that God had given grace, and he urged them all to remainfaithful to the Lord with heartfelt devotion;	23 Lorsqu'il arriva et qu'il vit la grâce accordée par Dieu, il s'en réjouit et les encouragea tous àdemeurer, d'un coeur ferme, fidèles au Seigneur;
24 for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and with faith. And a large number of people werewon over to the Lord.	24 car c'était un homme de bien, rempli de l'Esprit Saint et de foi. Une foule considérable s'adjoignitainsi au Seigneur.
25 Barnabas then left for Tarsus to look for Saul,	25 Barnabé partit alors chercher Saul à Tarse.
26 and when he found him he brought him to Antioch. And it happened that they stayed together in thatchurch a whole year, instructing a large number of people. It was at Antioch that the disciples were first cal ed'Christians'.	26 L'ayant trouvé, il l'amena à Antioche. Toute une année durant ils vécurent ensemble dans l'Eglise ety instruisirent une foule considérable. C'est à Antioche que, pour la première fois, les disciples reçurent le nomde "chrétiens."
27 While they were there some prophets came down to Antioch from Jerusalem,	27 En ces jours-là, des prophètes descendirent de Jérusalem à Antioche.
28 and one of them whose name was Agabus, seized by the Spirit, stood up and predicted that a severeand universal famine was going to happen. This in fact happened while Claudius was emperor.	28 L'un d'eux nommé Agabus, se leva et, sous l'action de l'Esprit, se mit à annoncer qu'il y aurait unegrande famine dans tout l'univers. C'est celle qui se produisit sous Claude.
29 The disciples decided to send relief, each to contribute what he could afford, to the brothers living inJudaea.	29 Les disciples décidèrent alors d'envoyer, chacun selon ses moyens, des secours aux frères de Judée;
30 They did this and delivered their contributions to the elders through the agency of Barnabas and Saul.	30 ce qu'ils firent, en les envoyant aux anciens par l'entremise de Barnabé et de Saul.
