NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
After he had said al this, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron valley where there was agarden into which he went with his disciples.1 Hæc cum dixisset Jesus, egressus est cum discipulis suis trans torrentem Cedron, ubi erat hortus, in quem introivit ipse, et discipuli ejus.
Judas the traitor knew the place also, since Jesus had often met his disciples there,2 Sciebat autem et Judas, qui tradebat eum, locum : quia frequenter Jesus convenerat illuc cum discipulis suis.
so Judas brought the cohort to this place together with guards sent by the chief priests and thePharisees, al with lanterns and torches and weapons.3 Judas ergo cum accepisset cohortem, et a pontificibus et pharisæis ministros, venit illuc cum laternis, et facibus, et armis.
Knowing everything that was to happen to him, Jesus came forward and said, 'Who are you lookingfor?'4 Jesus itaque sciens omnia quæ ventura erant super eum, processit, et dixit eis : Quem quæritis ?
They answered, 'Jesus the Nazarene.' He said, 'I am he.' Now Judas the traitor was standing amongthem.5 Responderunt ei : Jesum Nazarenum. Dicit eis Jesus : Ego sum. Stabat autem et Judas, qui tradebat eum, cum ipsis.
When Jesus said to them, 'I am he,' they moved back and fell on the ground.6 Ut ergo dixit eis : Ego sum : abierunt retrorsum, et ceciderunt in terram.
He asked them a second time, 'Who are you looking for?' They said, 'Jesus the Nazarene.'7 Iterum ergo interrogavit eos : Quem quæritis ? Illi autem dixerunt : Jesum Nazarenum.
Jesus replied, 'I have told you that I am he. If I am the one you are looking for, let these others go.'8 Respondit Jesus : Dixi vobis, quia ego sum : si ergo me quæritis, sinite hos abire.
This was to fulfil the words he had spoken, 'Not one of those you gave me have I lost.'9 Ut impleretur sermo, quem dixit : Quia quos dedisti mihi, non perdidi ex eis quemquam.
Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear.The servant's name was Malchus.10 Simon ergo Petrus habens gladium eduxit eum : et percussit pontificis servum, et abscidit auriculam ejus dexteram. Erat autem nomen servo Malchus.
Jesus said to Peter, 'Put your sword back in its scabbard; am I not to drink the cup that the Fatherhas given me?'11 Dixit ergo Jesus Petro : Mitte gladium tuum in vaginam. Calicem, quem dedit mihi Pater, non bibam illum ?
The cohort and its tribune and the Jewish guards seized Jesus and bound him.12 Cohors ergo, et tribunus, et ministri Judæorum comprehenderunt Jesum, et ligaverunt eum.
They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priestthat year.13 Et adduxerunt eum ad Annam primum : erat enim socer Caiphæ, qui erat pontifex anni illius.
It was Caiaphas who had counsel ed the Jews, 'It is better for one man to die for the people.'14 Erat autem Caiphas, qui consilium dederat Judæis : Quia expedit unum hominem mori pro populo.
Simon Peter, with another disciple, fol owed Jesus. This disciple, who was known to the high priest, went with Jesus into the high priest's palace,15 Sequebatur autem Jesum Simon Petrus, et alius discipulus. Discipulus autem ille erat notus pontifici, et introivit cum Jesu in atrium pontificis.
but Peter stayed outside the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the door-keeper and brought Peter in.16 Petrus autem stabat ad ostium foris. Exivit ergo discipulus alius, qui erat notus pontifici, et dixit ostiariæ : et introduxit Petrum.
The girl on duty at the door said to Peter, 'Aren't you another of that man's disciples?' He answered, 'Iam not.'17 Dicit ergo Petro ancilla ostiaria : Numquid et tu ex discipulis es hominis istius ? Dicit ille : Non sum.
Now it was cold, and the servants and guards had lit a charcoal fire and were standing there warming themselves; so Peter stood there too, warming himself with the others.18 Stabant autem servi et ministri ad prunas, quia frigus erat, et calefaciebant se : erat autem cum eis et Petrus stans, et calefaciens se.
The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.19 Pontifex ergo interrogavit Jesum de discipulis suis, et de doctrina ejus.
Jesus answered, 'I have spoken openly for al the world to hear; I have always taught in thesynagogue and in the Temple where al the Jews meet together; I have said nothing in secret.20 Respondit ei Jesus : Ego palam locutus sum mundo : ego semper docui in synagoga, et in templo, quo omnes Judæi conveniunt, et in occulto locutus sum nihil.
Why ask me? Ask my hearers what I taught; they know what I said.'21 Quid me interrogas ? interroga eos qui audierunt quid locutus sim ipsis : ecce hi sciunt quæ dixerim ego.
At these words, one of the guards standing by gave Jesus a slap in the face, saying, 'Is that the wayyou answer the high priest?'22 Hæc autem cum dixisset, unus assistens ministrorum dedit alapam Jesu, dicens : Sic respondes pontifici ?
Jesus replied, 'If there is some offence in what I said, point it out; but if not, why do you strike me?'23 Respondit ei Jesus : Si male locutus sum, testimonium perhibe de malo : si autem bene, quid me cædis ?
Then Annas sent him, bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.24 Et misit eum Annas ligatum ad Caipham pontificem.
As Simon Peter stood there warming himself, someone said to him, 'Aren't you another of hisdisciples?' He denied it saying, 'I am not.'25 Erat autem Simon Petrus stans, et calefaciens se. Dixerunt ergo ei : Numquid et tu ex discipulis ejus es ? Negavit ille, et dixit : Non sum.
One of the high priest's servants, a relation of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, 'Didn't I seeyou in the garden with him?'26 Dicit ei unus ex servis pontificis, cognatus ejus, cujus abscidit Petrus auriculam : Nonne ego te vidi in horto cum illo ?
Again Peter denied it; and at once a cock crowed.27 Iterum ergo negavit Petrus : et statim gallus cantavit.
They then led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was now morning. They did notgo into the Praetorium themselves to avoid becoming defiled and unable to eat the Passover.28 Adducunt ergo Jesum a Caipha in prætorium. Erat autem mane : et ipsi non introierunt in prætorium, ut non contaminarentur, sed ut manducarent Pascha.
So Pilate came outside to them and said, 'What charge do you bring against this man?' They replied,29 Exivit ergo Pilatus ad eos foras, et dixit : Quam accusationem affertis adversus hominem hunc ?
'If he were not a criminal, we should not have handed him over to you.'30 Responderunt, et dixerunt ei : Si non esset hic malefactor, non tibi tradidissemus eum.
Pilate said, 'Take him yourselves, and try him by your own Law.' The Jews answered, 'We are notal owed to put anyone to death.'31 Dixit ergo eis Pilatus : Accipite eum vos, et secundum legem vestram judicate eum. Dixerunt ergo ei Judæi : Nobis non licet interficere quemquam.
This was to fulfil the words Jesus had spoken indicating the way he was going to die.32 Ut sermo Jesu impleretur, quem dixit, significans qua morte esset moriturus.
So Pilate went back into the Praetorium and cal ed Jesus to him and asked him, 'Are you the king ofthe Jews?'33 Introivit ergo iterum in prætorium Pilatus : et vocavit Jesum, et dixit ei : Tu es rex Judæorum ?
Jesus replied, 'Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others said it to you about me?'34 Respondit Jesus : A temetipso hoc dicis, an alii dixerunt tibi de me ?
Pilate answered, 'Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you overto me: what have you done?'35 Respondit Pilatus : Numquid ego Judæus sum ? gens tua et pontifices tradiderunt te mihi : quid fecisti ?
Jesus replied, 'Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men wouldhave fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. As it is, my kingdom does not belong here.'36 Respondit Jesus : Regnum meum non est de hoc mundo. Si ex hoc mundo esset regnum meum, ministri mei utique decertarent ut non traderer Judæis : nunc autem regnum meum non est hinc.
Pilate said, 'So, then you are a king?' Jesus answered, 'It is you who say that I am a king. I was bornfor this, I came into the world for this, to bear witness to the truth; and al who are on the side of truth listen to myvoice.'37 Dixit itaque ei Pilatus : Ergo rex es tu ? Respondit Jesus : Tu dicis quia rex sum ego. Ego in hoc natus sum, et ad hoc veni in mundum, ut testimonium perhibeam veritati : omnis qui est ex veritate, audit vocem meam.
'Truth?' said Pilate. 'What is that?' And so saying he went out again to the Jews and said, 'I find nocase against him.38 Dicit ei Pilatus : Quid est veritas ? Et cum hoc dixisset, iterum exivit ad Judæos, et dicit eis : Ego nullam invenio in eo causam.
But according to a custom of yours I should release one prisoner at the Passover; would you like me,then, to release for you the king of the Jews?'39 Est autem consuetudo vobis ut unum dimittam vobis in Pascha : vultis ergo dimittam vobis regem Judæorum ?
At this they shouted, 'Not this man,' they said, 'but Barabbas.' Barabbas was a bandit.40 Clamaverunt ergo rursum omnes, dicentes : Non hunc, sed Barabbam. Erat autem Barabbas latro.
