John 18

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 After he had said al this, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron valley where there was agarden into which he went with his disciples.	1 Ayant dit cela, Jésus s'en alla avec ses disciples de l'autre côté du torrent du Cédron. Il y avait là unjardin dans lequel il entra, ainsi que ses disciples.
2 Judas the traitor knew the place also, since Jesus had often met his disciples there,	2 Or Judas, qui le livrait, connaissait aussi ce lieu, parce que bien des fois Jésus et ses disciples s'yétaient réunis.
3 so Judas brought the cohort to this place together with guards sent by the chief priests and thePharisees, al with lanterns and torches and weapons.	3 Judas donc, menant la cohorte et des gardes détachés par les grands prêtres et les Pharisiens, vient làavec des lanternes, des torches et des armes.
4 Knowing everything that was to happen to him, Jesus came forward and said, 'Who are you lookingfor?'	4 Alors Jésus, sachant tout ce qui allait lui advenir, sortit et leur dit: "Qui cherchez-vous?"
5 They answered, 'Jesus the Nazarene.' He said, 'I am he.' Now Judas the traitor was standing amongthem.	5 Ils lui répondirent: "Jésus le Nazôréen." Il leur dit: "C'est moi." Or Judas, qui le livrait, se tenait là, luiaussi, avec eux.
6 When Jesus said to them, 'I am he,' they moved back and fell on the ground.	6 Quand Jésus leur eut dit: "C'est moi", ils reculèrent et tombèrent à terre.
7 He asked them a second time, 'Who are you looking for?' They said, 'Jesus the Nazarene.'	7 De nouveau il leur demanda: "Qui cherchez-vous?" Ils dirent: "Jésus le Nazôréen."
8 Jesus replied, 'I have told you that I am he. If I am the one you are looking for, let these others go.'	8 Jésus répondit: "Je vous ai dit que c'est moi. Si donc c'est moi que vous cherchez, laissez ceux-là s'enaller":
9 This was to fulfil the words he had spoken, 'Not one of those you gave me have I lost.'	9 afin que s'accomplît la parole qu'il avait dite: "Ceux que tu m'as donnés, je n'en ai pas perdu un seul."
10 Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear.The servant's name was Malchus.	10 Alors Simon-Pierre, qui portait un glaive, le tira, frappa le serviteur du grand prêtre et lui tranchal'oreille droite. Ce serviteur avait nom Malchus.
11 Jesus said to Peter, 'Put your sword back in its scabbard; am I not to drink the cup that the Fatherhas given me?'	11 Jésus dit à Pierre: "Rentre le glaive dans le fourreau. La coupe que m'a donnée le Père, ne la boirai-jepas?"
12 The cohort and its tribune and the Jewish guards seized Jesus and bound him.	12 Alors la cohorte, le tribun et les gardes des Juifs saisirent Jésus et le lièrent.
13 They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priestthat year.	13 Ils le menèrent d'abord chez Anne; c'était en effet le beau-père de Caïphe, qui était grand prêtre cetteannée-là.
14 It was Caiaphas who had counsel ed the Jews, 'It is better for one man to die for the people.'	14 Or Caïphe était celui qui avait donné ce conseil aux Juifs: "Il y a intérêt à ce qu'un seul hommemeure pour le peuple."
15 Simon Peter, with another disciple, fol owed Jesus. This disciple, who was known to the high priest,went with Jesus into the high priest's palace,	15 Or Simon-Pierre suivait Jésus, ainsi qu'un autre disciple. Ce disciple était connu du grand prêtre etentra avec Jésus dans la cour du grand prêtre,
16 but Peter stayed outside the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out,spoke to the door-keeper and brought Peter in.	16 tandis que Pierre se tenait près de la porte, dehors. L'autre disciple, celui qui était connu du grandprêtre, sortit donc et dit un mot à la portière et il fit entrer Pierre.
17 The girl on duty at the door said to Peter, 'Aren't you another of that man's disciples?' He answered, 'Iam not.'	17 La servante, celle qui gardait la porte, dit alors à Pierre: "N'es-tu pas, toi aussi, des disciples de cethomme?" Lui, dit: "Je n'en suis pas."
18 Now it was cold, and the servants and guards had lit a charcoal fire and were standing there warming themselves; so Peter stood there too, warming himself with the others.	18 Les serviteurs et les gardes, qui avaient fait un feu de braise, parce que le temps était froid, setenaient là et se chauffaient. Pierre aussi se tenait là avec eux et se chauffait.
19 The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.	19 Le grand prêtre interrogea Jésus sur ses disciples et sur sa doctrine.
20 Jesus answered, 'I have spoken openly for al the world to hear; I have always taught in thesynagogue and in the Temple where al the Jews meet together; I have said nothing in secret.	20 Jésus lui répondit: "C'est au grand jour que j'ai parlé au monde, j'ai toujours enseigné à la synagogueet dans le Temple où tous les Juifs s'assemblent et je n'ai rien dit en secret.
21 Why ask me? Ask my hearers what I taught; they know what I said.'	21 Pourquoi m'interroges-tu? Demande à ceux qui ont entendu ce que je leur ai enseigné; eux, ils saventce que j'ai dit."
22 At these words, one of the guards standing by gave Jesus a slap in the face, saying, 'Is that the wayyou answer the high priest?'	22 A ces mots, l'un des gardes, qui se tenait là, donna une gifle à Jésus en disant: "C'est ainsi que turéponds au grand prêtre?"
23 Jesus replied, 'If there is some offence in what I said, point it out; but if not, why do you strike me?'	23 Jésus lui répondit: "Si j'ai mal parlé, témoigne de ce qui est mal; mais si j'ai bien parlé, pourquoi mefrappes-tu?"
24 Then Annas sent him, bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.	24 Anne l'envoya alors, toujours lié, au grand prêtre, Caïphe.
25 As Simon Peter stood there warming himself, someone said to him, 'Aren't you another of hisdisciples?' He denied it saying, 'I am not.'	25 Or Simon-Pierre se tenait là et se chauffait. Ils lui dirent: "N'es-tu pas, toi aussi, de ses disciples?"Lui le nia et dit: "Je n'en suis pas."
26 One of the high priest's servants, a relation of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, 'Didn't I seeyou in the garden with him?'	26 Un des serviteurs du grand prêtre, un parent de celui à qui Pierre avait tranché l'oreille, dit: "Ne t'ai-je pas vu dans le jardin avec lui?"
27 Again Peter denied it; and at once a cock crowed.	27 De nouveau Pierre nia, et aussitôt un coq chanta.
28 They then led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was now morning. They did notgo into the Praetorium themselves to avoid becoming defiled and unable to eat the Passover.	28 Alors ils mènent Jésus de chez Caïphe au prétoire. C'était le matin. Eux-mêmes n'entrèrent pas dansle prétoire, pour ne pas se souiller, mais pour pouvoir manger la Pâque.
29 So Pilate came outside to them and said, 'What charge do you bring against this man?' They replied,	29 Pilate sortit donc au-dehors, vers eux, et il dit: "Quelle accusation portez-vous contre cet homme?"
30 'If he were not a criminal, we should not have handed him over to you.'	30 Ils lui répondirent: "Si ce n'était pas un malfaiteur, nous ne te l'aurions pas livré."
31 Pilate said, 'Take him yourselves, and try him by your own Law.' The Jews answered, 'We are notal owed to put anyone to death.'	31 Pilate leur dit: "Prenez-le, vous, et jugez-le selon votre Loi." Les Juifs lui dirent: "Il ne nous est paspermis de mettre quelqu'un à mort":
32 This was to fulfil the words Jesus had spoken indicating the way he was going to die.	32 afin que s'accomplît la parole qu'avait dite Jésus, signifiant de quelle mort il devait mourir.
33 So Pilate went back into the Praetorium and cal ed Jesus to him and asked him, 'Are you the king ofthe Jews?'	33 Alors Pilate entra de nouveau dans le prétoire; il appela Jésus et dit: "Tu es le roi des Juifs?"
34 Jesus replied, 'Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others said it to you about me?'	34 Jésus répondit: "Dis-tu cela de toi-même ou d'autres te l'ont-ils dit de moi?"
35 Pilate answered, 'Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you overto me: what have you done?'	35 Pilate répondit: "Est-ce que je suis Juif, moi? Ta nation et les grands prêtres t'ont livré à moi. Qu'as-tu fait?"
36 Jesus replied, 'Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men wouldhave fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. As it is, my kingdom does not belong here.'	36 Jésus répondit: "Mon royaume n'est pas de ce monde. Si mon royaume était de ce monde, mes gensauraient combattu pour que je ne sois pas livré aux Juifs. Mais mon royaume n'est pas d'ici."
37 Pilate said, 'So, then you are a king?' Jesus answered, 'It is you who say that I am a king. I was bornfor this, I came into the world for this, to bear witness to the truth; and al who are on the side of truth listen to myvoice.'	37 Pilate lui dit: "Donc tu es roi?" Jésus répondit: "Tu le dis: je suis roi. Je ne suis né, et je ne suis venudans le monde, que pour rendre témoignage à la vérité. Quiconque est de la vérité écoute ma voix."
38 'Truth?' said Pilate. 'What is that?' And so saying he went out again to the Jews and said, 'I find nocase against him.	38 Pilate lui dit: "Qu'est-ce que la vérité?" Et, sur ce mot, il sortit de nouveau et alla vers les Juifs. Et illeur dit: "Je ne trouve en lui aucun motif de condamnation.
39 But according to a custom of yours I should release one prisoner at the Passover; would you like me,then, to release for you the king of the Jews?'	39 Mais c'est pour vous une coutume que je vous relâche quelqu'un à la Pâque. Voulez-vous que je vousrelâche le roi des Juifs?"
40 At this they shouted, 'Not this man,' they said, 'but Barabbas.' Barabbas was a bandit.	40 Alors ils vociférèrent de nouveau, disant: "Pas lui, mais Barabbas!" Or Barabbas était un brigand.
