John 18

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 After he had said al this, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron valley where there was agarden into which he went with his disciples.	1 Detto questo, Gesù uscì con i suoi discepoli al di là del torrente Cedron dove c'era un orto, in cui entrò con i suoi discepoli.
2 Judas the traitor knew the place also, since Jesus had often met his disciples there,	2 Anche Giuda, che lo stava tradendo, conosceva bene il posto, perché Gesù molte volte si era riunito là con i suoi discepoli.
3 so Judas brought the cohort to this place together with guards sent by the chief priests and thePharisees, al with lanterns and torches and weapons.	3 Giuda dunque, presa la coorte e le guardie dei sacerdoti-capi e dei farisei, vi si recò con lanterne, fiaccole ed armi.
4 Knowing everything that was to happen to him, Jesus came forward and said, 'Who are you lookingfor?'	4 Gesù, sapendo tutto ciò che stava per accadergli, si fece avanti e disse loro: "Chi cercate?".
5 They answered, 'Jesus the Nazarene.' He said, 'I am he.' Now Judas the traitor was standing amongthem.	5 Gli risposero: "Gesù il Nazareno". Dice loro: "Io sono". Stava con loro anche Giuda che lo tradiva.
6 When Jesus said to them, 'I am he,' they moved back and fell on the ground.	6 Quando ebbe detto loro: "Io sono", indietreggiarono e caddero a terra.
7 He asked them a second time, 'Who are you looking for?' They said, 'Jesus the Nazarene.'	7 Domandò allora di nuovo: "Chi cercate?". Ed essi dissero: "Gesù il Nazareno".
8 Jesus replied, 'I have told you that I am he. If I am the one you are looking for, let these others go.'	8 Gesù rispose: "Ve l'ho detto che sono io. Se dunque cercate me, lasciate andare via costoro".
9 This was to fulfil the words he had spoken, 'Not one of those you gave me have I lost.'	9 Così si adempì la parola che aveva detto: "Di quelli che mi hai dato non ne ho perduto nessuno".
10 Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear.The servant's name was Malchus.	10 Allora Simon Pietro, che aveva una spada, la sfoderò e colpì il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli mozzò l'orecchio destro; quel servo si chiamava Malco.
11 Jesus said to Peter, 'Put your sword back in its scabbard; am I not to drink the cup that the Fatherhas given me?'	11 Ma Gesù disse a Pietro: "Metti la spada nel fodero. Non dovrò forse bere il calice che il Padre mi ha dato?".
12 The cohort and its tribune and the Jewish guards seized Jesus and bound him.	12 Allora la coorte, il comandante e le guardie dei Giudei presero Gesù, lo legarono
13 They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priestthat year.	13 e lo portarono dapprima da Anna. Egli era infatti suocero di Caifa, sommo sacerdote in quell'anno.
14 It was Caiaphas who had counsel ed the Jews, 'It is better for one man to die for the people.'	14 Caifa era quello che aveva consigliato ai Giudei: "Conviene che muoia un solo uomo per il popolo".
15 Simon Peter, with another disciple, fol owed Jesus. This disciple, who was known to the high priest,went with Jesus into the high priest's palace,	15 Or seguivano Gesù Simon Pietro e un altro discepolo. Quel discepolo era noto al sommo sacerdote ed entrò con Gesù nel cortile del sommo sacerdote.
16 but Peter stayed outside the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out,spoke to the door-keeper and brought Peter in.	16 Pietro invece stava fuori, davanti alla porta. Uscì dunque l'altro discepolo noto al sommo sacerdote, parlò alla portinaia e fece entrare Pietro.
17 The girl on duty at the door said to Peter, 'Aren't you another of that man's disciples?' He answered, 'Iam not.'	17 Questa ragazza addetta alla porta disse a Pietro: "Non sei forse anche tu dei discepoli di quest'uomo?". Egli rispose: "Non lo sono".
18 Now it was cold, and the servants and guards had lit a charcoal fire and were standing there warming themselves; so Peter stood there too, warming himself with the others.	18 Poiché faceva freddo, i servi e le guardie avevano acceso un braciere e stavano là a scaldarsi. Pure Pietro stava con loro e si riscaldava.
19 The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.	19 Il sommo sacerdote interrogò Gesù riguardo ai suoi discepoli e alla sua dottrina.
20 Jesus answered, 'I have spoken openly for al the world to hear; I have always taught in thesynagogue and in the Temple where al the Jews meet together; I have said nothing in secret.	20 Gli rispose Gesù: "Io ho parlato apertamente al mondo. Io ho sempre insegnato nella sinagoga e nel tempio, dove si radunano tutti i Giudei, e di nascosto non ho mai detto nulla.
21 Why ask me? Ask my hearers what I taught; they know what I said.'	21 Perché mi interroghi? Interroga coloro che mi hanno ascoltato, che cosa ho detto loro. Ecco, essi sanno ciò che io ho detto".
22 At these words, one of the guards standing by gave Jesus a slap in the face, saying, 'Is that the wayyou answer the high priest?'	22 Non appena Gesù ebbe detto ciò, una delle guardie, che stava là, diede uno schiaffo a Gesù, dicendogli: "Così rispondi al sommo sacerdote?".
23 Jesus replied, 'If there is some offence in what I said, point it out; but if not, why do you strike me?'	23 Gli rispose Gesù: "Se ho parlato male, dimostra dov'è il male. Ma se ho parlato bene, perché mi percuoti?".
24 Then Annas sent him, bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.	24 Anna allora lo mandò, legato, dal sommo sacerdote Caifa.
25 As Simon Peter stood there warming himself, someone said to him, 'Aren't you another of hisdisciples?' He denied it saying, 'I am not.'	25 Simon Pietro, nel frattempo, stava là a scaldarsi. Gli dissero: "Non sei forse anche tu dei suoi discepoli?". Egli negò e disse: "Non lo sono".
26 One of the high priest's servants, a relation of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, 'Didn't I seeyou in the garden with him?'	26 Dice uno dei servi del sommo sacerdote, parente di quello a cui Pietro aveva mozzato l'orecchio: "Non ti ho visto io nell'orto con lui?".
27 Again Peter denied it; and at once a cock crowed.	27 Pietro allora negò di nuovo e subito un gallo cantò.
28 They then led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was now morning. They did notgo into the Praetorium themselves to avoid becoming defiled and unable to eat the Passover.	28 Allora condussero Gesù da Caifa al pretorio. Era di buon mattino. Essi non entrarono nel pretorio per non contaminarsi e poter così mangiare la Pasqua.
29 So Pilate came outside to them and said, 'What charge do you bring against this man?' They replied,	29 Uscì dunque Pilato fuori, da loro, e disse: "Quale accusa portate contro quest'uomo?".
30 'If he were not a criminal, we should not have handed him over to you.'	30 Gli risposero: "Se costui non fosse un malfattore, non te l'avremmo consegnato".
31 Pilate said, 'Take him yourselves, and try him by your own Law.' The Jews answered, 'We are notal owed to put anyone to death.'	31 Disse loro Pilato: "Prendetelo voi e giudicatelo secondo la vostra legge". Gli dissero i Giudei: "A noi non è permesso di mettere a morte nessuno".
32 This was to fulfil the words Jesus had spoken indicating the way he was going to die.	32 Doveva così adempiersi la parola che Gesù aveva pronunciato, indicando di quale morte doveva morire.
33 So Pilate went back into the Praetorium and cal ed Jesus to him and asked him, 'Are you the king ofthe Jews?'	33 Allora Pilato entrò di nuovo nel pretorio, chiamò Gesù e gli disse: "Tu sei il re dei Giudei?".
34 Jesus replied, 'Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others said it to you about me?'	34 Gesù rispose: "Dici questo da te stesso o altri te l'hanno detto di me?".
35 Pilate answered, 'Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you overto me: what have you done?'	35 Rispose Pilato: "Sono io forse un giudeo? La tua nazione e i sacerdoti-capi ti hanno consegnato a me. Che cosa hai fatto?".
36 Jesus replied, 'Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men wouldhave fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. As it is, my kingdom does not belong here.'	36 Rispose Gesù: "Il mio regno non è di questo mondo. Se di questo mondo fosse il mio regno, le mie guardie avrebbero combattuto perché non fossi consegnato ai Giudei. Ora, il mio regno non è di qui".
37 Pilate said, 'So, then you are a king?' Jesus answered, 'It is you who say that I am a king. I was bornfor this, I came into the world for this, to bear witness to the truth; and al who are on the side of truth listen to myvoice.'	37 Gli disse allora Pilato: "Dunque sei tu re?". Rispose Gesù: "Tu dici che io sono re. Io sono nato per questo e per questo sono venuto al mondo: per rendere testimonianza alla verità. Chiunque è dalla verità, ascolta la mia voce".
38 'Truth?' said Pilate. 'What is that?' And so saying he went out again to the Jews and said, 'I find nocase against him.	38 Gli dice Pilato: "Che cos'è la verità?". Detto questo, uscì di nuovo dai Giudei e disse loro: "Io non trovo in lui alcun capo di accusa.
39 But according to a custom of yours I should release one prisoner at the Passover; would you like me,then, to release for you the king of the Jews?'	39 Ma voi avete l'usanza che io vi liberi qualcuno a Pasqua. Volete dunque che vi liberi il re dei Giudei?".
40 At this they shouted, 'Not this man,' they said, 'but Barabbas.' Barabbas was a bandit.	40 Si misero allora a gridare: "Non lui, ma Barabba!". Barabba era un bandito.
