After he had said al this, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron valley where there was agarden into which he went with his disciples.1 When Jesus had said these things, he departed with his disciples across the Torrent of Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples.
Judas the traitor knew the place also, since Jesus had often met his disciples there,2 But Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus had frequently met with his disciples there.
so Judas brought the cohort to this place together with guards sent by the chief priests and thePharisees, al with lanterns and torches and weapons.3 Then Judas, when he had received a cohort from both the high priests and the attendants of the Pharisees, approached the place with lanterns and torches and weapons.
Knowing everything that was to happen to him, Jesus came forward and said, 'Who are you lookingfor?'4 And so Jesus, knowing all that was about to happen to him, advanced and said to them, “Who are you seeking?”
They answered, 'Jesus the Nazarene.' He said, 'I am he.' Now Judas the traitor was standing amongthem.5 They answered him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Now Judas, who betrayed him, was also standing with them.
When Jesus said to them, 'I am he,' they moved back and fell on the ground.6 Then, when he said to them, “I am he,” they moved back and fell to the ground.
He asked them a second time, 'Who are you looking for?' They said, 'Jesus the Nazarene.'7 Then again he questioned them: “Who are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.”
Jesus replied, 'I have told you that I am he. If I am the one you are looking for, let these others go.'8 Jesus responded: “I told you that I am he. Therefore, if you are seeking me, permit these others to go away.”
This was to fulfil the words he had spoken, 'Not one of those you gave me have I lost.'9 This was so that the word might be fulfilled, which he said, “Of those whom you have given to me, I have not lost any of them.”
Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear.The servant's name was Malchus.10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and he struck the servant of the high priest, and he cut off his right ear. Now the name of the servant was Malchus.
Jesus said to Peter, 'Put your sword back in its scabbard; am I not to drink the cup that the Fatherhas given me?'11 Therefore, Jesus said to Peter: “Set your sword into the scabbard. Should I not drink the chalice which my father has given to me?”
The cohort and its tribune and the Jewish guards seized Jesus and bound him.12 Then the cohort, and the tribune, and the attendants of the Jews apprehended Jesus and bound him.
They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priestthat year.13 And they led him away, first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year.
It was Caiaphas who had counsel ed the Jews, 'It is better for one man to die for the people.'14 Now Caiaphas was the one who had given counsel to the Jews that it was expedient for one man to die for the people.
Simon Peter, with another disciple, fol owed Jesus. This disciple, who was known to the high priest, went with Jesus into the high priest's palace,15 And Simon Peter was following Jesus with another disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and so he entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest.
but Peter stayed outside the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the door-keeper and brought Peter in.16 But Peter was standing outside at the entrance. Therefore, the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the woman who was the doorkeeper, and he led in Peter.
The girl on duty at the door said to Peter, 'Aren't you another of that man's disciples?' He answered, 'Iam not.'17 Therefore, the woman servant keeping the door said to Peter, “Are you not also among the disciples of this man?” He said, “I am not.”
Now it was cold, and the servants and guards had lit a charcoal fire and were standing there warming themselves; so Peter stood there too, warming himself with the others.18 Now the servants and attendants were standing before burning coals, for it was cold, and they were warming themselves. And Peter was standing with them also, warming himself.
The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.19 Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his doctrine.
Jesus answered, 'I have spoken openly for al the world to hear; I have always taught in thesynagogue and in the Temple where al the Jews meet together; I have said nothing in secret.20 Jesus responded to him: “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews meet. And I have said nothing in secret.
Why ask me? Ask my hearers what I taught; they know what I said.'21 Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I said to them. Behold, they know these things that I have said.”
At these words, one of the guards standing by gave Jesus a slap in the face, saying, 'Is that the wayyou answer the high priest?'22 Then, when he had said this, one the attendants standing nearby struck Jesus, saying: “Is this the way you answer the high priest?”
Jesus replied, 'If there is some offence in what I said, point it out; but if not, why do you strike me?'23 Jesus answered him: “If I have spoken wrongly, offer testimony about the wrong. But if I have spoken correctly, then why do you strike me?”
Then Annas sent him, bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.24 And Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.
As Simon Peter stood there warming himself, someone said to him, 'Aren't you another of hisdisciples?' He denied it saying, 'I am not.'25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. Then they said to him, “Are you not also one of his disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
One of the high priest's servants, a relation of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, 'Didn't I seeyou in the garden with him?'26 One of the servants of the high priest (a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off) said to him, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?”
Again Peter denied it; and at once a cock crowed.27 Therefore, again, Peter denied it. And immediately the rooster crowed.
They then led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was now morning. They did notgo into the Praetorium themselves to avoid becoming defiled and unable to eat the Passover.28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the praetorium. Now it was morning, and so they did not enter into the praetorium, so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
So Pilate came outside to them and said, 'What charge do you bring against this man?' They replied,29 Therefore, Pilate went outside to them, and he said, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?”
'If he were not a criminal, we should not have handed him over to you.'30 They responded and said to him, “If he were not an evil-doer, we would not have handed him over you.”
Pilate said, 'Take him yourselves, and try him by your own Law.' The Jews answered, 'We are notal owed to put anyone to death.'31 Therefore, Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your own law.” Then the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to execute anyone.”
This was to fulfil the words Jesus had spoken indicating the way he was going to die.32 This was so that the word of Jesus would be fulfilled, which he spoke signifying what kind of death he would die.
So Pilate went back into the Praetorium and cal ed Jesus to him and asked him, 'Are you the king ofthe Jews?'33 Then Pilate entered the praetorium again, and he called Jesus and said to him, “You are the king of the Jews?”
Jesus replied, 'Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others said it to you about me?'34 Jesus responded, “Are you saying this of yourself, or have others spoken to you about me?”
Pilate answered, 'Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you overto me: what have you done?'35 Pilate responded: “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the high priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?”
Jesus replied, 'Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men wouldhave fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. As it is, my kingdom does not belong here.'36 Jesus responded: “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my ministers would certainly strive so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not now from here.”
Pilate said, 'So, then you are a king?' Jesus answered, 'It is you who say that I am a king. I was bornfor this, I came into the world for this, to bear witness to the truth; and al who are on the side of truth listen to myvoice.'37 And so Pilate said to him, “You are a king, then?” Jesus answered, “You are saying that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world: so that I may offer testimony to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.”
'Truth?' said Pilate. 'What is that?' And so saying he went out again to the Jews and said, 'I find nocase against him.38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and he said to them, “I find no case against him.
But according to a custom of yours I should release one prisoner at the Passover; would you like me,then, to release for you the king of the Jews?'39 But you have a custom, that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Therefore, do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”
At this they shouted, 'Not this man,' they said, 'but Barabbas.' Barabbas was a bandit.40 Then they all cried out repeatedly, saying: “Not this one, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber.
