1 After he had said al this, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron valley where there was agarden into which he went with his disciples.	1 - Gesù, dopo aver dette queste cose, uscì coi suoi discepoli oltre il torrente Cedron, dove vi era un orto, nel quale entrò egli e i suoi discepoli.
2 Judas the traitor knew the place also, since Jesus had often met his disciples there,	2 Giuda, che lo tradiva, conosceva anch'egli quel luogo, perchè Gesù vi s'era riunito di frequente coi suoi discepoli.
3 so Judas brought the cohort to this place together with guards sent by the chief priests and thePharisees, al with lanterns and torches and weapons.	3 Giuda pertanto, presa la coorte e, dai capi dei sacerdoti e dai Farisei, alcune guardie, andò colà con lanterne, torce ed armi.
4 Knowing everything that was to happen to him, Jesus came forward and said, 'Who are you lookingfor?'	4 Gesù che sapeva tutto quello che stava per accadere, si fece avanti e domandò: «Chi cercate?».
5 They answered, 'Jesus the Nazarene.' He said, 'I am he.' Now Judas the traitor was standing amongthem.	5 Gli risposero: «Gesù il Nazareno». Gesù disse loro: «Sono io». Giuda che lo tradiva era là con essi.
6 When Jesus said to them, 'I am he,' they moved back and fell on the ground.	6 Appena Gesù ebbe detto loro: «Son io», essi dettero all'indietro e caddero in terra.
7 He asked them a second time, 'Who are you looking for?' They said, 'Jesus the Nazarene.'	7 Egli domandò loro di nuovo: «Chi cercate?». Quelli risposero: «Gesù il Nazareno».
8 Jesus replied, 'I have told you that I am he. If I am the one you are looking for, let these others go.'	8 Gesù riprese: «Vi ho detto che sono io; se dunque cercate di me, lasciate che questi se ne vadano».
9 This was to fulfil the words he had spoken, 'Not one of those you gave me have I lost.'	9 Disse ciò perchè s'adempisse la parola detta da lui: «Non ho perduto nessuno di quelli che m'hai dato».
10 Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear.The servant's name was Malchus.	10 Allora Simon Pietro, che aveva una spada, la sfoderò e ferì il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli staccò l'orecchio destro. Il servo si chiamava Malco.
11 Jesus said to Peter, 'Put your sword back in its scabbard; am I not to drink the cup that the Fatherhas given me?'	11 Ma Gesù disse a Pietro: «Rimetti la spada nel fodero. Non berrò io il calice che il Padre mi ha dato?».
12 The cohort and its tribune and the Jewish guards seized Jesus and bound him.	12 Quindi la coorte, il tribuno e le guardie dei Giudei afferrarono Gesù, lo legarono
13 They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priestthat year.	13 e lo condussero prima da Anna, perchè era suocero di Caifa, che era il sommo sacerdote di quell'anno.
14 It was Caiaphas who had counsel ed the Jews, 'It is better for one man to die for the people.'	14 Caifa era quello che aveva dato questo consiglio ai Giudei: «Val meglio che un solo uomo muoia per il popolo».
15 Simon Peter, with another disciple, fol owed Jesus. This disciple, who was known to the high priest,went with Jesus into the high priest's palace,	15 Simon Pietro ed un altro discepolo seguivano Gesù, e siccome l'altro discepolo era conosciuto dal pontefice, entrò con Gesù nell'atrio del pontefice,
16 but Peter stayed outside the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out,spoke to the door-keeper and brought Peter in.	16 mentre Pietro era rimasto fuori vicino alla porta. Allora l'altro discepolo, quello noto al sommo sacerdote, uscì e, parlato con la portinaia, fece entrare Pietro.
17 The girl on duty at the door said to Peter, 'Aren't you another of that man's disciples?' He answered, 'Iam not.'	17 La serva portinaia disse a Pietro: «Sei forse anche tu dei discepoli di quest'uomo?». Egli rispose: «Non sono!».
18 Now it was cold, and the servants and guards had lit a charcoal fire and were standing there warming themselves; so Peter stood there too, warming himself with the others.	18 I servi e le guardie stavano presso un braciere, perchè faceva freddo e si scaldavano; e anche Pietro era con essi e si scaldava.
19 The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.	19 Il pontefice interrogò adunque Gesù intorno ai suoi discepoli e al suo insegnamento.
20 Jesus answered, 'I have spoken openly for al the world to hear; I have always taught in thesynagogue and in the Temple where al the Jews meet together; I have said nothing in secret.	20 Gesù rispose: «Io ho parlato apertamente al mondo, ho sempre insegnato nella sinagoga e nel tempio, dove s'adunano tutti i Giudei, e non ho detto nulla in segreto.
21 Why ask me? Ask my hearers what I taught; they know what I said.'	21 Perchè interroghi me? Domanda a quelli che mi hanno udito parlare; ecco, costoro sanno quel che io ho detto».
22 At these words, one of the guards standing by gave Jesus a slap in the face, saying, 'Is that the wayyou answer the high priest?'	22 Allorchè Gesù ebbe detto queste cose, una delle guardie presenti dette a Gesù uno schiaffo e disse: «Così rispondi al pontefice?».
23 Jesus replied, 'If there is some offence in what I said, point it out; but if not, why do you strike me?'	23 Gesù gli replicò: «Se ho parlato male, mostra che c'è di male; se invece bene, perchè mi percuoti?».
24 Then Annas sent him, bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.	24 Allora Anna lo mandò legato a Caifa, il pontefice.
25 As Simon Peter stood there warming himself, someone said to him, 'Aren't you another of hisdisciples?' He denied it saying, 'I am not.'	25 Intanto Simon Pietro stava a scaldarsi; e gli domandarono: «Non sei dei suoi discepoli anche tu?». Egli negò dicendo: «Non sono».
26 One of the high priest's servants, a relation of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, 'Didn't I seeyou in the garden with him?'	26 Uno dei servi del sommo sacerdote, parente di quello a cui Pietro aveva mozzato l'orecchio, gli disse: «Non ti ho io visto nell'orto con lui?».
27 Again Peter denied it; and at once a cock crowed.	27 Pietro di nuovo negò, e in quel momento un gallo cantò.
28 They then led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was now morning. They did notgo into the Praetorium themselves to avoid becoming defiled and unable to eat the Passover.	28 Poscia condussero Gesù dalla casa di Caifa al Pretorio. Era mattina. Essi però non entrarono nel Pretorio per non contaminarsi e mangiare la Pasqua.
29 So Pilate came outside to them and said, 'What charge do you bring against this man?' They replied,	29 Pilato dunque uscì fuori verso di loro e disse: «Che accusa portate contro quest'uomo?».
30 'If he were not a criminal, we should not have handed him over to you.'	30 Essi risposero e gli dissero: «Se costui non fosse un malfattore, non te lo avremmo consegnato».
31 Pilate said, 'Take him yourselves, and try him by your own Law.' The Jews answered, 'We are notal owed to put anyone to death.'	31 Allora Pilato rispose loro: «Pigliatelo voi stessi e giudicatelo secondo la vostra legge». Ma i Giudei gli replicarono: «Noi non possiamo dar la morte a nessuno».
32 This was to fulfil the words Jesus had spoken indicating the way he was going to die.	32 Affinchè fossero adempiute le parole dette da Gesù, per significare di qual morte doveva morire.
33 So Pilate went back into the Praetorium and cal ed Jesus to him and asked him, 'Are you the king ofthe Jews?'	33 Pilato dunque, rientrato nel Pretorio, chiamò Gesù e gli chiese: «Sei tu il re dei Giudei?».
34 Jesus replied, 'Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others said it to you about me?'	34 Gesù rispose: «Dici ciò da te stesso, o altri te l'ha detto di me?».
35 Pilate answered, 'Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you overto me: what have you done?'	35 Pilato replicò: «Sono io forse Giudeo? La tua nazione e i pontefici t'hanno consegnato a me; che hai fatto?».
36 Jesus replied, 'Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men wouldhave fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. As it is, my kingdom does not belong here.'	36 E Gesù: «Il mio regno non è di questo mondo; se il mio regno fosse di questo mondo, i miei servi combatterebbero perchè non fossi consegnato ai Giudei; ma ora il mio regno non è di qua».
37 Pilate said, 'So, then you are a king?' Jesus answered, 'It is you who say that I am a king. I was bornfor this, I came into the world for this, to bear witness to the truth; and al who are on the side of truth listen to myvoice.'	37 Allora Pilato gli domandò: «Sei tu dunque re?». Gesù rispose: «Tu lo dici che io sono re; io son nato e venuto al mondo per rendere testimonianza alla verità; chiunque è dalla verità, ascolta la mia voce».
38 'Truth?' said Pilate. 'What is that?' And so saying he went out again to the Jews and said, 'I find nocase against him.	38 Pilato gli disse: «Che cos'è la verità?». Detto questo, uscì di nuovo verso i Giudei e disse loro: «Io non trovo in lui nessuna colpa.
39 But according to a custom of yours I should release one prisoner at the Passover; would you like me,then, to release for you the king of the Jews?'	39 Ma voi avete l'usanza, che io vi rilasci uno in occasione della Pasqua. Volete dunque che vi rilasci il re dei Giudei?».
40 At this they shouted, 'Not this man,' they said, 'but Barabbas.' Barabbas was a bandit.	40 Ma essi novamente gridarono tutti dicendo: «Non costui, ma Barabba!». Barabba poi era un ladrone.
