NEW JERUSALEMKING JAMES BIBLE
After he had said al this, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron valley where there was agarden into which he went with his disciples.1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.
Judas the traitor knew the place also, since Jesus had often met his disciples there,2 And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.
so Judas brought the cohort to this place together with guards sent by the chief priests and thePharisees, al with lanterns and torches and weapons.3 Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.
Knowing everything that was to happen to him, Jesus came forward and said, 'Who are you lookingfor?'4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
They answered, 'Jesus the Nazarene.' He said, 'I am he.' Now Judas the traitor was standing amongthem.5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
When Jesus said to them, 'I am he,' they moved back and fell on the ground.6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.
He asked them a second time, 'Who are you looking for?' They said, 'Jesus the Nazarene.'7 Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.
Jesus replied, 'I have told you that I am he. If I am the one you are looking for, let these others go.'8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:
This was to fulfil the words he had spoken, 'Not one of those you gave me have I lost.'9 That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.
Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear.The servant's name was Malchus.10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
Jesus said to Peter, 'Put your sword back in its scabbard; am I not to drink the cup that the Fatherhas given me?'11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
The cohort and its tribune and the Jewish guards seized Jesus and bound him.12 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,
They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priestthat year.13 And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.
It was Caiaphas who had counsel ed the Jews, 'It is better for one man to die for the people.'14 Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
Simon Peter, with another disciple, fol owed Jesus. This disciple, who was known to the high priest, went with Jesus into the high priest's palace,15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.
but Peter stayed outside the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the door-keeper and brought Peter in.16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
The girl on duty at the door said to Peter, 'Aren't you another of that man's disciples?' He answered, 'Iam not.'17 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.
Now it was cold, and the servants and guards had lit a charcoal fire and were standing there warming themselves; so Peter stood there too, warming himself with the others.18 And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.
The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.19 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.
Jesus answered, 'I have spoken openly for al the world to hear; I have always taught in thesynagogue and in the Temple where al the Jews meet together; I have said nothing in secret.20 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.
Why ask me? Ask my hearers what I taught; they know what I said.'21 Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.
At these words, one of the guards standing by gave Jesus a slap in the face, saying, 'Is that the wayyou answer the high priest?'22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?
Jesus replied, 'If there is some offence in what I said, point it out; but if not, why do you strike me?'23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?
Then Annas sent him, bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.24 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
As Simon Peter stood there warming himself, someone said to him, 'Aren't you another of hisdisciples?' He denied it saying, 'I am not.'25 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.
One of the high priest's servants, a relation of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, 'Didn't I seeyou in the garden with him?'26 One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
Again Peter denied it; and at once a cock crowed.27 Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.
They then led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was now morning. They did notgo into the Praetorium themselves to avoid becoming defiled and unable to eat the Passover.28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.
So Pilate came outside to them and said, 'What charge do you bring against this man?' They replied,29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?
'If he were not a criminal, we should not have handed him over to you.'30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.
Pilate said, 'Take him yourselves, and try him by your own Law.' The Jews answered, 'We are notal owed to put anyone to death.'31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
This was to fulfil the words Jesus had spoken indicating the way he was going to die.32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.
So Pilate went back into the Praetorium and cal ed Jesus to him and asked him, 'Are you the king ofthe Jews?'33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
Jesus replied, 'Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others said it to you about me?'34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?
Pilate answered, 'Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you overto me: what have you done?'35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
Jesus replied, 'Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men wouldhave fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. As it is, my kingdom does not belong here.'36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
Pilate said, 'So, then you are a king?' Jesus answered, 'It is you who say that I am a king. I was bornfor this, I came into the world for this, to bear witness to the truth; and al who are on the side of truth listen to myvoice.'37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
'Truth?' said Pilate. 'What is that?' And so saying he went out again to the Jews and said, 'I find nocase against him.38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
But according to a custom of yours I should release one prisoner at the Passover; would you like me,then, to release for you the king of the Jews?'39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
At this they shouted, 'Not this man,' they said, 'but Barabbas.' Barabbas was a bandit.40 Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
