1 It happened that one Sabbath he was walking through the cornfields, and his disciples were pickingears of corn, rubbing them in their hands and eating them.1 Factum est autem in sabbato, cum transiret per sata, et velle bantdiscipuli eius spicas et manducabant confricantes manibus.
2 Some of the Pharisees said, 'Why are you doing something that is forbidden on the Sabbath day?'2 Quidam autempharisaeorum dixerunt: “ Quid facitis, quod non licet in sabbatis? ”.
3 Jesus answered them, 'So you have not read what David did when he and his fol owers were hungry-3 Etrespondens Iesus ad eos dixit: “ Nec hoc legistis, quod fecit David, cumesurisset ipse et qui cum eo erant?
4 how he went into the house of God and took the loaves of the offering and ate them and gave them tohis fol owers, loaves which the priests alone are al owed to eat?'4 Quomodo intravit in domum Dei et panespropositionis sumpsit et manducavit et dedit his, qui cum ipso erant, quos nonlicet manducare nisi tantum sacerdotibus? ”.
5 And he said to them, 'The Son of man is master of the Sabbath.'5 Et dicebat illis: “ Dominusest sabbati Filius hominis ”.
6 Now on another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and began to teach, and a man was present, andhis right hand was withered.6 Factum est autem in alio sabbato, ut intraret in synagogam et doceret; et eratibi homo, et manus eius dextra erat arida.
7 The scribes and the Pharisees were watching him to see if he would cure somebody on the Sabbath,hoping to find something to charge him with.7 Observabant autem illum scribae etpharisaei, si sabbato curaret, ut invenirent accusare illum.
8 But he knew their thoughts; and he said to the man with the withered hand, 'Get up and stand out in themiddle!' And he came forward and stood there.8 Ipse vero sciebatcogitationes eorum et ait homini, qui habebat manum aridam: “ Surge et sta inmedium ”. Et surgens stetit.
9 Then Jesus said to them, 'I put it to you: is it permitted on the Sabbath to do good, or to do evil; to savelife, or to destroy it?'9 Ait autem ad illos Iesus: “ Interrogo vos, silicet sabbato bene facere an male; animam salvam facere an perdere? ”.
10 Then he looked round at them al and said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' He did so, and his handwas restored.10 Etcircumspectis omnibus illis, dixit illi: “ Extende manum tuam ”. Et fecit;et restituta est manus eius.
11 But they were furious and began to discuss the best way of dealing with Jesus.11 Ipsi autem repleti sunt insipientia etcolloquebantur ad invicem quidnam facerent Iesu.
12 Now it happened in those days that he went onto the mountain to pray; and he spent the whole night inprayer to God.12 Factum est autem in illis diebus, exiit in montem orare et erat pernoctans inoratione Dei.
13 When day came he summoned his disciples and picked out twelve of them; he cal ed them 'apostles':13 Et cum dies factus esset, vocavit discipulos suos et elegitDuodecim ex ipsis, quos et apostolos nominavit:
14 Simon whom he called Peter, and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,14 Simonem, quem et cognominavitPetrum, et Andream fratrem eius et Iacobum et Ioannem et Philippum etBartholomaeum
15 Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon cal ed the Zealot,15 et Matthaeum et Thomam et Iacobum Alphaei et Simonem, quivocatur Zelotes,
16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor.16 et Iudam Iacobi et Iudam Iscarioth, qui fuit proditor.
17 He then came down with them and stopped at a piece of level ground where there was a largegathering of his disciples, with a great crowd of people from al parts of Judaea and Jerusalem and the coastalregion of Tyre and Sidon17 Et descendens cum illis stetit in loco campestri, et turba multa discipulorumeius, et multitudo copiosa plebis ab omni Iudaea et Ierusalem et maritima Tyriet Sidonis,
18 who had come to hear him and to be cured of their diseases. People tormented by unclean spirits werealso cured,18 qui venerunt, ut audirent eum et sanarentur a languoribus suis;et, qui vexabantur a spiritibus immundis, curabantur.
19 and everyone in the crowd was trying to touch him because power came out of him that cured them al .19 Et omnis turbaquaerebant eum tangere, quia virtus de illo exibat et sanabat omnes.
20 Then fixing his eyes on his disciples he said: How blessed are you who are poor: the kingdom of Godis yours.20 Et ipse, elevatis oculis suis in discipulos suos, dicebat:
“ Beati pauperes, quia vestrum est regnum Dei.
21 Blessed are you who are hungry now: you shal have your fil . Blessed are you who are weeping now:you shall laugh.21 Beati, qui nunc esuritis, quia saturabimini.
Beati, qui nunc fletis, quia ridebitis.
22 'Blessed are you when people hate you, drive you out, abuse you, denounce your name as criminal,on account of the Son of man.22 Beati eritis, cum vos oderint homines et cum separaverint vos etexprobraverint et eiecerint nomen vestrum tamquam malum propter Filium hominis.
23 Rejoice when that day comes and dance for joy, look!-your reward wil be great in heaven. This wasthe way their ancestors treated the prophets.23 Gaudete in illa die et exsultate, ecce enim merces vestra multa in caelo;secundum haec enim faciebant prophetis patres eorum.
24 But alas for you who are rich: you are having your consolation now.24 Verumtamen vae vobis divitibus, quia habetis consolationem vestram!
25 Alas for you who have plenty to eat now: you shal go hungry. Alas for you who are laughing now: youshall mourn and weep.25 Vae vobis, qui saturati estis nunc, quia esurietis!
Vae vobis, qui ridetis nunc, quia lugebitis et flebitis!
26 'Alas for you when everyone speaks wel of you! This was the way their ancestors treated the falseprophets.26 Vae, cum bene vobis dixerint omnes homines! Secundum haec enim faciebantpseudoprophetis patres eorum.
27 'But I say this to you who are listening: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,27 Sed vobis dico, qui auditis: Diligite inimicos vestros, bene facite his, quivos oderunt;
28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who treat you badly.28 benedicite male dicentibus vobis, orate pro calumniantibus vos.
29 To anyone who slaps you on one cheek, present the other cheek as well; to anyone who takes yourcloak from you, do not refuse your tunic.29 Ei, qui te percutit in maxillam, praebe et alteram; et ab eo, qui aufert tibivestimentum, etiam tunicam noli prohibere.
30 Give to everyone who asks you, and do not ask for your property back from someone who takes it.30 Omni petenti te tribue; et ab eo,qui aufert, quae tua sunt, ne repetas.
31 Treat others as you would like people to treat you.31 Et prout vultis, ut faciant vobishomines, facite illis similiter.
32 If you love those who love you, what credit can you expect? Even sinners love those who love them.32 Et si diligitis eos, qui vos diligunt, quaevobis est gratia? Nam et peccatores diligentes se diligunt.
33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit can you expect? For even sinners do thatmuch.33 Et si benefeceritis his, qui vobis bene faciunt, quae vobis est gratia? Si quidem etpeccatores idem faciunt.
34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to get money back, what credit can you expect? Evensinners lend to sinners to get back the same amount.34 Et si mutuum dederitis his, a quibus speratisrecipere, quae vobis gratia est? Nam et peccatores peccatoribus fenerantur, utrecipiant aequalia.
35 Instead, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend without any hope of return. You wil have agreat reward, and you wil be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.35 Verumtamen diligite inimicos vestros et bene facite et mutuum date nihildesperantes; et erit merces vestra multa, et eritis filii Altissimi, quia ipsebenignus est super ingratos et malos.
36 'Be compassionate just as your Father is compassionate.36 Estote misericordes, sicut et Patervester misericors est.
37 Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you wil not be condemned; forgive,and you wil be forgiven.37 Et nolite iudicare et non iudicabimini; et nolitecondemnare et non condemnabimini. Dimittite et dimittemini;
38 Give, and there wil be gifts for you: a ful measure, pressed down, shaken together, and overflowing,wil be poured into your lap; because the standard you use will be the standard used for you.'38 date, et dabiturvobis: mensuram bonam, confertam, coagitatam, supereffluentem dabunt in sinumvestrum; eadem quippe mensura, qua mensi fueritis, remetietur vobis ”.
39 He also told them a parable, 'Can one blind person guide another? Surely both wil fal into a pit?39 Dixit autem illis et similitudinem: “ Numquid potest caecus caecum ducere?Nonne ambo in foveam cadent?
40 Disciple is not superior to teacher; but ful y trained disciple wil be like teacher.40 Non est discipulus super magistrum; perfectus autem omnis erit sicut magistereius.
41 Why do you observe the splinter in your brother's eye and never notice the great log in your own?41 Quid autem vides festucam in oculo fratris tui, trabem autem, quae in oculotuo est, non consideras?
42 How can you say to your brother, "Brother, let me take out that splinter in your eye," when you cannotsee the great log in your own? Hypocrite! Take the log out of your own eye first, and then you wil see clearlyenough to take out the splinter in your brother's eye.42 Quomodo potes dicere fratri tuo: “Frater, sineeiciam festucam, quae est in oculo tuo”, ipse in oculo tuo trabem non videns?Hypocrita, eice primum trabem de oculo tuo et tunc perspicies, ut educasfestucam, quae est in oculo fratris tui.
43 'There is no sound tree that produces rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree that produces sound fruit.43 Non est enim arbor bona faciens fructum malum, neque iterum arbor malafaciens fructum bonum.
44 Every tree can be told by its own fruit: people do not pick figs from thorns, nor gather grapes frombrambles.44 Unaquaeque enim arbor de fructu suo cognoscitur; nequeenim de spinis colligunt ficus, neque de rubo vindemiant uvam.
45 Good people draw what is good from the store of goodness in their hearts; bad people draw what isbad from the store of badness. For the words of the mouth flow out of what fil s the heart.45 Bonus homo debono thesauro cordis profert bonum, et malus homo de malo profert malum: exabundantia enim cordis os eius loquitur.
46 'Why do you call me, "Lord, Lord" and not do what I say?46 Quid autem vocatis me: “Domine, Domine”, et non facitis, quae dico?
47 'Everyone who comes to me and listens to my words and acts on them -- I wil show you what such aperson is like.47 Omnis, qui venit ad me et audit sermones meos et facit eos, ostendam vobis cuisimilis sit:
48 Such a person is like the man who, when he built a house, dug, and dug deep, and laid thefoundations on rock; when the river was in flood it bore down on that house but could not shake it, it was so welbuilt.48 similis est homini aedificanti domum, qui fodit in altum etposuit fundamentum supra petram; inundatione autem facta, illisum est flumendomui illi et non potuit eam movere; bene enim aedificata erat.
49 But someone who listens and does nothing is like the man who built a house on soil, with nofoundations; as soon as the river bore down on it, it col apsed; and what a ruin that house became!'49 Qui autemaudivit et non fecit, similis est homini aedificanti domum suam supra terramsine fundamento; in quam illisus est fluvius, et continuo cecidit, et facta estruina domus illius magna ”.
