Fil ed with the Holy Spirit, Jesus left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert,1 And Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan. And he was urged by the Spirit into the wilderness
for forty days being put to the test by the devil. During that time he ate nothing and at the end he washungry.2 for forty days, and he was tested by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days. And when they were completed, he was hungry.
Then the devil said to him, 'If you are Son of God, tel this stone to turn into a loaf.'3 Then the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, speak to this stone, so that it may be made into bread.”
But Jesus replied, 'Scripture says: Human beings live not on bread alone.'4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’ ”
Then leading him to a height, the devil showed him in a moment of time al the kingdoms of the world5 And the devil led him onto a high mountain, and he showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time,
and said to him, 'I wil give you al this power and their splendour, for it has been handed over to me, forme to give it to anyone I choose.6 and he said to him: “To you, I will give all this power, and its glory. For they have been handed over to me, and I give them to whomever I wish.
Do homage, then, to me, and it shal al be yours.'7 Therefore, if you will worship before me, all will be yours.”
But Jesus answered him, 'Scripture says: You must do homage to the Lord your God, him alone youmust serve.'8 And in response, Jesus said to him: “It is written: ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him alone.’ ”
Then he led him to Jerusalem and set him on the parapet of the Temple. 'If you are Son of God,' he saidto him, 'throw yourself down from here,9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and he set him on the parapet of the temple, and he said to him: “If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down from here.
for scripture says: He has given his angels orders about you, to guard you, and again:10 For it is written that he has given his Angels charge over you, so that they may guard you,
They wil carry you in their arms in case you trip over a stone.'11 and so that they may take you into their hands, lest perhaps you may hurt your foot against a stone.”
But Jesus answered him, 'Scripture says: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'12 And in response, Jesus said to him, “It is said: ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”
Having exhausted every way of putting him to the test, the devil left him, until the opportune moment.13 And when all the temptation was completed, the devil withdrew from him, until a time.
Jesus, with the power of the Spirit in him, returned to Galilee; and his reputation spread throughout thecountryside.14 And Jesus returned, in the power of the Spirit, into Galilee. And his fame spread throughout the entire region.
He taught in their synagogues and everyone glorified him.15 And he taught in their synagogues, and he was magnified by everyone.
He came to Nazara, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath dayas he usually did. He stood up to read,16 And he went to Nazareth, where he had been raised. And he entered into the synagogue, according to his custom, on the Sabbath day. And he rose up to read.
and they handed him the scrol of the prophet Isaiah. Unrol ing the scrol he found the place where it iswritten:17 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. And as he unrolled the book, he found the place where it was written:
The spirit of the Lord is on me, for he has anointed me to bring the good news to the afflicted. He hassent me to proclaim liberty to captives, sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; because of this, he has anointed me. He has sent me to evangelize the poor, to heal the contrite of heart,
to proclaim a year of favour from the Lord.19 to preach forgiveness to captives and sight to the blind, to release the broken into forgiveness, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of retribution.”
He then rol ed up the scrol , gave it back to the assistant and sat down. And all eyes in the synagogue were fixed on him.20 And when he had rolled up the book, he returned it to the minister, and he sat down. And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.
Then he began to speak to them, 'This text is being fulfilled today even while you are listening.'21 Then he began to say to them, “On this day, this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
And he won the approval of all, and they were astonished by the gracious words that came from hislips. They said, 'This is Joseph's son, surely?'22 And everyone gave testimony to him. And they wondered at the words of grace that proceeded from his mouth. And they said, “Is this not the son of Joseph?”
But he replied, 'No doubt you will quote me the saying, "Physician, heal yourself," and tel me, "We have heard al that happened in Capernaum, do the same here in your own country." '23 And he said to them: “Certainly, you will recite to me this saying, ‘Physician, heal yourself.’ The many great things that we have heard were done in Capernaum, do here also in your own country.”
And he went on, 'In truth I tel you, no prophet is ever accepted in his own country.24 Then he said: “Amen I say to you, that no prophet is accepted in his own country.
'There were many widows in Israel, I can assure you, in Elijah's day, when heaven remained shut forthree years and six months and a great famine raged throughout the land,25 In truth, I say to you, there were many widows in the days of Elijah in Israel, when the heavens were closed for three years and six months, when a great famine had occurred throughout the entire land.
but Elijah was not sent to any one of these: he was sent to a widow at Zarephath, a town in Sidonia.26 And to none of these was Elijah sent, except to Zarephath of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
And in the prophet Elisha's time there were many suffering from virulent skin-diseases in Israel, butnone of these was cured -- only Naaman the Syrian.'27 And there were many lepers in Israel under the prophet Elisha. And none of these was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian.”
When they heard this everyone in the synagogue was enraged.28 And all those in the synagogue, upon hearing these things, were filled with anger.
They sprang to their feet and hustled him out of the town; and they took him up to the brow of the hilltheir town was built on, intending to throw him off the cliff,29 And they rose up and drove him beyond the city. And they brought him all the way to the edge of the mount, upon which their city had been built, so that they might thrown him down violently.
but he passed straight through the crowd and walked away.30 But passing through their midst, he went away.
He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath.31 And he descended to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And there he taught them on the Sabbaths.
And his teaching made a deep impression on them because his word carried authority.32 And they were astonished at his doctrine, for his word was spoken with authority.
In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean devil, and he shouted at thetop of his voice,33 And in the synagogue, there was a man who had an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,
'Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who youare: the Holy One of God.'34 saying: “Let us alone. What are we to you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know you who you are: the Holy One of God.”
But Jesus rebuked it, saying, 'Be quiet! Come out of him!' And the devil, throwing the man into themiddle, went out of him without hurting him at all.35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and depart from him.” And when the demon had thrown him into their midst, he departed from him, and he no longer harmed him.
Astonishment seized them and they were al saying to one another, 'What is it in his words? He givesorders to unclean spirits with authority and power and they come out.'36 And fear fell over them all. And they discussed this among themselves, saying: “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they depart.”
And the news of him travel ed al through the surrounding countryside.37 And his fame spread to every place in the region.
Leaving the synagogue he went to Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was in the grip of ahigh fever and they asked him to do something for her.38 Then Jesus, rising up from the synagogue, entered into the house of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in the grip of a severe fever. And they petitioned him on her behalf.
Standing over her he rebuked the fever and it left her. And she immediately got up and began to servethem.39 And standing over her, he commanded the fever, and it left her. And promptly rising up, she ministered to them.
At sunset al those who had friends suffering from diseases of one kind or another brought them tohim, and laying his hands on each he cured them.40 Then, when the sun had set, all those who had anyone afflicted with various diseases brought them to him. Then, laying his hands on each one of them, he cured them.
Devils too came out of many people, shouting, 'You are the Son of God.' But he warned them andwould not al ow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ.41 Now demons departed from many of them, crying out and saying, “You are the son of God.” And rebuking them, he would not permit them to speak. For they knew him to be the Christ.
When daylight came he left the house and made his way to a lonely place. The crowds went to look forhim, and when they had caught up with him they wanted to prevent him leaving them,42 Then, when it was daytime, going out, he went to a deserted place. And the crowds sought him, and they went all the way to him. And they detained him, so that he would not depart from them.
but he answered, 'I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns too, because that is what I was sent to do.'43 And he said to them, “I must also preach the kingdom of God to other cities, because it was for this reason that I was sent.”
And he continued his proclamation in the synagogues of Judaea.44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
