Fil ed with the Holy Spirit, Jesus left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert,1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the desert,
for forty days being put to the test by the devil. During that time he ate nothing and at the end he washungry.2 For the space of forty days; and was tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days; and when they were ended, he was hungry.
Then the devil said to him, 'If you are Son of God, tel this stone to turn into a loaf.'3 And the devil said to him: If thou be the Son of God, say to this stone that it be made bread.
But Jesus replied, 'Scripture says: Human beings live not on bread alone.'4 And Jesus answered him: It is written, that Man liveth not by bread alone, but by every word of God.
Then leading him to a height, the devil showed him in a moment of time al the kingdoms of the world5 And the devil led him into a high mountain, and shewed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time;
and said to him, 'I wil give you al this power and their splendour, for it has been handed over to me, forme to give it to anyone I choose.6 And he said to him: To thee will I give all this power, and the glory of them; for to me they are delivered, and to whom I will, I give them.
Do homage, then, to me, and it shal al be yours.'7 If thou therefore wilt adore before me, all shall be thine.
But Jesus answered him, 'Scripture says: You must do homage to the Lord your God, him alone youmust serve.'8 And Jesus answering said to him: It is written: Thou shalt adore the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
Then he led him to Jerusalem and set him on the parapet of the Temple. 'If you are Son of God,' he saidto him, 'throw yourself down from here,9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and he said to him: If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself from hence.
for scripture says: He has given his angels orders about you, to guard you, and again:10 For it is written, that He hath given his angels charge over thee, that they keep thee.
They wil carry you in their arms in case you trip over a stone.'11 And that in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest perhaps thou dash thy foot against a stone.
But Jesus answered him, 'Scripture says: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'12 And Jesus answering, said to him: It is said: Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
Having exhausted every way of putting him to the test, the devil left him, until the opportune moment.13 And all the temptation being ended, the devil departed from him for a time.
Jesus, with the power of the Spirit in him, returned to Galilee; and his reputation spread throughout thecountryside.14 And Jesus returned in the power of the spirit, into Galilee, and the fame of him went out through the whole country.
He taught in their synagogues and everyone glorified him.15 And he taught in their synagogues, and was magnified by all.
He came to Nazara, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath dayas he usually did. He stood up to read,16 And he came to Nazareth, where he was brought up: and he went into the synagogue, according to his custom, on the sabbath day; and he rose up to read.
and they handed him the scrol of the prophet Isaiah. Unrol ing the scrol he found the place where it iswritten:17 And the book of Isaias the prophet was delivered unto him. And as he unfolded the book, he found the place where it was written:
The spirit of the Lord is on me, for he has anointed me to bring the good news to the afflicted. He hassent me to proclaim liberty to captives, sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. Wherefore he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the contrite of heart,
to proclaim a year of favour from the Lord.19 To preach deliverance to the captives, and sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of reward.
He then rol ed up the scrol , gave it back to the assistant and sat down. And all eyes in the synagogue were fixed on him.20 And when he had folded the book, he restored it to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.
Then he began to speak to them, 'This text is being fulfilled today even while you are listening.'21 And he began to say to them: This day is fulfilled this scripture in your ears.
And he won the approval of all, and they were astonished by the gracious words that came from hislips. They said, 'This is Joseph's son, surely?'22 And all gave testimony to him: and they wondered at the words of grace that proceeded from his mouth, and they said: Is not this the son of Joseph?
But he replied, 'No doubt you will quote me the saying, "Physician, heal yourself," and tel me, "We have heard al that happened in Capernaum, do the same here in your own country." '23 And he said to them: Doubtless you will say to me this similitude: Physician, heal thyself: as great things as we have heard done in Capharnaum, do also here in thy own country.
And he went on, 'In truth I tel you, no prophet is ever accepted in his own country.24 And he said: Amen I say to you, that no prophet is accepted in his own country.
'There were many widows in Israel, I can assure you, in Elijah's day, when heaven remained shut forthree years and six months and a great famine raged throughout the land,25 In truth I say to you, there were many widows in the days of Elias in Israel, when heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there was a great famine throughout all the earth.
but Elijah was not sent to any one of these: he was sent to a widow at Zarephath, a town in Sidonia.26 And to none of them was Elias sent, but to Sarepta of Sidon, to a widow woman.
And in the prophet Elisha's time there were many suffering from virulent skin-diseases in Israel, butnone of these was cured -- only Naaman the Syrian.'27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet: and none of them was cleansed but Naaman the Syrian.
When they heard this everyone in the synagogue was enraged.28 And all they in the synagogue, hearing these things, were filled with anger.
They sprang to their feet and hustled him out of the town; and they took him up to the brow of the hilltheir town was built on, intending to throw him off the cliff,29 And they rose up and thrust him out of the city; and they brought him to the brow of the hill, whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.
but he passed straight through the crowd and walked away.30 But he passing through the midst of them, went his way.
He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath.31 And he went down into Capharnaum, a city of Galilee, and there he taught them on the sabbath days.
And his teaching made a deep impression on them because his word carried authority.32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his speech was with power.
In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean devil, and he shouted at thetop of his voice,33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had an unclean devil, and he cried out with a loud voice,
'Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who youare: the Holy One of God.'34 Saying: Let us alone, what have we to do with thee, Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the holy one of God.
But Jesus rebuked it, saying, 'Be quiet! Come out of him!' And the devil, throwing the man into themiddle, went out of him without hurting him at all.35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying: Hold thy peace, and go out of him. And when the devil had thrown him into the midst, he went out of him, and hurt him not at all.
Astonishment seized them and they were al saying to one another, 'What is it in his words? He givesorders to unclean spirits with authority and power and they come out.'36 And there came fear upon all, and they talked among themselves, saying: What word is this, for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they go out?
And the news of him travel ed al through the surrounding countryside.37 And the fame of him was published into every place of the country.
Leaving the synagogue he went to Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was in the grip of ahigh fever and they asked him to do something for her.38 And Jesus rising up out of the synagogue, went into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever, and they besought him for her.
Standing over her he rebuked the fever and it left her. And she immediately got up and began to servethem.39 And standing over her, he commanded the fever, and it left her. And immediately rising, she ministered to them.
At sunset al those who had friends suffering from diseases of one kind or another brought them tohim, and laying his hands on each he cured them.40 And when the sun was down, all they that had any sick with divers diseases, brought them to him. But he laying his hands on every one of them, healed them.
Devils too came out of many people, shouting, 'You are the Son of God.' But he warned them andwould not al ow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ.41 And devils went out from many, crying out and saying: Thou art the Son of God. And rebuking them he suffered them not to speak, for they knew that he was Christ.
When daylight came he left the house and made his way to a lonely place. The crowds went to look forhim, and when they had caught up with him they wanted to prevent him leaving them,42 And when it was day, going out he went into a desert place, and the multitudes sought him, and came unto him: and they stayed him that he should not depart from them.
but he answered, 'I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns too, because that is what I was sent to do.'43 To whom he said: To other cities also I must preach the kingdom of God: for therefore am I sent.
And he continued his proclamation in the synagogues of Judaea.44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
