NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
He also said to his disciples, 'There was a rich man and he had a steward who was denounced to himfor being wasteful with his property.1 And he said also to his disciples: There was a certain rich man who had a steward: and the same was accused unto him, that he had wasted his goods.
He called for the man and said, "What is this I hear about you? Draw me up an account of yourstewardship because you are not to be my steward any longer."2 And he called him, and said to him: How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship: for now thou canst be steward no longer.
Then the steward said to himself, "Now that my master is taking the stewardship from me, what am I todo? Dig? I am not strong enough. Go begging? I should be too ashamed.3 And the steward said within himself: What shall I do, because my lord taketh away from me the stewardship? To dig I am not able; to beg I am ashamed.
Ah, I know what I wil do to make sure that when I am dismissed from office there will be some towelcome me into their homes."4 I know what I will do, that when I shall be removed from the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.
'Then he called his master's debtors one by one. To the first he said, "How much do you owe mymaster?"5 Therefore calling together every one of his lord's debtors, he said to the first: How much dost thou owe my lord?
"One hundred measures of oil," he said. The steward said, "Here, take your bond; sit down and quickly write fifty."6 But he said: An hundred barrels of oil. And he said to him: Take thy bill and sit down quickly, and write fifty.
To another he said, "And you, sir, how much do you owe?" "One hundred measures of wheat," hesaid. The steward said, "Here, take your bond and write eighty."7 Then he said to another: And how much dost thou owe? Who said: An hundred quarters of wheat. He said to him: Take thy bill, and write eighty.
'The master praised the dishonest steward for his astuteness. For the children of this world are moreastute in dealing with their own kind than are the children of light.'8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, forasmuch as he had done wisely: for the children of this world are wiser in their generation than the children of light.
'And so I tel you this: use money, tainted as it is, to win you friends, and thus make sure that when itfails you, they wil welcome you into eternal dwel ings.9 And I say to you: Make unto you friends of the mammon of iniquity; that when you shall fail, they may receive you into everlasting dwellings.
Anyone who is trustworthy in little things is trustworthy in great; anyone who is dishonest in littlethings is dishonest in great.10 He that is faithful in that which is least, is faithful also in that which is greater: and he that is unjust in that which is little, is unjust also in that which is greater.
If then you are not trustworthy with money, that tainted thing, who wil trust you with genuine riches?11 If then you have not been faithful in the unjust mammon; who will trust you with that which is the true?
And if you are not trustworthy with what is not yours, who will give you what is your very own?12 And if you have not been faithful in that which is another's; who will give you that which is your own?
'No servant can be the slave of two masters: he wil either hate the first and love the second, or beattached to the first and despise the second. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money.'13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and jeered at him.14 Now the Pharisees, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him.
He said to them, 'You are the very ones who pass yourselves off as upright in people's sight, but Godknows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed in human eyes is loathsome in the sight of God.15 And he said to them: You are they who justify yourselves before men, but God knoweth your hearts; for that which is high to men, is an abomination before God.
'Up to the time of John it was the Law and the Prophets; from then onwards, the kingdom of God hasbeen preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it.16 The law and the prophets were until John; from that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every one useth violence towards it.
'It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for one little stroke to drop out of the Law.17 And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fall.
'Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another is guilty of adultery, and the man who marries awoman divorced by her husband commits adultery.18 Every one that putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and he that marrieth her that is put away from her husband, commmitteth adultery.
'There was a rich man who used to dress in purple and fine linen and feast magnificently every day.19 There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen; and feasted sumptuously every day.
And at his gate there used to lie a poor man called Lazarus, covered with sores,20 And there was a certain beggar, named Lazarus, who lay at his gate, full of sores,
who longed to fil himself with what fel from the rich man's table. Even dogs came and licked hissores.21 Desiring to be filled with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table, and no one did give him; moreover the dogs came, and licked his sores.
Now it happened that the poor man died and was carried away by the angels into Abraham'sembrace. The rich man also died and was buried.22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. And the rich man also died: and he was buried in hell.
'In his torment in Hades he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus in his embrace.23 And lifting up his eyes when he was in torments, he saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom:
So he cried out, "Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water andcool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames."24 And he cried, and said: Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, to cool my tongue: for I am tormented in this flame.
Abraham said, "My son, remember that during your life you had your fill of good things, just asLazarus his fill of bad. Now he is being comforted here while you are in agony.25 And Abraham said to him: Son, remember that thou didst receive good things in thy lifetime, and likewise Lazareth evil things, but now he is comforted; and thou art tormented.
But that is not al : between us and you a great gulf has been fixed, to prevent those who want tocross from our side to yours or from your side to ours."26 And besides all this, between us and you, there is fixed a great chaos: so that they who would pass from hence to you, cannot, nor from thence come hither.
'So he said, "Father, I beg you then to send Lazarus to my father's house,27 And he said: Then, father, I beseech thee, that thou wouldst send him to my father's house, for I have five brethren,
since I have five brothers, to give them warning so that they do not come to this place of torment too."28 That he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torments.
Abraham said, "They have Moses and the prophets, let them listen to them."29 And Abraham said to him: They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
The rich man replied, "Ah no, father Abraham, but if someone comes to them from the dead, they willrepent."30 But he said: No, father Abraham: but if one went to them from the dead, they will do penance.
Then Abraham said to him, "If they wil not listen either to Moses or to the prophets, they wil not beconvinced even if someone should rise from the dead."31 And he said to him: If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they believe, if one rise again from the dead.
