NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to put him to the test they asked if he would show them asign from heaven.1 Et accesserunt ad eum pharisæi et sadducæi tentantes : et rogaverunt eum ut signum de cælo ostenderet eis.
He replied, 'In the evening you say, "It wil be fine; there's a red sky,"2 At ille respondens, ait illis : Facto vespere dicitis : Serenum erit, rubicundum est enim cælum.
and in the morning, "Stormy weather today; the sky is red and overcast." You know how to read theface of the sky, but you cannot read the signs of the times.3 Et mane : Hodie tempestas, rutilat enim triste cælum.
It is an evil and unfaithful generation asking for a sign, and the only sign it wil be given is the sign ofJonah.' And he left them and went off.4 Faciem ergo cæli dijudicare nostis : signa autem temporum non potestis scire ? Generatio mala et adultera signum quærit : et signum non dabitur ei, nisi signum Jonæ prophetæ. Et relictis illis, abiit.
The disciples, having crossed to the other side, had forgotten to take any food.5 Et cum venissent discipuli ejus trans fretum, obliti sunt panes accipere.
Jesus said to them, 'Keep your eyes open, and be on your guard against the yeast of the Phariseesand Sadducees.'6 Qui dixit illis : Intuemini, et cavete a fermento pharisæorum et sadducæorum.
And they said among themselves, 'It is because we have not brought any bread.'7 At illi cogitabant intra se dicentes : Quia panes non accepimus.
Jesus knew it, and he said, 'You have so little faith, why are you talking among yourselves abouthaving no bread?8 Sciens autem Jesus, dixit : Quid cogitatis intra vos modicæ fidei, quia panes non habetis ?
Do you stil not understand? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand and thenumber of baskets you col ected?9 Nondum intelligitis, neque recordamini quinque panum in quinque millia hominum, et quot cophinos sumpsistis ?
Or the seven loaves for the four thousand and the number of baskets you col ected?10 neque septem panum in quatuor millia hominum, et quot sportas sumpsistis ?
How could you fail to understand that I was not talking about bread? What I said was: Beware of theyeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.'11 Quare non intelligitis, quia non de pane dixi vobis : Cavete a fermento pharisæorum et sadducæorum ?
Then they understood that he was tel ing them to be on their guard, not against yeast for makingbread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.12 Tunc intellexerunt quia non dixerit cavendum a fermento panum, sed a doctrina pharisæorum et sadducæorum.
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi he put this question to his disciples, 'Who dopeople say the Son of man is?'13 Venit autem Jesus in partes Cæsareæ Philippi : et interrogabat discipulos suos, dicens : Quem dicunt homines esse Filium hominis ?
And they said, 'Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.'14 At illi dixerunt : Alii Joannem Baptistam, alii autem Eliam, alii vero Jeremiam, aut unum ex prophetis.
'But you,' he said, 'who do you say I am?'15 Dicit illis Jesus : Vos autem, quem me esse dicitis ?
Then Simon Peter spoke up and said, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.'16 Respondens Simon Petrus dixit : Tu es Christus, Filius Dei vivi.
Jesus replied, 'Simon son of Jonah, you are a blessed man! Because it was no human agency thatrevealed this to you but my Father in heaven.17 Respondens autem Jesus, dixit ei : Beatus es Simon Bar Jona : quia caro et sanguis non revelavit tibi, sed Pater meus, qui in cælis est.
So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I wil build my community. And the gates of theunderworld can never overpower it.18 Et ego dico tibi, quia tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram ædificabo Ecclesiam meam, et portæ inferi non prævalebunt adversus eam.
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of Heaven: whatever you bind on earth will be bound inheaven; whatever you loose on earth wil be loosed in heaven.'19 Et tibi dabo claves regni cælorum. Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in cælis : et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in cælis.
Then he gave the disciples strict orders not to say to anyone that he was the Christ.20 Tunc præcepit discipulis suis ut nemini dicerent quia ipse esset Jesus Christus.
From then onwards Jesus began to make it clear to his disciples that he was destined to go toJerusalem and suffer grievously at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes and to be put to deathand to be raised up on the third day.21 Exinde cœpit Jesus ostendere discipulis suis, quia oporteret eum ire Jerosolymam, et multa pati a senioribus, et scribis, et principibus sacerdotum, et occidi, et tertia die resurgere.
Then, taking him aside, Peter started to rebuke him. 'Heaven preserve you, Lord,' he said, 'this mustnot happen to you.'22 Et assumens eum Petrus, cœpit increpare illum dicens : Absit a te, Domine : non erit tibi hoc.
But he turned and said to Peter, 'Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle in my path, becauseyou are thinking not as God thinks but as human beings do.'23 Qui conversus, dixit Petro : Vade post me Satana, scandalum es mihi : quia non sapis ea quæ Dei sunt, sed ea quæ hominum.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'If anyone wants to be a fol ower of mine, let him renounce himselfand take up his cross and follow me.24 Tunc Jesus dixit discipulis suis : Si quis vult post me venire, abneget semetipsum, et tollat crucem suam, et sequatur me.
Anyone who wants to save his life wil lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.25 Qui enim voluerit animam suam salvam facere, perdet eam : qui autem perdiderit animam suam propter me, inveniet eam.
What, then, wil anyone gain by winning the whole world and forfeiting his life? Or what can anyoneoffer in exchange for his life?26 Quid enim prodest homini, si mundum universum lucretur, animæ vero suæ detrimentum patiatur ? aut quam dabit homo commutationem pro anima sua ?
'For the Son of man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he wilreward each one according to his behaviour.27 Filius enim hominis venturus est in gloria Patris sui cum angelis suis : et tunc reddet unicuique secundum opera ejus.
In truth I tel you, there are some standing here who wil not taste death before they see the Son ofman coming with his kingdom.'28 Amen dico vobis, sunt quidam de hic stantibus, qui non gustabunt mortem, donec videant Filium hominis venientem in regno suo.
