Matthew 16

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to put him to the test they asked if he would show them asign from heaven.	1 Los fariseos y los saduceos se acercaron a él y, para ponerlo a prueba, le pidieron que les hiciera ver un signo del cielo.
2 He replied, 'In the evening you say, "It wil be fine; there's a red sky,"	2 El les respondió: «Al atardecer, ustedes dicen: «Va a hacer buen tiempo, porque el cielo está rojo como el fuego».
3 and in the morning, "Stormy weather today; the sky is red and overcast." You know how to read theface of the sky, but you cannot read the signs of the times.	3 Y de madrugada, dicen: «Hoy habrá tormenta, porque el cielo está rojo oscuro». ¡De manera que saben interpretar el aspecto del cielo, pero no los signos de los tiempos!
4 It is an evil and unfaithful generation asking for a sign, and the only sign it wil be given is the sign ofJonah.' And he left them and went off.	4 Esta generación malvada y adúltera reclama un signo, pero no se le dará otro signo que el de Jonás». Y en seguida los dejó y se fue.
5 The disciples, having crossed to the other side, had forgotten to take any food.	5 Al pasar a la orilla, los discípulos se olvidaron de llevar pan.
6 Jesus said to them, 'Keep your eyes open, and be on your guard against the yeast of the Phariseesand Sadducees.'	6 Jesús les dijo: «Estén atentos y cuídense de la levadura de los fariseos y de los saduceos».
7 And they said among themselves, 'It is because we have not brought any bread.'	7 Ellos pensaban: «Lo dice porque no hemos traído pan».
8 Jesus knew it, and he said, 'You have so little faith, why are you talking among yourselves abouthaving no bread?	8 Jesús se dio cuenta y les dijo: «Hombres de poca fe, ¿cómo están pensando que no tienen pan?
9 Do you stil not understand? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand and thenumber of baskets you col ected?	9 ¿Todavía no comprenden? ¿No se acuerdan de los cinco panes para cinco mil personas y del número de canastas que juntaron?
10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand and the number of baskets you col ected?	10 ¿Y tampoco recuerdan lo siete panes para cuatro mil personas, y cuántas canastas recogieron?
11 How could you fail to understand that I was not talking about bread? What I said was: Beware of theyeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.'	11 ¿Cómo no comprenden que no me refería al pan? ¡Cuídense de la levadura de los fariseos y de los saduceos!».
12 Then they understood that he was tel ing them to be on their guard, not against yeast for makingbread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.	12 Entonces entendieron que les había dicho que se cuidaran, no de la levadura del pan, sino de la doctrina de los fariseos y de los saduceos.
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi he put this question to his disciples, 'Who dopeople say the Son of man is?'	13 Al llegar a la región de Cesarea de Filipo, Jesús preguntó a sus discípulos: «¿Qué dice la gente sobre el Hijo del hombre? ¿Quién dicen que es?».
14 And they said, 'Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.'	14 Ellos le respondieron: «Unos dicen que es Juan el Bautista; otros Elías; y otros, Jeremías o alguno de los profetas».
15 'But you,' he said, 'who do you say I am?'	15 «Y ustedes, les preguntó, ¿quién dicen que soy?».
16 Then Simon Peter spoke up and said, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.'	16 Tomando la palabra, Simón Pedro respondió: «Tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios vivo».
17 Jesus replied, 'Simon son of Jonah, you are a blessed man! Because it was no human agency thatrevealed this to you but my Father in heaven.	17 Y Jesús le dijo: «Feliz de ti, Simón, hijo de Jonás, porque esto no te lo ha revelado ni la carne ni la sangre, sino mi Padre que está en el cielo.
18 So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I wil build my community. And the gates of theunderworld can never overpower it.	18 Y yo te digo: «Tú eres Pedro, y sobre esta piedra edificaré mi iglesia, y el poder de la Muerte no prevalecerá contra ella.
19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of Heaven: whatever you bind on earth will be bound inheaven; whatever you loose on earth wil be loosed in heaven.'	19 Yo te dará las llaves del Reino de los Cielos. Todo lo que ates en la tierra, quedará atado en el cielo, y todo lo que desates en la tierra, quedará desatado en el cielo».
20 Then he gave the disciples strict orders not to say to anyone that he was the Christ.	20 Entonces ordenó severamente a sus discípulos que no dijeran a nadie que él era el Mesías.
21 From then onwards Jesus began to make it clear to his disciples that he was destined to go toJerusalem and suffer grievously at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes and to be put to deathand to be raised up on the third day.	21 Desde aquel día, Jesús comenzó a anunciar a sus discípulos que debía ir a Jerusalén, y sufrir mucho de parte de los ancianos, de los sumos sacerdotes y de los escribas; que debía ser condenado a muerte y resucitar al tercer día.
22 Then, taking him aside, Peter started to rebuke him. 'Heaven preserve you, Lord,' he said, 'this mustnot happen to you.'	22 Pedro lo llevó aparte y comenzó a reprenderlo, diciendo: «Dios no lo permita, Señor, eso no sucederá».
23 But he turned and said to Peter, 'Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle in my path, becauseyou are thinking not as God thinks but as human beings do.'	23 Pero él, dándose vuelta, dijo a Pedro: «¡Retírate, ve detrás de mí, Satanás! Tú eres para mí un obstáculo, porque tus pensamientos no son los de Dios, sino los de los hombres».
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'If anyone wants to be a fol ower of mine, let him renounce himselfand take up his cross and follow me.	24 Entonces Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: «El que quiera venir detrás de mí, que renuncie a sí mismo, que cargue con su cruz y me siga.
25 Anyone who wants to save his life wil lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.	25 Porque él que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá; y el que pierda su vida a causa de mí, la encontrará.
26 What, then, wil anyone gain by winning the whole world and forfeiting his life? Or what can anyoneoffer in exchange for his life?	26 ¿De qué le servirá al hombre ganar el mundo entero si pierde su vida? ¿Y qué podrá dar el hombre a cambio de su vida?
27 'For the Son of man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he wilreward each one according to his behaviour.	27 Porque el Hijo del hombre vendrá en la gloria de su Padre, rodeado de sus ángeles, y entonces pagará a cada uno de acuerdo con sus obras.
28 In truth I tel you, there are some standing here who wil not taste death before they see the Son ofman coming with his kingdom.'	28 Les aseguro que algunos de los que están aquí presentes no morirán antes de ver al Hijo del hombre, cuando venga en su Reino».
