NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	1 Il Signore disse a Mosè:
2 'Exact the ful vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites. Afterwards you will be gathered to yourpeople.'	2 "Vendica i figli d'Israele dai Madianiti, poi ti riunirai al tuo popolo".
3 Moses said to the people, 'Some of you are to take up arms for Yahweh's campaign against Midian,to carry out the vengeance of Yahweh on Midian.	3 Mosè ordinò al popolo: "Si armino tra voi uomini per l'esercito: marcino contro Madian per eseguire la vendetta del Signore contro Madian.
4 You will put a thousand men in the field from each of the tribes of Israel.'	4 Invierete nell'esercito mille uomini per ogni tribù, di tutte le tribù d'Israele".
5 In this way Israel's thousands provided twelve thousand men equipped for war, one thousand fromeach tribe:	5 Così, tra le migliaia d'Israele, furono forniti mille uomini per tribù, 12.000 uomini equipaggiati per la guerra.
6 Moses put them in the field, one thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of the priest Eleazar,to go with them carrying the sacred objects and the trumpets for the battle cry.	6 Mosè li mandò in guerra, mille per tribù, e con loro Finees, figlio del sacerdote Eleazaro, con in mano gli oggetti sacri e le trombe per l'acclamazione.
7 They made war on Midian, as Yahweh had ordered Moses, and put every male to death.	7 Mossero contro Madian, come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè, e uccisero tutti i maschi.
8 What is more, they kil ed the kings of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, the five Midianite kings;they also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.	8 Oltre ai loro caduti, uccisero i cinque re di Madian: Evi, Rekem, Sur, Ur, Reba, e uccisero con la spada Balaam, figlio di Beor.
9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and their little ones captive and carried off al their cattle, altheir flocks and al their goods as booty.	9 Poi i figli d'Israele fecero schiave le donne di Madian, i loro bambini, fecero razzia dei loro animali, dei loro greggi e di ogni loro bene.
10 They set fire to the towns where they lived and to al their encampments.	10 Incendiarono le città dove abitavano e i loro recinti;
11 Then, taking al their booty, everything they had captured, human and animal,	11 presero tutto il bottino e la preda, gente e animali,
12 they brought the captives, spoil and booty to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the whole community ofIsraelites at the camp on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho.	12 e condussero i prigionieri, la preda e il bottino a Mosè, al sacerdote Eleazaro e alla comunità dei figli d'Israele, accampati nelle steppe di Moab, presso il Giordano di Gerico.
13 Moses, the priest Eleazar and al the leaders of the community went out of the camp to meet them.	13 Mosè, il sacerdote Eleazaro e tutti i capi della comunità uscirono incontro a loro, fuori dell'accampamento.
14 Moses was enraged with the officers of the army, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, who had come back from this military expedition.	14 Mosè si arrabbiò contro i comandanti dell'esercito, capi delle migliaia e capi delle centinaia, che tornavano da quella spedizione di guerra.
15 He said, 'Why have you spared the life of al the women?	15 Mosè disse loro: "Avete lasciato in vita tutte le femmine?
16 They were the very ones who, on Balaam's advice, caused the Israelites to be unfaithful to Yahwehin the affair at Peor: hence the plague which struck Yahweh's community.	16 Furono esse, per suggerimento di Balaam, a stornare dal Signore i figli d'Israele nel fatto di Peor e ad attirare il flagello sulla comunità del Signore.
17 So kil al the male children and kil al the women who have ever slept with a man;	17 Ora uccidete ogni maschio tra i bambini e ogni donna che sia unita con un uomo.
18 but spare the lives of the young girls who have never slept with a man, and keep them foryourselves.	18 Tutte le ragazze che non si sono unite con un uomo le lascerete vivere per voi.
19 As for you, bivouac outside the camp for seven days, everyone who has kil ed anyone or touched acorpse. Purify yourselves and your prisoners on the third and seventh days,	19 Voi fermatevi fuori dell'accampamento per sette giorni; chi ha ucciso qualcuno e chiunque ha toccato un ucciso si purifichi nel terzo giorno e nel settimo giorno; questo per voi e per i vostri prigionieri.
20 and purify al clothing, everything made of skin, everything woven of goat's hair and everythingmade of wood.'	20 Purificherete anche i vestiti, tutti gli oggetti di pelle, tutti i lavori di pelo di capra e tutti gli oggetti di legno".
21 The priest Eleazar said to the soldiers who had come back from the campaign, 'This is an article ofthe Law which Yahweh prescribed to Moses:	21 Il sacerdote Eleazaro disse ai soldati che erano andati in guerra: "Questa è la prescrizione della legge che il Signore ha ordinato a Mosè:
22 although gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,	22 l'oro, l'argento, il rame, il ferro, lo stagno e il piombo,
23 everything that can withstand fire can be cleaned by being passed through fire, it must stil bepurified with water for purification. Whatever cannot resist fire you must pass through water.	23 tutte le cose che sopportano il fuoco, le farete passare nel fuoco e saranno pure; siano poi purificate anche nell'acqua lustrale. Tutto quello che non può sopportare il fuoco, lo farete passare nell'acqua.
24 'Wash your clothes on the seventh day and you wil then be clean. You may then re-enter the camp.'	24 Laverete i vostri vestiti nel settimo giorno e sarete puri: poi rientrerete nell'accampamento".
25 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:	25 Il Signore ordinò a Mosè:
26 'With the priest Eleazar and the heads of families in the community, take a count of the spoils andcaptives, human and animal.	26 "Tu, il sacerdote Eleazaro e i capi dei casati della comunità fate il computo della preda che è stata fatta, in persone o animali:
27 You wil then share out the spoil, half and half, between those who fought the campaign and the restof the community.	27 dividerai a metà la preda tra chi ha preso parte alla guerra e tutta la comunità.
28 From the share of the combatants who took part in the campaign, you wil set aside one out of everyfive hundred persons, oxen, donkeys and sheep as Yahweh's portion.	28 Preleverai come contributo per il Signore l'uno per cinquecento delle persone, buoi, asini e pecore della parte spettante ai soldati che sono andati in guerra:
29 You wil take this from the half share coming to them and give it to the priest Eleazar as the portionset aside for Yahweh.	29 ne prenderete della loro metà e la darete al sacerdote Eleazaro, come prelievo per il Signore.
30 From the half coming to the Israelites, you will take one out of every fifty persons, oxen, donkeys,sheep, and al other animals, and give them to the Levites who are responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing.'	30 Sulla metà dei figli d'Israele prenderai l'uno per cinquanta delle persone, buoi, asini, pecore e li darai ai leviti che hanno in custodia la dimora del Signore".
31 Moses and the priest Eleazar did as Yahweh had ordered Moses.	31 Mosè e il sacerdote Eleazaro fecero come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè.
32 The spoils, the remainder of the booty captured by the soldiers, came to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep and goats,	32 Or il bottino della razzia che avevano fatto i soldati dell'esercito era di 67 5.000 pecore,
33 seventy-two thousand head of cattle,	33 72.000 buoi,
34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,	34 61.000 asini
35 and in persons, women who had never slept with a man, thirty-two thousand in al .	35 e 32.000 persone, cioè donne che non si erano unite con uomo.
36 Half was assigned to those who had taken part in the war, namely three hundred and thirty-seventhousand five hundred sheep and goats,	36 La metà, cioè la parte di quelli andati in guerra, fu di 337.500 pecore,
37 of which Yahweh's portion was six hundred and seventy-five,	37 e il tributo per il Signore fu di seicentosettantacinque pecore;
38 thirty-six thousand head of cattle, of which Yahweh's portion was seventy-two,	38 per i buoi, 36.000, di cui settantadue in tributo al Signore;
39 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, of which Yahweh's portion was sixty-one,	39 30.500 asini, di cui trentuno in tributo al Signore;
40 and sixteen thousand persons, of which Yahweh's portion was thirty-two.	40 16.000 persone, di cui trentadue in tributo al Signore.
41 Moses gave the priest Eleazar the portion set aside for Yahweh, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.	41 Mosè diede il tributo di prelievo del Signore al sacerdote Eleazaro, come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè.
42 As for the half coming to the Israelites which Moses had separated from that of the combatants,	42 Quanto alla metà dei figli d'Israele, che Mosè aveva diviso dagli uomini dell'esercito,
43 this half, the community's share, came to three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundredsheep and goats,	43 la metà per la comunità fu di 337.500 pecore,
44 thirty-six thousand head of cattle,	44 36.000 buoi,
45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys	45 30.500 asini,
46 and sixteen thousand persons.	46 16.000 persone.
47 From this half, the Israelites' share, Moses took one out of every fifty, human and animal, and gavethem to the Levites who were responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.	47 Mosè, dalla metà spettante ai figli d'Israele, prese l'uno per cinquanta delle persone e degli animali e li diede ai leviti, che hanno in custodia la dimora del Signore, com'egli aveva ordinato a Mosè.
48 The officers of the thousands who had fought the campaign, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, came to Moses	48 I preposti alle migliaia dell'esercito, capi di migliaia e capi di centinaia, si avvicinarono a Mosè,
49 and said, 'Your servants have numbered the soldiers under their command: none of our men ismissing.	49 e gli dissero: "I tuoi servi hanno fatto il censimento degli uomini di guerra che erano ai nostri ordini, e non ne manca nessuno.
50 So, as an offering for Yahweh, we have brought what each of us has found in the way of goldornaments, armlets and bracelets, rings, earrings and breastplates, to make expiation for ourselves beforeYahweh.'	50 Vogliamo presentare in dono al Signore quello che ciascuno di noi ha trovato di oggetti d'oro: catenelle, braccialetti, anelli, orecchini, collane, per fare il rito di espiazione per noi davanti al Signore".
51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, al this jewel ery.	51 Mosè e il sacerdote Eleazaro presero da essi l'oro, tutti gli oggetti lavorati.
52 This portion of gold given to Yahweh by the commanders of the thousands and commanders of thehundreds amounted to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.	52 Tutto l'oro dell'offerta che i capi di migliaia e i capi di centinaia fecero per il Signore fu di 16.750 sicli.
53 Each of the soldiers took his own booty.	53 Gli uomini dell'esercito tennero ognuno per sé quanto avevano razziato.
54 But Moses and the priest Eleazar, having accepted the gold from the commanders of the thousandsand commanders of the hundreds, brought it into the Tent of Meeting, to be a reminder of the Israelites beforeYahweh.	54 Mosè e il sacerdote Eleazaro presero l'oro dei capi di migliaia e di centinaia e lo portarono alla tenda del convegno, in ricordo ai figli d'Israele, davanti al Signore.
