NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	1 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:
2 'Exact the ful vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites. Afterwards you will be gathered to yourpeople.'	2 "Accomplis la vengeance des Israélites sur les Madianites. Ensuite tu seras réuni aux tiens."
3 Moses said to the people, 'Some of you are to take up arms for Yahweh's campaign against Midian,to carry out the vengeance of Yahweh on Midian.	3 Moïse parla ainsi au peuple: "Que certains d'entre vous s'arment pour la campagne de Yahvécontre Madiân, pour payer à Madiân le salaire de la vengeance de Yahvé.
4 You will put a thousand men in the field from each of the tribes of Israel.'	4 Vous mettrez en campagne mille hommes pour chacune des tribus d'Israël."
5 In this way Israel's thousands provided twelve thousand men equipped for war, one thousand fromeach tribe:	5 Les milliers d'Israël fournirent, à raison d'un millier par tribu, 12.000 hommes armés pour lacampagne.
6 Moses put them in the field, one thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of the priest Eleazar,to go with them carrying the sacred objects and the trumpets for the battle cry.	6 Moïse les mit en campagne, un millier par tribu, et leur joignit Pinhas, fils d'Eléazar le prêtre,porteur des objets sacrés et des trompettes pour les acclamations.
7 They made war on Midian, as Yahweh had ordered Moses, and put every male to death.	7 Ils firent campagne contre Madiân, comme Yahvé l'avait ordonné à Moïse, et tuèrent tous lesmâles.
8 What is more, they kil ed the kings of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, the five Midianite kings;they also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.	8 En outre, ils tuèrent les rois de Madiân, Evi, Réqem, Cur, Hur et Réba, cinq rois madianites; ilspassèrent aussi au fil de l'épée Balaam, fils de Béor.
9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and their little ones captive and carried off al their cattle, altheir flocks and al their goods as booty.	9 Les Israélites emmenèrent captives les femmes des Madianites avec leurs petits enfants, ilsrazzièrent tout leur bétail, tous leurs troupeaux et tous leurs biens.
10 They set fire to the towns where they lived and to al their encampments.	10 Ils mirent le feu aux villes qu'ils habitaient ainsi qu'à tous leurs campements.
11 Then, taking al their booty, everything they had captured, human and animal,	11 Puis, prenant tout leur butin, tout ce qu'ils avaient capturé, bêtes et gens,
12 they brought the captives, spoil and booty to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the whole community ofIsraelites at the camp on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho.	12 ils amenèrent captifs, prises et butin à Moïse, à Eléazar le prêtre et à toute la communauté desIsraélites, jusqu'au camp, aux Steppes de Moab qui se trouvent près du Jourdain vers Jéricho.
13 Moses, the priest Eleazar and al the leaders of the community went out of the camp to meet them.	13 Moïse, Eléazar le prêtre et tous les princes de la communauté sortirent du camp à leur rencontre.
14 Moses was enraged with the officers of the army, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, who had come back from this military expedition.	14 Moïse s'emporta contre les commandants des forces, chefs de milliers et chefs de centaines, quirevenaient de cette expédition guerrière.
15 He said, 'Why have you spared the life of al the women?	15 Il leur dit: "Pourquoi avez-vous laissé la vie à toutes les femmes?
16 They were the very ones who, on Balaam's advice, caused the Israelites to be unfaithful to Yahwehin the affair at Peor: hence the plague which struck Yahweh's community.	16 Ce sont elles qui, sur les conseils de Balaam, ont été pour les Israélites une cause d'infidélité àYahvé dans l'affaire de Péor: d'où le fléau qui a sévi sur la communauté de Yahvé.
17 So kil al the male children and kil al the women who have ever slept with a man;	17 Tuez donc tous les enfants mâles. Tuez aussi toutes les femmes qui ont connu un homme enpartageant sa couche.
18 but spare the lives of the young girls who have never slept with a man, and keep them foryourselves.	18 Ne laissez la vie qu'aux petites filles qui n'ont pas partagé la couche d'un homme, et qu'ellessoient à vous.
19 As for you, bivouac outside the camp for seven days, everyone who has kil ed anyone or touched acorpse. Purify yourselves and your prisoners on the third and seventh days,	19 Quant à vous, campez durant sept jours hors du camp, vous tous qui avez tué quelqu'un outouché un cadavre. Purifiez-vous, vous et vos prisonniers, le troisième et le septième jour;
20 and purify al clothing, everything made of skin, everything woven of goat's hair and everythingmade of wood.'	20 purifiez aussi tous les vêtements, tous les objets en peau, tous les tissus en poil de chèvre, tousles objets en bois."
21 The priest Eleazar said to the soldiers who had come back from the campaign, 'This is an article ofthe Law which Yahweh prescribed to Moses:	21 Eléazar le prêtre dit aux combattants qui revenaient de cette campagne: "Voici un article de laLoi que Yahvé a prescrite à Moïse.
22 although gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,	22 Toutefois l'or, l'argent, le bronze, le fer, l'étain, le plomb,
23 everything that can withstand fire can be cleaned by being passed through fire, it must stil bepurified with water for purification. Whatever cannot resist fire you must pass through water.	23 tout ce qui peut aller au feu, vous le ferez passer par le feu et cela sera pur; mais c'est par leseaux lustrales que cela sera purifié. Et tout ce qui ne peut aller au feu vous le ferez passer par l'eau."
24 'Wash your clothes on the seventh day and you wil then be clean. You may then re-enter the camp.'	24 Vous laverez vos vêtements le septième jour et vous serez purs. Vous pourrez ensuite rentrer aucamp.
25 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:	25 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:
26 'With the priest Eleazar and the heads of families in the community, take a count of the spoils andcaptives, human and animal.	26 "Avec Eléazar le prêtre et les chefs de famille de la communauté, fais le compte des prises etdes captifs, gens et bêtes.
27 You wil then share out the spoil, half and half, between those who fought the campaign and the restof the community.	27 Puis tu partageras les prises, par moitié, entre les combattants qui ont fait la campagne etl'ensemble de la communauté.
28 From the share of the combatants who took part in the campaign, you wil set aside one out of everyfive hundred persons, oxen, donkeys and sheep as Yahweh's portion.	28 Comme redevance pour Yahvé, tu prélèveras, sur la part des combattants qui ont fait lacampagne, un sur 500 des gens, du gros bétail, des ânes et du petit bétail.
29 You wil take this from the half share coming to them and give it to the priest Eleazar as the portionset aside for Yahweh.	29 Tu prendras cela sur la moitié qui leur revient, et tu le donneras à Eléazar le prêtre, commeprélèvement pour Yahvé.
30 From the half coming to the Israelites, you will take one out of every fifty persons, oxen, donkeys,sheep, and al other animals, and give them to the Levites who are responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing.'	30 Sur la moitié qui revient aux Israélites tu prendras un sur 50 des gens, du gros bétail, des ânes etdu petit bétail, de toutes les bêtes, et tu le donneras aux Lévites qui assument la charge de la Demeure deYahvé."
31 Moses and the priest Eleazar did as Yahweh had ordered Moses.	31 Moïse et Eléazar le prêtre firent comme Yahvé l'avait commandé à Moïse.
32 The spoils, the remainder of the booty captured by the soldiers, came to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep and goats,	32 Or les prises, le reste du butin que la troupe partie en campagne avait razzié, se montaient àmille têtes de petit bétail,
33 seventy-two thousand head of cattle,	33 72.000 têtes de gros bétail,
34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,	34 61.000 ânes,
35 and in persons, women who had never slept with a man, thirty-two thousand in al .	35 et, en fait de gens, de femmes n'ayant pas partagé la couche d'un homme, mille personnes entout.
36 Half was assigned to those who had taken part in the war, namely three hundred and thirty-seventhousand five hundred sheep and goats,	36 La moitié en fut assignée à ceux qui avaient fait campagne, soit 337.500 têtes de petit bétail,
37 of which Yahweh's portion was six hundred and seventy-five,	37 dont 675 en redevance pour Yahvé,
38 thirty-six thousand head of cattle, of which Yahweh's portion was seventy-two,	38 36.000 têtes de gros bétail, dont 72 en redevance pour Yahvé,
39 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, of which Yahweh's portion was sixty-one,	39 30.500 ânes, dont 61 en redevance pour Yahvé,
40 and sixteen thousand persons, of which Yahweh's portion was thirty-two.	40 et 16.000 personnes, dont 32 en redevance pour Yahvé.
41 Moses gave the priest Eleazar the portion set aside for Yahweh, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.	41 Moïse donna à Eléazar le prêtre la redevance prélevée pour Yahvé, comme Yahvé l'avaitordonné à Moïse.
42 As for the half coming to the Israelites which Moses had separated from that of the combatants,	42 Quant à la moitié qui revenait aux Israélites, et que Moïse avait séparée de celle descombattants,
43 this half, the community's share, came to three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundredsheep and goats,	43 cette moitié, part de la communauté, se montait à 337.500 têtes de petit bétail,
44 thirty-six thousand head of cattle,	44 36.000 têtes de gros bétail,
45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys	45 30.500 ânes
46 and sixteen thousand persons.	46 et 16.000 personnes.
47 From this half, the Israelites' share, Moses took one out of every fifty, human and animal, and gavethem to the Levites who were responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.	47 Sur cette moitié, part des Israélites, Moïse prit un sur 50 des gens et des bêtes et il les donna auxLévites qui assumaient la charge de la Demeure de Yahvé, comme Yahvé l'avait ordonné à Moïse.
48 The officers of the thousands who had fought the campaign, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, came to Moses	48 Les commandants des milliers qui avaient fait la campagne, chefs de milliers et chefs decentaines, vinrent trouver Moïse
49 and said, 'Your servants have numbered the soldiers under their command: none of our men ismissing.	49 et lui dirent: "Tes serviteurs ont fait le compte des combattants dont ils disposaient: il n'enmanque aucun.
50 So, as an offering for Yahweh, we have brought what each of us has found in the way of goldornaments, armlets and bracelets, rings, earrings and breastplates, to make expiation for ourselves beforeYahweh.'	50 Aussi apportons-nous chacun en offrande à Yahvé ce que nous avons trouvé en fait d'objets d'or,bracelets de bras et de poignet, bagues, boucles d'oreille, pectoraux, qui serviront pour nous d'expiation devantYahvé."
51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, al this jewel ery.	51 Moïse et Eléazar le prêtre reçurent d'eux cet or, tous ces bijoux.
52 This portion of gold given to Yahweh by the commanders of the thousands and commanders of thehundreds amounted to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.	52 Ce prélèvement d'or qu'ils firent pour Yahvé donna un total de 16.750 sicles, fourni par les chefsde milliers et chefs de centaines.
53 Each of the soldiers took his own booty.	53 Les combattants firent chacun leur butin.
54 But Moses and the priest Eleazar, having accepted the gold from the commanders of the thousandsand commanders of the hundreds, brought it into the Tent of Meeting, to be a reminder of the Israelites beforeYahweh.	54 Mais Moïse et Eléazar le prêtre reçurent l'or des chefs de milliers et de centaines, etl'apportèrent à la Tente du Rendez-vous pour faire mémoire des Israélites devant Yahvé.
