1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	1 E il Signore parlò a Mosè, e disse:
2 'Exact the ful vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites. Afterwards you will be gathered to yourpeople.'	2 Fa' prima vendetta del malefatto da' Madianiti a' figliuoli d'Israele, e poi te ne andrai altuo popolo.
3 Moses said to the people, 'Some of you are to take up arms for Yahweh's campaign against Midian,to carry out the vengeance of Yahweh on Midian.	3 E Mosè subito disse: Si mettano all'ordine per combattere un numero di vostra gente, chepossano esercitar la vendetta del Signore sopra de' Madianiti:
4 You will put a thousand men in the field from each of the tribes of Israel.'	4 Si scelgano mille uomini da ogni tribù d'Israele, che si spediscano a questa guerra,
5 In this way Israel's thousands provided twelve thousand men equipped for war, one thousand fromeach tribe:	5 E furono eletti mille di ogni tribù, cioè dodici mila uomini armati di tutto punto:
6 Moses put them in the field, one thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of the priest Eleazar,to go with them carrying the sacred objects and the trumpets for the battle cry.	6 I quali Mosè, spedì con Phinees figliuolo di Eleazaro sommo sacerdote; e diede a lui anche ivasi santi, e le trombe per suonare.
7 They made war on Midian, as Yahweh had ordered Moses, and put every male to death.	7 E avendo attaccata la mischia co' Madianiti, e avendoli vinti, uccisero tutti i maschi,
8 What is more, they kil ed the kings of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, the five Midianite kings;they also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.	8 E i loro re, Evi, e Recem, e Sur, e Hur, e Rebe, cinque principi di quella nazione: ucciseroanche Balaam figliuolo di Beor.
9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and their little ones captive and carried off al their cattle, altheir flocks and al their goods as booty.	9 E presero le loro donne, e i fanciulli, e tutti i bestiami, e tutte le robe loro: tutto quelche poterono avere fu messo a saccomanno.
10 They set fire to the towns where they lived and to al their encampments.	10 E furono consumate dalle fiamme le città, e i borghi, e i castelli.
11 Then, taking al their booty, everything they had captured, human and animal,	11 E tolsero la preda, e tutto quello, onde si erano impadroniti, tanto uomini, come bestie,
12 they brought the captives, spoil and booty to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the whole community ofIsraelites at the camp on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho.	12 E li condussero a Mosè, e ad Eleazaro sommo sacerdote, e a tutta la moltitudine de'figliuoli d'Israele: le altre robe poi le portarono agli alloggiamenti nella pianura di Moabvicino al Giordano dirimpetto a Gerico.
13 Moses, the priest Eleazar and al the leaders of the community went out of the camp to meet them.	13 E Mosè ed Eleazaro sommo sacerdote, e tutti i principi della sinagoga andaron loroall'incontro fuora degli alloggiamenti.
14 Moses was enraged with the officers of the army, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, who had come back from this military expedition.	14 E Mosè andò in collera contro i capi dell'esercito, i tribuni, e i centurioni, che tornarondalla guerra;
15 He said, 'Why have you spared the life of al the women?	15 E disse: Perché avete salvate le donne?
16 They were the very ones who, on Balaam's advice, caused the Israelites to be unfaithful to Yahwehin the affair at Peor: hence the plague which struck Yahweh's community.	16 Non sono elleno quelle che a suggestione di Balaam sedussero i figliuoli d'Israele, e vifecero prevaricare contro il Signore col peccaminoso culto di Phogor, onde il popolo ebbeflagello?
17 So kil al the male children and kil al the women who have ever slept with a man;	17 Or voi uccidete tutti i maschi anche di tenera età: e scannate le donne che han conosciutouomo:
18 but spare the lives of the young girls who have never slept with a man, and keep them foryourselves.	18 Ma serbatevi le fanciulline, e tutte le donne vergini:
19 As for you, bivouac outside the camp for seven days, everyone who has kil ed anyone or touched acorpse. Purify yourselves and your prisoners on the third and seventh days,	19 E restate fuora degli alloggiamenti per sette giorni. Chi avrà ucciso un uomo, o toccato unucciso, si purificherà il terzo, e il settimo giorno:
20 and purify al clothing, everything made of skin, everything woven of goat's hair and everythingmade of wood.'	20 E tutta la preda, sieno vesti, sieno vasi, o mobili fatti di pelle, o di pelo di capra,ovvero di legno, si purificherà.
21 The priest Eleazar said to the soldiers who had come back from the campaign, 'This is an article ofthe Law which Yahweh prescribed to Moses:	21 Anche il sommo sacerdote Eleazaro parlò così a' soldati, che erano stati alla battaglia:Questo è l'ordine dato dal Signore a Mosè:
22 although gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,	22 L'oro e l'argento, e il rame, e il ferro, e il piombo, e lo stagno,
23 everything that can withstand fire can be cleaned by being passed through fire, it must stil bepurified with water for purification. Whatever cannot resist fire you must pass through water.	23 E tutto quello che può reggere al fuoco, si purificherà col fuoco: quelle cose poi, che nonpossono soffrir il fuoco, si santificheranno coll'acqua di espiazione:
24 'Wash your clothes on the seventh day and you wil then be clean. You may then re-enter the camp.'	24 E il settimo dì laverete le vostre vesti, e purificati entrerete poi negli alloggiamenti.
25 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:	25 Disse anche il Signore a Mosè:
26 'With the priest Eleazar and the heads of families in the community, take a count of the spoils andcaptives, human and animal.	26 Fate il conto di tutto quello che è preda dagli uomini fino alle bestie, tu, ed Eleazarosommo sacerdote, e i principi del popolo:
27 You wil then share out the spoil, half and half, between those who fought the campaign and the restof the community.	27 E dividerai in parti eguali il bottino tra coloro che hanno pugnato, e son iti alla guerra,e tra tutta l'altra moltitudine:
28 From the share of the combatants who took part in the campaign, you wil set aside one out of everyfive hundred persons, oxen, donkeys and sheep as Yahweh's portion.	28 E della parte di quelli che pugnarono, e andarono alla guerra, ne separerai pel Signore ognicinquecento capi uno tanto degli uomini, come de' buoi, pecore, ed asini,
29 You wil take this from the half share coming to them and give it to the priest Eleazar as the portionset aside for Yahweh.	29 E la darai ad Eleazaro sommo sacerdote, perché queste son le primizie del Signore.
30 From the half coming to the Israelites, you will take one out of every fifty persons, oxen, donkeys,sheep, and al other animals, and give them to the Levites who are responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing.'	30 Dell'altra metà ancora, che e de' figliuoli d'Israele, prenderai ogni cinquanta capi, unodegli uomini, de' buoi, degli asini, delle pecore, e di tutti gli animali, e li darai a'Leviti, che vegliano al servigio del tabernacolo del Signore.
31 Moses and the priest Eleazar did as Yahweh had ordered Moses.	31 E Mosè ed Eleazaro fecero secondo il comando del Signore.
32 The spoils, the remainder of the booty captured by the soldiers, came to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep and goats,	32 E la preda fatta dall'esercito fu secento settanta cinque mila pecore,
33 seventy-two thousand head of cattle,	33 Settanta due mila buoi,
34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,	34 Sessantun mila asini:
35 and in persons, women who had never slept with a man, thirty-two thousand in al .	35 Trenta due mila persone di sesso femminino, che eran vergini.
36 Half was assigned to those who had taken part in the war, namely three hundred and thirty-seventhousand five hundred sheep and goats,	36 E la metà fu data a quelli che erano stati alla battaglia, trecento trenta sette milacinquecento pecore:
37 of which Yahweh's portion was six hundred and seventy-five,	37 Delle quali si serbarono per la porzione del Signore secento sessanta cinque pecore.
38 thirty-six thousand head of cattle, of which Yahweh's portion was seventy-two,	38 E de' trenta sei mila bovi si serbarono settanta due bovi:
39 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, of which Yahweh's portion was sixty-one,	39 De' trenta mila cinquecento asini, asini sessantuno:
40 and sixteen thousand persons, of which Yahweh's portion was thirty-two.	40 Delle sedici mila persone furono assegnate per la porzione del Signore trentadue persone.
41 Moses gave the priest Eleazar the portion set aside for Yahweh, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.	41 E Mosè secondo l'ordine ricevuto diede ad Eleazaro sacerdote il suo numero delle primiziedel Signore,
42 As for the half coming to the Israelites which Moses had separated from that of the combatants,	42 Tolte da quella metà, che era stata assegnata a' figliuoli d'Israele, che erano stati allaguerra:
43 this half, the community's share, came to three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundredsheep and goats,	43 E dall'altra metà, che era toccata al restante della moltitudine, vale a dire dalle trecentotrenta sette mila cinquecento pecore,
44 thirty-six thousand head of cattle,	44 E da' trentasei mila buoi,
45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys	45 E da' trenta mila cinquecento asini,
46 and sixteen thousand persons.	46 E da' sedici mila uomini,
47 From this half, the Israelites' share, Moses took one out of every fifty, human and animal, and gavethem to the Levites who were responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.	47 Tolse Mosè un capo per ogni cinquanta, e li diede a' Leviti, che vegliavano al servigio deltabernacolo del Signore, come avea ordinato il Signore.
48 The officers of the thousands who had fought the campaign, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, came to Moses	48 E appressatisi a Mosè i capi dell'esercito, e i tribuni, e i centurioni, dissero:
49 and said, 'Your servants have numbered the soldiers under their command: none of our men ismissing.	49 Noi servi tuoi abbiam contato il numero de' combattenti, che avevamo sotto di noi: e non nemanca neppur uno.
50 So, as an offering for Yahweh, we have brought what each of us has found in the way of goldornaments, armlets and bracelets, rings, earrings and breastplates, to make expiation for ourselves beforeYahweh.'	50 Per questa ragione noi offeriam ciascheduno in dono al Signore tutto l'oro, che abbiampotuto trovar nella preda, cintoli, e braccialetti, anelli, e orecchini, e vezzi, affinchétu preghi il Signore per noi.
51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, al this jewel ery.	51 E Mosè ed EIeazaro sacerdote riceverono tutto l'oro lavorato in diverse guise,
52 This portion of gold given to Yahweh by the commanders of the thousands and commanders of thehundreds amounted to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.	52 Offerto da' tribuni, e da' centurioni in peso di sedici mila settecento cinquanta sicli;
53 Each of the soldiers took his own booty.	53 (Perocché quello che ciascuno nel saccomanno avea pigliato, era suo).
54 But Moses and the priest Eleazar, having accepted the gold from the commanders of the thousandsand commanders of the hundreds, brought it into the Tent of Meeting, to be a reminder of the Israelites beforeYahweh.	54 E lo presero, e lo portarono nel tabernacolo del testimonio per istarvi come monumento de'figliuoli d'Israele dinanzi al Signore.
