1 The Israelites then set out and pitched their camp in the Plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan oppositeJericho.	1 Poi gli Israeliti partirono e si accamparono nelle steppe di Moab, oltre il Giordano di Gerico.
2 Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites,	2 Balak, figlio di Sippor, vide quanto Israele aveva fatto agli Amorrei,
3 and Moab was terrified of the people, because there were so many of them. Moab was afraid of theIsraelites;	3 e Moab ebbe grande paura di questo popolo, che era così numeroso; Moab fu preso da spavento di fronte agli Israeliti.
4 he said to the elders of Midian, 'This horde wil soon have cropped everything round us as closely asan ox crops grass in the countryside.' Now Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at the time.	4 Quindi Moab disse agli anziani di Madian: «Ora questa assemblea divorerà quanto è intorno a noi, come il bue divora l’erba dei campi». Balak, figlio di Sippor, era in quel tempo re di Moab.
5 He sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor, at Pethor on the River, in the territory of theAmawites, saying, 'Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside; they have halted at myvery door.	5 Egli mandò messaggeri a Balaam, figlio di Beor, a Petor, che sta sul fiume, nel territorio dei figli di Amau, per chiamarlo e dirgli: «Ecco, un popolo è uscito dall’Egitto; ha ricoperto la faccia della terra e si è stabilito di fronte a me.
6 I beg you come and curse this people for me, for they are stronger than I am. We may then be able todefeat them and drive them out of the country. For this I know: anyone you bless is blessed, anyone you curse isaccursed.'	6 Ora dunque, vieni e maledici questo popolo per me, poiché esso è più potente di me. Forse riuscirò a batterlo, per scacciarlo dalla terra; perché io lo so: colui che tu benedici è benedetto e colui che tu maledici è maledetto».
7 The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian set out, taking the fee for the divination with them. Theyfound Balaam and gave him Balak's message.	7 Gli anziani di Moab e gli anziani di Madian partirono con in mano il compenso per l’oracolo. Arrivarono da Balaam e gli riferirono le parole di Balak.
8 He said to them, 'Stay the night here, and I wil answer as Yahweh directs me.' So the chiefs of Moabstayed with Balaam.	8 Balaam disse loro: «Alloggiate qui stanotte e vi darò la risposta secondo quanto mi dirà il Signore». I capi di Moab si fermarono da Balaam.
9 God came to Balaam and said, 'Who are these men staying with you?'	9 Ora Dio venne da Balaam e gli disse: «Chi sono questi uomini che stanno da te?».
10 Balaam said to God, 'Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent me this message,	10 Balaam rispose a Dio: «Balak, figlio di Sippor, re di Moab, mi ha mandato a dire:
11 "Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside. Come now and curse themfor me; I may then be able to defeat them and drive them out." '	11 “Ecco, il popolo che è uscito dall’Egitto ha ricoperto la superficie della terra. Ora vieni, maledicilo per me; forse riuscirò a batterlo e potrò scacciarlo”».
12 God said to Balaam, 'You are not to go with them. You are not to curse the people, for they areblessed.'	12 Dio disse a Balaam: «Tu non andrai con loro, non maledirai quel popolo, perché esso è benedetto».
13 In the morning Balaam got up and said to the chiefs sent by Balak, 'Go back to your country, forYahweh wil not let me go with you.'	13 Balaam si alzò la mattina e disse ai prìncipi di Balak: «Andatevene nella vostra terra, perché il Signore si è rifiutato di lasciarmi venire con voi».
14 So the chiefs of Moab got up, went back to Balak and said, 'Balaam refuses to come with us.'	14 I prìncipi di Moab si alzarono, tornarono da Balak e dissero: «Balaam si è rifiutato di venire con noi».
15 And again Balak sent chiefs, more numerous and more renowned than the first.	15 Allora Balak mandò di nuovo dei prìncipi, in maggior numero e più influenti di quelli di prima.
16 They came to Balaam and said, 'A message from Balak son of Zippor, "Now do not refuse to cometo me.	16 Vennero da Balaam e gli dissero: «Così dice Balak, figlio di Sippor: “Nulla ti trattenga dal venire da me,
17 I wil load you with honours and do whatever you say. I beg you come and curse this people for me."'	17 perché io ti colmerò di grandi onori e farò quanto mi dirai; vieni dunque e maledici per me questo popolo”».
18 In reply, Balaam said to Balak's envoys, 'Even if Balak gave me his house ful of silver and gold, Icould not go against the order of Yahweh my God in anything, great or smal .	18 Ma Balaam rispose e disse ai ministri di Balak: «Quand’anche Balak mi desse la sua casa piena d’argento e oro, non potrei trasgredire l’ordine del Signore, mio Dio, per fare cosa piccola o grande.
19 Now please stay the night here yourselves, and I wil learn what else Yahweh has to tel me.'	19 Nondimeno, trattenetevi qui anche voi stanotte, perché io sappia ciò che il Signore mi dirà ancora».
20 God came to Balaam during the night and said to him, 'Have not these men come to summon you?Get up, go with them, but do only what I tel you to do.'	20 La notte Dio venne da Balaam e gli disse: «Questi uomini non sono venuti a chiamarti? Àlzati dunque, e va’ con loro; ma farai ciò che io ti dirò».
21 Balaam got up and saddled his donkey and set out with the chiefs of Moab.	21 Balaam quindi si alzò di buon mattino, sellò l’asina e se ne andò con i capi di Moab.
22 His going kindled Yahweh's anger, and the angel of Yahweh took his stand on the road to bar hisway. Balaam was riding his donkey and his two servants were with him.	22 Ma l’ira di Dio si accese perché egli stava andando; l’angelo del Signore si pose sulla strada per ostacolarlo. Egli cavalcava la sua asina e aveva con sé due servitori.
23 Now the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, andshe turned off the road into the open country. Balaam then struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road.	23 L’asina vide l’angelo del Signore che stava ritto sulla strada con la spada sguainata in mano. E l’asina deviò dalla strada e cominciò ad andare per i campi. Balaam percosse l’asina per rimetterla sulla strada.
24 The angel of Yahweh then went and stood on a narrow path among the vineyards, with a wall to theright and a wal to the left.	24 Allora l’angelo del Signore si fermò in un sentiero infossato tra le vigne, che aveva un muro di qua e un muro di là.
25 The donkey saw the angel of Yahweh and scraped against the wal , scraping Balaam's foot againstit, so he struck her again.	25 L’asina vide l’angelo del Signore, si serrò al muro e strinse il piede di Balaam contro il muro e Balaam la percosse di nuovo.
26 The angel of Yahweh then moved and stood in a place so narrow that there was no room to passeither to right or left.	26 L’angelo del Signore passò di nuovo più avanti e si fermò in un luogo stretto, tanto stretto che non vi era modo di deviare né a destra né a sinistra.
27 When the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, she lay down under Balaam. Balaam flew into a rageand struck the donkey with his stick.	27 L’asina vide l’angelo del Signore e si accovacciò sotto Balaam. L’ira di Balaam si accese ed egli percosse l’asina con il bastone.
28 Yahweh then gave the donkey the power to talk, and she said to Balaam, 'What harm have I doneyou, for you to strike me three times like this?'	28 Allora il Signore aprì la bocca dell’asina ed essa disse a Balaam: «Che cosa ti ho fatto perché tu mi percuota già per la terza volta?».
29 Balaam answered the donkey, 'Because you have been making a fool of me! If I had been carryinga sword, I should have killed you by now.'	29 Balaam rispose all’asina: «Perché ti sei beffata di me! Ah, se avessi una spada in mano, ti ucciderei all’istante!».
30 The donkey said to Balaam, 'Am I not your donkey, and have I not been your mount all your life?Have I ever behaved like this with you before?' 'No,' he replied.	30 L’asina disse a Balaam: «Non sono io la tua asina, sulla quale hai cavalcato da quando hai iniziato fino ad oggi? Sono forse abituata ad agire così?». Ed egli rispose: «No».
31 Yahweh then opened Balaam's eyes and he saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with adrawn sword in his hand; and he bowed his head and threw himself on his face.	31 Allora il Signore aprì gli occhi di Balaam ed egli vide l’angelo del Signore che stava ritto sulla strada, con in mano la spada sguainata. Balaam si inginocchiò e si prostrò con la faccia a terra.
32 And the angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Why did you strike your donkey three times like that? I myselfhad come to bar your way; while I am here your road is blocked.	32 L’angelo del Signore gli disse: «Perché hai percosso la tua asina già tre volte? Ecco, io sono uscito a ostacolarti, perché il tuo cammino contro di me è rovinoso.
33 The donkey saw me and turned aside because of me three times. You are lucky she did turn aside,or I should have kil ed you by now, though I would have spared her.'	33 L’asina mi ha visto e ha deviato davanti a me per tre volte; se non avesse deviato davanti a me, certo ora io avrei già ucciso proprio te e lasciato in vita lei».
34 Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, 'I have sinned. I did not know you were standing in the road tostop me. But if what I am doing displeases you, I wil go home again.'	34 Allora Balaam disse all’angelo del Signore: «Ho peccato, perché non sapevo che tu ti fossi posto contro di me sul cammino; ora, se questo è male ai tuoi occhi, me ne tornerò indietro».
35 The angel of Yahweh said to Balaam, 'Go with these men, but say only what I tel you to say.' SoBalaam went on with the chiefs sent by Balak.	35 L’angelo del Signore disse a Balaam: «Va’ pure con questi uomini; ma dirai soltanto quello che io ti dirò». Balaam andò con i prìncipi di Balak.
36 Balak learned that Balaam was coming and went out to meet him, in the direction of Ar in Moab, atthe Arnon frontier on the country's furthest boundary.	36 Balak udì che Balaam arrivava e gli uscì incontro a Ir-Moab, che è sulla frontiera dell’Arnon, all’estremità del territorio.
37 Balak said to Balaam, 'Did I not send messengers to summon you? Why did you not come to me?Did you think, perhaps, I could confer no honours on you?'	37 Balak disse a Balaam: «Non avevo forse mandato a chiamarti con insistenza? Perché non sei venuto da me? Non sono forse in grado di trattarti con onore?».
38 Balaam said to Balak, 'I have come to you after al . I suppose you know I cannot say anything on myown? The words God puts into my mouth are what I shall say.'	38 Balaam rispose a Balak: «Ecco, sono venuto da te; ma ora posso forse dire qualsiasi cosa? La parola che Dio mi metterà in bocca, quella dirò».
39 Balaam set out with Balak. They came to Kiriath-Huzoth.	39 Balaam andò con Balak e giunsero a Kiriat-Cusòt.
40 Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and offered portions to Balaam and the chiefs who were with him.	40 Balak immolò bestiame grosso e minuto e mandò parte della carne a Balaam e ai prìncipi che erano con lui.
41 Next morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-Baal, from where he could see theedge of the camp.	41 La mattina Balak prese Balaam e lo fece salire a Bamòt-Baal, e di là vide un’estremità del popolo accampato.
