NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The Israelites then set out and pitched their camp in the Plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan oppositeJericho.	1 Luego los israelitas reanudaron la marcha y fueron a acampar en las estepas de Moab, el otro lado del Jordán, a la altura de Jericó.
2 Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites,	2 Balac, hijo de Sipor, vio todo lo que los israelitas habían hecho a los amorreos,
3 and Moab was terrified of the people, because there were so many of them. Moab was afraid of theIsraelites;	3 y los moabitas sintieron un gran temor a la vista de ese pueblo tan numeroso. Atemorizados por la presencia de los israelitas,
4 he said to the elders of Midian, 'This horde wil soon have cropped everything round us as closely asan ox crops grass in the countryside.' Now Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at the time.	4 los moabitas dijeron a los ancianos de Madián: «Ahora esta turba va a devorarlo todo a nuestro alrededor como un buey devora la hierba del campo». Entonces Balac, hijo de Sipor, que era rey de Moab en aquel tiempo,
5 He sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor, at Pethor on the River, in the territory of theAmawites, saying, 'Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside; they have halted at myvery door.	5 envió unos mensajeros a Balaam, hijo de Beor –que vivía en Petor, junto al Eufrates, en el país en Petor, junto al Eufrates, en el país de los descendientes de Amav– para que le hicieran esta invitación: «Un pueblo que salió de Egipto y cubrió toda la tierra se ha establecido frente a mí.
6 I beg you come and curse this people for me, for they are stronger than I am. We may then be able todefeat them and drive them out of the country. For this I know: anyone you bless is blessed, anyone you curse isaccursed.'	6 Ven, por favor, y maldíceme a este pueblo, porque es más fuerte que yo. Tal vez así podré derrotarlo y expulsarlo del país. Porque yo sé que el que tú bendices, queda bendecido, y el que maldices, queda maldecido».
7 The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian set out, taking the fee for the divination with them. Theyfound Balaam and gave him Balak's message.	7 Los ancianos de Moab y de Madián partieron, llevando la retribución para el adivino. Cuando se presentaron a Balaam y le transmitieron el mensaje de Balac,
8 He said to them, 'Stay the night here, and I wil answer as Yahweh directs me.' So the chiefs of Moabstayed with Balaam.	8 Balaam les respondió: «Pasen aquí la noche, y yo les daré la respuesta que el Señor me inspire». Entonces los jefes de Moab se quedaron con Balaam.
9 God came to Balaam and said, 'Who are these men staying with you?'	9 Pero Dios se manifestó a Balaam y le dijo: «¿Quiénes son esos hombres que están contigo?».
10 Balaam said to God, 'Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent me this message,	10 Balaam respondió a Dios: «Balac, hijo de Sipor, rey de Moab, me envió este mensaje:
11 "Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside. Come now and curse themfor me; I may then be able to defeat them and drive them out." '	11 «Aquí hay un pueblo que salió de Egipto y cubrió toda la tierra. Por eso, ven a maldecírmelo. Tal vez así podré combatir contra él y expulsarlo».
12 God said to Balaam, 'You are not to go with them. You are not to curse the people, for they areblessed.'	12 Dios dijo a Balaam: «No vayas con ellos ni maldigas a ese pueblo, porque está bendecido».
13 In the morning Balaam got up and said to the chiefs sent by Balak, 'Go back to your country, forYahweh wil not let me go with you.'	13 A la mañana siguiente, Balaam se levantó y dijo a los jefes enviados por Balac: «Vuélvanse a su país, porque el Señor me prohíbe acompañarlos».
14 So the chiefs of Moab got up, went back to Balak and said, 'Balaam refuses to come with us.'	14 Entonces los jefes de Moab partieron, y cuando estuvieron de regreso dijeron a Balac: «Balaam se niega a venir con nosotros».
15 And again Balak sent chiefs, more numerous and more renowned than the first.	15 Entonces Balac envió otros jefes, más numerosos y distinguidos que los primeros.
16 They came to Balaam and said, 'A message from Balak son of Zippor, "Now do not refuse to cometo me.	16 Ellos se presentaron a Balaam y le dijeron: «Así habla Balac, hijo de Sipor: «Por favor, no te niegues a venir en mi ayuda.
17 I wil load you with honours and do whatever you say. I beg you come and curse this people for me."'	17 Yo te colmaré de honores y haré todo lo que me digas. Te ruego que vengas y me maldigas a este pueblo».
18 In reply, Balaam said to Balak's envoys, 'Even if Balak gave me his house ful of silver and gold, Icould not go against the order of Yahweh my God in anything, great or smal .	18 Pero Balaam respondió a los servidores de Balac: «Aunque Balac me diera su casa llena de planta y oro, yo no podría transgredir, ni siguiera en lo más mínimo, una orden del Señor, mi Dios.
19 Now please stay the night here yourselves, and I wil learn what else Yahweh has to tel me.'	19 Con todo, quédense aquí también ustedes esta noche, y veré qué me dice el Señor esta vez».
20 God came to Balaam during the night and said to him, 'Have not these men come to summon you?Get up, go with them, but do only what I tel you to do.'	20 Durante la noche, Dios se manifestó a Balaam y le dijo: «Si esta gente ha venido a buscarte, puedes ir con ellos. Pero no hagas nada fuera de lo que yo te ordene».
21 Balaam got up and saddled his donkey and set out with the chiefs of Moab.	21 Por la mañana, Balaam se levantó, ensilló su asna y partió junto con los jefes de Moab.
22 His going kindled Yahweh's anger, and the angel of Yahweh took his stand on the road to bar hisway. Balaam was riding his donkey and his two servants were with him.	22 Pero su partida encendió la ira de Dios, y el Angel del Señor se interpuso en el camino para cerrarle el paso. Balaam iba montado en su asna y lo acompañaban dos muchachos.
23 Now the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, andshe turned off the road into the open country. Balaam then struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road.	23 Cuando el asna vio al Angel del Señor parado en el camino, con la espada desenvainada en su mano, se apartó y se fue por el campo. Pero Balaam la castigó para hacerla volver al camino.
24 The angel of Yahweh then went and stood on a narrow path among the vineyards, with a wall to theright and a wal to the left.	24 El Angel del Señor se paró entonces en un sendero angosto, que pasaba por los viñedos y estaba rodeado de los dos lados por un cerco.
25 The donkey saw the angel of Yahweh and scraped against the wal , scraping Balaam's foot againstit, so he struck her again.	25 Al verlo, el asna se fue contra el cerco y apretó el pie de Balaam que la castigó nuevamente.
26 The angel of Yahweh then moved and stood in a place so narrow that there was no room to passeither to right or left.	26 Una vez más, el Angel del Señor se adelantó y fue a colocarse en un lugar tan estrecho, que imposible desviarse a la derecha o a la izquierda.
27 When the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, she lay down under Balaam. Balaam flew into a rageand struck the donkey with his stick.	27 Cuando el asna lo vio, se echó al suelo debajo de Balaam, y este, enfurecido, la golpeó con su bastón.
28 Yahweh then gave the donkey the power to talk, and she said to Balaam, 'What harm have I doneyou, for you to strike me three times like this?'	28 Entonces el Señor abrió la boca del asna, y ella, dijo a Balaam: «¿Qué te hice para que me golpearas así tres veces?».
29 Balaam answered the donkey, 'Because you have been making a fool of me! If I had been carryinga sword, I should have killed you by now.'	29 «¡Te estás burlando de mí!, respondió Balaam. Si tuviera una espada en mi mano, te mataría ahora mismo».
30 The donkey said to Balaam, 'Am I not your donkey, and have I not been your mount all your life?Have I ever behaved like this with you before?' 'No,' he replied.	30 El asna le respondió: «¿Acaso yo no soy tu asna, la que siempre has montado hasta el día de hoy? ¿Acostumbro yo a tratarte de ese modo?». El respondió: «No».
31 Yahweh then opened Balaam's eyes and he saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with adrawn sword in his hand; and he bowed his head and threw himself on his face.	31 El Señor abrió los ojos de Balaam, y este vio al Angel del Señor parado en la camino, con la espada desenvainada en su mano; se inclinó y lo adoró con el rostro en tierra.
32 And the angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Why did you strike your donkey three times like that? I myselfhad come to bar your way; while I am here your road is blocked.	32 El Angel del Señor le dijo: «¿Por qué le has pegado tres veces a tu asna? Era yo el que te cerraba el paso, porque tu viaje me disgusta.
33 The donkey saw me and turned aside because of me three times. You are lucky she did turn aside,or I should have kil ed you by now, though I would have spared her.'	33 Ella me vio y se apartó de mí tres veces. Hizo muy bien en apartarse, porque de los contrario yo te hubiera matado, mientras que a ella la hubiera dejado con vida».
34 Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, 'I have sinned. I did not know you were standing in the road tostop me. But if what I am doing displeases you, I wil go home again.'	34 Balaam dijo al Angel del Señor: «He pecado, porque no sabía que tú estabas apostado delante de mí en el camino. Si esto te desagrada, ahora mismo regreso».
35 The angel of Yahweh said to Balaam, 'Go with these men, but say only what I tel you to say.' SoBalaam went on with the chiefs sent by Balak.	35 El Angel del Señor respondió a Balaam: «Ve con estos hombres, pero dirás solamente lo que yo te indique». Y Balaam se fue con los jefes que le había enviado Balac.
36 Balak learned that Balaam was coming and went out to meet him, in the direction of Ar in Moab, atthe Arnon frontier on the country's furthest boundary.	36 Cuando Balac supo que Balaam estaba por llegar, fue a encontrarlo en Ar Moab, sobre la frontera del Arnón, en el límite de su territorio,
37 Balak said to Balaam, 'Did I not send messengers to summon you? Why did you not come to me?Did you think, perhaps, I could confer no honours on you?'	37 y le dijo: «Yo te mandé a llamar urgentemente. ¿Por qué no querías venir? ¿Acaso no dispongo de medios para colmarte de honores?».
38 Balaam said to Balak, 'I have come to you after al . I suppose you know I cannot say anything on myown? The words God puts into my mouth are what I shall say.'	38 Entonces Balaam respondió a Balac: «Aquí me tienes. Pero, ¿qué puedo decir yo ahora? Sólo diré la palabra que Dios ponga en mi boca».
39 Balaam set out with Balak. They came to Kiriath-Huzoth.	39 Luego Balaam se fue con Balac. Llegados a Quiriat Jusot,
40 Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and offered portions to Balaam and the chiefs who were with him.	40 Balac inmoló vacas y ovejas y se las envió a Balaam y lo hizo subir a Bamot Baal, desde donde pudo ver a una parte del pueblo.
41 Next morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-Baal, from where he could see theedge of the camp.
