NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 The Israelites then set out and pitched their camp in the Plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan oppositeJericho.	1 Partiram os filhos de Israel e acamparam nas planícies de Moab, além do Jordão, defronte de Jericó.
2 Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites,	2 Balac, filho de Sefor, tinha visto tudo o que Israel fizera aos amorreus.
3 and Moab was terrified of the people, because there were so many of them. Moab was afraid of theIsraelites;	3 Moab teve um grande medo desse povo, porque era muito numeroso, e ficou aterrorizado diante dos israelitas.
4 he said to the elders of Midian, 'This horde wil soon have cropped everything round us as closely asan ox crops grass in the countryside.' Now Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at the time.	4 E disseram aos anciãos de Madiã: "Essa multidão vai devorar todos os nossos arredores como os bois devoram a erva do campo." Balac, filho de Sefor, reinava então em Moab.
5 He sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor, at Pethor on the River, in the territory of theAmawites, saying, 'Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside; they have halted at myvery door.	5 Mandou, pois, mensageiros a Balaão, filho de Beor, em Petor, sobre o rio, na terra dos filhos de Amon, para que o chamassem e lhe dissessem: "Há aqui um povo que saiu do Egito, o qual cobre a face da terra, e estabeleceu-se diante de mim.
6 I beg you come and curse this people for me, for they are stronger than I am. We may then be able todefeat them and drive them out of the country. For this I know: anyone you bless is blessed, anyone you curse isaccursed.'	6 Rogo-te que venhas e amaldiçoes esse povo, pois é muito mais poderoso do que eu. Talvez assim eu possa batê-lo e expulsá-lo de minha terra. Eu sei que será bendito o que abençoares e maldito o que amaldiçoares."
7 The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian set out, taking the fee for the divination with them. Theyfound Balaam and gave him Balak's message.	7 Os anciãos de Moab e de Madiã partiram levando consigo o preço da adivinhação. Chegando junto de Balaão, referiram-lhe as palavras de Balac.
8 He said to them, 'Stay the night here, and I wil answer as Yahweh directs me.' So the chiefs of Moabstayed with Balaam.	8 Balaão respondeu: "Passai a noite aqui, e dar-vos-ei a resposta que o Senhor me indicar." Ficaram, pois, os chefes de Moab em casa de Balaão.
9 God came to Balaam and said, 'Who are these men staying with you?'	9 Deus veio a Balaão e disse-lhe: "Quem é essa gente que tens em tua casa?"
10 Balaam said to God, 'Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent me this message,	10 Balaão respondeu a Deus: "É Balac, filho de Sefor, rei de Moab, que me manda dizer:
11 "Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside. Come now and curse themfor me; I may then be able to defeat them and drive them out." '	11 há aqui um povo que saiu do Egito, o qual cobre a superfície da terra. Vem, pois, e amaldiçoa-o. Talvez assim possa eu batê-lo e expulsá-lo da terra."
12 God said to Balaam, 'You are not to go with them. You are not to curse the people, for they areblessed.'	12 Disse Deus a Balaão: "Não irás com eles, e não amaldiçoarás esse povo, porque é bendito."
13 In the morning Balaam got up and said to the chiefs sent by Balak, 'Go back to your country, forYahweh wil not let me go with you.'	13 Levantando-se Balaão pela manhã, disse aos chefes enviados por Balac: "Voltai para a vossa terra, pois o Senhor me proibiu de ir convosco."
14 So the chiefs of Moab got up, went back to Balak and said, 'Balaam refuses to come with us.'	14 Os chefes de Moab retomaram o caminho e voltaram para junto de Balac: "Balaão, disseram-lhe eles, recusou vir conosco."
15 And again Balak sent chiefs, more numerous and more renowned than the first.	15 Balac mandou-lhe de novo outros chefes, mais numerosos e mais importantes que os primeiros.
16 They came to Balaam and said, 'A message from Balak son of Zippor, "Now do not refuse to cometo me.	16 Chegados junto a Balaão, disseram-lhe: "Eis a mensagem de Balac, filho de Sefor: rogo-te que não recuses vir ter comigo.
17 I wil load you with honours and do whatever you say. I beg you come and curse this people for me."'	17 Cumular-te-ei de honras e farei tudo o que me disseres. Vem amaldiçoar esse povo."
18 In reply, Balaam said to Balak's envoys, 'Even if Balak gave me his house ful of silver and gold, Icould not go against the order of Yahweh my God in anything, great or smal .	18 "Ainda que o vosso senhor me desse a sua casa cheia de prata e de ouro, respondeu Balaão aos servos de Balac, eu não poderia transgredir a ordem do Senhor meu Deus, nem pouco nem muito, no que quer que seja.
19 Now please stay the night here yourselves, and I wil learn what else Yahweh has to tel me.'	19 Todavia, passai ainda esta noite aqui, para que eu saiba o que o Senhor me responderá ainda desta vez."
20 God came to Balaam during the night and said to him, 'Have not these men come to summon you?Get up, go with them, but do only what I tel you to do.'	20 Deus veio a Balaão durante a noite e disse-lhe: "Já que essa gente te veio chamar, levanta-te e vai com eles. Mas só farás o que eu te disser."
21 Balaam got up and saddled his donkey and set out with the chiefs of Moab.	21 Balaão levantou-se de manhã, selou sua jumenta, e partiu com os chefes de Moab.
22 His going kindled Yahweh's anger, and the angel of Yahweh took his stand on the road to bar hisway. Balaam was riding his donkey and his two servants were with him.	22 O Senhor irritou-se com sua partida, e o anjo do Senhor pôs-se-lhe no caminho como obstáculo. Balaão cavalgava em sua jumenta, acompanhado de seus dois servos.
23 Now the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, andshe turned off the road into the open country. Balaam then struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road.	23 A jumenta, vendo o anjo do Senhor postado no caminho, com uma espada desembainhada na mão, desviou-se e seguiu pelo campo; o adivinho a fustigava para fazê-la voltar ao caminho.
24 The angel of Yahweh then went and stood on a narrow path among the vineyards, with a wall to theright and a wal to the left.	24 Então o anjo do Senhor pôs-se num caminho estreito que passava por entre as vinhas, com um muro de cada lado.
25 The donkey saw the angel of Yahweh and scraped against the wal , scraping Balaam's foot againstit, so he struck her again.	25 Vendo-o, a jumenta coseu-se com o muro, ferindo contra ele o pé de Balaão, que a fustigou de novo.
26 The angel of Yahweh then moved and stood in a place so narrow that there was no room to passeither to right or left.	26 O anjo do Senhor deteve-se de novo mais adiante em uma passagem estreita, onde não havia espaço para se desviar nem para a direita nem para a esquerda.
27 When the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, she lay down under Balaam. Balaam flew into a rageand struck the donkey with his stick.	27 A jumenta, ao vê-lo, deitou-se debaixo de Balaão, o qual, encolerizado, a fustigava mais fortemente com seu bastão.
28 Yahweh then gave the donkey the power to talk, and she said to Balaam, 'What harm have I doneyou, for you to strike me three times like this?'	28 Então o Senhor abriu a boca da jumenta, que disse a Balaão: "Que te fiz eu? Por que me bateste já três vezes?"
29 Balaam answered the donkey, 'Because you have been making a fool of me! If I had been carryinga sword, I should have killed you by now.'	29 Porque zombaste de mim, respondeu ele. Ah, se eu tivesse uma espada na mão! Ter-te-ia já matado!"
30 The donkey said to Balaam, 'Am I not your donkey, and have I not been your mount all your life?Have I ever behaved like this with you before?' 'No,' he replied.	30 A jumenta replicou: "Acaso não sou eu a tua jumenta, a qual montaste até o dia de hoje? Tenho eu porventura o costume de proceder assim contigo?" "Não", respondeu ele.
31 Yahweh then opened Balaam's eyes and he saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with adrawn sword in his hand; and he bowed his head and threw himself on his face.	31 Então o Senhor abriu os olhos de Balaão, e ele viu o anjo do Senhor que estava no caminho com a espada desembainhada na mão. Inclinou-se e prostrou-se com a face por terra.
32 And the angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Why did you strike your donkey three times like that? I myselfhad come to bar your way; while I am here your road is blocked.	32 "Por que, disse-lhe o anjo do Senhor, feriste três vezes a tua jumenta? Eu vim opor-me a ti, porque segues um caminho que te leva ao precipício.
33 The donkey saw me and turned aside because of me three times. You are lucky she did turn aside,or I should have kil ed you by now, though I would have spared her.'	33 Vendo-me, a tua jumenta desviou-se por três vezes diante de mim. Se ela não o tivesse feito, ter-te-ia já matado, e ela ficaria viva."
34 Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, 'I have sinned. I did not know you were standing in the road tostop me. But if what I am doing displeases you, I wil go home again.'	34 Balaão disse ao anjo do Senhor: "Pequei. Eu não sabia que estavas postado no caminho para deter-me. Se minha viagem te desagrada, voltarei."
35 The angel of Yahweh said to Balaam, 'Go with these men, but say only what I tel you to say.' SoBalaam went on with the chiefs sent by Balak.	35 "Segue esses homens, respondeu-lhe o anjo do Senhor, mas cuida de só proferir as palavras que eu te disser." E Balaão partiu com os chefes de Balac.
36 Balak learned that Balaam was coming and went out to meet him, in the direction of Ar in Moab, atthe Arnon frontier on the country's furthest boundary.	36 Quando Balac soube de sua chegada, subiu-lhe ao encontro até a cidade de Moab, na fronteira do Arnon, na extremidade daquela terra,
37 Balak said to Balaam, 'Did I not send messengers to summon you? Why did you not come to me?Did you think, perhaps, I could confer no honours on you?'	37 e disse-lhe: "Mandei mensageiros chamar-te. Por que não vieste logo? Não posso eu tratar-te com honras?"
38 Balaam said to Balak, 'I have come to you after al . I suppose you know I cannot say anything on myown? The words God puts into my mouth are what I shall say.'	38 "Eis-me aqui, respondeu Balaão; mas agora ser-me-á possível dizer algo de mim mesmo? Só direi o que Deus me puser na boca, nada mais."
39 Balaam set out with Balak. They came to Kiriath-Huzoth.	39 E partiram os dois para Quiriat-Chutsot.
40 Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and offered portions to Balaam and the chiefs who were with him.	40 Balac imolou em sacrifício bois e ovelhas, dos quais mandou algumas porções a Balaão e aos chefes que o acompanhavam.
41 Next morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-Baal, from where he could see theedge of the camp.	41 No dia seguinte pela manhã, Balac tomou consigo o adivinho e levou-o a Bamot-Baal, de onde se podiam ver as últimas linhas do acampamento de Israel.
