NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 The Israelites then set out and pitched their camp in the Plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan oppositeJericho.	1 - E partitisi, vennero ad accamparsi nelle pianure di Moab, dove, dall'altra parte del Giordano, trovasi Gerico.
2 Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites,	2 Ora, Balac figlio di Sefor, vedendo tutto quel che Israele aveva fatto all'Amorreo,
3 and Moab was terrified of the people, because there were so many of them. Moab was afraid of theIsraelites;	3 e come i Moabiti n'avessero paura, e non potessero reggere al suo impeto,
4 he said to the elders of Midian, 'This horde wil soon have cropped everything round us as closely asan ox crops grass in the countryside.' Now Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at the time.	4 disse ai seniori di Madian: «Questo popolo divorerà tutti gli abitatori di queste contrade, come un bove suol brucare l'erbe sino alle radici». Egli era allora il re di Moab.
5 He sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor, at Pethor on the River, in the territory of theAmawites, saying, 'Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside; they have halted at myvery door.	5 Mandò dunque degli ambasciatori a Balaam indovino, figlio di Beor, che abitava lungo il fiume della terra de' figli d'Ammon, perchè lo invitassero dicendogli: «È uscito dall'Egitto un popolo, che ha coperto la faccia della terra, ed ha preso stanza di contro a me;
6 I beg you come and curse this people for me, for they are stronger than I am. We may then be able todefeat them and drive them out of the country. For this I know: anyone you bless is blessed, anyone you curse isaccursed.'	6 vieni dunque a maledir questo popolo che è più forte di me, per vedere se poi io potessi sconfiggerlo, e cacciarlo dalla mia terra; so infatti che quegli che tu benedirai sarà benedetto, e maledetto quegli contro al quale avrai scagliato maledizioni».
7 The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian set out, taking the fee for the divination with them. Theyfound Balaam and gave him Balak's message.	7 Partirono dunque i seniori di Moab e gli anziani di Madian, portando seco la mercede per l'indovino. Venuti dov'era Balaam, e riferitegli le parole tutte di Balac,
8 He said to them, 'Stay the night here, and I wil answer as Yahweh directs me.' So the chiefs of Moabstayed with Balaam.	8 quegli rispose: «Restate qui stanotte; vi risponderò secondo quello che mi dirà il Signore». Mentre quelli erano in casa di Balaam, venne a lui il Signore, e gli disse:
9 God came to Balaam and said, 'Who are these men staying with you?'	9 «Che cosa vogliono questi uomini in casa tua?».
10 Balaam said to God, 'Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent me this message,	10 Rispose: «Balac figlio di Sefor, re dei Moabiti, li ha mandati a me,
11 "Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside. Come now and curse themfor me; I may then be able to defeat them and drive them out." '	11 a dirmi: -Ecco un popolo uscito dall'Egitto ha ricoperto la faccia della terra; vieni e maledicilo, per vedere se io potessi combatterlo e scacciarlo-».
12 God said to Balaam, 'You are not to go with them. You are not to curse the people, for they areblessed.'	12 Disse il Signore a Balaam: «Non andar con loro, e non maledire quel popolo, perchè è benedetto».
13 In the morning Balaam got up and said to the chiefs sent by Balak, 'Go back to your country, forYahweh wil not let me go with you.'	13 Levatosi dunque al mattino, disse a que' capi: «Tornate al vostro paese, perchè il Signore m'ha proibito di venire con voi».
14 So the chiefs of Moab got up, went back to Balak and said, 'Balaam refuses to come with us.'	14 Tornati i capi, dissero a Balac: «Balaam non ha voluto venire con noi».
15 And again Balak sent chiefs, more numerous and more renowned than the first.	15 Allora ne mandò parecchi altri, più ragguardevoli di quelli mandati prima.
16 They came to Balaam and said, 'A message from Balak son of Zippor, "Now do not refuse to cometo me.	16 I quali, giunti dinanzi a Balaam, gli dissero: «Balac figlio di Sefor ti dice: - Non tardare a venir da me;
17 I wil load you with honours and do whatever you say. I beg you come and curse this people for me."'	17 son pronto a farti onore, e ti darò qualunque cosa vorrai; vieni, e maledici questo popolo -».
18 In reply, Balaam said to Balak's envoys, 'Even if Balak gave me his house ful of silver and gold, Icould not go against the order of Yahweh my God in anything, great or smal .	18 Balaam rispose: «Se Balac mi desse la casa sua piena d'argento e d'oro, non potrei cambiar la parola del Signore Dio mio, e dire di più o di meno.
19 Now please stay the night here yourselves, and I wil learn what else Yahweh has to tel me.'	19 Ve prego di rimaner qui anche stanotte, ch'io possa sapere che cosa di nuovo mi risponda il Signore».
20 God came to Balaam during the night and said to him, 'Have not these men come to summon you?Get up, go with them, but do only what I tel you to do.'	20 Venne dunque Dio a Balaam, la notte, e gli disse: «Se questi uomini son venuti a chiamarti, levati e va' con loro, purchè però tu faccia quello che ti comanderò».
21 Balaam got up and saddled his donkey and set out with the chiefs of Moab.	21 Balaam si alzò al mattino, sellò la sua asina, e partì con loro.
22 His going kindled Yahweh's anger, and the angel of Yahweh took his stand on the road to bar hisway. Balaam was riding his donkey and his two servants were with him.	22 Ma il Signore si sdegnò; e l'angelo del Signore si mise sulla strada di contro a Balaam, che cavalcava l'asina, ed aveva due servi con sè.
23 Now the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, andshe turned off the road into the open country. Balaam then struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road.	23 L'asina vedendo l'angelo con una spada sguainata in mezzo alla via, uscì dalla strada e si mise pei campi. Balaam la picchiava, volendola ricondurre sulla via;
24 The angel of Yahweh then went and stood on a narrow path among the vineyards, with a wall to theright and a wal to the left.	24 allora l'angelo si fermò in uno stretto passo fra due muri a secco che ricingevano le vigne.
25 The donkey saw the angel of Yahweh and scraped against the wal , scraping Balaam's foot againstit, so he struck her again.	25 L'asina vedendolo si strinse al muro, e serrò [contro il muro] il piede del suo cavalcatore. Questi si mise di nuovo a picchiarla;
26 The angel of Yahweh then moved and stood in a place so narrow that there was no room to passeither to right or left.	26 ma l'angelo andò a porsi in un passo più stretto, dove non ci si poteva scansare nè a destra nè a sinistra, e gli si pose di faccia.
27 When the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, she lay down under Balaam. Balaam flew into a rageand struck the donkey with his stick.	27 L'asina, visto l'angelo fermo di contro a lei, cadde sotto i piedi del suo cavalcatore, che incollerito la picchiava più forte sui fianchi con un bastone.
28 Yahweh then gave the donkey the power to talk, and she said to Balaam, 'What harm have I doneyou, for you to strike me three times like this?'	28 Allora il Signore aprì la bocca dell'asina, la quale disse: «Che t'ho io fatto? Perchè mi batti già per la terza volta?».
29 Balaam answered the donkey, 'Because you have been making a fool of me! If I had been carryinga sword, I should have killed you by now.'	29 Balaam rispose: «Perchè te lo sei meritato, e ti sei burlata di me. Così avessi una spada, che ti ammazzerei».
30 The donkey said to Balaam, 'Am I not your donkey, and have I not been your mount all your life?Have I ever behaved like this with you before?' 'No,' he replied.	30 Disse l'asina: «Non sono io il tuo animale, che hai sempre cavalcato insino ad oggi? Dimmi quando mai t'ho fatto una cosa simile». Ed egli disse: «No, mai».
31 Yahweh then opened Balaam's eyes and he saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with adrawn sword in his hand; and he bowed his head and threw himself on his face.	31 In un subito il Signore aprì gli occhi di Balaam ed egli vide l'angelo in piedi sulla via con la spada sguainata: e l'adorò prostrato per terra.
32 And the angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Why did you strike your donkey three times like that? I myselfhad come to bar your way; while I am here your road is blocked.	32 E l'angelo a lui: «Perchè batti per la terza volta la tua asina? Io son venuto per oppormi a te, perchè la tua strada è perversa ed a me contraria;
33 The donkey saw me and turned aside because of me three times. You are lucky she did turn aside,or I should have kil ed you by now, though I would have spared her.'	33 se l'asina non si fosse scansata nella strada per darmi luogo quando l'attraversavo, ti avrei ucciso lasciando lei in vita».
34 Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, 'I have sinned. I did not know you were standing in the road tostop me. But if what I am doing displeases you, I wil go home again.'	34 Disse Balaam: «Ho peccato, non sapendo che tu stavi contro di me; ma ora, se ti dispiace che io vada, tornerò indietro».
35 The angel of Yahweh said to Balaam, 'Go with these men, but say only what I tel you to say.' SoBalaam went on with the chiefs sent by Balak.	35 Disse l'angelo: «Va' pure con loro: ma bada di non dir altro che quello che io ti comanderò». Andò dunque Balaam con quei principi.
36 Balak learned that Balaam was coming and went out to meet him, in the direction of Ar in Moab, atthe Arnon frontier on the country's furthest boundary.	36 Quando Balac lo seppe, gli uscì incontro, in una città dei Moabiti posta agli ultimi confini dell'Arnon.
37 Balak said to Balaam, 'Did I not send messengers to summon you? Why did you not come to me?Did you think, perhaps, I could confer no honours on you?'	37 E disse a Balaam: «Mandai ambasciatori a chiamarti; perchè non venisti subito? Forse ch'io non ho come ricompensare la tua venuta?».
38 Balaam said to Balak, 'I have come to you after al . I suppose you know I cannot say anything on myown? The words God puts into my mouth are what I shall say.'	38 Ed egli rispose: «Eccomi: ma potrò io dir altro, fuori di quello che Dio mi porrà sulla bocca?».
39 Balaam set out with Balak. They came to Kiriath-Huzoth.	39 S'incamminarono dunque insieme, e vennero in una città che era agli ultimi confini del regno di Balac.
40 Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and offered portions to Balaam and the chiefs who were with him.	40 Ed avendo questi uccisi de' bovi e delle pecore, li mandò in dono a Balaam ed ai principi ch'eran con lui.
41 Next morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-Baal, from where he could see theedge of the camp.	41 Fattosi poi giorno, lo condusse sulle alture di Baal, e gli fece vedere l'ultima parte del popolo [di Israele].
