NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 The Israelites then set out and pitched their camp in the Plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan oppositeJericho.	1 Luego partieron los israelitas y acamparon en las Estepas de Moab, al otro lado del Jordán, a la altura de Jericó.
2 Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites,	2 Vio Balaq, hijo de Sippor, todo lo que había hecho Israel con los amorreos
3 and Moab was terrified of the people, because there were so many of them. Moab was afraid of theIsraelites;	3 y se estremeció Moab ante pueblo, pues era muy numeroso. Tuvo miedo Moab de los israelitas
4 he said to the elders of Midian, 'This horde wil soon have cropped everything round us as closely asan ox crops grass in the countryside.' Now Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at the time.	4 y dijo a los ancianos de Madián: «Ahora veréis cómo esa multitud va a devastarlo todo a nuestro alrededor, como devasta el buey la hierba del campo.» Balaq, hijo de Sippor, era rey de Moab por aquel tiempo.
5 He sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor, at Pethor on the River, in the territory of theAmawites, saying, 'Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside; they have halted at myvery door.	5 Envió mensajeros a buscar a Balaam, hijo de Beor, a Petor del Río, en tierra de los hijos de Ammav, para decirle: «He aquí que el pueblo que ha salido de Egipto ha cubierto la superficie de la tierra y se ha establecido frente a mí.
6 I beg you come and curse this people for me, for they are stronger than I am. We may then be able todefeat them and drive them out of the country. For this I know: anyone you bless is blessed, anyone you curse isaccursed.'	6 Ven, pues, por favor, maldíceme a ese pueblo, pues es más fuerte que yo, a ver si puedo vencerle y lo arrojo del país. Pues sé que el que tú bendices queda bendito y el que maldices, maldito.»
7 The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian set out, taking the fee for the divination with them. Theyfound Balaam and gave him Balak's message.	7 Fueron los ancianos de Moab y los ancianos de Madián, con la paga del vaticinio en sus manos. Llegaron donde Balaam y le dijeron las palabras de Balaq.
8 He said to them, 'Stay the night here, and I wil answer as Yahweh directs me.' So the chiefs of Moabstayed with Balaam.	8 El les contestó: «Pasad aquí la noche y os responderé según lo que me diga Yahveh.» Los jefes de Moab se quedaron en casa de Balaam.
9 God came to Balaam and said, 'Who are these men staying with you?'	9 Entró Yahveh donde Balaam y le dijo: «¿Qué hombres son ésos que están en tu casa?»
10 Balaam said to God, 'Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent me this message,	10 Le respondió Balaam a Dios: «Balaq, hijo de Sippor, rey de Moab, me ha enviado a decir:
11 "Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside. Come now and curse themfor me; I may then be able to defeat them and drive them out." '	11 El pueblo que ha salido de Egipto ha cubierto la superficie de la tierra. Ven, pues, maldícemelo, a ver si puedo vencerlo y expulsarlo.»
12 God said to Balaam, 'You are not to go with them. You are not to curse the people, for they areblessed.'	12 Pero dijo Dios a Balaam: «No vayas con ellos, no maldigas a ese pueblo porque es bendito.»
13 In the morning Balaam got up and said to the chiefs sent by Balak, 'Go back to your country, forYahweh wil not let me go with you.'	13 Se levantó Balaam de madrugada y dijo a los jefes de Balaq: «Id a vuestra tierra, porque Yahveh no quiere dejarme ir con vosotros.»
14 So the chiefs of Moab got up, went back to Balak and said, 'Balaam refuses to come with us.'	14 Se levantaron, pues, los jefes de Moab, volvieron donde Balaq y le dijeron: «Balaam se ha negado a venir con nosotros.»
15 And again Balak sent chiefs, more numerous and more renowned than the first.	15 Balaq envió otra vez jefes en mayor número y más ilustres que los anteriores.
16 They came to Balaam and said, 'A message from Balak son of Zippor, "Now do not refuse to cometo me.	16 Fueron donde Balaam y le dijeron: «Así dice Balaq, hijo de Sippor: No rehúses, por favor, venir a mí,
17 I wil load you with honours and do whatever you say. I beg you come and curse this people for me."'	17 que te recompensaré con grandes honores y haré todo lo que me digas. Ven, por favor, y maldíceme a ese pueblo.»
18 In reply, Balaam said to Balak's envoys, 'Even if Balak gave me his house ful of silver and gold, Icould not go against the order of Yahweh my God in anything, great or smal .	18 Respondió Balaam a los siervos de Balaq: «Aunque me diera Balaq su casa llena de plata y oro, no podría traspasar la orden de Yahveh mi Dios en nada, ni poco ni mucho.
19 Now please stay the night here yourselves, and I wil learn what else Yahweh has to tel me.'	19 Quedaos aquí también vosotros esta noche y averiguaré qué más me dice Yahveh.»
20 God came to Balaam during the night and said to him, 'Have not these men come to summon you?Get up, go with them, but do only what I tel you to do.'	20 Entró Dios donde Balaam por la noche y le dijo: «¿No han venido esos hombres a llamarte? Levántate y vete con ellos. Pero has de cumplir la palabra que yo te diga.»
21 Balaam got up and saddled his donkey and set out with the chiefs of Moab.	21 Se levantó Balaam de madrugada, aparejó su asna y se fue con los jefes de Moab.
22 His going kindled Yahweh's anger, and the angel of Yahweh took his stand on the road to bar hisway. Balaam was riding his donkey and his two servants were with him.	22 Cuando iba, se encendió la ira de Yahveh y el Ángel de Yahveh se puso en el camino para estorbarle. El montaba la burra y sus dos muchachos iban con él.
23 Now the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, andshe turned off the road into the open country. Balaam then struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road.	23 La burra vio al Ángel de Yahveh plantado en el camino, la espada desenvainada en la mano. La burra se apartó del camino y se fue a campo traviesa. Balaam pegó a la burra para hacerla volver al camino.
24 The angel of Yahweh then went and stood on a narrow path among the vineyards, with a wall to theright and a wal to the left.	24 Pero el Ángel de Yahveh se puso en un sendero entre las viñas, con una pared a un lado y otra a otro.
25 The donkey saw the angel of Yahweh and scraped against the wal , scraping Balaam's foot againstit, so he struck her again.	25 Al ver la burra al Ángel de Yahveh, se arrimó a la pared y raspó el pie de Balaam contra la pared. El le pegó otra vez.
26 The angel of Yahweh then moved and stood in a place so narrow that there was no room to passeither to right or left.	26 Volvió el Ángel de Yahveh a cambiar de sitio, y se puso en un paso estrecho, donde no había espacio para apartarse ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda.
27 When the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, she lay down under Balaam. Balaam flew into a rageand struck the donkey with his stick.	27 Vio la burra al Ángel de Yahveh y se echó con Balaam encima. Balaam se enfureció y pegó a la burra con un palo.
28 Yahweh then gave the donkey the power to talk, and she said to Balaam, 'What harm have I doneyou, for you to strike me three times like this?'	28 Entonces Yahveh abrió la boca de la burra, que dijo a Balaam: «¿qué te he hecho yo para que me pegues con ésta ya tres veces?»
29 Balaam answered the donkey, 'Because you have been making a fool of me! If I had been carryinga sword, I should have killed you by now.'	29 Respondió Balaam a la burra: «Porque te has burlado de mí. Ojalá tuviera una espada en la mano; ahora mismo te mataba.»
30 The donkey said to Balaam, 'Am I not your donkey, and have I not been your mount all your life?Have I ever behaved like this with you before?' 'No,' he replied.	30 Respondió la burra a Balaam: «¿No soy yo tu burra, y me has montado desde siempre hasta el día de hoy? ¿Acaso acostumbro a portarme así contigo?» Respondió él: «No.»
31 Yahweh then opened Balaam's eyes and he saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with adrawn sword in his hand; and he bowed his head and threw himself on his face.	31 Entonces abrió Yahveh los ojos de Balaam, que vio al Ángel de Yahveh, de pie en el camino, la espada desenvainada en la mano; y se inclinó y postró rostro en tierra.
32 And the angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Why did you strike your donkey three times like that? I myselfhad come to bar your way; while I am here your road is blocked.	32 El Ángel de Yahveh le dijo; «¿Por qué has pegado a tu burra con ésta ya tres veces? He sido yo el que he salido a cerrarte el paso, porque delante de mí se tuerce el camino.
33 The donkey saw me and turned aside because of me three times. You are lucky she did turn aside,or I should have kil ed you by now, though I would have spared her.'	33 La burra me ha visto y se ha apartado de mí tres veces. Gracias a que se ha desviado, porque si no, para ahora te habría matado y a ella la habría dejado con vida.»
34 Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, 'I have sinned. I did not know you were standing in the road tostop me. But if what I am doing displeases you, I wil go home again.'	34 Dijo entonces Balaam al Ángel de Yahveh: «He pecado, pues no sabía que tú te habías puesto en mi camino. Pero ahora mismo, si esto te parece mal, me vuelvo.»
35 The angel of Yahweh said to Balaam, 'Go with these men, but say only what I tel you to say.' SoBalaam went on with the chiefs sent by Balak.	35 Respondió el Ángel de Yahveh a Balaam: «Vete con esos hombres, pero no dirás nada más que lo que yo te diga.» Balaam marchó con los jefes de Balaq.
36 Balak learned that Balaam was coming and went out to meet him, in the direction of Ar in Moab, atthe Arnon frontier on the country's furthest boundary.	36 Oyó Balaq que llegaba Balaam y salió a su encuentro hacia Ar Moab, en la frontera del Arnón, en los confines del territorio.
37 Balak said to Balaam, 'Did I not send messengers to summon you? Why did you not come to me?Did you think, perhaps, I could confer no honours on you?'	37 Dijo Balaq a Balaam: «¿No te mandé llamar? ¿Por qué no viniste donde mí? ¿Es que no puedo recompensarte?»
38 Balaam said to Balak, 'I have come to you after al . I suppose you know I cannot say anything on myown? The words God puts into my mouth are what I shall say.'	38 Respondió Balaam a Balaq: «Mira que ahora ya he venido donde ti. A ver si puedo decir algo. La palabra que ponga Dios en mi boca es la que diré.»
39 Balaam set out with Balak. They came to Kiriath-Huzoth.	39 Marchó Balaam con Balaq y llegaron a Quiryat Jusot.
40 Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and offered portions to Balaam and the chiefs who were with him.	40 Sacrificó Balaq una vaca y una oveja y le envió porciones a Balaam y a los jefes que le acompañaban.
41 Next morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-Baal, from where he could see theedge of the camp.	41 A la mañana, tomó Balaq a Balaam y lo hizo subir a Bamot Baal, desde donde se veía un extremo del campamento.
