NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 The Israelites then set out and pitched their camp in the Plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan oppositeJericho.	1 Les Israélites partirent de là et campèrent dans les Steppes-de-Moab, de l’autre côté du Jourdain, à la hauteur de Jéricho.
2 Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites,	2 Balak, fils de Sipor, vit tout ce qu’Israël avait fait aux Amorites.
3 and Moab was terrified of the people, because there were so many of them. Moab was afraid of theIsraelites;	3 Les Moabites furent pris d’une grande peur en voyant combien ce peuple était nombreux: c’était l’effroi en Moab à cause d’Israël.
4 he said to the elders of Midian, 'This horde wil soon have cropped everything round us as closely asan ox crops grass in the countryside.' Now Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at the time.	4 Les Moabites dirent donc aux anciens de Madian: “Cette foule va brouter toute la région, comme le bœuf broute l’herbe des champs!” Le roi de Moab était en ce temps-là Balak, fils de Sipor.
5 He sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor, at Pethor on the River, in the territory of theAmawites, saying, 'Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside; they have halted at myvery door.	5 Il envoya chercher Balaam fils de Béor, à Pétor sur le fleuve, au pays des Ammonites. Il l’invita à venir en lui disant: “Un peuple sorti d’Égypte vient de s’étendre sur tout le pays et s’est établi en face de moi.
6 I beg you come and curse this people for me, for they are stronger than I am. We may then be able todefeat them and drive them out of the country. For this I know: anyone you bless is blessed, anyone you curse isaccursed.'	6 Viens donc, je t’en prie, et maudis-moi ce peuple car il est plus puissant que moi. Peut-être alors pourrai-je le battre et le chasser du pays car, je le sais, celui que tu bénis est béni, et celui que tu maudis est maudit!”
7 The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian set out, taking the fee for the divination with them. Theyfound Balaam and gave him Balak's message.	7 Les anciens de Moab partirent avec ceux de Madian, les mains pleines de cadeaux pour le devin, et ils arrivèrent chez Balaam. Quand ils lui rapportèrent les paroles de Balak,
8 He said to them, 'Stay the night here, and I wil answer as Yahweh directs me.' So the chiefs of Moabstayed with Balaam.	8 Balaam leur dit: “Installez-vous chez moi pour la nuit, et je vous donnerai une réponse selon ce que Yahvé me dira.” Les chefs de Moab restèrent donc chez Balaam.
9 God came to Balaam and said, 'Who are these men staying with you?'	9 Dieu vint vers Balaam et lui dit: “Qui sont ces hommes installés chez toi?”
10 Balaam said to God, 'Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent me this message,	10 Balaam répondit à Dieu: “Balak, fils de Sipor, roi de Moab, me fait dire ceci:
11 "Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside. Come now and curse themfor me; I may then be able to defeat them and drive them out." '	11 Ce peuple sorti d’Égypte couvre tout le pays. Viens donc et maudis-le moi, peut-être pourrai-je lui résister et le chasser.”
12 God said to Balaam, 'You are not to go with them. You are not to curse the people, for they areblessed.'	12 Mais Dieu dit à Balaam: “Tu n’iras pas avec eux et tu ne maudiras pas ce peuple, car il est béni.”
13 In the morning Balaam got up and said to the chiefs sent by Balak, 'Go back to your country, forYahweh wil not let me go with you.'	13 Balaam se leva de bon matin et dit aux chefs envoyés par Balak: “Retournez dans votre pays, car Yahvé a refusé de me laisser aller avec vous.”
14 So the chiefs of Moab got up, went back to Balak and said, 'Balaam refuses to come with us.'	14 Les chefs de Moab se levèrent donc et retournèrent vers Balak: “Balaam, dirent-ils, a refusé de venir avec nous!”
15 And again Balak sent chiefs, more numerous and more renowned than the first.	15 Balak envoya de nouveau des chefs plus nombreux et plus considérés que les premiers.
16 They came to Balaam and said, 'A message from Balak son of Zippor, "Now do not refuse to cometo me.	16 Ils arrivèrent chez Balaam et lui dirent: “Voici ce que dit Balak, fils de Sipor: Je t’en prie, ne refuse pas de venir chez moi,
17 I wil load you with honours and do whatever you say. I beg you come and curse this people for me."'	17 je te traiterai royalement et je ferai tout ce que tu me diras; viens et maudis-moi ce peuple!”
18 In reply, Balaam said to Balak's envoys, 'Even if Balak gave me his house ful of silver and gold, Icould not go against the order of Yahweh my God in anything, great or smal .	18 Balaam répondit aux serviteurs de Balak: “Même si Balak me donnait plein sa maison d’argent et d’or, je ne désobéirais pas à l’ordre de Yahvé, mon Dieu, que ce soit pour une petite ou pour une grande chose.
19 Now please stay the night here yourselves, and I wil learn what else Yahweh has to tel me.'	19 Cependant, restez ici cette nuit, s’il vous plaît, pour que je sache ce que Yahvé veut me dire encore!”
20 God came to Balaam during the night and said to him, 'Have not these men come to summon you?Get up, go with them, but do only what I tel you to do.'	20 Cette nuit-là Dieu vint vers Balaam et lui dit: “Ces hommes sont venus pour t’inviter? Eh bien, pars avec eux, mais tu ne feras que ce que je te dirai!”
21 Balaam got up and saddled his donkey and set out with the chiefs of Moab.	21 Balaam se leva de bon matin, sella son ânesse et partit avec les chefs de Moab.
22 His going kindled Yahweh's anger, and the angel of Yahweh took his stand on the road to bar hisway. Balaam was riding his donkey and his two servants were with him.	22 La colère de Dieu s’enflamma contre Balaam alors qu’il était en chemin. L’ange de Yahvé se posta sur le chemin pour lui barrer la route, tandis qu’il venait sur son ânesse accompagné de deux serviteurs.
23 Now the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, andshe turned off the road into the open country. Balaam then struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road.	23 L’ânesse vit l’ange de Yahvé qui lui barrait la route, avec son épée dégainée à la main. L’ânesse fit un crochet par les champs et Balaam frappa son ânesse pour la ramener sur le chemin.
24 The angel of Yahweh then went and stood on a narrow path among the vineyards, with a wall to theright and a wal to the left.	24 Alors l’ange de Yahvé vint se poster dans un chemin creux au milieu des vignes: il y avait une clôture de chaque côté.
25 The donkey saw the angel of Yahweh and scraped against the wal , scraping Balaam's foot againstit, so he struck her again.	25 L’ânesse vit l’ange de Yahvé; elle rasa le mur, écrasant le pied de Balaam contre la clôture, et Balaam la frappa de nouveau.
26 The angel of Yahweh then moved and stood in a place so narrow that there was no room to passeither to right or left.	26 L’ange de Yahvé revint se poster plus en avant et s’arrêta à un endroit si étroit que l’on ne pouvait lui échapper ni à droite ni à gauche.
27 When the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, she lay down under Balaam. Balaam flew into a rageand struck the donkey with his stick.	27 Quand l’ânesse vit l’ange de Yahvé, elle s’accroupit sous Balaam. Balaam, furieux, la frappa de son bâton.
28 Yahweh then gave the donkey the power to talk, and she said to Balaam, 'What harm have I doneyou, for you to strike me three times like this?'	28 Cette fois Yahvé ouvrit la bouche de l’ânesse et elle dit à Balaam: “Que t’ai-je fait pour que tu me frappes par trois fois?”
29 Balaam answered the donkey, 'Because you have been making a fool of me! If I had been carryinga sword, I should have killed you by now.'	29 Balaam répondit à son ânesse: “Mais tu te moques de moi! Si j’avais une épée à la main, je te tuerais sur-le-champ!”
30 The donkey said to Balaam, 'Am I not your donkey, and have I not been your mount all your life?Have I ever behaved like this with you before?' 'No,' he replied.	30 L’ânesse dit à Balaam: “Ne suis-je pas ton ânesse, que tu montes depuis que tu es au monde jusqu’à ce jour? Est-ce que j’ai l’habitude d’agir de la sorte avec toi?” “Certes non!” répondit-il.
31 Yahweh then opened Balaam's eyes and he saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with adrawn sword in his hand; and he bowed his head and threw himself on his face.	31 Alors Yahvé ouvrit les yeux de Balaam: il vit l’ange de Yahvé debout en travers du chemin, son épée dégainée à la main. Il s’agenouilla et se prosterna le nez contre terre.
32 And the angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Why did you strike your donkey three times like that? I myselfhad come to bar your way; while I am here your road is blocked.	32 L’ange de Yahvé lui dit: “Pourquoi as-tu frappé ton ânesse à trois reprises? Je suis venu pour te barrer la route, car ce voyage ne me plaît pas.
33 The donkey saw me and turned aside because of me three times. You are lucky she did turn aside,or I should have kil ed you by now, though I would have spared her.'	33 L’ânesse m’a vu et à trois reprises s’est détournée de moi. Si elle ne s’était pas détournée, je t’aurais tué sur-le-champ, et elle, je l’aurais laissée en vie.”
34 Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, 'I have sinned. I did not know you were standing in the road tostop me. But if what I am doing displeases you, I wil go home again.'	34 Balaam dit à l’ange de Yahvé: “J’ai peut-être péché, mais je ne savais pas que tu étais en travers de ma route. Si cela ne te plaît pas, je retourne chez moi.”
35 The angel of Yahweh said to Balaam, 'Go with these men, but say only what I tel you to say.' SoBalaam went on with the chiefs sent by Balak.	35 L’ange de Yahvé dit alors à Balaam: “Va avec ces messieurs! Mais tu ne diras que les paroles que je te dirai.” Balaam fit donc le chemin avec les chefs envoyés par Balak.
36 Balak learned that Balaam was coming and went out to meet him, in the direction of Ar in Moab, atthe Arnon frontier on the country's furthest boundary.	36 Lorsque Balak apprit l’arrivée de Balaam, il sortit à sa rencontre à Ar-Moab, sur la frontière de l’Arnon à l’extrémité de son pays.
37 Balak said to Balaam, 'Did I not send messengers to summon you? Why did you not come to me?Did you think, perhaps, I could confer no honours on you?'	37 Balak dit à Balaam: “Ne t’avais-je pas envoyé des gens pour t’inviter? Pourquoi n’es-tu pas venu? Tu pensais sans doute que je n’allais pas bien te payer?”
38 Balaam said to Balak, 'I have come to you after al . I suppose you know I cannot say anything on myown? The words God puts into my mouth are what I shall say.'	38 Balaam répondit à Balak: “Tu vois que j’arrive chez toi, mais que puis-je dire maintenant? Seulement les paroles que Dieu mettra dans ma bouche!”
39 Balaam set out with Balak. They came to Kiriath-Huzoth.	39 Balaam s’en alla donc avec Balak et ils arrivèrent à Kiryat-Housot.
40 Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and offered portions to Balaam and the chiefs who were with him.	40 Balak sacrifia du gros et du petit bétail et en fit porter à Balaam et aux chefs venus avec lui.
41 Next morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-Baal, from where he could see theedge of the camp.	41 Dès le matin Balak vint chercher Balaam et le fit monter à Bamot-Baal, car de là il pouvait voir une partie du peuple.
