Miriam, and Aaron too, criticised Moses over the Cushite woman he had married. He had indeedmarried a Cushite woman.1 And Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses, because of his wife, an Ethiopian,
They said, 'Is Moses the only one through whom Yahweh has spoken? Has he not spoken through ustoo?' Yahweh heard this.2 and they said: “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses? Has he not also spoken similarly to us?” And when the Lord had heard this,
Now Moses was extremely humble, the humblest man on earth.3 (for Moses was a man exceedingly meek, beyond all the men who were living upon the earth)
Suddenly Yahweh said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, 'Come out, al three of you, to the Tent ofMeeting.' They went, al three of them,4 immediately he spoke to him, and to Aaron and Miriam, “Go out, you three only, to the tabernacle of the covenant.” And when they had gone out,
and Yahweh descended in a pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the Tent. He cal ed Aaronand Miriam and they both came forward.5 the Lord descended in a column of cloud, and he stood at the entrance of the tabernacle, calling to Aaron and Miriam. And when they had advanced,
Yahweh said: Listen to my words! if there is a prophet among you, I reveal myself to him in a vision, I speak to him in a dream.6 he said to them: “Listen to my words. If there will be among you a prophet of the Lord, I will appear to him in a vision, or I will speak to him through a dream.
Not so with my servant Moses; to him my whole household is entrusted;7 But it is not so with my servant Moses, who is the most faithful in all my house.
to him I speak face to face, plainly and not in riddles, and he sees Yahweh's form. How, then, couldyou dare to criticise my servant Moses?8 For I speak with him mouth to mouth, and plainly. And not through enigmas and figures does he perceive the Lord. Therefore, why were you not afraid to disparage my servant Moses?”
Yahweh's anger was aroused by them. He went away,9 And being angry against them, he went away.
and as soon as the cloud left the Tent, there was Miriam covered with a virulent skin-disease, whiteas snow! Aaron turned to look at her and saw that she had contracted a virulent skin-disease.10 Likewise, the cloud which was over the tabernacle withdrew. And behold, Miriam appeared to be white with a leprosy, like snow. And when Aaron had looked upon her, and he had seen the spreading of the leprosy,
Aaron said to Moses: 'Oh, my Lord, please do not punish us for the sin we have been foolishenough to commit.11 he said to Moses: “I beg you, my lord, not to impose upon us this sin, which we have committed foolishly.
Do not let her be like some monster with its flesh half eaten away when it leaves its mother's womb!'12 Do not let this one be like one who is dead, or like an abortion that has been cast from the womb of her mother. Behold, half of her flesh is already consumed by leprosy.”
Moses pleaded with Yahweh. 'O God,' he said, 'I beg you, please heal her!'13 And Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, “O God, I beg you: heal her.”
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'If her father had done no more than spit in her face, would she not beunclean for seven days? Have her shut out of the camp for seven days, and then have her brought in again.'14 And the Lord answered him: “If her father had spit on her face, should she not have been filled with shame for at least seven days? Let her be separated, outside the camp, for seven days, and after that, she will be called back.”
Miriam was shut out of the camp for seven days. The people did not set out until she returned.15 And so Miriam was excluded from the camp for seven days. And the people did not move from that place, until Miriam was called back.
Then the people moved on from Hazeroth and pitched camp in the desert of Paran.
