NEW JERUSALEMPeshitta
The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah a second time.1 ܘܗܘܐ ܦܬܓܡܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܥܠ ܝܘܢܢ ܕܬܪ̈ܬܝܢ ܙܒܢܝ̈ܢ ܠܡܐܡܪ
'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to it as I shal tel you.'2 ܩܘܡ ܙܠ ܠܢܝܢܘܐ ܡܕܝܢܬܐ ܪܒܬܐ ܘܐܟܪܙ ܥܠܝܗ̇ ܟܪܘܙܘܬܐ ܕܐܡܪ ܐܢܐ ܠܟ
Jonah set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was a city greatbeyond compare; to cross it took three days.3 ܘܩܡ ܝܘܢܢ ܘܐܙܠ ܠܢܝܢܘܐ ܐܝܟ ܡܠܬܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܘܢܝܢܘܐ ܡܕܝܢܬܐ ܗܘܬ ܪܒܬܐ ܠܐܠܗܐ ܡܪܕܐ ܬܠܬܐ ܝܘ̈ܡܝܢ
Jonah began by going a day's journey into the city and then proclaimed, 'Only forty days more andNineveh will be overthrown.'4 ܘܫܪܝ ܝܘܢܢ ܠܡܥܠ ܠܢܝܢܘܐ ܡܪܕܐ ܝܘܡܐ ܚܕ ܘܐܟܪܙ ܘܐܡܪ ܡܟܐ ܠܐܪ̈ܒܥܝܢ ܝܘܡ̈ܝܢ ܢܝܢܘܐ ܡܬܗܦܟܐ
And the people of Nineveh believed in God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from thegreatest to the least.5
When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackclothand sat down in ashes.6
He then had it proclaimed throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his nobles, as fol ows: 'Noperson or animal, herd or flock, may eat anything; they may not graze, they may not drink any water.7 ܘܐܟܪܙ ܘܐܡܪ ܒܢܝܢܘܐ ܡܢ ܦܘܩܕܢܐ ܕܡܠܟܐ ܘܕܪ̈ܘܪܒܢܘܗܝ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܢܫܐ ܘܒܥܝܪܐ ܘܬܘܪ̈ܐ ܘܥܢܐ ܠܐ ܢܛܥܡܘܢ ܡܕܡ ܘܠܐ ܢܪܥܘܢ ܐܦ ܠܐ ܡ̈ܝܐ ܢܫܬܘܢ
All must put on sackcloth and cal on God with al their might; and let everyone renounce his evil waysand violent behaviour.8 ܐܠܐ ܢܬܟܣܘܢ ܣܩ̈ܐ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܢܫܐ ܘܒܥܝܪܐ ܘܢܩܪܘܢܗ ܠܐܠܗܐ ܒܚܢܓܬܐ ܘܢܗܦܘܟ ܐܢܫ ܡܢ ܐܘܪܚܗ ܒܝܫܬܐ ܘܡܢ ܚܛܘܦܝܐ ܕܐܝܬ ܒܐ̈ܝܕܘܗܝ
Who knows? Perhaps God wil change his mind and relent and renounce his burning wrath, so that weshall not perish.'9
God saw their efforts to renounce their evil ways. And God relented about the disaster which he hadthreatened to bring on them, and did not bring it.10 ܘܚܙܐ ܐܠܗܐ ܥܒ̈ܕܝܗܘܢ ܕܬܒܘ ܡܢ ܐܘܪ̈ܚܬܗܘܢ ܒܝܫ̈ܬܐ ܘܐܗܦܟ ܡܢܗܘܢ ܚܡܬܐ ܕܪܘܓܙܗ ܘܠܐ ܐܘܒܕ ܐܢܘܢ
