Jonah 3

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah a second time.	1 La parola del Signore fu rivolta a Giona per la seconda volta. Gli disse:
2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to it as I shal tel you.'	2 "Su, va' nella grande città di Ninive e annunziale il messaggio che io ti dico!".
3 Jonah set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was a city greatbeyond compare; to cross it took three days.	3 Giona si mise in cammino per andare a Ninive secondo la parola del Signore. Ninive era una città molto grande, lunga tre giorni di cammino.
4 Jonah began by going a day's journey into the city and then proclaimed, 'Only forty days more andNineveh will be overthrown.'	4 Giona, dopo essersi inoltrato in città per il cammino di un giorno, proclamò: "Ancora quaranta giorni e Ninive sarà distrutta!".
5 And the people of Nineveh believed in God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from thegreatest to the least.	5 I Niniviti credettero a Dio e proclamarono un digiuno, vestendosi di sacco dai più grandi ai più piccoli.
6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackclothand sat down in ashes.	6 Quando la notizia arrivò al re di Ninive, egli si levò dal suo trono, si tolse di dosso il manto reale, si vestì di sacco e andò a sedersi sulla cenere.
7 He then had it proclaimed throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his nobles, as fol ows: 'Noperson or animal, herd or flock, may eat anything; they may not graze, they may not drink any water.	7 Egli fece bandire in Ninive per decreto del re e dei suoi grandi: "Uomini e bestiame grande e piccolo non gusteranno alcunché, non pascoleranno e non berranno acqua!
8 All must put on sackcloth and cal on God with al their might; and let everyone renounce his evil waysand violent behaviour.	8 Ci si copra di sacchi e si invochi Dio con forza! Ognuno si converta dalla sua condotta cattiva e dalla violenza di cui ha macchiato le mani!
9 Who knows? Perhaps God wil change his mind and relent and renounce his burning wrath, so that weshall not perish.'	9 Chissà che Dio non si ravveda e cambi, cosicché receda dall'ardore della sua ira e non periamo!".
10 God saw their efforts to renounce their evil ways. And God relented about the disaster which he hadthreatened to bring on them, and did not bring it.	10 Dio vide le loro azioni, che cioè si erano convertiti dalla loro cattiva condotta. Dio allora si pentì del male che aveva detto di far loro e non lo fece.
