Jonah 3

1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah a second time.	1 И было слово Господне к Ионе вторично:
2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to it as I shal tel you.'	2 встань, иди в Ниневию, город великий, и проповедуй в ней, что Я повелел тебе.
3 Jonah set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was a city greatbeyond compare; to cross it took three days.	3 И встал Иона и пошел в Ниневию, по слову Господню; Ниневия же была город великий у Бога, на три дня ходьбы.
4 Jonah began by going a day's journey into the city and then proclaimed, 'Only forty days more andNineveh will be overthrown.'	4 И начал Иона ходить по городу, сколько можно пройти в один день, и проповедывал, говоря: еще сорок дней и Ниневия будет разрушена!
5 And the people of Nineveh believed in God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from thegreatest to the least.	5 И поверили Ниневитяне Богу, и объявили пост, и оделись во вретища, от большого из них до малого.
6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackclothand sat down in ashes.	6 Это слово дошло до царя Ниневии, и он встал с престола своего, и снял с себя царское облачение свое, и оделся во вретище, и сел на пепле,
7 He then had it proclaimed throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his nobles, as fol ows: 'Noperson or animal, herd or flock, may eat anything; they may not graze, they may not drink any water.	7 и повелел провозгласить и сказать в Ниневии от имени царя и вельмож его: 'чтобы ни люди, ни скот, ни волы, ни овцы ничего не ели, не ходили на пастбище и воды не пили,
8 All must put on sackcloth and cal on God with al their might; and let everyone renounce his evil waysand violent behaviour.	8 и чтобы покрыты были вретищем люди и скот и крепко вопияли к Богу, и чтобы каждый обратился от злого пути своего и от насилия рук своих.
9 Who knows? Perhaps God wil change his mind and relent and renounce his burning wrath, so that weshall not perish.'	9 Кто знает, может быть, еще Бог умилосердится и отвратит от нас пылающий гнев Свой, и мы не погибнем'.
10 God saw their efforts to renounce their evil ways. And God relented about the disaster which he hadthreatened to bring on them, and did not bring it.	10 И увидел Бог дела их, что они обратились от злого пути своего, и пожалел Бог о бедствии, о котором сказал, что наведет на них, и не навел.
