Jonah 3

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah a second time.	1 Il Signore parlò di nuovo a Giona e gli disse:
2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to it as I shal tel you.'	2 « Alzati, va a Ninive, la gran città, a predicarvi quello che ti dico io ».
3 Jonah set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was a city greatbeyond compare; to cross it took three days.	3 Giona si mosse e andò a Ninive, secondo l'ordine del Signore. Or Ninive era una città grande, di tre giorni di cammino.
4 Jonah began by going a day's journey into the city and then proclaimed, 'Only forty days more andNineveh will be overthrown.'	4 Giona cominciò a penetrare in città, camminando per una giornata e si m se a gridare e a dire: « Ancor quaranta giorni, e Ninive sarà distrutta ».
5 And the people of Nineveh believed in God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from thegreatest to the least.	5 I Niniviti credettero a Dio, e ordinarono il digiuno, e si vestiron di sacco, dal più grande al più piccolo.
6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackclothand sat down in ashes.	6 Giunta la cosa al re di Ninive, egli si alzò dal suo trono, depose le sue vesti, indossò il sacco e si gettò sulla cenere.
7 He then had it proclaimed throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his nobles, as fol ows: 'Noperson or animal, herd or flock, may eat anything; they may not graze, they may not drink any water.	7 E fu pubblicato e imposto in Ninive quest'ordine, fatto dal re e dai suoi principi: « Uomini e bestie, bovi e pecore, non tocchino niente, non vadano al pascolo, non bevano acqua.
8 All must put on sackcloth and cal on God with al their might; and let everyone renounce his evil waysand violent behaviour.	8 Si copran di sacco gli uomini e gli animali, e gridino con tutta forza al Signore; si converta ciascuno dalla sua cattiva vita e dalle sue opere malvage.
9 Who knows? Perhaps God wil change his mind and relent and renounce his burning wrath, so that weshall not perish.'	9 Chi sa che Dio non muti sentenza e ci perdoni; e, cessata l'ira sua furibonda, non ci faccia perire?».
10 God saw their efforts to renounce their evil ways. And God relented about the disaster which he hadthreatened to bring on them, and did not bring it.	10 Dio, visto quanto facevano, e come s'erano convertiti dalla loro cattiva vita, n'ebbe compassione, e il male che aveva detto di far loro non, lo fece.
