NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah a second time.1 Et factum est verbum Domini ad Ionam secundo dicens:
2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to it as I shal tel you.'2 “ Surge, vade in Nineven civitatem magnam et praedica in ea praedicationem,quam ego loquor ad te ”.
3 Jonah set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was a city greatbeyond compare; to cross it took three days.3 Et surrexit Ionas et abiit in Nineven iuxta verbumDomini.
Et Nineve erat civitas magna coram Deo, itinere trium dierum.
4 Jonah began by going a day's journey into the city and then proclaimed, 'Only forty days more andNineveh will be overthrown.'4 Et coepit Ionasintroire in civitatem itinere diei unius; et clamavit et dixit: “ Adhucquadraginta dies, et Nineve subvertetur ”.
5 And the people of Nineveh believed in God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from thegreatest to the least.5 Et crediderunt viri Ninevitae in Deo; et praedicaverunt ieiunium et vestitisunt saccis a maiore usque ad minorem.
6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackclothand sat down in ashes.6 Et pervenit verbum ad regem Nineve; etsurrexit de solio suo et abiecit pallium suum a se et indutus est sacco et seditin cinere.
7 He then had it proclaimed throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his nobles, as fol ows: 'Noperson or animal, herd or flock, may eat anything; they may not graze, they may not drink any water.7 Et clamavit et dixit in Nineve decreto regis et principum eiusdicens: “ Homines et iumenta et boves et pecora non gustent quidquam necpascantur et aquam non bibant;
8 All must put on sackcloth and cal on God with al their might; and let everyone renounce his evil waysand violent behaviour.8 et operiantur saccis homines et iumenta etclament ad Deum in fortitudine, et convertatur vir a via sua mala et aviolentia, quae est in manibus eorum.
9 Who knows? Perhaps God wil change his mind and relent and renounce his burning wrath, so that weshall not perish.'9 Quis scit si convertatur et ignoscatDeus et revertatur a furore irae suae, et non peribimus? ”.
10 God saw their efforts to renounce their evil ways. And God relented about the disaster which he hadthreatened to bring on them, and did not bring it.10 Et vidit Deus opera eorum, quia conversi sunt de via sua mala; et misertusest Deus super malum, quod lo cutus fuerat ut faceret eis, et
non fecit.
