NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
This is what Lord Yahweh showed me: A basket of ripe fruit.1 This is what the Lord GOD showed me: a basket of ripe fruit.
'What do you see, Amos?' he asked. 'A basket of ripe fruit,' I said. Then Yahweh said, 'The time is ripefor my people Israel; I wil not continue to overlook their offences.2 "What do you see, Amos?" he asked. I answered, "A basket of ripe fruit." Then the LORD said to me: The time is ripe to have done with my people Israel; I will forgive them no longer.
That day, the palace songs will turn to howls, -declares the Lord Yahweh- the corpses wil be manythat are thrown down everywhere. Keep silent!'3 The temple songs shall become wailings on that day, says the Lord GOD. Many shall be the corpses, strewn everywhere.--Silence!
Listen to this, you who crush the needy and reduce the oppressed to nothing,4 Hear this, you who trample upon the needy and destroy the poor of the land!
you who say, 'When wil New Moon be over so that we can sel our corn, and Sabbath, so that we canmarket our wheat? Then, we can make the bushel-measure smaller and the shekel-weight bigger, byfraudulently tampering with the scales.5 "When will the new moon be over," you ask, "that we may sell our grain, and the sabbath, that we may display the wheat? We will diminish the ephah, add to the shekel, and fix our scales for cheating!
We can buy up the weak for silver and the poor for a pair of sandals, and even get a price for thesweepings of the wheat.'6 We will buy the lowly man for silver, and the poor man for a pair of sandals; even the refuse of the wheat we will sell!"
Yahweh has sworn by the pride of Jacob, 'Never wil I forget anything they have done.'7 The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Never will I forget a thing they have done!
Wil not the earth tremble for this and al who live on it lament, as it al rises together like the Nile inEgypt, it swel s and then subsides like the Egyptian Nile?8 Shall not the land tremble because of this, and all who dwell in it mourn, While it rises up and tosses like the Nile, and settles back like the river of Egypt?
'On that Day- declares the Lord Yahweh- I shal make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth inbroad daylight.9 On that day, says the Lord GOD, I will make the sun set at midday and cover the earth with darkness in broad daylight.
I shall turn your festivals into mourning and all your singing into lamentation; I shall make you all wearsacking round your waists and have al your heads shaved. I shal make it like the mourning for an only child,and it wil end like the bitterest of days.10 I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentations. I will cover the loins of all with sackcloth and make every head bald. I will make them mourn as for an only son, and bring their day to a bitter end.
'The days are coming- declares the Lord Yahweh- when I shal send a famine on the country, nothunger for food, not thirst for water, but famine for hearing Yahweh's word.11 Yes, days are coming, says the Lord GOD, when I will send famine upon the land: Not a famine of bread, or thirst for water, but for hearing the word of the LORD.
People wil stagger from sea to sea, will wander from the north to the east, searching for Yahweh'sword, but wil not find it.12 Then shall they wander from sea to sea and rove from the north to the east In search of the word of the LORD, but they shall not find it.
'That Day, fine girls and stalwart youths will faint from thirst.13 On that day, fair virgins and young men shall faint from thirst;
The people who swear by the Sin of Samaria, who say, "Long live your god, Dan!" and "Hurrah for thepilgrimage to Beersheba!" will all fal , never to rise again.'14 Those who swear by the shameful idol of Samaria, "By the life of your god, O Dan!" "By the life of your love, O Beersheba!" those shall fall, never to rise again.
