1 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had a series of dreams; he was perturbed by this andsleep deserted him.	1 Nabucodonosor, l'anno secondo del suo regno, ebbe un sogno, ne fu agitato il suo spirito, ma non se ne potè ricordare.
2 The king then had magicians and soothsayers, sorcerers and Chaldaeans summoned to tel him whathis dreams meant. They arrived and stood in the king's presence.	2 Allora il re ordinò che fossero adunati gli indovini, i maghi, i malefìci e i Caldei, affinchè indicassero al re i suoi sogni. Essi andarono a presentarsi davanti al re.
3 The king said to them, 'I have had a dream, and my mind is troubled by a wish to understand it.'	3 E il re disse loro: « Ho fatto un sogno, e per la confusione dello spirito non so più che abbia veduto ».
4 The Chaldaeans answered the king: 'May your majesty live for ever! Tel your servants the dream, andwe shal reveal its meaning for you.'	4 I Caldei risposero (in aramaico): « O re, vivi in eterno! Racconta ai tuoi servi il sogno, e noi te ne daremo la spiegazione ».
5 The king answered the Chaldaeans, 'This is my firm resolve: if you cannot tel me what I dreamt andwhat it means, I shal have you torn limb from limb and your houses turned into dunghil s.	5 Il re rispose ai Caldei, dicendo: « La cosa m'è sfuggita: Se voi non m'esporrete il sogno e la sua significazione, voi sarete messi a morte e le vostre case saran confiscate.
6 If, on the other hand, you can tel me what I dreamt and what it means, I shal give you presents,rewards and high honour. So tel me what I dreamt and what it means.'	6 Se invece m'esporrete il sogno e la sua spiegazione, avrete da me premi, doni e grandi onori: ditemi adunque il sogno e il suo significato ».
7 A second time they said, 'Let the king tel his dream to his servants, and we shal reveal its meaning.'	7 Quelli risposero per la seconda volta, e dissero: « Il re dica ai suoi servi il sogno, e noi n'esporremo il significato ».
8 But the king retorted, 'It is plain to me that you are trying to gain time, knowing my proclaimed resolve.	8 Ma il re rispondendo disse: « Vedo bene che voi volete guadagnar tempo, sapendo che la cosa m'è sfuggita di mente.
9 If you do not interpret my dream for me, there will be but one sentence passed on you al ; you haveagreed among yourselves to make me misleading and tortuous speeches while the time goes by. So tel mewhat my dream was, and then I shal know whether you can interpret it.'	9 Se non mi fate sapere il sogno, bisogna pensare che voi andrete a imbastire una interpretazione cervellotica e piena d'inganno, per spacciarmela, e così far passar il tempo. Ditemi adunque il mio sogno per convincermi che lo interpretate secondo verità ».
10 The Chaldaeans answered the king, 'Nobody in the world could explain the king's problem; what ismore, no other king, governor or chief would think of putting such a question to any magician, soothsayer orChaldaean.	10 Ma i Caldei, rispondendo al re, dissero: « Sulla terra non vi può essere uomo tale da eseguire, o re, il tuo comando; e nessun re, per quanto grande e possente, domanderebbe tal cosa da chiunque sia indovino, o mago, o Caldeo.
11 The question the king asks is difficult, and no one can find the king an answer to it, except the gods,whose dwelling is not with mortals.'	11 E' infatti impossibile ciò che tu chiedi, o re, nè potrebbe trovarsi uno che lo possa far conoscere al re, eccetto gli dèi, che però non han relazione cogli uomini ».
12 At this the king flew into a rage and ordered al the Babylonian sages to be put to death.	12 A tal risposta il re, montato su tutte le furie, ordinò che fossero messi a morte tutti i sapienti di Babilonia.
13 On publication of the decree to have the sages killed, search was made for Daniel and hiscompanions to have them put to death.	13 Promulgata la sentenza, cominciavano ad uccidere i sapienti, e andavano in cerca di Daniele e dei suoi compagni per farli morire.
14 Then, with shrewd and cautious words, Daniel approached Arioch, the king's chief executioner, whenhe was on his way to kil the Babylonian sages.	14 Allora Daniele domandò ad Arioc, capitano delle milizie del re, mandato ad uccidere i sapienti di Babilonia, in che consistesse questa legge e questa sentenza;
15 To this royal official Arioch he said, 'Why has the king issued such a harsh decree?' Arioch explainedmatters to Daniel,	15 e a lui, che dal re aveva ricevuta tal commissione, chiese per qual motivo il re avesse pronunziata sì crudele sentenza. Avendogli Arioc raccontato il fatto,
16 and Daniel went off to ask the king for a stay of execution to give him the opportunity of revealing his interpretation to the king.	16 Daniele andò a trovare il re e lo pregò a dargli tempo per dare la spiegazione.
17 Daniel then went home and told his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah what had happened,	17 E tornato a casa sua raccontò la cosa ai suoi compagni Anania, Misael e Azaria,
18 urging them to beg the God of heaven to show his mercy and explain the mysterious secret, so thatDaniel and his friends might be spared the fate of the other Babylonian sages.	18 esortandoli ad implorare misericordia dal Dio del cielo, riguardo a tale arcano, affinchè non perissero Daniele, i suoi compagni e gli altri sapienti di Babilonia.
19 The mystery was then revealed to Daniel in a night-vision, and Daniel blessed the God of heaven.	19 Durante la notte in una visione fu rivelato a Daniele l'arcano, e Daniele benedisse il Dio del cielo,
20 This is what Daniel said: May the name of God be blessed for ever and ever, since wisdom and powerare his alone.	20 e, presa la parola, disse: « Sia benedetto dall'eternità per tutta l'eternità il nome del Signore; perchè di lui è la sapienza e la fortezza.
21 It is he who controls the procession of times and seasons, who makes and unmakes kings, whoconfers wisdom on the wise, and knowledge on those with discernment,	21 E' lui che muta i tempi e le età, fa passare i regni e li costituisce, dà la sapienza ai sapienti e l'intelligenza agli intelligenti.
22 who uncovers depths and mysteries, who knows what lies in darkness; and light dwel s with him.	22 E' lui che rivela le cose profonde e nascoste, conosce ciò che è nelle tenebre, e la luce è con lui.
23 To you, God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise for having given me wisdom and strength: to meyou have explained what we asked you, to us you have explained the king's problem.	23 Te, o Dio dei padri nostri, ringrazio, te lodo, perchè m'hai data sapienza e fortezza, ed ora m'hai fatto conoscere quello per cui t'abbiamo pregato, ci hai rivelato quello che il re chiede ».
24 So Daniel went to see Arioch, whom the king had made responsible for putting the Babylonian sagesto death. Going in, he said, 'Do not put the Babylonian sages to death. Take me into the king's presence and Iwil reveal the meaning to the king.'	24 Poi Daniele andò da Arioc, a cui il re aveva ordinato di sterminare i sapienti di Babilonia, e gli disse così: « Non sterminare i sapienti di Babilonia, introducimi al cospetto del re, ed io gli esporrò la spiegazione ».
25 Arioch lost no time in bringing Daniel to the king. 'Among the exiles from Judah,' he said, 'I havediscovered a man who can reveal the meaning to the king.'	25 Arioc s'affrettò ad introdurre Daniele dal re, a cui disse: « Ho trovato tra gli esuli figli di Giuda chi darà al re la spiegazione ».
26 The king said to Daniel (who had been given the name Belteshazzar), 'Can you tel me what I dreamtand what it means?'	26 Allora il re, presa la parola, disse a Daniele, che si chiamava Bai tassar : « Ti credi capace di potermi dire il sogno da me veduto e il suo significato? »
27 Facing the king, Daniel replied, 'None of the sages, soothsayers, magicians or exorcists has beenable to tell the king the truth of the mystery which the king has propounded;	27 Daniele, rispondendo al re, disse: « L'arcano richiesto dal re non lo possono svelare al re i sapienti, i maghi, ghindo vini, gli aruspici;
28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries and who has shown King Nebuchadnezzar whatis to take place in the final days. These, then, are the dream and the visions that passed through your head asyou lay in bed:	28 ma v'è in cielo un Dio che svela i misteri, e che ha fatto sapere a te, o re Nabucodonosor, le cose che avverranno negli ultimi tempi. Il tuo sogno e le visioni che avesti in capo nel tuo letto son queste:
29 'Your Majesty, on your bed your thoughts turned to what would happen in the future, and the Revealerof Mysteries disclosed to you what is to take place.	29 Tu, o re, nel tuo letto, cominciasti a pensare a quello che dovrà avvenire in futuro, e colui che svela i misteri ti fa sapere le cose che avverranno.
30 This mystery has been revealed to me, not that I am wiser than anyone else, but for this sole purpose:that the king should learn what it means, and that you should understand your inmost thoughts.	30 E a me è stato svelato questo arcano, non per una sapienza che io abbia superiore a qualunque altro vivente, ma perchè il re ne sappia il significato, e tu riconosca i pensieri della tua mente.
31 'You have had a vision, Your Majesty; this is what you saw: a statue, a great statue of extremebrightness, stood before you, terrible to see.	31 Tu, o re, stavi a guardare, ed ecco una specie di grande statua: questa grande statua, di sublime altezza, ti stava davanti e ne era terribile lo sguardo.
32 The head of this statue was of fine gold, its chest and arms were of silver, its belly and thighs ofbronze,	32 Il capo di questa statua era d'oro finissimo, il petto e le braccia eran d'argento, il ventre e le cosce di bronzo;
33 its legs of iron, its feet part iron, part clay.	33 le gambe di ferro, e i piedi parte eran di ferro e parte di creta.
34 While you were gazing, a stone broke away, untouched by any hand, and struck the statue, struck itsfeet of iron and clay and shattered them.	34 Mentre stavi a guardare, una pietra, senza opera di mani, si staccò dal monte, percosse la statua nei piedi di ferro e di creta, e li ruppe.
35 Then, iron and clay, bronze, silver and gold, al broke into pieces as fine as chaff on the threshing-floorin summer. The wind blew them away, leaving not a trace behind. And the stone that had struck the statue grewinto a great mountain, fil ing the whole world.	35 Allora andarono in frantumi tanto il ferro che la creta e il bronzo, l'argento e l'oro furono ridotti come pula d'aia estiva, dispersa dal vento. Così nulla rimase di essi; ma la pietra che aveva dato il colpo alla statua diventò un gran monte e riempi tutta quanta la terra.
36 This was the dream; we shal now explain to the king what it means.	36 Questo è il sogno, ed ora ne daremo dinanzi a te la spiegazione, o re.
37 'You, Your Majesty, king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given sovereignty, power, strengthand honour-	37 Tu sei il re dei re, e il Dio dei cielo t'ha dato regno, fortezza, impero e gloria;
38 human beings, wild animals, birds of the air, wherever they live, he has entrusted to your rule, makingyou king of them al -- you are the golden head.	38 ha assoggettato al tuo potere tutti i luoghi dove abitano i figli degli uomini, le bestie del campo, gii uccelli dell'aria; tutto ha posto sotto il tuo dominio: tu sei dunque il capo d'oro.
39 And, after you, another kingdom wil rise, not as great as yours, and then a third, of bronze, which wilrule the whole world.	39 Dopo di te sorgerà un altro regno, ma inferiore al tuo, d'argento; poi un terzo regno, di bronzo, che dominerà su tutta la terra,
40 There wil be a fourth kingdom, hard as iron, as iron that pulverises and crushes al . Like iron thatbreaks everything to pieces, it wil crush and break all the earlier kingdoms.	40 Il quarto regno sarà come il ferro: come il ferro spezza e doma ogni cosa, così spezzerà e stritolerà tutte queste cose.
41 The feet you saw, part earthenware, part iron, are a kingdom which wil be split in two, but which wilretain something of the strength of iron, just as you saw the iron and the clay of the earthenware mixed together.	41 Siccome tu hai veduto che una parte dei piedi e delle dita era di creta e una parte di ferro, tal regno sarà diviso; ma avrà nei piedi la consistenza del ferro; infatti tu hai veduto il ferro mescolato colla creta.
42 The feet were part iron, part potter's clay: the kingdom wil be partly strong and partly brittle.	42 E come le dita dei piedi erano in parte di ferro e in parte di creta, tal regno sarà parte solido e parte fragile,
43 And just as you saw the iron and the clay of the earthenware mixed together, so the two wil be mixedtogether in human seed; but they wil not hold together any more than iron wil blend with clay.	43 Il ferro che hai veduto mescolato colla creta dice che si uniranno per via di parentele, ma non faran corpo tra loro, come il ferro non può far corpo colla creta.
44 In the days of those kings, the God of heaven wil set up a kingdom which wil never be destroyed, andthis kingdom wil not pass into the hands of another race: it will shatter and absorb all the previous kingdoms anditself last for ever-	44 Or nel tempo di quei regni, il Dio del cielo farà sorgere un regno che non sarà mai distrutto in eterno; il regno di lui non passerà ad altro popolo, ma stritolerà e consumerà tutti questi regni, ed esso durerà in eterno;
45 just as you saw a stone, untouched by hand, break away from the mountain and reduce iron, bronze,earthenware, silver and gold to powder. The Great God has shown the king what is to take place. The dream istrue, the interpretation exact.'	45 infatti, come hai veduto, la pietra, staccata dal monte senza opera d'uomo, spezzò la creta, il ferro, il bronzo, l'argento e l'oro. Il grande Iddio ha fatto conoscere al re le cose che avverranno in futuro: il sogno è vero e n'è fedele l'interpretazione ».
46 At this, King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel; he gave orders for Daniel to be offered an oblation and a fragrant sacrifice.	46 Allora Nabucodonosor si prostrò bocconi per terra ad adorare Daniele, e ordinò che gli fossero offerti incenso e sacrifizi.
47 The king said to Daniel, 'Your god is indeed the God of gods, the Master of kings, and the Revealer ofMysteries, since you have been able to reveal this mystery.'	47 E parlando a Daniele, il re disse: « Veramente il vostro Dio è il Dio degli dèi, il Signore dei re, il rivelatore dei misteri, perchè tu hai potuto svelare tale arcano ».
48 The king then conferred high rank on Daniel and gave him many handsome presents. He also madehim governor of the whole province of Babylon and head of all the sages of Babylon.	48 Allora il re innalzò ai sommi onori Daniele, gli diede molti e grandi doni, lo costituì principe di tutte le provincie di Babilonia, capo dei magistrati, e sopra tutti i sapienti di Babilonia.
49 At Daniel's request, the king entrusted the affairs of the province of Babylon to Shadrach, Meshachand Abed-Nego; Daniel himself remained in attendance on the king.	49 A richiesta di Daniele, il re costituì sopra gli affari della provincia di Babilonia Sidrac, Misac e Abdenago. Daniele invece dimorò alla corte.
