Daniel 2

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had a series of dreams; he was perturbed by this andsleep deserted him.	1 No segundo ano de seu reinado, Nabucodonosor teve sonhos que lhe perturbaram a tal ponto o espírito, que perdeu o sono.
2 The king then had magicians and soothsayers, sorcerers and Chaldaeans summoned to tel him whathis dreams meant. They arrived and stood in the king's presence.	2 Mandou chamar os escribas, os mágicos, os feiticeiros e os caldeus para lhe fazerem a interpretação. Estes vieram apresentar-se diante do rei.
3 The king said to them, 'I have had a dream, and my mind is troubled by a wish to understand it.'	3 Tive um sonho, disse-lhes, e meu espírito se consome à procura do significado.
4 The Chaldaeans answered the king: 'May your majesty live for ever! Tel your servants the dream, andwe shal reveal its meaning for you.'	4 Os caldeus responderam ao rei {em língua aramaica}: Senhor, longa vida ao rei! Narra teu sonho para que teus servos dêem a interpretação.
5 The king answered the Chaldaeans, 'This is my firm resolve: if you cannot tel me what I dreamt andwhat it means, I shal have you torn limb from limb and your houses turned into dunghil s.	5 O rei disse aos caldeus: para mim é coisa decidida: se não me explicardes o conteúdo do sonho bem como sua significação, sereis estraçalhados e vossas casas reduzidas a um montão de imundícies.
6 If, on the other hand, you can tel me what I dreamt and what it means, I shal give you presents,rewards and high honour. So tel me what I dreamt and what it means.'	6 Mas se me revelardes tanto o conteúdo quanto a significação do sonho, recebereis de mim donativos, presentes e grandes testemunhos de honra. Portanto, dizei-me meu sonho e o que ele significa.
7 A second time they said, 'Let the king tel his dream to his servants, and we shal reveal its meaning.'	7 De novo responderam: Que o rei narre o sonho a seus servos e nós faremos a interpretação.
8 But the king retorted, 'It is plain to me that you are trying to gain time, knowing my proclaimed resolve.	8 Sei agora perfeitamente, continou o rei, que procurais ganhar tempo, porque sabeis que estou bem decidido
9 If you do not interpret my dream for me, there will be but one sentence passed on you al ; you haveagreed among yourselves to make me misleading and tortuous speeches while the time goes by. So tel mewhat my dream was, and then I shal know whether you can interpret it.'	9 a aplicar-vos a dita sentença, se não me revelardes o conteúdo de meu sonho. Estais combinados a mentir-me e a enganar-me, esperando que as circunstâncias mudem. Vamos, dizei-me o que sonhei e eu saberei se sois capazes de dar a interpretação.
10 The Chaldaeans answered the king, 'Nobody in the world could explain the king's problem; what ismore, no other king, governor or chief would think of putting such a question to any magician, soothsayer orChaldaean.	10 Os caldeus deram ao rei esta resposta: Não há homem algum sobre a terra que possa fazer o que exige o rei. E, de fato, jamais rei algum, por maior e mais poderoso que tenha sido, pediu tamanha coisa a um escriba, mágico ou caldeu.
11 The question the king asks is difficult, and no one can find the king an answer to it, except the gods,whose dwelling is not with mortals.'	11 A questão proposta pelo rei é difícil e ninguém poderia dar a solução ao rei, a não ser os deuses que estão excluídos do trato com os seres carnais.
12 At this the king flew into a rage and ordered al the Babylonian sages to be put to death.	12 Com isso, o rei encolerizou-se e, na sua fúria, deu ordem para matarem todos os sábios de Babilônia.
13 On publication of the decree to have the sages killed, search was made for Daniel and hiscompanions to have them put to death.	13 A sentença foi publicada e o massacre dos sábios começou. Procuravam Daniel e seus comapanheiros para matá-los,
14 Then, with shrewd and cautious words, Daniel approached Arioch, the king's chief executioner, whenhe was on his way to kil the Babylonian sages.	14 quando este dirigiu a Arioc, chefe da guarda do rei, que havia saído para executar todos os sábios babilônios, palavras cheias de prudência e sabedoria:
15 To this royal official Arioch he said, 'Why has the king issued such a harsh decree?' Arioch explainedmatters to Daniel,	15 Por que, perguntou-lhe, uma sentença tão severa da parte do rei? Arioc expôs-lhe o assunto,
16 and Daniel went off to ask the king for a stay of execution to give him the opportunity of revealing his interpretation to the king.	16 e logo Daniel decidiu-se ir ao rei, para pedir-lhe a concessão de uma prorrogação: daria então ao rei a interpretação {pedida}.
17 Daniel then went home and told his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah what had happened,	17 Logo que voltou do rei, Daniel pôs a par do assunto seus companheiros Ananias, Misael e Azarias.
18 urging them to beg the God of heaven to show his mercy and explain the mysterious secret, so thatDaniel and his friends might be spared the fate of the other Babylonian sages.	18 Pediu-lhes para implorarem a misericórdia do Deus dos céus a respeito desse enigma, a fim de que não matassem Daniel e seus companheiros com o resto de Babilônia.
19 The mystery was then revealed to Daniel in a night-vision, and Daniel blessed the God of heaven.	19 O mistério foi então revelado a Daniel numa visão noturna. Pelo que, bendizendo o Deus dos céus,
20 This is what Daniel said: May the name of God be blessed for ever and ever, since wisdom and powerare his alone.	20 Daniel expressou-se como segue: Bendito seja o nome de Deus de eternidade em eternidade, porque a ele pertencem a sabedoria e o poder!
21 It is he who controls the procession of times and seasons, who makes and unmakes kings, whoconfers wisdom on the wise, and knowledge on those with discernment,	21 É ele quem faz mudar os tempos e as circunstâncias; é ele quem depõe os reis e os enaltece; é ele quem dá sabedoria aos sábios e talento aos inteligentes.
22 who uncovers depths and mysteries, who knows what lies in darkness; and light dwel s with him.	22 É ele quem revela os profundos e secretos mistérios, quem conhece o que está mergulhado nas trevas, junto ao qual habita a luz.
23 To you, God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise for having given me wisdom and strength: to meyou have explained what we asked you, to us you have explained the king's problem.	23 Ó Deus de meus pais, eu vos exalto e vos louvo, porque vós me destes a prudência e a força, e porque vós nos manifestastes o que vos pedimos, revelando-nos o sonho do rei.
24 So Daniel went to see Arioch, whom the king had made responsible for putting the Babylonian sagesto death. Going in, he said, 'Do not put the Babylonian sages to death. Take me into the king's presence and Iwil reveal the meaning to the king.'	24 Depois disso, Daniel foi procurar Arioc, a quem o rei tinha incumbido do massacre dos sábios de Babilônia. E falou-lhe assim: Não mandes matar os sábios de Babilônia. Introduze-me à presença do rei para que eu lhe dê a explicação.
25 Arioch lost no time in bringing Daniel to the king. 'Among the exiles from Judah,' he said, 'I havediscovered a man who can reveal the meaning to the king.'	25 Arioc apressou-se em conduzir Daniel junto ao rei, dizendo-lhe: Achei, entre os deportados da Judéia, um homem que dará ao rei a explicação desejada.
26 The king said to Daniel (who had been given the name Belteshazzar), 'Can you tel me what I dreamtand what it means?'	26 O rei dirigiu a palavra a Daniel {que tinha o cognome de Baltazar}: És realmente capaz, disse-lhe, de desvendar-me o sonho que tive e fornecer-me a interpretação?
27 Facing the king, Daniel replied, 'None of the sages, soothsayers, magicians or exorcists has beenable to tell the king the truth of the mystery which the king has propounded;	27 O mistério cuja revelação o rei pede, respondeu Daniel ao rei, nem os sábios, nem os mágicos, nem os feiticeiros, nem os astrólogos são capazes de revelar-lhos.
28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries and who has shown King Nebuchadnezzar whatis to take place in the final days. These, then, are the dream and the visions that passed through your head asyou lay in bed:	28 Mas no céu existe um Deus que desvenda os mistérios, o qual quis revelar ao rei Nabucodonosor o que deve suceder no decorrer dos tempos. Eis, portanto, teu sonho e as visões que se apresentaram a teu espírito quando estavas em teu leito.
29 'Your Majesty, on your bed your thoughts turned to what would happen in the future, and the Revealerof Mysteries disclosed to you what is to take place.	29 Senhor, os pensamentos que vieram ao teu espírito, enquanto estavas em teu leito, são previsões do futuro: aquele que revela os mistérios mostrou-te o futuro.
30 This mystery has been revealed to me, not that I am wiser than anyone else, but for this sole purpose:that the king should learn what it means, and that you should understand your inmost thoughts.	30 Quanto a mim, se esse mistério me foi desvendado, não é que haja mais sabedoria em mim do que nos outros homens, mas para eu dar ao rei a interpretação, a fim de que se faça luz nos pensamentos do teu coração.
31 'You have had a vision, Your Majesty; this is what you saw: a statue, a great statue of extremebrightness, stood before you, terrible to see.	31 Senhor: contemplavas, e eis que uma grande, uma enorme estátua erguia-se diante de ti; era de um magnífico esplendor, mas de aspecto aterrador.
32 The head of this statue was of fine gold, its chest and arms were of silver, its belly and thighs ofbronze,	32 Sua cabeça era de fino ouro, seu peito e braços de prata, seu ventre e quadris de bronze,
33 its legs of iron, its feet part iron, part clay.	33 suas pernas de ferro, seus pés metade de ferro e metade de barro.
34 While you were gazing, a stone broke away, untouched by any hand, and struck the statue, struck itsfeet of iron and clay and shattered them.	34 Contemplavas {essa estátua} quando uma pedra se descolou da montanha, sem intervenção de mão alguma, veio bater nos pés, que eram de ferro e barro, e os triturou.
35 Then, iron and clay, bronze, silver and gold, al broke into pieces as fine as chaff on the threshing-floorin summer. The wind blew them away, leaving not a trace behind. And the stone that had struck the statue grewinto a great mountain, fil ing the whole world.	35 Então o ferro, o barro, o bronze, a prata e o ouro foram com a mesma pancada reduzidos a migalhas, e, como a palha que voa da eira durante o verão, foram levados pelo vento sem deixar traço algum, enquanto que a pedra que havia batido na estátua tornou-se uma alta montanha, ocupando toda a região.
36 This was the dream; we shal now explain to the king what it means.	36 Eis o sonho. Agora vamos dar ao rei a interpretação.
37 'You, Your Majesty, king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given sovereignty, power, strengthand honour-	37 Senhor: tu que és o rei dos reis, a quem o Deus dos céus deu realeza, poder, força e glória;
38 human beings, wild animals, birds of the air, wherever they live, he has entrusted to your rule, makingyou king of them al -- you are the golden head.	38 a quem ele deu o domínio, onde quer que habitem, sobre os homens, os animais terrestres e os pássaros do céu, tu és a cabeça de ouro.
39 And, after you, another kingdom wil rise, not as great as yours, and then a third, of bronze, which wilrule the whole world.	39 Depois de ti surgirá um outro reino menor que o teu, depois um terceiro reino, o de bronze, que dominará toda a terra.
40 There wil be a fourth kingdom, hard as iron, as iron that pulverises and crushes al . Like iron thatbreaks everything to pieces, it wil crush and break all the earlier kingdoms.	40 Um quarto reino será forte como o ferro: do mesmo modo que o ferro esmaga e tritura tudo, da mesma maneira ele esmagará e pulverizará todos os outros.
41 The feet you saw, part earthenware, part iron, are a kingdom which wil be split in two, but which wilretain something of the strength of iron, just as you saw the iron and the clay of the earthenware mixed together.	41 Os pés e os dedos, parte de terra argilosa de modelar, parte de ferro, indicam que esse reino será dividido: haverá nele algo da solidez do ferro, já que viste ferro misturado ao barro.
42 The feet were part iron, part potter's clay: the kingdom wil be partly strong and partly brittle.	42 Mas os dedos, metade de ferro e metade de barro, mostram que esse reino será ao mesmo tempo sólido e frágil.
43 And just as you saw the iron and the clay of the earthenware mixed together, so the two wil be mixedtogether in human seed; but they wil not hold together any more than iron wil blend with clay.	43 Se viste o ferro misturado ao barro, é que as duas partes se aliarão por casamentos, sem porém se fundirem inteiramente, tal como o ferro que não se amalgama com o barro.
44 In the days of those kings, the God of heaven wil set up a kingdom which wil never be destroyed, andthis kingdom wil not pass into the hands of another race: it will shatter and absorb all the previous kingdoms anditself last for ever-	44 No tempo desses reis, o Deus dos céus suscitará um reino que jamais será destruído e cuja soberania jamais passará a outro povo: destruirá e aniquilará todos os outros, enquanto que ele subsistirá eternamente.
45 just as you saw a stone, untouched by hand, break away from the mountain and reduce iron, bronze,earthenware, silver and gold to powder. The Great God has shown the king what is to take place. The dream istrue, the interpretation exact.'	45 Foi o que pudeste ver na pedra deslocando-se da montanha sem a intervenção de mão alguma, e reduzindo a migalhas o ferro, o bronze, o barro, a prata e o ouro. Deus, que é grande, dá a conhecer ao rei a sucessão dos acontecimentos. O sonho é bem exato, e sua interpretação é digna de fé.
46 At this, King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel; he gave orders for Daniel to be offered an oblation and a fragrant sacrifice.	46 Nesse instante, o rei Nabucodonosor atirou-se de rosto em terra, prostrado diante de Daniel; depois ordenou que lhe fossem oferecidos oblações e perfumes.
47 The king said to Daniel, 'Your god is indeed the God of gods, the Master of kings, and the Revealer ofMysteries, since you have been able to reveal this mystery.'	47 Dirigindo-se a Daniel, disse o rei: Vosso Deus é verdadeiramente o Deus dos deuses, o Senhor dos reis; é também o revelador dos mistérios, já que pudeste revelar este.
48 The king then conferred high rank on Daniel and gave him many handsome presents. He also madehim governor of the whole province of Babylon and head of all the sages of Babylon.	48 O rei elevou Daniel em dignidade, deu-lhe numerosos e ricos presentes; constituiu-o governador de toda a província de Babilônia e o tornou chefe supremo de todos os sábios de Babilônia.
49 At Daniel's request, the king entrusted the affairs of the province of Babylon to Shadrach, Meshachand Abed-Nego; Daniel himself remained in attendance on the king.	49 Daniel pediu ao rei e confiou a Sidrac, Misac e Abdênago a administração da província de Babilônia. E Daniel permaneceu na corte real.
