1 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had a series of dreams; he was perturbed by this andsleep deserted him.	1 - Nell'anno secondo del suo regno, Nabucodonosor ebbe un sogno che gli lasciò lo spirito agitato, ma ciò che aveva sognato gli era sfuggito.
2 The king then had magicians and soothsayers, sorcerers and Chaldaeans summoned to tel him whathis dreams meant. They arrived and stood in the king's presence.	2 Allora, il re ordinò che si convocassero gl'indovini, i magi, i fattucchieri e i Caldei, affinchè esponessero al re i suoi sogni; ed essendo essi venuti, si posero nella presenza del re.
3 The king said to them, 'I have had a dream, and my mind is troubled by a wish to understand it.'	3 E il re disse: «Ho veduto un sogno, e sono rimasto così sconvolto nella mente, che non so più che cosa abbia veduto».
4 The Chaldaeans answered the king: 'May your majesty live for ever! Tel your servants the dream, andwe shal reveal its meaning for you.'	4 I Caldei risposero al re in siriaco: «O re, vivi in eterno! Racconta il sogno ai tuoi servi e noi ne daremo la spiegazione».
5 The king answered the Chaldaeans, 'This is my firm resolve: if you cannot tel me what I dreamt andwhat it means, I shal have you torn limb from limb and your houses turned into dunghil s.	5 Rispose il re ai Caldei dicendo: «Ho già pronunziato la sentenza; se non mi indicherete il sogno insieme colla sua interpretazione, voi perirete e le vostre case saranno rese luoghi pubblici.
6 If, on the other hand, you can tel me what I dreamt and what it means, I shal give you presents,rewards and high honour. So tel me what I dreamt and what it means.'	6 Che se mi esporrete il sogno colla sua interpretazione, riceverete da me premi, doni e onore in copia; indicatemi dunque il sogno e la sua spiegazione».
7 A second time they said, 'Let the king tel his dream to his servants, and we shal reveal its meaning.'	7 Risposero una seconda volta: «Il re dica il sogno ai suoi servi, e noi daremo la spiegazione».
8 But the king retorted, 'It is plain to me that you are trying to gain time, knowing my proclaimed resolve.	8 Il re rispose e disse: «Mi accorgo bene che volete guadagnar tempo, sapendo che ho già pronunziato la sentenza.
9 If you do not interpret my dream for me, there will be but one sentence passed on you al ; you haveagreed among yourselves to make me misleading and tortuous speeches while the time goes by. So tel mewhat my dream was, and then I shal know whether you can interpret it.'	9 Se dunque non mi indicate il sogno, la sola conclusione riguardo a voi è questa: che comporrete anche una finta spiegazione e piena di falsità, tanto per intrattenermi a parole e far passare il tempo. Ditemi ora il sogno, e così saprò che anche la sua interpretazione è vera».
10 The Chaldaeans answered the king, 'Nobody in the world could explain the king's problem; what ismore, no other king, governor or chief would think of putting such a question to any magician, soothsayer orChaldaean.	10 I Caldei rispondendo al re dissero: «Non v'è uomo sulla terra che possa compiere il tuo mandato; nè alcuno dei re, sia pure grande e potente, può esigere una cosa di tal fatta da chiunque sia indovino o mago o Caldeo!
11 The question the king asks is difficult, and no one can find the king an answer to it, except the gods,whose dwelling is not with mortals.'	11 Perchè la cosa che tu chiedi, o re, è ardua, e non si trova alcuno che la indichi; tolti gli dèi, che sono fuori dal consorzio degli uomini».
12 At this the king flew into a rage and ordered al the Babylonian sages to be put to death.	12 Ciò udito il re, montato in furore e collera grande, ordinò che fossero fatti perire tutti i sapienti di Babilonia.
13 On publication of the decree to have the sages killed, search was made for Daniel and hiscompanions to have them put to death.	13 Promulgata la sentenza, i sapienti venivano trucidati e si ricercava Daniele e i suoi compagni perchè dovevano perire anch'essi.
14 Then, with shrewd and cautious words, Daniel approached Arioch, the king's chief executioner, whenhe was on his way to kil the Babylonian sages.	14 Allora Daniele volle informarsi della legge e del decreto da Arioc, capo delle milizie del re, che aveva il mandato di uccidere i sapienti di Babilonia.
15 To this royal official Arioch he said, 'Why has the king issued such a harsh decree?' Arioch explainedmatters to Daniel,	15 E lo interrogò, come quello che aveva ricevuto il mandato dal re, per qual motivo una sentenza così crudele fosse stata emanata da parte del re. Appena Arioc ebbe esposto a Daniele il fatto,
16 and Daniel went off to ask the king for a stay of execution to give him the opportunity of revealing his interpretation to the king.	16 Daniele presentatosi, pregò il re di dargli tempo che gli avrebbe indicata la soluzione.
17 Daniel then went home and told his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah what had happened,	17 Poi rientrò in casa sua, e ad Anania, Misaele e Azaria raccontò il fatto
18 urging them to beg the God of heaven to show his mercy and explain the mysterious secret, so thatDaniel and his friends might be spared the fate of the other Babylonian sages.	18 disponendosi a impetrare misericordia al cospetto del Dio del cielo sopra cotesto arcano e che Daniele e i suoi compagni non perissero con gli altri sapienti di Babilonia.
19 The mystery was then revealed to Daniel in a night-vision, and Daniel blessed the God of heaven.	19 Gli fu allora rivelato l'arcano durante la notte, in una visione; e Daniele benedisse il Dio del cielo; e pronunciò queste parole:
20 This is what Daniel said: May the name of God be blessed for ever and ever, since wisdom and powerare his alone.	20 «Sia benedetto il nome del Signore, pel volgere di tutti i secoli, perchè sua è la sapienza e la fortezza.
21 It is he who controls the procession of times and seasons, who makes and unmakes kings, whoconfers wisdom on the wise, and knowledge on those with discernment,	21 Egli muta i tempi e le età, trasferisce i regni e li conferma, dà la sapienza ai sapienti e la scienza a quei che attendono alla disciplina.
22 who uncovers depths and mysteries, who knows what lies in darkness; and light dwel s with him.	22 Egli rivela le cose arcane e recondite e quelle riposte nelle tenebre le conosce, e con lui è la luce.
23 To you, God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise for having given me wisdom and strength: to meyou have explained what we asked you, to us you have explained the king's problem.	23 A te, o Dio dei padri nostri, la mia professione d'onore e di lode, perchè mi hai dato sapienza e fortezza, e ora mi hai fatto sapere quello che ti abbiamo domandato, perchè mi hai svelato il fatto del re».
24 So Daniel went to see Arioch, whom the king had made responsible for putting the Babylonian sagesto death. Going in, he said, 'Do not put the Babylonian sages to death. Take me into the king's presence and Iwil reveal the meaning to the king.'	24 Dopo ciò, recatosi Daniele da Arioc, che il re aveva deputato per far perire i sapienti di Babilonia, gli parlò così: «Non far perire i sapienti di Babilonia; fammi entrare alla presenza del re ed io esporrò al re la soluzione».
25 Arioch lost no time in bringing Daniel to the king. 'Among the exiles from Judah,' he said, 'I havediscovered a man who can reveal the meaning to the king.'	25 Allora Arioc, con tutta premura, introdusse Daniele dal re e gli disse: «Ho trovato un uomo tra gli esiliati di Giuda che esporrà al re la soluzione».
26 The king said to Daniel (who had been given the name Belteshazzar), 'Can you tel me what I dreamtand what it means?'	26 Il re si rivolse e parlò a Daniele, che egli chiamava Baltassar: «Credi tu veramente di potermi indicare il sogno che ho veduto e la sua interpretazione?».
27 Facing the king, Daniel replied, 'None of the sages, soothsayers, magicians or exorcists has beenable to tell the king the truth of the mystery which the king has propounded;	27 E Daniele rispondendo davanti al re disse: «L'arcano, su cui il re fa ricerca, non valgono a indicarlo al re i sapienti, i magi, gli indovini e gli aruspici;
28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries and who has shown King Nebuchadnezzar whatis to take place in the final days. These, then, are the dream and the visions that passed through your head asyou lay in bed:	28 ma nel cielo è un Dio che svela i misteri, e ti ha mostrato, o re Nabucodonosor, le cose che avverranno nei tempi futuri. Il tuo sogno e le visioni che ti passarono pel capo nel tuo letto erano a questo modo:
29 'Your Majesty, on your bed your thoughts turned to what would happen in the future, and the Revealerof Mysteries disclosed to you what is to take place.	29 Tu, o re, nel tuo letto, hai cominciato a pensare sulle cose dell'avvenire, e colui che svela i misteri ti fece vedere le cose che devono venire.
30 This mystery has been revealed to me, not that I am wiser than anyone else, but for this sole purpose:that the king should learn what it means, and that you should understand your inmost thoughts.	30 E anche a me è stato rivelato questo segreto, non per sapienza ch'io abbia superiore agli altri viventi, ma affinchè fosse manifesta al re l'interpretazione e tu riconoscessi i pensieri della tua mente.
31 'You have had a vision, Your Majesty; this is what you saw: a statue, a great statue of extremebrightness, stood before you, terrible to see.	31 Tu, o re, guardavi, ed ecco come una grande statua; quella statua enorme e di statura sublime, stava di fronte a te e il suo aspetto era terribile.
32 The head of this statue was of fine gold, its chest and arms were of silver, its belly and thighs ofbronze,	32 Il capo di questa statua era di oro puro; il petto e le braccia di argento; il ventre e le cosce erano di bronzo;
33 its legs of iron, its feet part iron, part clay.	33 le gambe, di ferro; e dei piedi, una parte era di ferro e una parte di terracotta.
34 While you were gazing, a stone broke away, untouched by any hand, and struck the statue, struck itsfeet of iron and clay and shattered them.	34 Tu guardavi ciò, e in quel mentre, senza opera di mani, si staccò da un monte una pietra e percosse la statua nei piedi di ferro e di terracotta e li spezzò.
35 Then, iron and clay, bronze, silver and gold, al broke into pieces as fine as chaff on the threshing-floorin summer. The wind blew them away, leaving not a trace behind. And the stone that had struck the statue grewinto a great mountain, fil ing the whole world.	35 Allora tutto andò in frantumi, ferro, creta, bronzo, argento ed oro e si ridusse come il tritume sopra un'aia d'estate; furono rapiti via dal vento, nè se ne trovò più traccia: e la pietra che aveva percosso la statua, diventò un monte così grande che riempì tutta la terra.
36 This was the dream; we shal now explain to the king what it means.	36 Questo è il sogno; ed ora ne diremo davanti a te, o re, l'interpretazione.
37 'You, Your Majesty, king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given sovereignty, power, strengthand honour-	37 Tu sei il re dei re, e il Dio del cielo ti ha dato regno e potenza e dominio e gloria;
38 human beings, wild animals, birds of the air, wherever they live, he has entrusted to your rule, makingyou king of them al -- you are the golden head.	38 e tutte le regioni, con gli uomini, le bestie selvatiche, gli stessi uccelli dell'aria che le abitano, ha dato in mano tua; tutto ha collocato sotto il tuo dominio: tu dunque sei il capo d'oro.
39 And, after you, another kingdom wil rise, not as great as yours, and then a third, of bronze, which wilrule the whole world.	39 E dopo di te, sorgerà un altro regno inferiore a te, d'argento; e poi un terzo altro regno di bronzo che avrà l'impero di tutta la terra.
40 There wil be a fourth kingdom, hard as iron, as iron that pulverises and crushes al . Like iron thatbreaks everything to pieces, it wil crush and break all the earlier kingdoms.	40 Il quarto regno sarà come il ferro: come il ferro stritola e doma tutto, così questo, stritolerà e infrangerà tutte quest'altre cose.
41 The feet you saw, part earthenware, part iron, are a kingdom which wil be split in two, but which wilretain something of the strength of iron, just as you saw the iron and the clay of the earthenware mixed together.	41 Ma quanto a ciò che hai veduto dei piedi e delle dita, parte di terra cotta e parte di ferro, sarà un regno diviso, ma tuttavia di provenienza del ferro, come hai veduto, ferro cioè misto a terra cotta di argilla.
42 The feet were part iron, part potter's clay: the kingdom wil be partly strong and partly brittle.	42 E le dita dei piedi in parte di ferro e in parte di creta indicano che il regno sarà in parte solido e in parte fragile.
43 And just as you saw the iron and the clay of the earthenware mixed together, so the two wil be mixedtogether in human seed; but they wil not hold together any more than iron wil blend with clay.	43 E ciò che hai veduto del ferro mescolato alla terra cotta di argilla vuol dire, che si mescoleranno per seme umano, ma non faranno lega, come il ferro non fa lega colla terra cotta.
44 In the days of those kings, the God of heaven wil set up a kingdom which wil never be destroyed, andthis kingdom wil not pass into the hands of another race: it will shatter and absorb all the previous kingdoms anditself last for ever-	44 E al tempo di quei regni, il Dio dei cieli susciterà un regno che non sarà mai in eterno distrutto e il suo impero non sarà trasferito ad altro popolo; annienterà e farà scomparire tutti cotesti regni ed esso durerà in eterno,
45 just as you saw a stone, untouched by hand, break away from the mountain and reduce iron, bronze,earthenware, silver and gold to powder. The Great God has shown the king what is to take place. The dream istrue, the interpretation exact.'	45 come hai visto che, senza opera di mani, da un monte si staccò una pietra e infranse l'argilla e il ferro e il bronzo e l'argento e l'oro. Il sommo Dio ha fatto vedere al re quello che sarà per avvenire in seguito; il sogno è vero, e fedele è la sua interpretazione».
46 At this, King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel; he gave orders for Daniel to be offered an oblation and a fragrant sacrifice.	46 Allora Nabucodonosor si prostrò sulla sua faccia e adorò Daniele e ordinò che gli venissero offerti sacrifizi e incenso.
47 The king said to Daniel, 'Your god is indeed the God of gods, the Master of kings, and the Revealer ofMysteries, since you have been able to reveal this mystery.'	47 Dopo, presa la parola, disse il re a Daniele: «Veramente il vostro Dio è il Dio degli dèi e il Signore dei re, rivelatore dei misteri, perchè tu hai potuto sciogliere questo arcano».
48 The king then conferred high rank on Daniel and gave him many handsome presents. He also madehim governor of the whole province of Babylon and head of all the sages of Babylon.	48 E allora il re elevò Daniele in alto grado, e gli diede molti e grandi doni, e lo stabilì governatore sopra tutte le province di Babilonia, e capo dei magistrati sopra tutti i sapienti di Babilonia.
49 At Daniel's request, the king entrusted the affairs of the province of Babylon to Shadrach, Meshachand Abed-Nego; Daniel himself remained in attendance on the king.	49 Il re, poi dietro domanda di Daniele, stabilì per gli affari della provincia di Babilonia Sidrac, Misac e Abdenago, e Daniele stava alla corte del re.
