Daniel 2

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had a series of dreams; he was perturbed by this andsleep deserted him.	1 En l'an deux du règne de Nabuchodonosor, Nabuchodonosor eut des songes, son esprit en fut troublé,le sommeil le quitta.
2 The king then had magicians and soothsayers, sorcerers and Chaldaeans summoned to tel him whathis dreams meant. They arrived and stood in the king's presence.	2 Le roi ordonna d'appeler magiciens et devins, enchanteurs et Chaldéens pour dire au roi quels avaientété ses songes. Ils vinrent donc et se tinrent devant le roi.
3 The king said to them, 'I have had a dream, and my mind is troubled by a wish to understand it.'	3 Le roi leur dit: "J'ai fait un songe et mon esprit s'est troublé du désir de comprendre ce rêve."
4 The Chaldaeans answered the king: 'May your majesty live for ever! Tel your servants the dream, andwe shal reveal its meaning for you.'	4 Les Chaldéens répondirent au roi: (Araméen) "O roi, vis à jamais! Raconte le songe à tes serviteurset nous t'en découvrirons l'interprétation."
5 The king answered the Chaldaeans, 'This is my firm resolve: if you cannot tel me what I dreamt andwhat it means, I shal have you torn limb from limb and your houses turned into dunghil s.	5 Le roi répondit et dit aux Chaldéens: "Que mon propos vous soit connu: si vous ne me faites pasconnaître le songe et son interprétation, on vous mettra en pièces et vos maisons seront changées en bourbier.
6 If, on the other hand, you can tel me what I dreamt and what it means, I shal give you presents,rewards and high honour. So tel me what I dreamt and what it means.'	6 Mais si vous me découvrez mon songe et son interprétation, vous recevrez de moi présents etcadeaux et grands honneurs. Ainsi donc découvrez-moi mon songe et son interprétation."
7 A second time they said, 'Let the king tel his dream to his servants, and we shal reveal its meaning.'	7 Ils reprirent: "Que le roi dise le songe à ses serviteurs et nous lui en découvrirons l'interprétation."
8 But the king retorted, 'It is plain to me that you are trying to gain time, knowing my proclaimed resolve.	8 Mais le roi: "Je vois bien que vous voulez gagner du temps, sachant que mon propos est proclamé.
9 If you do not interpret my dream for me, there will be but one sentence passed on you al ; you haveagreed among yourselves to make me misleading and tortuous speeches while the time goes by. So tel mewhat my dream was, and then I shal know whether you can interpret it.'	9 Si vous ne me faites pas connaître mon songe, une même sentence vous sera appliquée; vous vousêtes entendus pour forger des discours mensongers et pervers devant moi pendant que le temps passe. Aussi,rapportez-moi mon songe et je saurai que vous pouvez m'en découvrir le sens."
10 The Chaldaeans answered the king, 'Nobody in the world could explain the king's problem; what ismore, no other king, governor or chief would think of putting such a question to any magician, soothsayer orChaldaean.	10 Les Chaldéens répondirent au roi: "Il n'est personne sur terre pour découvrir la chose du roi. Etaussi bien, il n'est roi, gouverneur ou chef pour poser pareille question à magicien, devin ou Chaldéen.
11 The question the king asks is difficult, and no one can find the king an answer to it, except the gods,whose dwelling is not with mortals.'	11 La question que pose le roi est difficile et nul ne peut la découvrir devant le roi, sinon les dieux dontla demeure n'est point parmi les êtres de chair."
12 At this the king flew into a rage and ordered al the Babylonian sages to be put to death.	12 Alors le roi s'emporta furieusement et ordonna de faire périr tous les sages de Babylone.
13 On publication of the decree to have the sages killed, search was made for Daniel and hiscompanions to have them put to death.	13 Quand le décret de tuer les sages fut promulgué, on chercha Daniel et ses compagnons pour les tuer.
14 Then, with shrewd and cautious words, Daniel approached Arioch, the king's chief executioner, whenhe was on his way to kil the Babylonian sages.	14 Mais Daniel s'adressa en paroles prudentes et avisées à Aryok, chef des bourreaux du roi, en routepour tuer les sages de Babylone.
15 To this royal official Arioch he said, 'Why has the king issued such a harsh decree?' Arioch explainedmatters to Daniel,	15 Il dit à Aryok, officier du roi: "Pourquoi le roi a-t-il rendu si pressant décret?" Aryok raconta lachose à Daniel,
16 and Daniel went off to ask the king for a stay of execution to give him the opportunity of revealing his interpretation to the king.	16 et Daniel s'en alla demander au roi de lui accorder un délai pour lui permettre de découvrir au roison interprétation.
17 Daniel then went home and told his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah what had happened,	17 Daniel rentra dans sa maison et fit part de la chose à Ananias, Misaël et Azarias, ses compagnons,
18 urging them to beg the God of heaven to show his mercy and explain the mysterious secret, so thatDaniel and his friends might be spared the fate of the other Babylonian sages.	18 les engageant à implorer la miséricorde du Dieu du Ciel au sujet de ce mystère, pour qu'il soitépargné à Daniel et à ses compagnons de périr avec les autres sages de Babylone.
19 The mystery was then revealed to Daniel in a night-vision, and Daniel blessed the God of heaven.	19 Alors le mystère fut révélé à Daniel dans une vision nocturne. Et Daniel fit bénédiction au Dieu duCiel.
20 This is what Daniel said: May the name of God be blessed for ever and ever, since wisdom and powerare his alone.	20 Daniel prit la parole et dit: "Que soit le Nom de Dieu béni de siècle en siècle, car à lui la sagesse etla force.
21 It is he who controls the procession of times and seasons, who makes and unmakes kings, whoconfers wisdom on the wise, and knowledge on those with discernment,	21 C'est lui qui fait alterner périodes et temps, qui fait tomber les rois, qui établit les rois, qui donneaux sages la sagesse et la science à ceux qui savent discerner.
22 who uncovers depths and mysteries, who knows what lies in darkness; and light dwel s with him.	22 Lui qui révèle profondeurs et secrets connaît ce qui est dans les ténèbres, et la lumière réside auprèsde lui.
23 To you, God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise for having given me wisdom and strength: to meyou have explained what we asked you, to us you have explained the king's problem.	23 A toi, Dieu de mes pères, je rends grâces et je te loue de m'avoir accordé sagesse et force: voici quetu m'as fait connaître ce que nous t'avons demandé; les choses du roi, tu nous les as fait connaître."
24 So Daniel went to see Arioch, whom the king had made responsible for putting the Babylonian sagesto death. Going in, he said, 'Do not put the Babylonian sages to death. Take me into the king's presence and Iwil reveal the meaning to the king.'	24 Daniel s'en fut donc chez Aryok que le roi avait chargé de faire périr les sages de Babylone. Il entraet lui dit: "Ne fais pas périr les sages de Babylone. Fais-moi pénétrer devant le roi et je révélerai au roil'interprétation."
25 Arioch lost no time in bringing Daniel to the king. 'Among the exiles from Judah,' he said, 'I havediscovered a man who can reveal the meaning to the king.'	25 Aryok s'empressa de faire paraître Daniel devant le roi et lui dit: "J'ai trouvé parmi les gens de ladéportation de Juda un homme qui fera connaître au roi son interprétation."
26 The king said to Daniel (who had been given the name Belteshazzar), 'Can you tel me what I dreamtand what it means?'	26 Le roi dit à Daniel (surnommé Baltassar): "Es-tu capable de me faire connaître le songe que j'ai euet son interprétation?"
27 Facing the king, Daniel replied, 'None of the sages, soothsayers, magicians or exorcists has beenable to tell the king the truth of the mystery which the king has propounded;	27 Daniel répondit devant le roi: "Le mystère que poursuit le roi, sages, devins, magiciens et exorcistesn'ont pu le découvrir au roi;
28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries and who has shown King Nebuchadnezzar whatis to take place in the final days. These, then, are the dream and the visions that passed through your head asyou lay in bed:	28 mais il y a un Dieu dans le ciel, qui révèle les mystères et qui a fait connaître au roiNabuchodonosor ce qui doit arriver à la fin des jours. Ton songe et les visions de ta tête sur ta couche, les voici:
29 'Your Majesty, on your bed your thoughts turned to what would happen in the future, and the Revealerof Mysteries disclosed to you what is to take place.	29 "O roi, sur ta couche, tes pensées s'élevèrent concernant ce qui doit arriver plus tard, et le révélateurdes mystères t'a fait connaître ce qui doit arriver.
30 This mystery has been revealed to me, not that I am wiser than anyone else, but for this sole purpose:that the king should learn what it means, and that you should understand your inmost thoughts.	30 A moi, sans que j'aie plus de sagesse que quiconque, ce mystère a été révélé, à seule fin de fairesavoir au roi son sens, et pour que tu connaisses les pensées de ton coeur.
31 'You have had a vision, Your Majesty; this is what you saw: a statue, a great statue of extremebrightness, stood before you, terrible to see.	31 "Tu as eu, ô roi, une vision. Voici: une statue, une grande statue, extrêmement brillante, se dressaitdevant toi, terrible à voir.
32 The head of this statue was of fine gold, its chest and arms were of silver, its belly and thighs ofbronze,	32 Cette statue, sa tête était d'or fin, sa poitrine et ses bras étaient d'argent, son ventre et ses cuisses debronze,
33 its legs of iron, its feet part iron, part clay.	33 ses jambes de fer, ses pieds partie fer et partie argile.
34 While you were gazing, a stone broke away, untouched by any hand, and struck the statue, struck itsfeet of iron and clay and shattered them.	34 Tu regardais: soudain une pierre se détacha, sans que main l'eût touchée, et vint frapper la statue,ses pieds de fer et d'argile, et les brisa.
35 Then, iron and clay, bronze, silver and gold, al broke into pieces as fine as chaff on the threshing-floorin summer. The wind blew them away, leaving not a trace behind. And the stone that had struck the statue grewinto a great mountain, fil ing the whole world.	35 Alors se brisèrent, tout à la fois, fer et argile, bronze, argent et or, devenus semblables à la bale surl'aire en été; le vent les emporta sans laisser de traces. Et la pierre qui avait frappé la statue devint une grandemontagne qui remplit toute la terre.
36 This was the dream; we shal now explain to the king what it means.	36 Tel fut le songe; et son interprétation, nous la dirons devant le roi.
37 'You, Your Majesty, king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given sovereignty, power, strengthand honour-	37 C'est toi, ô roi, roi des rois, à qui le Dieu du Ciel a donné royaume, pouvoir, puissance et honneur --
38 human beings, wild animals, birds of the air, wherever they live, he has entrusted to your rule, makingyou king of them al -- you are the golden head.	38 les enfants des hommes, les bêtes des champs, les oiseaux du ciel, en quelque lieu qu'ils demeurent,il les a remis entre tes mains et t'a fait souverain sur eux tous --, la tête d'or, c'est toi.
39 And, after you, another kingdom wil rise, not as great as yours, and then a third, of bronze, which wilrule the whole world.	39 Et après toi se dressera un autre royaume, inférieur à toi, et un troisième royaume ensuite, debronze, qui dominera la terre entière.
40 There wil be a fourth kingdom, hard as iron, as iron that pulverises and crushes al . Like iron thatbreaks everything to pieces, it wil crush and break all the earlier kingdoms.	40 Et il y aura un quatrième royaume, dur comme le fer, comme le fer qui réduit tout en poudre etécrase tout; comme le fer qui brise, il réduira en poudre et brisera tous ceux-là.
41 The feet you saw, part earthenware, part iron, are a kingdom which wil be split in two, but which wilretain something of the strength of iron, just as you saw the iron and the clay of the earthenware mixed together.	41 Ces pieds que tu as vus, partie terre cuite et partie fer, c'est un royaume qui sera divisé; il aura part àla force du fer, selon que tu as vu le fer mêlé à l'argile de la terre cuite.
42 The feet were part iron, part potter's clay: the kingdom wil be partly strong and partly brittle.	42 Les pieds, partie fer et partie argile de potier: le royaume sera partie fort et partie fragile.
43 And just as you saw the iron and the clay of the earthenware mixed together, so the two wil be mixedtogether in human seed; but they wil not hold together any more than iron wil blend with clay.	43 Selon que tu as vu le fer mêlé à l'argile de la terre cuite, ils se mêleront en semence d'homme, maisils ne tiendront pas ensemble, de même que le fer ne se mêle pas à l'argile.
44 In the days of those kings, the God of heaven wil set up a kingdom which wil never be destroyed, andthis kingdom wil not pass into the hands of another race: it will shatter and absorb all the previous kingdoms anditself last for ever-	44 Au temps de ces rois, le Dieu du Ciel dressera un royaume qui jamais ne sera détruit, et ce royaumene passera pas à un autre peuple. Il écrasera et anéantira tous ces royaumes, et lui-même subsistera à jamais:
45 just as you saw a stone, untouched by hand, break away from the mountain and reduce iron, bronze,earthenware, silver and gold to powder. The Great God has shown the king what is to take place. The dream istrue, the interpretation exact.'	45 de même, tu as vu une pierre se détacher de la montagne, sans que main l'eût touchée, et réduire enpoussière fer, bronze, terre cuite, argent et or. Le Grand Dieu a fait connaître au roi ce qui doit arriver. Tel estvéritablement le songe, et sûre en est l'interprétation."
46 At this, King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel; he gave orders for Daniel to be offered an oblation and a fragrant sacrifice.	46 Alors le roi Nabuchodonosor tomba face contre terre et se prosterna devant Daniel. Il ordonna qu'onlui offrît oblation et sacrifice d'agréable odeur.
47 The king said to Daniel, 'Your god is indeed the God of gods, the Master of kings, and the Revealer ofMysteries, since you have been able to reveal this mystery.'	47 Et le roi dit à Daniel: "En vérité votre dieu est le Dieu des dieux et le maître des rois, le révélateurdes mystères, puisque tu as pu révéler ce mystère."
48 The king then conferred high rank on Daniel and gave him many handsome presents. He also madehim governor of the whole province of Babylon and head of all the sages of Babylon.	48 Alors le roi conféra à Daniel un rang élevé et lui donna nombre de magnifiques présents. Il le fitgouverneur de toute la province de Babylone et supérieur de tous les sages de Babylone.
49 At Daniel's request, the king entrusted the affairs of the province of Babylon to Shadrach, Meshachand Abed-Nego; Daniel himself remained in attendance on the king.	49 Daniel demanda au roi d'assigner aux affaires de la province de Babylone Shadrak, Méshak etAbed-Nego, Daniel lui-même demeurant à la cour du roi.
