NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had a series of dreams; he was perturbed by this andsleep deserted him.	1 Nel secondo anno del suo regno, Nabucodònosor sognò. Il suo animo rimase turbato e il sonno l'abbandonò.
2 The king then had magicians and soothsayers, sorcerers and Chaldaeans summoned to tel him whathis dreams meant. They arrived and stood in the king's presence.	2 Il re dette ordine di convocare i maghi, gli indovini, gli incantatori e i caldei, perché richiamassero alla memoria del re il suo sogno. Al loro arrivo si presentarono alla presenza del re.
3 The king said to them, 'I have had a dream, and my mind is troubled by a wish to understand it.'	3 Il re disse loro: "Ho fatto un sogno e il mio spirito è turbato finché non conoscerò il sogno!".
4 The Chaldaeans answered the king: 'May your majesty live for ever! Tel your servants the dream, andwe shal reveal its meaning for you.'	4 I caldei risposero al re: "O re, vivi in eterno! Narra il sogno ai tuoi servi e noi daremo l'interpretazione!".
5 The king answered the Chaldaeans, 'This is my firm resolve: if you cannot tel me what I dreamt andwhat it means, I shal have you torn limb from limb and your houses turned into dunghil s.	5 Il re rispose ai caldei: "La mia decisione è manifesta: se non mi farete conoscere il sogno e il suo significato, sarete fatti a pezzi e le vostre case saranno ridotte a un cumulo di rovine.
6 If, on the other hand, you can tel me what I dreamt and what it means, I shal give you presents,rewards and high honour. So tel me what I dreamt and what it means.'	6 Se invece indicherete il sogno e il suo significato, riceverete da me doni, regali e molto onore. Perciò indicatemi il sogno e il suo significato!".
7 A second time they said, 'Let the king tel his dream to his servants, and we shal reveal its meaning.'	7 Essi insistettero di nuovo: "Il re dica il sogno ai suoi servi e noi daremo la sua interpretazione!".
8 But the king retorted, 'It is plain to me that you are trying to gain time, knowing my proclaimed resolve.	8 Ma il re rispose: "Io vedo bene che voi cercate di guadagnar tempo, perché vedete che il mio decreto è pronunziato.
9 If you do not interpret my dream for me, there will be but one sentence passed on you al ; you haveagreed among yourselves to make me misleading and tortuous speeches while the time goes by. So tel mewhat my dream was, and then I shal know whether you can interpret it.'	9 Che se voi non mi fate conoscere il sogno, la vostra intenzione comune è di inventare discorsi falsi e funesti davanti a me, finché il tempo passi. Ditemi dunque il sogno e io saprò che mi potete dare anche la sua interpretazione!".
10 The Chaldaeans answered the king, 'Nobody in the world could explain the king's problem; what ismore, no other king, governor or chief would think of putting such a question to any magician, soothsayer orChaldaean.	10 I caldei risposero al re e dissero: "Non c'è uomo sopra la terra che possa manifestare ciò che il re ordina; perciò mai nessun re, quantunque grande e potente, domandò una cosa simile a nessun mago o indovino o caldeo.
11 The question the king asks is difficult, and no one can find the king an answer to it, except the gods,whose dwelling is not with mortals.'	11 La cosa che il re domanda è difficile e non c'è nessuno che la possa manifestare al re, se non gli dèi la cui dimora non è fra gli uomini!".
12 At this the king flew into a rage and ordered al the Babylonian sages to be put to death.	12 Allora il re si irritò e si adirò violentemente e ordinò di sterminare tutti i sapienti di Babilonia.
13 On publication of the decree to have the sages killed, search was made for Daniel and hiscompanions to have them put to death.	13 Quando fu emanato il decreto di uccidere i sapienti, si cercava di uccidere Daniele e i suoi compagni.
14 Then, with shrewd and cautious words, Daniel approached Arioch, the king's chief executioner, whenhe was on his way to kil the Babylonian sages.	14 Allora Daniele si rivolse con parole sagge e prudenti ad Ariòch, capo delle guardie del re, che era uscito per uccidere i sapienti di Babilonia.
15 To this royal official Arioch he said, 'Why has the king issued such a harsh decree?' Arioch explainedmatters to Daniel,	15 Egli domandò ad Ariòch, comandante del re: "Perché un decreto così severo da parte del re?". Allora Ariòch spiegò la cosa a Daniele,
16 and Daniel went off to ask the king for a stay of execution to give him the opportunity of revealing his interpretation to the king.	16 e Daniele entrò dal re per chiedere che gli concedesse uno spazio di tempo ed egli avrebbe dato al re l'interpretazione.
17 Daniel then went home and told his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah what had happened,	17 Poi Daniele andò a casa sua e informò i suoi compagni Anania, Misaele e Azaria della cosa,
18 urging them to beg the God of heaven to show his mercy and explain the mysterious secret, so thatDaniel and his friends might be spared the fate of the other Babylonian sages.	18 perché implorassero misericordia dal Dio del cielo intorno a questo mistero, cosicché non venissero messi a morte Daniele e i suoi compagni insieme agli altri sapienti di Babilonia.
19 The mystery was then revealed to Daniel in a night-vision, and Daniel blessed the God of heaven.	19 Allora a Daniele in una visione notturna fu rivelato il mistero. Perciò Daniele benedì il Dio del cielo
20 This is what Daniel said: May the name of God be blessed for ever and ever, since wisdom and powerare his alone.	20 e disse: "Sia benedetto il nome di Dio di secolo in secolo, perché sua è la sapienza e la forza.
21 It is he who controls the procession of times and seasons, who makes and unmakes kings, whoconfers wisdom on the wise, and knowledge on those with discernment,	21 E' lui che muta tempi e stagioni, che atterra e fa risorgere i re, che dona la sapienza ai sapienti e la scienza a coloro che sanno.
22 who uncovers depths and mysteries, who knows what lies in darkness; and light dwel s with him.	22 E' lui che svela le cose nascoste e segrete, conosce ciò che è nelle tenebre e la luce dimora con lui.
23 To you, God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise for having given me wisdom and strength: to meyou have explained what we asked you, to us you have explained the king's problem.	23 A te, Dio dei miei padri, rendo grazie e lode, ché sapienza e forza mi hai dato e mi fai conoscere ciò che ti abbiamo chiesto, facendoci conoscere il sogno del re".
24 So Daniel went to see Arioch, whom the king had made responsible for putting the Babylonian sagesto death. Going in, he said, 'Do not put the Babylonian sages to death. Take me into the king's presence and Iwil reveal the meaning to the king.'	24 Quindi Daniele andò da Ariòch che il re aveva incaricato di uccidere i sapienti di Babilonia e gli disse: "Non uccidere i sapienti di Babilonia! Conducimi dal re e darò al re l'interpretazione!".
25 Arioch lost no time in bringing Daniel to the king. 'Among the exiles from Judah,' he said, 'I havediscovered a man who can reveal the meaning to the king.'	25 Ariòch introdusse in fretta Daniele dal re e così gli disse: "Ho trovato un tale tra i deportati di Giuda che farà conoscere al re l'interpretazione".
26 The king said to Daniel (who had been given the name Belteshazzar), 'Can you tel me what I dreamtand what it means?'	26 Il re domandò a Daniele, il cui nome era Baltazzàr: "Sei tu capace di farmi conoscere il sogno che ho avuto e il suo significato?".
27 Facing the king, Daniel replied, 'None of the sages, soothsayers, magicians or exorcists has beenable to tell the king the truth of the mystery which the king has propounded;	27 Daniele rispose al re: "Il mistero che il re domanda non possono farlo conoscere al re sapienti, indovini, maghi, astrologi.
28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries and who has shown King Nebuchadnezzar whatis to take place in the final days. These, then, are the dream and the visions that passed through your head asyou lay in bed:	28 Ma c'è un Dio nel cielo che rivela i misteri e fa conoscere al re Nabucodònosor che cosa avverrà alla fine dei giorni. Il tuo sogno e la visione della tua mente, mentre eri sopra il tuo letto, è questa.
29 'Your Majesty, on your bed your thoughts turned to what would happen in the future, and the Revealerof Mysteries disclosed to you what is to take place.	29 O re, i pensieri che ti assillarono mentre eri sopra il tuo letto riguardano il futuro, e colui che rivela i misteri ti fa conoscere ciò che sarà.
30 This mystery has been revealed to me, not that I am wiser than anyone else, but for this sole purpose:that the king should learn what it means, and that you should understand your inmost thoughts.	30 A me, poi, è stato rivelato questo mistero non perché ho più sapienza di tutti gli altri viventi, ma perché sia data al re l'interpretazione e perché tu comprenda i pensieri del tuo cuore.
31 'You have had a vision, Your Majesty; this is what you saw: a statue, a great statue of extremebrightness, stood before you, terrible to see.	31 Tu, o re, hai avuto una visione. Ecco una statua. Quella statua era grandiosa e il suo splendore era straordinario; essa stava davanti a te e il suo aspetto era terribile.
32 The head of this statue was of fine gold, its chest and arms were of silver, its belly and thighs ofbronze,	32 La statua aveva la testa d'oro puro, il petto e le braccia d'argento, il ventre e le cosce di bronzo;
33 its legs of iron, its feet part iron, part clay.	33 le sue gambe erano di ferro e i suoi piedi erano parte di ferro e parte d'argilla.
34 While you were gazing, a stone broke away, untouched by any hand, and struck the statue, struck itsfeet of iron and clay and shattered them.	34 Tu stavi guardando, quando si staccò dalla montagna una pietra, senza l'intervento di mani, colpì la statua sui suoi piedi ch'erano di ferro e di argilla e li frantumò.
35 Then, iron and clay, bronze, silver and gold, al broke into pieces as fine as chaff on the threshing-floorin summer. The wind blew them away, leaving not a trace behind. And the stone that had struck the statue grewinto a great mountain, fil ing the whole world.	35 Allora si infransero in un istante ferro, argilla, bronzo, argento e oro e diventarono come pula nelle aie durante l'estate; il vento li portò via e di loro non si trovò più nessuna traccia. Invece la pietra che aveva infranto la statua diventò una grande montagna che riempì tutta la terra.
36 This was the dream; we shal now explain to the king what it means.	36 Questo il sogno; il suo significato lo spiegheremo davanti al re.
37 'You, Your Majesty, king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given sovereignty, power, strengthand honour-	37 Tu, o re, sei il re dei re a cui il re del cielo ha dato regno, potenza, forza e gloria.
38 human beings, wild animals, birds of the air, wherever they live, he has entrusted to your rule, makingyou king of them al -- you are the golden head.	38 Dovunque essi abitino, uomini, animali dei campi e uccelli del cielo, li ha messi in mano tua e ti ha concesso il dominio sopra tutti costoro. 39 And, after you, another kingdom wil rise, not as great as yours, and then a third, of bronze, which wilrule the whole world.	39 Dopo di te sorgerà un altro regno, inferiore al tuo e in seguito un terzo regno di bronzo, che dominerà su tutta la terra.
40 There wil be a fourth kingdom, hard as iron, as iron that pulverises and crushes al . Like iron thatbreaks everything to pieces, it wil crush and break all the earlier kingdoms.	40 Un quarto regno sarà solido come il ferro, perché il ferro infrange e distrugge tutto, e, come il ferro che distrugge, li infrangerà e distruggerà tutti.
41 The feet you saw, part earthenware, part iron, are a kingdom which wil be split in two, but which wilretain something of the strength of iron, just as you saw the iron and the clay of the earthenware mixed together.	41 Come tu hai visto, i piedi e le dita erano in parte di argilla da vasaio e in parte di ferro: ciò significa che sarà un regno composto, in lui ci sarà la solidità del ferro con argilla molle.
42 The feet were part iron, part potter's clay: the kingdom wil be partly strong and partly brittle.	42 Se le dita dei suoi piedi erano in parte di ferro e in parte di argilla, significa che una parte del regno sarà solida e parte sarà fragile.
43 And just as you saw the iron and the clay of the earthenware mixed together, so the two wil be mixedtogether in human seed; but they wil not hold together any more than iron wil blend with clay.	43 Il fatto che il ferro sia mescolato con l'argilla molle significa che le due parti si congiungeranno per seme umano, ma non legheranno tra di loro, come il ferro non lega con l'argilla.
44 In the days of those kings, the God of heaven wil set up a kingdom which wil never be destroyed, andthis kingdom wil not pass into the hands of another race: it will shatter and absorb all the previous kingdoms anditself last for ever-	44 Ai giorni di questi re, il Dio del cielo farà sorgere un regno che non sarà distrutto in eterno e il suo potere non sarà dato a un altro popolo. Esso infrangerà e distruggerà tutti quei regni, ma esso rimarrà in eterno.
45 just as you saw a stone, untouched by hand, break away from the mountain and reduce iron, bronze,earthenware, silver and gold to powder. The Great God has shown the king what is to take place. The dream istrue, the interpretation exact.'	45 Perciò, quanto al fatto che tu hai visto che dalla montagna si staccava una pietra, senza mano d'uomo, e infrangeva ferro, bronzo, argilla, argento e oro, il Dio grande fa conoscere al re quello che avverrà dopo di ciò. Il sogno è veritiero e la sua interpretazione è degna di fede!".
46 At this, King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel; he gave orders for Daniel to be offered an oblation and a fragrant sacrifice.	46 Allora il re Nabucodònosor si prostrò con la faccia a terra e adorò Daniele. Quindi ordinò che gli si offrissero un'oblazione e sacrifici di soave odore.
47 The king said to Daniel, 'Your god is indeed the God of gods, the Master of kings, and the Revealer ofMysteries, since you have been able to reveal this mystery.'	47 Poi il re disse a Daniele: "Veramente il vostro Dio è il Dio degli dèi, il Signore dei re e il rivelatore dei misteri, perché tu hai potuto svelare questo mistero".
48 The king then conferred high rank on Daniel and gave him many handsome presents. He also madehim governor of the whole province of Babylon and head of all the sages of Babylon.	48 Allora il re elevò di rango Daniele e gli fece molti e grandi doni; quindi lo costituì governatore di tutta la provincia di Babilonia e capo supremo di tutti i sapienti di Babilonia.
49 At Daniel's request, the king entrusted the affairs of the province of Babylon to Shadrach, Meshachand Abed-Nego; Daniel himself remained in attendance on the king.	49 Daniele chiese al re di preporre all'amministrazione della provincia di Babilonia Sadràch, Mesàch e Abdènego. Daniele invece rimase nella reggia del re.
