1 'Now, raise a lament for the princes of Israel.	1 Ma tu mena duolo per i principi d'Israele,
2 Say: What was your mother? A lioness among lions; lying among the cubs she nursed her whelps.	2 E dirai: Per qual ragione la madre vostra, la lionessa si pose a giacere tra' leoni, e in mezzo ai lioncelli allevò i suoi parti?
3 She reared one of her whelps: he grew into a young lion; he learnt to tear his prey; he became a man-eater.	3 E de' suoi lioncini uno ne innalzò,e divenne lione, e apparò a rapire la preda, e mangiare gli uomini.
4 The nations came to hear of him; he was caught in their pit; they dragged him away with hooks toEgypt.	4 E se ne sparse la fama tralle nazioni, e queste non senza rilevarne delle ferite lo presero, e in catene il condussero nella terra d'Egitto.
5 Her expectation thwarted, and seeing her hope dashed, she took another of her whelps and made ayoung lion of him.	5 Ma ella vedendosi priva del suo sostegno, e che era perita la sua speranza, si die a rilevare un altro de' suoi lioncini, e ne fece un lione.
6 He prowled among the lions, he grew into a young lion, he learnt to tear his prey; he became a man-eater.	6 Ed egli andava insieme co' leoni, e diventò lione, e imparò a rapir la preda, e a divorare gli uomini:
7 He tore down their palaces, he destroyed their cities; the land and al its inhabitants were appal ed bythe sound of his roars.	7 Imparò a far delle vedove, e a disertar le città, e al tuono de' suoi ruggiti restò la terra vuota de' suoi abitatori.
8 The nations marched out against him from the surrounding provinces; they spread their net over him;he was caught in their pit.	8 E si adunarono le genti da tutte le provincie contro di lui, e gli tesero agguati, e con iscambievoli ferite lo pigliarono.
9 They shackled him with hooks, they took him to the king of Babylon and threw him into a fortress, sothat his voice could never again be heard on the mountains of Israel.	9 E lo misero in una gabbia, e lo condussero incatenato al re di Babilonia, e lo rinchiusero in una prigione, affinchè non si udisse più la sua voce sui monti d'Israele.
10 Your mother was like a vine planted beside the water, fruitful and leafy, because the water flowed soful .	10 La madre vostra come una vite nel sangue vostro fu piantata lungo le acque: sulle molte acque sono cresciuti i suoi frutti, e le frondi.
11 She had stout stems which became kingly sceptres; she grew higher and higher, up into the clouds;she was admired for her height and the number of her branches.	11 E le sue solide verghe diventarono scettri di sovrani, e il suo fusto si innalzò in mezzo alle frondi, ed ella si vide esaltata nel gran numero de' suoi tralci.
12 But she was furiously uprooted and thrown on the ground; the east wind dried up her fruit, she wasbroken to pieces; her stout stem dried up, the fire devoured it.	12 Ma ella è stata schiantata dall'ira, e gettata per terra, e un vento ardente fé seccare i suoi frutti, marcirono, e inaridirono i rigogliosi suoi tralci, e il fuoco la divorò.
13 Now she has been transplanted to the desert, to a dry and thirsty land.	13 Ed ella è ora trapiantata in un deserto, in una terra arida, e disabitata.
14 Fire burst out of her stem devouring her branches and fruit. No more stout stem for her, no morekingly sceptre.' This is a lament; it was used as such.	14 E usci da una verga de' suoi rami un fuoco, che mangiò un suo frutto, e non rimase di lei una verga forte da servir di scettro a' sovrani. Questo è carme di duolo, e servirà pel duolo.
