NEW JERUSALEMLXX
'Now, raise a lament for the princes of Israel.1 και συ λαβε θρηνον επι τον αρχοντα του ισραηλ
Say: What was your mother? A lioness among lions; lying among the cubs she nursed her whelps.2 και ερεις τι η μητηρ σου σκυμνος εν μεσω λεοντων εγενηθη εν μεσω λεοντων επληθυνεν σκυμνους αυτης
She reared one of her whelps: he grew into a young lion; he learnt to tear his prey; he became a man-eater.3 και απεπηδησεν εις των σκυμνων αυτης λεων εγενετο και εμαθεν του αρπαζειν αρπαγματα ανθρωπους εφαγεν
The nations came to hear of him; he was caught in their pit; they dragged him away with hooks toEgypt.4 και ηκουσαν κατ' αυτου εθνη εν τη διαφθορα αυτων συνελημφθη και ηγαγον αυτον εν κημω εις γην αιγυπτου
Her expectation thwarted, and seeing her hope dashed, she took another of her whelps and made ayoung lion of him.5 και ειδεν οτι απωσται απ' αυτης και απωλετο η υποστασις αυτης και ελαβεν αλλον εκ των σκυμνων αυτης λεοντα εταξεν αυτον
He prowled among the lions, he grew into a young lion, he learnt to tear his prey; he became a man-eater.6 και ανεστρεφετο εν μεσω λεοντων λεων εγενετο και εμαθεν αρπαζειν αρπαγματα ανθρωπους εφαγεν
He tore down their palaces, he destroyed their cities; the land and al its inhabitants were appal ed bythe sound of his roars.7 και ενεμετο τω θρασει αυτου και τας πολεις αυτων εξηρημωσεν και ηφανισεν γην και το πληρωμα αυτης απο φωνης ωρυματος αυτου
The nations marched out against him from the surrounding provinces; they spread their net over him;he was caught in their pit.8 και εδωκαν επ' αυτον εθνη εκ χωρων κυκλοθεν και εξεπετασαν επ' αυτον δικτυα αυτων εν διαφθορα αυτων συνελημφθη
They shackled him with hooks, they took him to the king of Babylon and threw him into a fortress, sothat his voice could never again be heard on the mountains of Israel.9 και εθεντο αυτον εν κημω και εν γαλεαγρα ηλθεν προς βασιλεα βαβυλωνος και εισηγαγεν αυτον εις φυλακην οπως μη ακουσθη η φωνη αυτου επι τα ορη του ισραηλ
Your mother was like a vine planted beside the water, fruitful and leafy, because the water flowed soful .10 η μητηρ σου ως αμπελος ως ανθος εν ροα εν υδατι πεφυτευμενη ο καρπος αυτης και ο βλαστος αυτης εγενετο εξ υδατος πολλου
She had stout stems which became kingly sceptres; she grew higher and higher, up into the clouds;she was admired for her height and the number of her branches.11 και εγενετο αυτη ραβδος ισχυος επι φυλην ηγουμενων και υψωθη τω μεγεθει αυτης εν μεσω στελεχων και ειδεν το μεγεθος αυτης εν πληθει κληματων αυτης
But she was furiously uprooted and thrown on the ground; the east wind dried up her fruit, she wasbroken to pieces; her stout stem dried up, the fire devoured it.12 και κατεκλασθη εν θυμω επι γην ερριφη και ανεμος ο καυσων εξηρανεν τα εκλεκτα αυτης εξεδικηθη και εξηρανθη η ραβδος ισχυος αυτης πυρ ανηλωσεν αυτην
Now she has been transplanted to the desert, to a dry and thirsty land.13 και νυν πεφυτευκαν αυτην εν τη ερημω εν γη ανυδρω
Fire burst out of her stem devouring her branches and fruit. No more stout stem for her, no morekingly sceptre.' This is a lament; it was used as such.14 και εξηλθεν πυρ εκ ραβδου εκλεκτων αυτης και κατεφαγεν αυτην και ουκ ην εν αυτη ραβδος ισχυος φυλη εις παραβολην θρηνου εστιν και εσται εις θρηνον
