1 This is the text of the book written in Babylon by Baruch son of Neraiah, son of Mahseiah, son ofZedekiah, son of Hasadiah, son of Hilkiah,	1 - E queste sono le parole del libro che Baruc, figlio di Neria, figlio di Maasia, figlio di Sedecia, figlio di Sedei, figlio di Elcia, scrisse in Babilonia,
2 in the fifth year, on the seventh day of the month, at the time when the Chaldaeans had capturedJerusalem and burned it down.	2 nel quinto anno ai sette del mese, al tempo in cui i Caldei presero Gerusalemme e la incendiarono.
3 Baruch read the text of this book aloud to Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and to al thepeople who had come to hear the reading,	3 E Baruc lesse le parole di questo scritto in presenza di Jeconia figlio di Joachim, re di Giuda, e in presenza di tutto il popolo intervenuto alla lettura,
4 to the nobles and the sons of the king, and to the elders; to the whole people, that is, to the least no lessthan to the greatest, to al who lived in Babylon beside the river Sud.	4 e in presenza dei nobili della stirpe reale e in presenza dei sacerdoti e in presenza della popolazione, dal ceto più basso fino al ceto più alto, di tutti quelli che abitavano in Babilonia presso il fiume Sodi.
5 On hearing it they wept, fasted and prayed before the Lord;	5 Ascoltando piangevano e digiunavano e facevano orazione nel cospetto del Signore.
6 and they col ected as much money as each could afford	6 E fecero una colletta di denaro, secondo che la mano di ciascuno potè disporre.
7 and sent it to Jerusalem to the priest Jehoiakim son of Hilkiah, son of Shallum, and the other priests,and all the people who were with him in Jerusalem.	7 E lo spedirono in Gerusalemme, al sacerdote Joachim figlio di Elcia, figlio di Salom e agli altri sacerdoti e a tutta la popolazione di quelli che con lui si trovavano in Gerusalemme,
8 Also on the tenth day of Sivan he was given the utensils of the house of the Lord, which had beenremoved from the Temple, to take them back to the land of Judah; these were silver utensils which Zedekiah sonof Josiah, king of Judah, had had made	8 nell'occasione che Baruc aveva ottenuto che i vasi del tempio del Signore che erano stati esportati, fossero restituiti nella terra di Giuda, nel decimo giorno di Sivan. 9 after Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had deported Jeconiah from Jerusalem to Babylon, together withthe princes, the metalworkers, the nobles and the common people.	9 dopo che Jeconia era stato, da Nabucodonosor re di Babilonia, condotto via da Gerusalemme, coi principi e tutta la nobiltà e il popolo minuto e che tutti eran stati tradotti schiavi in Babilonia.
10 Now, they wrote, we are sending you money to pay for burnt offerings, offerings for sin, and incense.Prepare oblations and offer them on the altar of the Lord our God;	10 E dissero: «Ecco che vi mandiamo denari, coi quali provvederete ai sacrifizi e all'incenso e farete l'oblazione e l'offerta espiatoria all'altare del Signore Dio nostro
11 and pray for the long life of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and of his son Belshazzar, that they mayendure on earth as long as the heavens endure;	11 e pregate per la vita di Nabucodonosor re di Babilonia e per la vita di Baltassar suo figliuolo, affinchè i loro giorni sulla terra siano come i giorni del cielo
12 and that the Lord may give us strength and enlighten our eyes, so that we may lead our lives under theprotection of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and of his son Belshazzar, and that we may serve them for a longtime and win their favour.	12 e affinchè il Signore dia a noi forza e illumini gli occhi nostri, e viviamo, sotto l'ombra di Nabucodonosor re di Babilonia e sotto l'ombra del suo figlio Baltassar, i molti giorni che dovremo servire, e troviamo grazia al loro cospetto.
13 Also pray to the Lord our God for us, because we have sinned against him, and the anger, the fury ofthe Lord, has still not turned away from us.	13 Per noi in particolare, pregate il Signore Dio nostro, perchè abbiamo peccato contro di Lui e il suo sdegno non si è ritirato da noi fino al giorno d'oggi.
14 Lastly, you must read the booklet which we are sending you, publicly in the house of the Lord on thefeastday and appropriate days.	14 Leggete questo scritto che vi abbiamo mandato da recitarsi nel tempio del Signore, in un giorno di solennità e in una ricorrenza opportuna, e direte:
15 You must say: Saving justice is the Lord's, we have only the look of shame we bear, as is the casetoday for the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem,	15 - Al Signore nostro Dio sia la giustizia, a noi la confusione della faccia, come è oggi per tutto Giuda e per gli abitanti di Gerusalemme,
16 for our kings and princes, our priests, our prophets, and for our ancestors,	16 pei nostri re e pei nostri principi, pei nostri sacerdoti e pei nostri profeti, e pei padri nostri.
17 because we have sinned before the Lord,	17 Noi abbiamo peccato nel cospetto del Signore Dio nostroe non gli abbiam creduto diffidando di lui;
18 have disobeyed him, and have not listened to the voice of the Lord our God tel ing us to follow thecommandments which the Lord had ordained for us.	18 e non gli siamo stati soggetti, e non abbiamo dato ascolto alla voce del Signore Dio nostro, che ci ammoniva di camminare nei suoi comandamenti che aveva dato a noi.
19 From the day when the Lord brought our ancestors out of Egypt until today we have been disobedientto the Lord our God, we have been disloyal, refusing to listen to his voice.	19 Dal giorno che trasse i padri nostridalla terra d'Egitto, fino ad oggi, siamo stati increduli col Signore Dio nostro, e sconsideratamente ci siamo ritirati per non ascoltare la sua voce.
20 And we are not free even today of the disasters and the curse which the Lord pronounced through hisservant Moses the day he brought our ancestors out of Egypt to give us a land flowing with milk and honey.	20 E molti mali, le maledizioni minacciate dal Signore pel suo servo Mosè, che condusse fuori i padri nostri dalla terra d'Egitto, per dare a noi una terra che sgorga latte e miele, s'attaccarono a noi, così com'è al giorno d'oggi.
21 We have not listened to the voice of the Lord our God in all the words of those prophets he sent us;	21 Noi non abbiamo dato ascolto alla voce del Signore Dio nostro sulla parola dei profeti che a noi mandò;
22 but, each fol owing the dictates of our evil heart, we have taken to serving alien gods, and doing whatis displeasing to the Lord our God.	22 ce ne siamo andati, ciascuno dietro al sentimento del proprio cuore malvagio, a prestar servigio agli dèi stranieri, facendo il male nel cospetto del Signore Dio nostro.
